And when I heard her singing I always wanted to be a singer and had a pretty voice but no one noticed the kid was talented at home but yet would give me quarters to entertain our guest with Barbra Streisand songs. Bette Midler seemed to me from vibes that she is a straight-up, no bullshit bitch who takes wooden Nickle's like a New Yorker which she lived there for years and still has an apt there. I hear her in interviews and she sounds honest about her work and home life. She did not hit me as a phony Hollyweird actress. I love Bette Midler's voice, music and acting.
Like all Michael Parkinson interviews - absolutely classic. Bette - 60 yrs old - looking brilliant- but love her honesty about her energy level for performing. So bloody frustrating - but it is fact.
I saw Bette at the Frog and Nightgown, a night club in Raleigh, NC, in the 70's just when she was getting started. Her piano player was Barry Manilow who at the time no one had heard of. It was a fabulous show and it was evident that she would make it big.

The Parkinson Show had the great format of eventually having all guests on set at one time, but it was still a 'talk show' between & each guest & Michael The next evolution is the Graham Norton Show. GN owes a debt of gratitude to MP for learning that the show should be about the guests talking freely, but he's added the factor, that because all his guests are brought out together, they often just chat between themselves MP was great for the 20thC. GN is great for the 21stC
Interviewed Bette Davis twice..once at the Hollywood women`s Press Club Xmas party. She was lovely. Of course my mother did not name me after her so there wasn`t a problem. Joan Crawford was also wonderful.

`BING CROSBY FELL INTO THE PIT`..I was there. What a night. At Pomona College..Bing was doing a benefit for ANTA (American National Theatre Academy) I was a member and attended the concert that night. Bob Hope hopped up the aisle and gave us the eye. Sigh..sigh...sigh. Then Bing sang..Oh My God! Heaven!! then at the end when he was taking his final curtain call for some strange reason he stepped back..miscalculated step...bad lighting..and fell into the pit. There was a reception afterwards but noone went. It was like a funeral. Although Bing did survive, the fall obviously damaged his heart and he died a few years later. It was an awful occasion but how strange for Bette to mention it in passing.
What's more neat is that she asked to sit next to me and then she pulls up a chair , saying to me " oh my feet are so sore . " while rubbing her legs And feet . right before my very eyes she takes off her shoes ..rubbing her feet ." yes Bette Midler was by my side rubbing her legs and her feet ...
i wonder if anyone noticed what i did right away when she walked onstage and greeted everyone .. watch how she walks . . i could feel the pain she was feeling in her legs . or possibly her back .. i have problems in both areas and i walk just like that .. its an Effort !! Still Love her tho , she' Belongs ON STAGE !!!!
