Having read the series, I can say it does for the modern world what Lovecraft did in his time. It illustrates beautifully what it means to go against something truley advanced in a way we can't measure. They describe at one point, how we could craft the finest spears, the grandest armour and sharpest swords, but what does that mean to a man with an assault rifle? What is humanity to a foe so advanced it tricks our greatest minds into believing magic?

Really makes you view xenocidal Warhammer 40K humanity in a different light. 🥲 “It’s them or us.”

@@user-jk5um1om8l Not really for me thematically, both are articulated as tragic and ultimately unnecessary tales of xenophobia and paranoia causing a slow death for everyone involved.
Understandable why both are in the state they're in don't get me wrong, but by no means is made out to be necessary/justified. Infact when trisolaris had a chance to actually collaborate, and didn't, (deaths end), it lead to damn near everyone's annihilation. It was only when they let it go (albeit forcibly), they survived.
40k has differences of course thanks to chaos wrecking most chances at meaningful alliances, that otherwise were benefitting both parties so its not entirely comparable, especially with humanities agency in 40k compared to 3-body. But still, the themes are not too far removed.
      My take atleast.

You two, as one of yer own, enjoyed your reaction and speculation; let me expand on this 3 body review:
Read all the books (3) during lockdown. Watched the Chinese interpretation of the 1st book last year on RUclips (30 episodes, subtitled).
    In a nutshell (coconut) :
Probably the most amazing scifi series since Dune was written. Chinese guy, stunning knowledge of particle physics etc, explained brilliantly for dumbarses like myself to understand the enormity of the story...
Which starts in 1967 during the Chinese cultural revolution and ends about 5000 years later.
We journey right through the future of humanity as it faces obliteration by advanced alien species who we inadvertently (or not) contact and reveal ourselves.
No further semi-spoilers than that other than to point out this series will cover the first book.
The Chinese version was v good if basic in production values but the overall story is the star. It's incredibly existentially chilling (horrifying when considered enough) ; no matter how sophisticated we think we are, we're more or less cannon fodder for advanced cultures. And the universe is an unforgiving dark forest of hunter killers out for resources.
To wit: expect great things if they got this right. Can't wait to see how it plays out; deserves maximum quality of translation to the small screen.

Hope they don't take too many creative liberties for this because it's a completed book series. It's an amazing and has mind-bending sci-fi concepts.

they already mess up by making it about a few scientist. the reason why the alien single out 1 scientist is to isolate him. the scary part is they make you feel like you are losing your mind by only allow you to experienced it. having 2 people witness "the flickering", reduces the impact. after watching the trailer, i got disappoint. watch the chinese series... and i just have to bin watch it.

@@lagrangeweiI completely agree! I recently finished the first book (just started the second one actually) and watched the first two episodes of the Netflix show afterwards. I was honestly disappointed with quite a few things already but the fact that everyone was able to see the universe flickering was the most disappointing for sure. I remember I watched the first episode of the Chinese series a while ago before I even started reading the books (but I already knew quite a few things about the story) and I’d love to know if you thought it was a good adaptation!
