  • In this week's Friday episode, Patrick tries to repair the damage to the chateau main gate columns caused by a history of incorrect patches of old concrete. Patrick and Stuart then have friends Jane and Tony from ‪@notquiteachateaudiy‬ stop by the chateau, where Tony comes up with a plan to install each of the 150 lb. (68 kg) new stone finials.

    Patrick,
I’ve been told that the reason that cement breaks up the stone, is because cement absorbs moisture like a sponge . When the moisture in the cement freezes, it expands and fractures the stone around it. It’s actually a violent process that exerts a lot of force.
I’m glad that you’ve chosen these finials. They make a grand statement , which a front approach should have... Especially the way you’ve elegantly restored the metal gates.

Good morning Patrick & Stuart, I must say, gates do make a good impression of your property no matter where you live! I had a good look at the detail of the metal gates, and they are very fitting to the Chateaux. The finials are the best you could have chosen, they compliment the gates and bring character to the Chateaux. Tony is so reliable and Jane loves to get involved in many ways, they are a blessing to have as friends, I think they are more than "just friends"!! So there, you have done a project which you never have to put your hand to again unless somebody smashes into your gates, hardly unlikely. I am sure you will mange your three projects you wish to work on as I can procrastinate but suddenly I get this spring inside me and I can make up for loss time. The chandelier did cast many delightful rainbow specs on the walls it's lovely and very calming for the late afternoon. Happy days, enjoy all your projects awaiting, you will accomplish them all. Do take care and be alert. It was a most enjoyable video, it was nice to see what's happening in France on your property, thank you for sharing. Kind regards, Elize.

Hello Gentlemen... so my three observations. The refracted light in the entrance hall from the chandelier was just magical... beautiful. I can actually hear you Patrick laughing and saying to Stuart... "look at that"! The refurbishment of the entrance gate pillars is so spot on from the repair of the top base to the addition of those spectacular urns... such a grand entrance and enhancement so wonderful with the style of the Chateau... and the pillars no longer look like "Madonnas müde Großmutter". Thirdly... we know that the fraction of time we see on the videos is surround by many more hours... perhaps days and weeks... of time consuming hard work... so again, thank you for sharing in your unique, friendly and upbeat way. We truly enjoy sharing it with you.

Adding concrete to stone has the same effect that happens when you us spray insulation. It expands and unlike foam installation concrete doesn’t give with the pressure the stone does which start out as micro cracks that over time of holding in all the moisture and expanding more and more it destroys the stone from the inside to the outside. I really hope more people around the world learn from all of the destruction done to the chateau’s. Respect the history of the building because they got something right. Look how long the buildings, chateau’s, and even walls in the gardens have survived and will survive even my grandchildren’s grandkids.
