I was one of the naysayers saying that UP 844's unassisted 2017 trip was some of the last diesel-free mainline American steam we'd ever see. But here's 4014, finally stretching her legs by herself for the first time since the '50s. Absolutely awesome.
Wouldn't you know it? Ed changed things up and they are running without a diesel unit this time. More than likely, a diesel will be added later. But as of now, it's steam only. Yeah!!
Excellent video showing great pacing shots and the clean efficiency of this magnificent engine, this time without a diesel assist for the moment. She's running so smooth. Hope you get some great footage as she passes through Echo Canyon.
A few years ago, who could have even imagined one of these would ever run again? If they restore a B-36 to flying condition I can die happy. I suspect I'm going to have to be happy with this.
To call it "Big Boy" is an understatement! It still rates as one of the most powerful locomotives ever built! And one truly amazing thing is that it was designed using only drafting tables and ink!!
It be cool if I can ride a train pulled by that big locomotive. I remember watching an old show about that locomotive and the show is called The Last of the giants. I like trains as much as much as I like extinct animals, kaijus and DC comics
Again people say that the diesel was a helper. The diesel was there because of the PTC (positive train control) system and now UP has installed the system on the 4014 itself. The diesel can also provide dynamic braking to save wear and tear on the braking shoes. In case of a low water situation, the diesel can haul the train to the nearest water source, because today you don't have water towers every few miles. I agree that a steamer looks better without a diesel in sight, but keep in mind we are not in the steam era anymore so modern problems require modern solutions.
I wonder why these UP steam trains rarely (if ever) carry passengers. In Europe, almost all steam-hauled trains are passenger trains, and the tickets at least partly pay for the operation of the steam locomotives.

That's the beauty of her having PTC.
Big boy sure knows how to command admiration and respect.
A train sitting right in front. Brilliant

I absolutely LOVE that they got her running without a helper Diesel.

Yo great one man, it’s cool to see this steam locomotive running at speed!
Love the sound of steam engines specially the 4014.
Great views of the exhaust , he sure is sticking the Boot into the Big Girl .

Thank You Very Much, one of the best pacing videos I've seen yet of 4014
I love when both drivers are sinchronized
Outstanding video! Thank you!!
Outstanding video. A total Eye and Eargasm. To quote W, "heck of a job." Copious thanks.
Thank You very much for video.
Nice video

Nice. So they are going to do the trip without a diesel assist? Nice
If you want to know what looking at a train behind another train is like… this is your video!
Nice To See 4014 Hauling A Train With No Diesel Helper Thanks To The Newly Installed PTCZ System.

cause this ain't Europe
All those pesky takers and covered hoppers in the way earlier on. Nice pacing !
Yea that was unfortunate timing on that other train’s part.
@@FanRailer the railroad needs to keep running even if 4014 is out
what she still doing around 45mph when you were pacing with her? nice video!
Yessir. Uphill anywhere between 20 and 30 mph. On the level or downhill, 40-45 mph.
On the third clip I’m one or two cars behind you
Looks like Ed has an engineer in-training.
I'd love to see locomotive at top speed!
Interesting how quiet it is and how little black exhaust it expels when traveling level track! (Or, is that downgrade?)
if the engine is being fired properly, even at speed there is little smoke.
If you don’t hear the exhaust, that means they’re drifting.
@@FanRailer Actually, I meant overall, but especially the gearwork. Just an amazing engine!
Wow

Benefits of PTC. You only need a diesel if you want a diesel.
Im gonna fire mah laza
It’s amazing and I respect it! I’m glad you shared this with everyone! 🏇🏿🫡🇺🇸❤️💪👌
