  • A few of you have been asking about the rig I use, so here we go!
    If you're getting into Pedal Steel, I've released a series of free video tutorials on how to play the Pedal Steel Guitar. If you need Pedal Steel or Guitar on your music, or would like to arrange a Skype Lesson, drop me a line at my website.
    The pedals / knee levers on your Pedal Steel MAY BE DIFFERENT than mine, every pedal steel player has a slightly different setup, but the principles should help you with your Pedal Steel technique.

    Nice one Scott. The more I watch your videos the more I’m tempted to dive in the deep end and buy one.

      It’s an expensive yet incredibly rewarding experience Terry, I can recommend it. Possibly start with a lap steel if you’re not sure.

Just sayin your GREAT but could you slow down when explaining the pedals. Been doing musoc for 50 years and wish I had my Sho-Bud at 18 vs. 68. Peace and KEEP doing sir!😊

      I Bet Scott would agree here.
      The right hand is EVERYTHING. Especially when beginning. But I often say “The difference between a pedal steel player and someone who owns a steel is whether they can block or not”
      Push through with the finger picks. It’s worth it in the end. Not to usurp Scott’s thread but I have a video that might be super helpful on homespun music called “beginner pedal steel for guitar players”. So if u already play guitar it runs you through (with multiple hd angles and backing tracks) how to start understanding the instrument using the knowledge you already have from guitar!

    I'd love to hear you demo boost pedals with EQ. I'm trying out the Xotic Super Clean right now on my steels, has potential, but would love a comparison of other key candidate pedals similar to it. I've wished for years that someone would figure out how to work with pedal builders and demo lots of interesting stompboxes with pedal steel. It may not be you, but sure would be helpful for someone to have a RUclips channel like that! Nice gear and playing, mate!

      Well John, you have come to the right place. I’m currently speaking with a number of pedal manufacturers about specific Pedal Steel content. My steel is currently being setup and refurbished, once it’s back, there’s much content to make. Keep your eyes posted on the channel.

    Hey man.. so I assume you are part of the team with me constantly getting into the argument when folks say "well you can't use a tube amp with pedal steel"
    I ALWAYS gig with old Fenders on pedal steel.. old Deluxe Reverbs, sometimes a Vibrolux Reverb as my double duty... and I do have... yes.. amazing... the real 1964 Vibroverb with the JBL as my "BIG DOG" amp.. my "I don't know what I'm getting my self into " amp... or just when I don't mind carrying/bringing... it is literally the desert island pedal steel amp IMO

      Oh god, welcome to the touchpaper section of the comments 🤣🤣🤣
      My view on gear is very simple, does it sound good?? End of. Paul Franklin uses Little Walter tube amps, that’s surely enough said! I also have a Telonics amp that I love. A lot of the argument (I think) is about clean headroom to which I ask, who plays that loud these days? Every gig I do, the Little Walter 50 has more than enough clean headroom.

      @@ScottPoleyMusic bingo right? Yup. And I admit I abhor super super clear steel ton with no “hair”. So definitely personal preference as well.

    • @JoshYenne
      @JoshYenne 8 месяцев назад +1

      And I love it when guys ALL THE TIME talk about how their favorite steel tone ever is something like Lloyd Greens tone on Charlie Prides live at panther hall album. Just the pinnacle!! And you ask them what they play and it’s : 2 Stewart power amps in stereo push 1000 watts per side. Into some digital reverb into a massive black widow 15” speaker. And somehow they are having trouble really dialing in that Lloyd tone!?!? (Spoiler alert, he used a twin Reverb turned up to 10 basically kind of distorting half the time). Beautiful!!

    hey that was such a great video! i have been looking for that kind of gear explainer. thank you so much. by chance do you have any suggested links on comparative lap and pedal steel hand techniques? i say that as i keep hearing go to lap and then move to pedal steel if you know what is good for you. i believe what people say but no one explains the why. i have not sourced anyone/link on articulating examples more directly or technically between the two. thanks again.

    Really interesting Scott - just a quick question: How long does it normally take you to find your way around a new effects pedal? You always seem to have mastered each one, so do you spend hours experimenting with them, or is it that you already know what you're looking for, so it's a matter of finding it, rather than just seeing what each pedal can do? 🤔

    • @ScottPoleyMusic
      @ScottPoleyMusic  2 года назад +1

      Honestly Ian, it depends on the pedal. I like pedals that allow you to quickly access great tones. There are lots of pedals, especially these days that allow you to really deep dive and that’s great too.
      I do my research and try to understand the function of each control before playing around much.

    Which sweetened tuning do you like best for the E9? It looks like there’s about 4 or 5 different ones so curious which one has been working for you?

    • @ScottPoleyMusic
      @ScottPoleyMusic  Год назад

      GOOD QUESTION!!! I’ve had a lot of luck with the one built into my Peterson Tuner and tweaking from there. However, I’m being sent a tuning by a pal that he thinks is even better for the split tunings. Let me get back to you on that with a video when I know more 👍

      @@ScottPoleyMusic awesome! I look forward to it! As someone who is coming from regular guitar, getting the intonation to sound “right” to my ears has been the toughest part. While I know some of it is learning how much pressure to apply with the tone bar, I know some of it is definitely the temperament of the 3rd interval on the lap steel. Looking forward to that. Regards, 🙏🙏

    Can you recommend a particual e- bow for steel? I saw one being used that sat on the string without having to hold it and kept sustaining.I imagine it had to be a particular weight etc.. to be able to use it like that.

    • @ScottPoleyMusic
      @ScottPoleyMusic  Год назад

      Very good question. I just use a standard ebow, it works great for Pedal Steel.

    • @superorangeish

      @@ScottPoleyMusic Thanks man.Great for some ambient sounds.I have a knock off, Sound Stone which is quite a bit less $ , but it requires finesse and I don't think I can let it rest on the string w/o holding it down, like I've seen another steel player do online.I appreciate the reply!

    • @ScottPoleyMusic
      @ScottPoleyMusic  Год назад

      Aaah I see - I bought my ebow years ago (I don’t even think there were copies available then…). I’ve used it on countless sessions and gigs on pedal steel, lap steel and guitar. They’re a super handy creative tool. You can just leave it resting on the pedal steel and it works fine 👍
