90s 3d animation had charm that will never be replicated. It was new and exciting technology, and often times it was used in ways that were just surreal and uncanny. You had this new technology that made previously impossible things possible, so why not make some really weird stuff with it? By the 2000s thanks to 3d animation breaking into the main stream, a standardized “cartoony” clean look and visual style emerged. Early 3d was the Wild West, before there WERE standards. Even attempts to recreate the aesthetic of 90s 3d focus more on the low-quality of the polygons and lighting and noticeably TRY to look surreal and uncanny. There’s some really funny and creepy stuff that’s been made more recently in this style, but just by being made intentionally as imitation means that newer creations with “old” 3d can’t actually match the unintentional surrealism of early 3d.
