I remember those machines Basically a Westinghouse with a Frigidaire type control panel, a straight blade agitator, Emerson motor and the Franklin transmission.
This washer washes like my mom's old Westinghouse we had back when I was little. The older GM / Frigidaire washers with the up/down agitator were unique machines.
Boy Eugene talk about a blast from the past, I had this machine back in 1990 but my machine was the deluxe model with more controls... The lady that i sold it to, still has it up and running today 28 years later!!! I guess that's when they knew how to build a good washer then??? Great video Eugene and have a great weekend...
These WCI built Frigidaire’s get a bad rep, but I loved these machines when they added the larger, non-ribbed tub and the dual action agitator. A lot of people mistakenly think that the tub is rotating around while the agitator oscillates in place like a normal brake-held washer, but in these machines, the agitator was moving as the transmission itself turned with the tub. In other words, if you mounted a camera on the inside of the basket facing the agitator, the agitator is oscillating between to fixed points just like a normal machine, and it would look just like your typical washer. Later on when they made the drain pump separate was when I think these machines really shined in durability because the stress was taken off the belt and pulleys because it didn’t have to spin drain anymore. And the indexing tub during wash is what I think helped these machines keep buildup and sediment clear in the outer tub because water was constantly being forced to swirl around. Being relatively simple mechanically and having a fairly decent build quality is why I think my aunt has had a ‘98 model WCI Frigidaire that only just gave its first problem this year, which is the timer going bad. Other than that, 20 years later and there’s been no hint of problems with bearings or other problems that plague newer machines.
Agreed we had one of these in the 90s, never failed us the thing was a tank. And i prefer these straight vane agitators to the spiral ones that replaced them. Only thing is it is that it would tear up clothes it was a very a aggressive washer and loud like the Speed Queens.
The JET-CONE Frigidaire washers what were manufactured my GM were the real deal! The Frigidaire washer in this vid doesn't come close to the GM Frigidaire jet-cone washers from long ago!!
WCI gets a bad rap, but the truth is they did make some pretty decent appliances. We had an early 90s Frigidaire top loader that cleaned anything we threw at it. It liked to chew through belts (most likely the bearing) but otherwise it was a great washer. We gave it to someone when we moved and as far as I know he's still using it. I also have several WCI window air conditioners and they work great, they are quiet, well made and have no problem cooling my house on the hottest days.
I always thought the control panels on these were very neat looking with the very legible font, but they were flimsy. I remember seeing these in Edison NJ back on the late 80s and early 90s at Tops appliances. I would turn the knobs on these machines and pull the knob out to have the control panel buckle. I thought to myself how cheaply made these were. I would take this over most of what is made today though. At least it's a real washer.
Wow those towels really move around, plus somehow it still manages to have turnover. Not a bad washer it’s a shame your going to condemn it, still looks like there is life left in it. 😢
At 0:10 and 0:18 I heard what sounds like an error sound effect on Canon Vixias (or any other Canon camera for that matter)... I use one to film tornado siren tests. They’re great cameras.
If I had this machine I would leave the agitator in it. Other than the Westinghouse ramp, this is the best agitator they used and way better than any dual action agitator that WCI tried to use in these machines.
@Floridarailz: These older washers with spin-drains can use the old fashioned TIDE POWDER not HE. The TIDE POWDER now is only HE TURBO to comply with today's HE WASHING MACHINES which have separate electric drain pumps which can only do neutral drains before going into the spin cycle.
White Consolidsted Industries started out as the White Sewing Machine Company. In 1967. White bought the Kelvinator division of American Motors. In 1974, they purchased the appliance division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. and renamed it White-Westinghouse, and in 1979 they purchased the Frigidaire division of GM. White also purchased Tappan and Viking. WCI was then purched by Electrolux USA, then Electrolux USA waspuched by Eureka.
These newer Fridgidare washers have an electric drain pump that can do only neutral drains. An electric drain pump can't do spin-draining. The Speed Queen TR SERIES WASHERS all have electric drain pumps and I've noticed they only do neutral drains. Any washer that has an electric drain pump I'd only recommend using HE DETERGENTS.
This machine was condemned and doomed when it was new and no it was not even remotely on par with or compared to even other machines of the time. Horribly unreliable. Just ask how many returns people made after buying these WCI Frigidaire’s it was disaster on epic proportions. The service department had row after row of warranty repair and parts lined up. I refused to sell them and steered folks to the direct competitor in our store of the time which was the Maycor’s magic chief line at the time. Never saw those come back!!! Any other brand out ran this at the time.
Sorry but this washer is over 25 years, still working. It just needs the bearing replaced. Sorry direct drives broke down just like any other brand. The plastic outer tup is far better than the metal outer tubes, they don't rust, or leak. Whirlpool also uses plastic outer tubs also, even your direct drive.
@@coolrobuxgaming I would take one of these junks over most of what's out there now. If I had a choice though between this and the new Maytag commercial, the Maytag commercial would be in my laundry room.

WCI?
W.C.I White Consolidsted Industries.

Washer for it's age I think does a great job. Every thing looked nice and dry. I think the old girl still has some life In her... good vidio!!
I would love to have taken this machine. Wouldn't use it as my main machine, but something fun to use once in a while.

older machines were so much better than the new
Reminds me of my grandmas old Gibson washer.. love the indexing tub!!
Gibson was also a WCI company

Currently using this exact machine....its 2019. Wow, its almost 27 years old!
Impressive!
8:47 i was expecting the agitator to turn while the tub doesn't since you said the spin bering is tight, but instead the tub started spinning quickly
This looks like a good machines
to bad you have to scrap it

the condition is Fair it just needs some primer on the bottom pan and the leak patched I did that on my Frigidaire Crown Series
What brand of commercial detergent is that? I am trying to find one, I love the smell of hotel linens!
I would’ve loved to have that machine! I would put in new transmission and Frigidaire dual action agitator. I would make full cycles.
If I had this machine, I'd put a Westinghouse transmission, a Westinghouse deep ramp agitator and a Westinghouse motor in it.
Not a bad idea! The deep rams work really well with the indexing tub and they kinda cancel eachother out too, which is pretty cool.
If I had this machine I would leave the agitator in it. Other than the Westinghouse ramp, this is the best agitator they used and way better than any dual action agitator that WCI tried to use in these machines.
It seems to be doing a really good job. Sad to be going away and never to be loved again.
I agree
We had 1 of those in my old house it was noisy but we liked it
I think General Motors stopped producing the original Frigidaire washers round 79 or 80. Then Westinghouse took over.
1979 was the very last yr the Frigidaire built appiances under the GM banner . Then WCI took over in 1980- 1986 & sold out to AB Electrolux in 1986 .
@@tinawhite9810 Yea but WCI still built appliances until 2003 or so, they were just owned by Electrolux.

This has the same control panel as the fridadare from my childhood only it has a different agitator. Still on the lookout.
Are you looking into getting a 4th washing machine in your shed?
I found a 1-18 on craigslist for 40 bucks
So are we getting another restoration video? Say yes.
@@LorainFurnitureandAppliance I was asking for this washer.
I’m on the bus agian😂😂😂
Why not just repair it?
I really hate tub indexing! Larger items would just wrap around thee agitator and take a long time to turn over.
Bruh it turns over clothes you can’t over fill it with clothes
Looks like a late 1980s/early 1990s Frigidaire model.
if you condemn it instead of fixing it can I have the Agitator
Gotta repair that spin issue…
White Consolidated Industries is what WCI means
White sewing machines & Westinghouse
@FireAlarmTechGuy4444.…. Yep. Aquired the name in 1964.
Man i need the motor off this machine i have the same one
You should've used that load on the direct drive
Not seeing any soap foam up and switch around kinda bothered me..
1992?
Nice washer 92 is vintage the calypso is not vintage. I hate Frigidaire but this washer look nice.
What about the 1-18?
Can you save me one of those agitators please
I only asked for the agitator to likely give to you LOL
The spin-draining is an exact duplicate of the older Maytags and this machine duplicates the Maytags operating characteristics.
