My sister had a 1986 Whirlpool. It worked some similar to this. It had a "Magic Lint Filter" that would clog up. Great washer taking everything into consideration.
I think that was the last year of the ‘Magic Lint Filter’ since 1986 was the last year for the belt drive machines in the US, 1991 was the last year for belt drive production for the South American market.
Fantastic Sound ( it talks) and action - the paint and white plastic/rubber are spectacular! Its sad these companies can't make true retro models... simple, functional, and actually got your clothes clean! .....They would have waiting lists.
I am pretty sure if Whirlpool started making machines like this again, they’d have no complaints about them. Only people who’d complain about them would be the folks who don’t have common sense to load a machine properly along with using the correct amount of detergent and such.
@@seana806 They...(whoever makes Whirlpool now) would sell out of them so fast there would probably be months if not years of back log... and they could set the price high so that even if the machine worked for 30 years they still would have made a profit. I’ve never seen that movie from start to finish but I did watch a trailer for that movie and saw my set in that movie. Only difference between that set and mine is the dryer is gas since it has the removable lower access panel while the electric versions did not but otherwise is the same set as mine. It’s a shame that there aren’t any others around since I haven’t seen any others in the archives on AW except for the 1964 versions and combo52 on AW has a 1964 Mark XII set in his collection.
These machines were built during a time when energy regulations weren’t a thing and you could do whatever you wanted but ever since the oil embargo of 1973, everyone has been paranoid about energy consumption/usage and things have been in a downward spiral ever since, many Baby Boomers like the ones on AW complain on why they don’t make things like they used to but yet are very left wing (along with their millennial children) which doesn’t allow for quality appliances to be made since energy regulations dictate what you can and can’t do all thinks to the Baby Boomer and Millennial generations and Gen X and Gen Z have to put up with their crap since that’s how elitist the Boomers and Millennials are.
@@seana806 Sean you pretty much nailed it. Low quality and high profit margins is what it's about now. Disposable society. The Whirlpool that built your machines then isn't that same company today. Yeah they are still in Benton Harbor but the mindset is different. It's a whole new "culture" over there and I think it's a lousy one. They don't care about what they build anymore just get it out the door it seems. Thankfully there are still many examples of these fine machines running and RUclips is also a blessing that we can see them running.
I actually was a friend with someone by the name of Jamie Jeffery (agitatorjamie on RUclips) (pulsator on AW) on Facebook awhile back but he unfriended me and blocked me since I commented on how Whirlpool doesn’t build quality appliances anymore since he works at Whirlpool and he blocked me. Even sent him a photo of my 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII set in messenger awhile back since he’s on AW and works at Whirlpool but didn’t say anything and that just tells you that Whirlpool doesn’t give a damn about quality anymore. If Whirlpool doesn’t change their ways then I’ll use all of their designs they had back in the late 50’s and 60’s and will have a fairly large monopoly on the appliance market/industry since manufacturers have abandoned quality and if people don’t want to pay for a quality appliance then it’s too damn bad since I’ll be the only one making quality appliances that will run for decades.
I believe he is, surprised John Lefever hasn’t jumped down his throat since his engineering (along with everyone else’s engineering at Whirlpool) has caused hell with John Lefever and the owners of the machines he has to fix since he doesn’t care about engineering a quality product anymore. He’s just like the rest of everyone else on AW who is a liberal who always contradicts themselves since their views and opinions don’t allow for anything quality to made again.

Thanks! I’ve literally seen no other 1963 Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII’s around and this could very well be the only one that’s known to exist at the moment.
I will eventually, but have to work out a few bugs since I had to make a repair to the timer back in January, ran it through a quick cycle earlier this month but the weather doesn’t seem to be wanting to cooperate since it’s been quite rainy here in California.
Absolutely! I was a huge Maytag fan a few years ago and since I’ve expanded my horizons I realized there were many other good machines out there including these very rare gems I’ve literally seen no where else and I believe this is the only 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII set that’s known since I’ve literally seen no others around.
This machine has probably payed for it many times over, probably would pay for itself even more if it had the optional suds saver on it. If paired up with a gas dryer, the set would basically be free since it would literally pay for itself that many times over.
I have a 2001 Whirlpool washer. Lets just say I am never getting rid of the thing. It still runs like new. I guess mine is one of the last of the "old" generation.
I wish they still made machines like this but since everyone seems to be too worried about energy consumption along with greedy corporations, it isn’t likely they’ll be making machines like this anytime soon unless someone is fed up with the quality of modern appliances and decides to make them like this again.
Indeed, need to make more videos of this machine in the future but probably won’t be until I find someone who can 3D print a new cam assembly since it separated in half on me earlier this year. Made a few repair attempts but none of them were entirely successful since it wasn’t working properly on the gentle cycle and just want everything to be in working order before putting it back into service.
It’s amazing on how they were able to achieve the same tasks without the use of a single computer chip anywhere but yet, would run and run for decades. While computers can be reliable, they degrade with time and eventually will just give up the ghost without any sort of warning signs whatsoever.
This is a favorite out of all the machines I own. There will be more videos of this machine in the future, but will probably have to take it out of service once my soon to be Maytag A806 set is up and running since there’s some rust on the outer tub I’ll need to address and will have to figure out on how to replace the center post bearings since I don’t have a be puller or installer for the new bearings I have for it.
I'm new to watching washing machine videos. I haven't seen the recirculation feature before, but I love how it looks. What are the benefits? Is there a dedicated pump for recirculation?
a new theory about how this machine works just popped into my head: because the wig-wag continues moving back and forth while draining out water, it leads me to believe there is a mechanism above it that is hidden by the outer tub, which moves a gear away from the output shaft of the transmission when the timer advances into a drain portion. then, when the machine advances to a spin portion, the mechanism moves that gear back onto the shaft, with the grind-click-clunk noise being caused by the shaft moving while the gear is trying to get back on the shaft; some belt drive machines seem to stop the motor briefly just before spin, so that i guess the mechanism can move the gear back into place without the noise
The transmission hangs down from the baseplate/table, the control magnet assembly is above the transmission cover, runs whenever the motor is running. The belt drives that have the motor stop for a brief amount of time have independent speed selections, since everything is built into the timer, runs continuously without stopping. Unfortunately, going to have to transplant a different console on since the timer died in this machine last year, been absolute hell trying to locate a replacement timer. Whirlpool in their infinite wisdom couldn’t keep a design of console around for more than a year on top of only making 10 years worth of parts.
Working like a champ, looks like. How cool! Would love to get my old '79 Kenmore repaired and back running, although even the Whirlpool I'm using now is 15-17y old, and a Kenmore dryer dad got new in '87 that I ended up with back in '96. So nice to see these old units maintained and kept going.
These were in service from 1963 to 2005, only repairs it had from what I could tell was a new belt and pump. Everything worked when I acquired it back in 2020 but knew I would have to go through it sooner than later. Basically I tried to remove the hose that goes from the automatic dispensers to the T pipe snapped off and basically had to take the entire machine apart to get to it. Everything basically snowballed from there and ended up having to remove the outer tub because of pinholes from rust. Literally had this machine apart at least 20 times since I’ve owned it but haven’t had to make any major repairs it in awhile, last repair I did to it was JB-Weld came assembly back together in February.
Should run for many, many more years. Just have to put it through it’s paces before I put it back into service. Tested and ran it through 3 cycles but plan on running it through a few more just to be sure. @@seana806 Yes, I am Brazilian and I know that both Brastemp and Consul are two Brazilian brands that belong to Whirlpool. Then it became a brand of home appliances and its products (with emphasis on washing machines) were American projects by Whirlpool. In 1994, Brastemp merged with Consul and became Multibrás, in which Whirlpool already owned part of the company's shares, and finally, only in the 2000s did Whirlpool announce the total purchase of Multibrás. @@Bnizzofashizzo you have to be care with how much detergent you use in these older Whirlpools since they have a tendency of suds locking very easily, even when HE detergent is used they will suds lock since the Whirlpool Surgilator kicks up a lot of suds. @@annettea6402 the whole reason why they have to lock the lid is there’s no tub break, with any of the older machines when open the lid, it’ll come to a stop or in this case, will disengage the solenoid for spin, will energize and re-engage.
These machines don’t use agitator dogs since it’s a long stroke transmission. Shorter stroke transmissions need a dual action agitator since they don’t have all that more torque to move and generate currents of water compared to the longer stroke transmissions.
Whirlpool just used the name RCA for marketing since not many people where familiar with the name Whirlpool but were familiar with the RCA name. It certainly worked since Whirlpool made a name for themselves in the mid to late 1960’s.
Possibly, but one day I’ll have to rely on ad revenue for various repairs of the machines one day. This video will continue to get more and more views as time marches on.
Possibly, but here’s one thing about induction motors with a centrifugal start switch. If a motor with a centrifugal start switch sits too long on the start winding, it’ll dry the start winding rendering it useless since all it will do is hum and barely move.
Fantastic machine, glad you got it up and running. Why was the agitator slowing down and speeding up during spins while the tub stayed at the same speed? Seems really strange if that's an intentional design choice by Whirlpool
I am not sure why the agitator is doing that but I believe it could be dragging on the gear oil a little inside the transmission but that’s not a big deal.
@@seana806 The agitator shaft free-wheels when not engaged, picks up spin motion from friction with the bearings and seal at the top. Whirlpool actually developed the Wash N Wear/Permanent Press cycle in 1958 and developed the super wash cycle in 1963 and as mentioned 1963 was the very first year for the super wash cycle and all Whirlpool machines did the partial drain on the super wash cycle from 1963 to the mid to late 90’s.

What's up with the agitator... shouldn't it spin at the same speed with the tub? And is that why it's making that sound... shikky shick... shickky shick... Shickky shick.... Shickky shick?? Ha ha ha ha... You can name her .. Shickky shick!!
The agitator freewheels in neutral and since this was rebuilt, it was still braking in till about October or so. Doesn’t do that anymore. Seems to be more pronounced on the older Whirlpool built machines from 1964 and up. Reason why it was changed in 1965 was to help quiet them down a little.

Fantastic Sound ( it talks) and action - the paint and white plastic/rubber are spectacular! RCA/Whirlpool and late 50's early 60's GE filter flo's with the lighting - dials and chrome trim...are truly functional works of art.
@@seana806 I'd love to hear the washer and dryer running simultaneously at full speed.
Absolutely stunning machine love the video nice to see it. I remember this same exact machine in “WHO’S MINDING THE STORE” starring Jerry Lewis
It still gets me how quickly these fill up. They waste no time like the modern machines do.
@@seana806 Exactly. They don't realize how totalitarian many of theirs views and beliefs are or they do and jist don't care. They really believe that they have the upper hand in society. That they are going to change the world for the better...lol.

Yes natural gas can cause an explosion but you will smell a gas leak. I've been taking that risk my entire life and don't have any plans on cooking on electric anytime soon.

I'm new to watching washing machine videos. I haven't seen the recirculation feature before, but I love how it looks. What are the benefits? Is there a dedicated pump for recirculation?
@@naranjojo No sir it's a shared feature of one main pump
a new theory about how this machine works just popped into my head: because the wig-wag continues moving back and forth while draining out water, it leads me to believe there is a mechanism above it that is hidden by the outer tub, which moves a gear away from the output shaft of the transmission when the timer advances into a drain portion. then, when the machine advances to a spin portion, the mechanism moves that gear back onto the shaft, with the grind-click-clunk noise being caused by the shaft moving while the gear is trying to get back on the shaft; some belt drive machines seem to stop the motor briefly just before spin, so that i guess the mechanism can move the gear back into place without the noise

@@seana806 Yes, I am Brazilian and I know that both Brastemp and Consul are two Brazilian brands that belong to Whirlpool. But in fact, the story behind it is that Brastemp was formerly a car maker named "Brasmotor" and manufactured the first Volkswagen Fusca (Beatle) in Brazil. This is the short story "Whirlpool do Brasil".

@@seana806 correct. so why are machines today required to have lid locks? What happened? Did somebody fall in and get injured?
@@annettea6402 the whole reason why they have to lock the lid is there’s no tub break, with any of the older machines when open the lid, it’ll come to a stop or in this case, will disengage the solenoid for spin, will energize and re-engage.
The agitator looks like the gears or dogs may be stripped. Otherwise, a beautiful machine.
These machines don’t use agitator dogs since it’s a long stroke transmission. Shorter stroke transmissions need a dual action agitator since they don’t have all that more torque to move and generate currents of water compared to the longer stroke transmissions.

Dou you think you could run this machine off a battery bank and get a full clean?
The noise you are hearing is the upper bearing and another thing I’ll need to do is replace the bearings and I have new bearings for it along with a new spin tube but have no way to install the new bearings since I don’t have a bearing puller or installer.
Listen to that wig-wag wig-wagging!
Seems to be more pronounced on the older Whirlpool built machines from 1964 and up. Reason why it was changed in 1965 was to help quiet them down a little.
My folks purchased whirlpool in 1970 with four people that was a lot of washing 27 years.today's are junk
A majority of machines made today don’t have the greatest quality, but thankfully Speed Queen still makes something that washes and rinses decent, though.

That’s the solenoid kicking in for the spin :)
@@seana806 Yes. That's why I highlighted those timestamps. To hear that wigwag grind clunk. That's the best sounding one so far on RUclips.
@@jasonsadventures64 I think that could be since this is 4K in 60 fps. Not many other videos of these machines in 4K at 60 fps here on RUclips with the exception of Lorain Furniture and even then, you can’t really here the solenoid engage on the videos he recorded in 2018 which explains why this is the second most viewed Whirlpool belt drive and the video of the 1959 Kenmore Eighty that Swestoyz uploaded back in 2013. I think if I record my full cycle videos like this one, it may end up going viral since this is the only 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII on RUclips at the moment not to mention it’s turquoise.
So clean😮
For sure. Definitely gets clothes clean, too.
