  • Washing a medium-ish load of towels in the 1963 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII and yes the upper bearing is making some noise and hopefully I am able to obtain the bearing installer tool I need to install the new bearings and seals I have for it.

God I miss that gentle woo-woo sound of these washers. My mom had a 1964 Whirlpool washer and dryer set she got when we were kids and I will never forget that trademark whirlpool sound. That set lasted her almost 25 years through some very heavy usage.

Thanks! I got this set out of pure luck and I’ve literally seen no others around except for the 1964 versions. Reason why they don’t make machines like this is the government is too involved with everything these days, cheap and careless consumers, and corporate greed is why machines aren’t made like this anymore plus a machine like this would be anywhere from $1000 to $1500 and no one would want to spend that kind of money on something that can only hold 8 pounds of laundry since everyone literally needs a machine to wash a damn comforter but many people forget comforters didn’t exist back in the 60’s so a tub that could hold 8 to 9 pounds of laundry was more than plenty.

Most of these older machines cleaned fairly quickly along with doing a respectable job in that timeframe as well. Maytag suggested with their wringer and automatic washers in the early 60’s to wash stuff for 3 to 5 minutes that was normal soil level. Tried that, wow! Cycle times were a little less and sometimes over 20 minutes but that’s quick compared to today. Of course there will be those people who claim that older appliances aren’t as efficient etc. but in reality, it’s the same amount of electricity. It’s just the older machines get done faster while the newer machines just take their sweet time getting things done to satisfy the idiots in the EPA and DOE.
