Maybe the Bonnie just needed a few days for the electrics to really dry out as well , or it was sulking after you left it out outside for week in the rain. I think you have to show it more love ❤

As a precaution Freddie I would spray all the handlebar switches and the ignition barrel with WD40 or similar. Using the thin pipe attachment. I think the problem was water was shorting your electrics. It may well have dried out now but by spraying you will prevent future corrosion within the terminals. Also take off side panels and spray there too.
    Lovely video of Rye! 👍

The US Navy carried out tests using ACF-50 on the jets on their Aircraft Carriers. They found that ACF-50 so significantly reduced the corrosion they had previously experienced they now use ACF-50 all the time!”

Freddie, I wouldn’t use WD40 on the switches or ignition. If there's a problem with any of those in the short term WD40 might help, in the longer term it'll just make things worse as it'll just attract more dust and dirt. Use Graphite powder on any thing that uses a key. For the switches use a can of compressed air and gently spray any gunk out of them

    • @JLOSTAFF1

@@paulro4I have to disagree. Been using it for years and years on motorcycle switches. I’m 64 and never had a problem. The switches are covered so no muck should enter. I appreciate we all have our thoughts on what’s right and wrong. I can only base my advice on my trouble free experiences?

In my 28 years of motorbike ownership I've had plenty of Regulator rectifiers break & I heavily suspect that the battery wasn't charging & that's why it ran badly on 1 & half cylinders & then cut out .

      Rye is so beautiful!
Check the charging of the Boneville. Get a voltmeter. Check the voltage with everything off, then start the bike. Check the voltage at idle and at higher revs. At higher revs it should read over 13 volts. If it doesn’t, you have a charging problem. If it does, you have a bad battery. They are expensive but I love lithium batteries. If there’s no parasitic drain they will hold a charge for a year. They typically weigh about 1/3 of a lead acid or AGM battery.

You want to look for 14v when running, if its less than this you will just drain the battery every time you're out! Good luck!!

I replaced the battery in my Rocket 3 with a lithium ferrous phosphate unit... like 7 years ago I think. Still in perfect working order, and the bike is in a northern climate and gets parked up every winter. Solid investment. That said, even for lead acid batteries, having a trickle charger plugged in to the bike if it has to stand around for any amount of time makes a lot of sense; leave a connector cable attached so you can just fish the cable out from under the seat. Lead-acid batteries last best when they're topped up, as soon as they start getting low on charge they start sulfating up on the inside and just corroding to death basically. If the battery has failed you once - strong recommendation to discard it and buy new. Normal ones are cheap. Also, you may want to fire the bike up with the seat off again and put a multimeter over the battery poles and measure the voltage. If it's not over 14 volts, you may have a stator issue (under 14 volts, a 12 volt lead battery isn't charging).

Great film as usual - great ride destination, beautifully filmed and narrated! It could be that idling the bike with the headlamp on for that time took enough out of the battery to lower the voltage so it turned itself off, so it maybe ok, if not, then it’s the charge/voltage regulator which is probably at fault🤞

I used to have a 2009 Bonnerville which suffered from battery problems and finally i had to buy another one. Not from Triumph obviously but it is annoying that's for sure.

you should get a multi meter and check your Charging voltage should be around 14v at idle if you arn't getting that you may have a electrical issue

Love Rye - we’re Westerham / Sevenoaks area and probably go once a month if we can - let the dogs run amok on Camber, then head into Rye.. always the perfect day whatever the weather, and autumn/winter I think gives it a new beauty, it’s my favourite time to be there.

Love this place, try to get here as often as possible. Did you know the author John Ryan lived here, he wrote Captain Pugwash.

Im no expert.. but handy tip to avoid fuse issues with battery start (I learnt the hard way..) but always attach the positive first then the negative when jump starting.

Pure joy Fred seeing the worry and anxiety gone off your face. I was sure you had drowned it in the puddles previously. I have a power pack and use it and lend it out great little tools. I also bought my 3 daughters one for Xmas last year, always buy them screenwash, plug in heated seats( abs superb). The battery probably died when in storage Fred. It only needs a slight sulphate and it’s the end soon. I would still give it a run to see if the rectifier is working to enable alternator to work. It could have been why cut out after 20 mins as rectifier not permitting charging. It wont affect starting. Put lights on etc to use all battery. My guess is battery is fried and you should get another. Can test with a voltmeter if battery clapped out. Those deep puddles worry me and don’t know where rectifier and alternator are on the bike. Run the bike with headlights on to see if they fully bright or dim and flickers. If bike stopped after 20 mins may not been charging and caused flat. Get Monica to follow u for 20 mins. Also buy some electrical cleaner spray ( silicone) great forcwaterproofing stuff if a tad messy

Hey Freddie, love Rye, in fact I head down there most weekends on my bike from my home in SE London. Some fantastic biking roads in that part of the South East. One of my favourite routes is leaving Rye on the A259 towards Brookland. Stay on the A259 until you see the sign for Jos cafe. Take that turning and follow that road to Appledore and then just before Appledore take a left turn onto the military road back to Rye. Great little circuit. The B2089 from Rye towards the A21 is also a cracking road.

Rye is a great place for a ride out, so much to see! Sussex is a good place to ride, but I’m biased! The filming was amazing Monika. Just loved it..Have a great week!

All is well with the world when your bike starts on-the-button. I still think you should keep looking at newer alternatives, though! (Don't want to waste too much time spannering!)

Yes I agree. An old bike teaches you new skills. My rolling museum piece has me well outside my comfort zone at times. Rebuilding brake calipers, nightmares of getting it wrong. They work well now.

Love your videos Freddie. And I'm glad your bike started, but I'm concerned that the bike's charging system is failing. I would have someone check out the charging system. It may be the problem was the wet, but I wouldn't trust it on a trip until I had it checked.
