It makes me think he also probably treated his wife the very same way. I’m not justifying anything he did and I’m not condoning it either. But we also need to remember this happened in the late 70’s. Back then it was just starting to change that it wasn’t condoned any longer to beat your wife if she didn’t do what her husband wanted her to do. Unless he beat her to the point of broken bones or a visible bruise or a fat lip or knocked out teeth. That was usually the only time a man was told to leave his wife alone. It was also the same thing with beating your kid. You could spank them just short of broken bones, leaving bruises, a fat lip, or knocking out teeth. A man was permitted to beat his wife and children if he felt like it. And a woman could beat her children without recourse unless she went to far. Then in the mid 80’s it started becoming a issue. And men started being made accountable. But until around sometime in the late eighties a woman couldn’t even get a credit card without getting her husband or Father’s permission to. And then he needed to make sure she understood the responsibility a having a credit card. So if she got divorced then she would have to wait until she could prove she could afford it. Or if her husband was a little bit decent and he agreed to sign for her. So to being a woman married to a abusive man she was SOL the police weren’t interested in protecting and serving the woman.

Dustin was generally harassing women working with him, actresses and others... one recalled how she asked what he wanted for lunch, and he said in front of everyone: a soft boiled cl....is.... she was humiliated... Horrible jerk
They couldn’t get Justin Henry to cry at the goodbye scene at the end so Dustin said to him off camera, ‘you know when we’re done you probably won’t see me and Meryl again’, cue tears and Dustin motioning to the Director to start shooting😊
Wow. The entitlement of Dustin Hoffman. And the power dynamic. Meryl has been in Hollywood a long time…I’m sure she’s been through many situations like this…with no recourse.
They show the clip of Kramer versus Kramer And people were losing their minds, because Meryl Streep’s character left the child to take care of her mental health, and then came back And everyone was raking her over the coals And I thought she did but she should’ve done was to leave the child with the father The other parent Well, you who is facing mental difficulties, got help Crazy how people are “don’t leave your child no matter how bad you are don’t ever leave your child !” He was with his father So crazy
What was very wrong about her leaving her child, was the WAY it was done. No explanation. No goodbye. No mommy needs a break, but will be back. Horrible, horrible, horrible to just completely disappear. 😢😤
Dustin also taunted Meryl off screen about the recent death of her partner John Cazale in an attempt to make the scene more 'real'. Just something I read in the Meryl biography. Dustin Hoffman is talented but insufferably Method lol
He sat next to me one day at Columbia studios. I was struck by the fact his feet didn't touch the floor. It was like sitting next to a four year old. He kept glancing at me as if amazed that I wasn't reacting to sitting next to him. I pretended not to notice him, which was quite a feat ... the bench only held the two of us.
I was watching Mrs Robinson the other day and for the first time realized what a tiny person Dustin is. I saw George Clooney in person and he was also a tiny scrawny little man too. The camera makes them look so much bigger.

We may not agree with it but it worked. Any hard feelings she might of had, it seems like she got over it. It won her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar!
In general all actors have their charmes. It has to be so, because they sell their charmes and their attraction, it's their job. For me, Dustin Hoffman always was an exception to this. For some reason I allways found him unlikeable in some way. Now I know why. It fits. Thank you marvelous Merryl for winning the Oscar for your 15 min of great acting. That slapped him back in exact the right way.
That is horrible he did that to her! I don’t care if he was trying to “get her in the right headspace” or not. There was no need to assault her!! If this has happened today he probably would have been booted out of Hollywood or something. What an ass.
Hoffman was always a method actor and was known for doing odd crap like this to himself and others in order get the best result. It's BS imo but I'm sure his opinion was, "I'll make her really hate me so it looks genuine on screen"..
Meryl is so professional and graceful in spirit, although she is capable of returning a hard slap, she’s far above that level. An exceptional actress, beautiful soul. ❤🙏💕
I think she's just acknowledging the motivation behind why he did it, not that it was right. He had a long history of being a jerk to anyone he didn't think was giving it their all and would psychologically or physically manipulate them to get a reaction. He'd do it to himself too, like stay awake for days at a time or run for miles to appear exhausted for a scene. He was one of the more obnoxious "method" actors ever.
@tronam My annoyance is about famous actresses bragging about tolerating misogyny as 'war wounds' and only fought against to take credit for Rowan Farrow's and undermine their friend Trump. Before and after that, it's business as usual.
Look how beautiful she is, I love every film she's been in, what an actress she is I used to love watching Johnathon Ross He always had great guests, with the best stories. She will never age
It's unforgivable to do something like that. People can get really scarred. Even if had improved her performance, it wouldn't have been worth it. Acting isn't _that_ important
And, the studio Elites, eventually had him on screen, IN A DRESS, BECAUSE that's the sign you wont be working a lot for a really long time! Ever let them get you into a dress !
I dislike Dustin so strongly it’s insane. I was watching Kramer vs Kramer and just though “No idea why but I hate that man. He just looks like somebody I should hate.” Then right after the movie ended this was the first clip to pop up. Later I was watching Series of Unfortunate Events and almost screamed when I saw that he played the critic. He has no right even playing a critic. Meryl played Aunt Josephine in that movie (quite well might I add)
As a Gen X that grew up in the late 70’s, it’s amazing to look back and see how many people behaved themselves. I have a friend that says nothing ever shocks her anymore. I think she’s really lucky because these motherfuckers shock the HELL outta me on a daily basis.
Well and her superior acting. She is literally the best actress in Hollywood. How did she succeed in other movies without getting assaulted? Sophie’s choice would have been better if someone had actually killed one of her children irl by that logic 😂😂😂
You can see this mature woman turn right back in to that young woman here before our eyes. How many of us older mature women are taken back sometimes to when we were younger, weaker, frustrated. Hate him for making her feel that way. Glad she made the most of it.
That movie perfectly captured what can happen when two people stop communicating in their marriage. I always felt that love, trust, and communication were the main ingredients for the success of a marriage.
I've seen two Streep clips in the past few days. She's talking about experiences that would take a long time to get over. The other occurred when she was auditioning for 'King Kong' and the producer said, in Italian, that she was too ugly. Just wondering when she figured out all this awful stuff is karma for being the very best. I bet she has too many stories like this. Kinda funny she's from Yale. How did THAT happen?
Great actress. Amazing movie. She went to grade school at my elementary school. She then moved to a more affluent area for junior high and high school.
That film made me cry. We saw it right after my parents split. We were a product of divorce. It came out right after our parents split. What a fun king fantastic movie. No matter what you wanna say about what Dustin did that movie was magic
People don’t get what she is saying… she actually is admiring his commitment to the character and getting the best performance… the ignorance in this chat is overwhelming…
No. YOU don't get what she's saying. She is well-known for disliking Dustin Hoffman, because of the way he treated her while filming this movie. And she ends the story saying that today he would be "sued" for such behavior. There is no admiration in this story.
I don’t even think the slap was a bad idea. I think a conversation at the beginning of working together regarding doing things like this randomly throughout the working process to get eachother into the right mind frame would have been more appropriate. So yes it worked, but him thinking she actually needed it or wanted it is presumptuous and patronising. She’s a professional, if she wants or needs help let her ask for it or at least have a conversation about it.
@@libbyworkman3459It'd be interesting to hear Dustin's recollections of shooting this film. I imagine he'd been immersed in gritty realism making Midnight Cowboy. And remember before you type anything else to let people know how smart/dumb you are, I'm not commenting on the 1st response. My comment was placed right where it needed to be. Do you need a map?
I wonder if anyone has interviewed Dustin about this?
Of course not, he's not going to admit to assaulting a woman!
I read he said he did it purposely to make her hate him for the next scene. She admits here that it worked. It's actually interesting to read here her reaction, knowing what he was going for in advance of filming. I also thought that he said he apologized to her afterward, because he thought she wasn't getting the proper mood down, and though she said here she thought she was "properly upset", he wanted her to be more authentic. It worked.
@@KP-mb9jxoh FFS she’s nowhere near as upset as you are. 😂

Can you imagine the stories this brilliant women has about hollywood. We need a tell all please. Shes an amazing actress.
She has been totally amazing in the third season of Only Murders in the Building. Her audition scene and her lullaby song scene were remarkable.
It’s a crap series- Selena is the best actress there- how sad is that Dreyfus has lost his ability to act ??
Meryl looks so beautiful. I was wondering why she looks so good and natural and now it’s obvious. She isn’t made up like a drag queen; she doesn’t have slugs or overly bushy eyebrows; and no trout pout; and her face moves. Beautiful.
You forgot to mention that she she seems to have naturally amazing genes and there's not a wrinkle on her face. Otherwise everyone here would be talking about what an old hag she's become. Women can't win.
Also. But it's rather her shining from inside and modesty while being one of the best, if not THE best actress of present time.
She's also quite a unique beauty. She lets that unique natural beauty shine through. Pretty black vneck, soft ponytail, and gold hoops. Perfect frame.
& you "can't" see all the botox in her forehead?🤔🤔 Or the judiciously applied filler in her lips & face? (They just have Surgeons who know better than Beauticians with 3 days/3 weeks trsining that's all - but Meeyl is a beautiful woman💜💜 (& she has had at least 2 facelifts & gers regular botox & filler) go look at how old she is - ofc she's had work done!🙏🏻💜

This lady is absolutely the BEST actress in Hollywood! Anything for her craft.❤
How dare he do something like this?!
May be to make her angry for the role. But must be other methods.

They couldn’t get Justin Henry to cry at the goodbye scene at the end so Dustin said to him off camera, ‘you know when we’re done you probably won’t see me and Meryl again’, cue tears and Dustin motioning to the Director to start shooting😊
She’s so beautiful 🥰
Wow. The entitlement of Dustin Hoffman. And the power dynamic. Meryl has been in Hollywood a long time…I’m sure she’s been through many situations like this…with no recourse.
They show the clip of Kramer versus Kramer
And people were losing their minds, because Meryl Streep’s character left the child to take care of her mental health, and then came back
And everyone was raking her over the coals
And I thought she did but she should’ve done was to leave the child with the father
The other parent
Well, you who is facing mental difficulties, got help
Crazy how people are “don’t leave your child no matter how bad you are don’t ever leave your child !”
He was with his father
So crazy
What was very wrong about her leaving her child, was the WAY it was done. No explanation. No goodbye. No mommy needs a break, but will be back. Horrible, horrible, horrible to just completely disappear. 😢😤
Dustin also taunted Meryl off screen about the recent death of her partner John Cazale in an attempt to make the scene more 'real'. Just something I read in the Meryl biography. Dustin Hoffman is talented but insufferably Method lol
no he did not. You think they’d let him do that & neither would she.
@@joycegibbs5267 This is a known fact. Do your research. I'm not doing it for you.
No, a scumbag that hates women!!

Cazale was a fantastic actor.
So what if he's short
I was watching Mrs Robinson the other day and for the first time realized what a tiny person Dustin is. I saw George Clooney in person and he was also a tiny scrawny little man too. The camera makes them look so much bigger.

I wonder if Hoffman ever apologized to her for that slap?
In his egotistical grey matter he thinks he did her a favor - that she needed it.
dustin didn't do this to improve meryl's repartee, he did it because he's a misogynist
Exactly. He did it to exert his "dOmInOn" over her. Because he was threatened by her and needed to exert power over her. Total loser. No surprise he hasn't acted in anything in forever.
@@lyndaanneshopy’all are dead on. This is horrific to hear.

Insufferably method says it all for me
I think he intentionally sought those kinds of roles out, overly obsessed with "method acting". He never wanted to be a traditional leading man.
Love Dustin Hoffman. One of the greatest actors to have ever lived.
That is horrible he did that to her! I don’t care if he was trying to “get her in the right headspace” or not. There was no need to assault her!! If this has happened today he probably would have been booted out of Hollywood or something. What an ass.
She’s my all time favorite actress!! And my all time favorite movie is one of hers, “The Bridges of Madison County.” 💕💕
You can tell she is still bothered by that as she should be
Meryl has always been my favorite actress it’s just something very special about her.
Hoffman was always a method actor and was known for doing odd crap like this to himself and others in order get the best result. It's BS imo but I'm sure his opinion was, "I'll make her really hate me so it looks genuine on screen"..
YES AND THE LOOK ON YOUR FACE AS YOU WALKED LITERALLY SAID IT ALL. IT WORKED

Meryl is so professional and graceful in spirit, although she is capable of returning a hard slap, she’s far above that level. An exceptional actress, beautiful soul. ❤🙏💕
'He set me up for the scene'
She is still justifying it
I think she's just acknowledging the motivation behind why he did it, not that it was right.
Look how beautiful she is,
I love every film she's been in, what an actress she is
I used to love watching Johnathon Ross
He always had great guests, with the best stories.
She will never age
Kramer vs. Kramer. Such a good movie. That's horrible he slapped her

It's unforgivable to do something like that. People can get really scarred. Even if had improved her performance, it wouldn't have been worth it. Acting isn't _that_ important
I love her!
Absolutely disgusting behavior on his part. I never liked him and now I know why.
I find Meryl exceptional in two film, one Sofie’s choice and Kramer. Her emotion is so raw. Such amazing and intelligent actor she is!
Maybe they’ll encounter one another again and she can just slap the fudge out of him
Much respect for this woman.
Yeah apparently Dustin got away with a lot cr@p back then
And, the studio Elites, eventually had him on screen, IN A DRESS, BECAUSE that's the sign you wont be working a lot for a really long time! Ever let them get you into a dress !
My alarms go off when I think of him.
If he tried that today he’d be a dead man walking or perhaps doing regional theater in Florida.
Great movie, all these years I remember it well 😢😢❤❤❤
Imagine someone slapped you at work and got away with it. 😮
That movie was incredible, especially for that era.

I admire, Meryl as a performer and a beautiful sound woman❣
I so wanna slap Dusty rn
Hello Meryl Streep you should’ve slapped him back ❤❤❤❤❤😢😢😢.
Meryl Streep ❤️
Her loyalty to weistein was a slap in face of other actresses
Thats coz she is also a creep
She is smarter than that.
Quite a few actresses were silent about him. And others backed him up.
You can’t get much classier than Meryl Streep…
Meryl Streep is the epitome of grace. Do you recall how she handled a disrespectful, arrogant, orange politician?
She’s a menopausal egotist! She’s disrespectful and arrogant! Dustin didn’t do it hard enough
One of my favorite movies!!!
People, she is not mad because she knows she got an Oscar thanks to that slap.
Dustin is a legend
really? what's the last movie he was in?
That movie perfectly captured what can happen when two people stop communicating in their marriage. I always felt that love, trust, and communication were the main ingredients for the success of a marriage.
I've seen two Streep clips in the past few days. She's talking about experiences that would take a long time to get over. The other occurred when she was auditioning for 'King Kong' and the producer said, in Italian, that she was too ugly. Just wondering when she figured out all this awful stuff is karma for being the very best. I bet she has too many stories like this. Kinda funny she's from Yale. How did THAT happen?
She's extremely intelligent.. probably why Dustin hates her.
She is.. Jane HAD to be drop dead gorgeous..
Great actress. Amazing movie.
She went to grade school at my elementary school. She then moved to a more affluent area for junior high and high school.
He has been married many times.. beware!
@@tuckerplum8085 Ok.

@86sineadw. Dustin Hoffman was not in charge of getting Meryl Streep in the right mood to do any scene. What he did is plain and simply assault.
@@libbyworkman3459It'd be interesting to hear Dustin's recollections of shooting this film. I imagine he'd been immersed in gritty realism making Midnight Cowboy. Maybe he and Meryl rehearsed this scene, and Dustin unilaterally decided it lacked truthful human emotion - rage, disgust etc. He may have wanted a less 'clean', self-controlled performance from Meryl??
