Glad to see you’re still alive after all this time. I think 2023 has been crazy for everyone.
Wasn’t expecting the book reviews, but it was informative. I have no desire to read The Queen with no Name after hearing all this nonsense, and if half of it is true then I’m baffled that it receives as good of reviews as it does.
Randomizer seeds are always a joy. The perfect source of both human suffering and excitement, that both induces the titters and warms the soul. The infamous ‘YOU DIDN’T CHECK KAKARIKO WELL!?’ Lives rent free in my head for a reason. Also Black Mage Benjamin(now known as Benjamage)’s experience with the wackiness of the Sonic Adventure 2 Randomizer mod, which culminated with the reveal of Eggman running around in a Sonic costume as a potential character choice, which Ben got bribed into making his Twitter profile picture for 2 weeks(a day for ever 2 dollars gifted).
Randomizers exist for modern games like Fire Emblem Three Houses, but I have no idea how they even work. I am aware that it is possible to mod Switch games via some jail breaking-like shenanigans that involve downloading a mod file into a specially prepped mini-SD card. Probably has to have the digital version of the game on there and you have to patch the game yourself. The only mod for a Switch game that really caught my eye was a mod for Breath of the Wild where someone modded it so Zelda was the player character, and they put painstaking work into a lot of content to make sure it would at least function and make the mod function as an unofficial alternate character mode rather than just a skin swap mod. I remember seeing that the mod’s creator had put work into redesigning quite a few costumes to better match Zelda , like redoing the Gerudo clothes and armor to better match up with more standard Gerudo attire designs as Zelda had no need for the gender concealment aspect of the Gerudo Cothes (and I think they actually programmed it so that The player was allowed into Gerudo Town freely with the Mod active, or they actually altered lines from NPCs to recontextualize why the player would be barred from entry and kicked out if they entered via alternate methods but lacked the necessities to circumvent the banned entry). I’m ending the mod talk here cause it’s going too long.
I do take some offense to the derision of buying 3DS games in 2023, cause this year I ended up buying the Castlevania DS trilogy(Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia) and playing all of them through to near 100 percent completion. I enjoyed all of them and I could definitely feel where some of the design in Bloodstained came from and how Bloodstained improved upon Castlevania’s designs. Miriam’s Shard system now feels like she’s the natural next step of both Soma’s Soul system and Shanoa’s Glyph system. The similarities also made me feel the inadequacies of Soma’s potential equipment loadout, with just how little equipment he was allowed to use at a given time in comparison to Miram, as well as Jonathan, Charlotte, and Shanoa. Plus it was especially jarring to have Bloodstained where it allowed a slot exclusive for familiars and then Dawn of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia had the player be forced to choose between an ability to use or having the familiar. Though my trip through the DS Castlevania games has inspired me to buy Harmony of Despair if it ever re-releases again.
Anyways, glad I got to watch this before 2024 rolled around. I look forward to having new Brickroad content again. Seriously, the lack of Brick’s ridiculousness has made me dig up old RUclips stuff I used to watch. I went back to Game Grumps and got a chance to enjoy them again, and even went back to Olizandri after not watching him in years. Mainly watched him for Star Fox but then I took a look at some of his more recent LPs since Star Fox and ended up watching him play a lot of IGAvania era titles which was a big factor in my decision to buy the DS Castlevania trilogy.
