I think that there is a group of people that you both may have missed. As in grouping things together there is always a group of things that don't fit neatly into anyone of the groups, I usually call this group miscellaneous, there are usually several different items. Just want to point out, that you missed some people with this synopsis, I don't fit into either.

In the rest of the developed world home schooling is a big potion of the student population. When national standards were set it became open season on every syllabus. Religious dogma goes largely unchallenged. The actual cost of an education has grown so high that like universal healthcare is a price the USA is not prepared to pay. The anti science stance of contempt is driven from tea party lunatics who barely got past high school and the rest by gun toting crazies that never saw the last year of high school. If you don't have affordable schooling you are leaving an underclass that will always be disgruntled not just about science and knowledge but laws, equal rights and their place in the community. Look at the divisions in society and tell me if these problems start at school or not. The results speak for themselves.
