Yes, exactly. For instance, we use Dr. Bronner's soap. Lately I've been buying two and stocking one away, because it's essentially locking in the 2024 price for something I know we'll use. Sometimes I pressure can a bunch of meals (we do have a root cellar where I can store things) knowing that I'm locking in current meat prices. It's a balancing act for sure.
Thank you so much for crediting Dana K White for the container concept. So many creators don’t. This makes me know you are a good creator and have wonderful content as well. Happy holidays and thanks for another great video.
This is my year to stop buying, & ridding my house of at least 40% of items, I almost lost my 38 yr old son 2 wks ago & I realized nothing in my house is more important than family & health ty Taryn so much
I live in NZ and I went crazy and stocked up on so much stuff when I knew I was going to retire ( end of 2021). I don’t need anything, so no spend 2025, de clutter and give up added sugar and processed food. I’m excited as a 68 year old to achieve my goals. When you retire you need so little. I walk my dog everyday on the beach so I just live in active wear unless I go out and I have more than enough of everything. Thanks.
@@paulinesligo1774 you are an inspiration! I am 66 and have purchased far too much for my retirement lifestyle, using shopping and "nest feathering" as a hobby. Your comment is eye-opening...Thanks for sharing! 😊✨👏🩷
I have a few of the same things on my list! Suggest you stop browsing the internet like I will do and think multiple times before buying any kitchen gadgets (e.g. tortilla press). Best of luck to us all in reducing the flow of stuff into our homes in 2025!!
My rational for buying duplicates of non-consumables is that the item will be discontinued or changed. I have an older pair of jeans that I love. I wish I had bought a few more pairs since I cannot replace them now that they are wearing out. Same with perfectly fitting underwear. Even if a company keeps the same style they may use lower quality fabric in the future. Jockey I'm looking at you!
That's so true. I always buy duplicates of items I use a lot. At some point, I will use them as quality and prices tend to change. I understand the idea of buying multiples is creating more stuff, but sometimes it's worth it.
I should done that with some jeans I bought and love. I wanted another pair went back to store and they didn’t have them anymore, and haven’t brought them back m. I was so upset cause they fit and feel great🤦🏻♀️
I totally agree with you on the packaging. Not only is it wasteful, but it's hard to open and mostly isn't recyclable. I am going to be more mindful about that! Thanks for your tips Taryn!
I have stopped buying some things from Amazon when the item only comes in multi packs. If I only need one hook, I don't want a package of 6. Instant clutter reducer! 😂
My low bank account keeps me from bringing anything new into my home. Lol. But I’m not donating all my things I don’t want. Hanging onto to some of it to join forces with some neighbors and having a big yard sale next summer 😊
We went to an older family members home for Thanksgiving. OMG, I told my husband that if I complain about to much stuff in our house that I should recall how I felt at their house. I was overwhelmed!! Chochkees (so) everywhere!!!!
You can make tortillas by pressing them between two sheets of cling film or wax paper or parchment paper. Just roll a rolling pin over it. You don't need a press. If you want to cut down on packaging, many stores (but especially Whole Foods and co-ops) sell bulk items, so there's very little packaging. Also, the amount of time you spend prepping the recycling of packaging is probably equal or less than making mixes from scratch and probably healthier. Like make pancake mix from scratch and store it in sealed jars. Make your own granola or trail mix or fruit & nut bars. Form and freeze your own burgers. Make your own salad dressings. I'm coming out of food insecurity caused by my childhood in poverty. I hoard canned goods and boxed foods. For 2025, I'm going to work out a basic staples list and determine how many items of each I can realistically use in one year. I'll keep that many of each of the freshest foods and donate the rest. If I keep a spreadsheet of this and reinventory once a week, I can keep things clean, use up what's about to turn, and save money overall. I can then use the data to modify my estimated usage. I live alone, I'm retired; I have the time for this. Frankly, a lot of people have too much stuff because they're afraid they might need something later, so they don't want to throw it out. They might have suffered poverty when they were younger, they may have struggled needing something they couldn't afford to go buy; parents in general, but especially single parents go through that.
I think you're awesome. I look forward to your videos. They are always well thought out, interesting, and very motivational. I was surprised you mentioned buying duplicates. That is something I do. I feel the quality and price will change before I need another one. Thank you for another awesome video. 😊
Thank you so much Cheryl! ❤ You are right about the quality and price maybe changing. I am going to try not to do duplicates for 2025 and see how it goes!
In 2024, I didn’t buy any lotions, perfume or body splashes, no nail polish, no cleaners, no toiletries in general. No makeup. I did good. I had SO much ! Can’t organize until things are decluttered.
Same. I'm down to five makeup products. No replacement until I use up what I have. When I run out, I can either rebuy the same product or find a different brand. But not before its used up.
@11Renee11 I'm not missing anything. Ask before presuming. You're a complete stranger who doesn't know me. You're the one not understanding. I mentioned I need moisturizers as I suffer eczema. I never EVER mentioned anything about nail polish. Goodbye! I will not justify myself to a stranger. Leave me alone. Do not reply to me
I had to chuckle when you spoke about buying duplicates. Guilty!! I guess I’m afraid I won’t be able to find them again in the future. Shoes as well. When I find a great pair I always think what will I do when these wear out. Maybe I better keep a pair in reserve. And the other colors are great as well…🤨
Great video, Taryn. Your channel just keeps getting better. I love these ideas -- I, too, am annoyed at all the packaging foods come in but hadn't really focused on a constructive way to deal with it. This year I'll make an effort. Also, duplicates -- lots of times I'll buy a shirt or pants I like in triplicate or even more! The bizarre process my brain goes through is something like this: "Should I buy two? Ugh, I wasn't planning on spending that much right now. Oh, what the heck, I'll buy three, I'll use them." It's like I bypass the initial resistance to buying more -- by buying more! Is that crazy or what? BTW, I've gotten into some new habits with your suggestions from earlier videos. I turn off the stove a couple minutes before a dish finishes cooking. Also stopped washing my face with cleanser in the morning, only in the evening now. And I'm doing quick bathroom cleanings while I'm in there. So many great tips.
I love watching your videos, when I watch them! I love how real you are, such as the way we stuff things. For example, I stuff my drawers and/ or closets. It makes me laugh when I can relate to what you suggest we do to declutter. I always fesl so good when I declutter and give away items that I am not using. Our trash can be someone's treasure! There are so many local organizations where the people appreciate in good condition items - domestic violence victims, mental health people ( who sometimes have family members who do not support them at all, but show up when that person paases away - a real shame!) and homeless and poor people. Do the right thing.... donate😊
My clutter comes from me being old. I'm lucky to have reached 63 with many technology changes. However, now I have STUFF! You have some really good ideas I would like to try. I enjoyed this video. 😊❤
I like these items. I'm going to work on reducing the amount of things I "stuff" into my containers. I also need to stop buying duplicate items or even stuff of buy 3 for $10. I don't want to clutter my space anymore. Thanks for the ideas!
Great suggestions. I tend to purchase two of the same shirt when I find one I really like. Just in a different color. I stop liking them both at the same time!
I was a store manager. My co manager , when we got new clothes in, and she liked something, she bought EVERY color ! And she charged it !!! Ugh. I did help her to get her debt paid down and not buy so much !
As for not buying duplicates, sometimes when you find something you really like, you buy more than one because when you go back, they no longer have that model anymore. Bras being a great example. I have such a hard time finding a comfortable bra. I've found them in the past and when I needed a new one I couldn't find it anymore. Other than that, I agree with you. :)
If you are making flour tortillas, no need for a press. A roller does it. The press is for corn tortillas. Gadgets are our problem with clutter. I think twice now before buying. And we rarely buy processed food in boxes, or cans either.
I watched the whole video , thank you. Now will play again and will only listen, as I get to business focusing on your idea of 80% is enough! Stopping the stuffing!
There are some companies that have actually improved their packaging. Vital Proteins collagen peptides. They have changed from using a scoop and a plastic container to paper board container and no scoop. They give directions to just use 2 tablespoons. The scoop really isn’t necessary, and I’ve collected so many anyways.
Great ideas! I particularly like the one about bringing in less packaging with food. I make an effort to do that and then start to forget. :-) So this is a good reminder.
My goal next year is to declutter to the point that I can touch every single thing I own in a day - and ask myself if it is necessary and if it is in the right spot. I am nearly there, once I am I intend to do this every new year to keep myself feeling peace and calm - and to know exactly what I own and am responsible for.
I've been using the KonMari method in drawers and closets for a few years. It saves a lot of space and it's easy to see everything and select what you want. It's much better than stacking clothes or undies.
But sometimes when you go back to buy the duplicate the store no longer makes it so that’s why I’m so glad I bought a bunch of the T-shirts that I wear back from 2007 for summer
I really enjoyed the video! I have decided to stop taking anything to store upstairs. I had done really well to declutter my easily accessible attic and an extra bedroom pre-pandemic. We basically live on the first floor except for our offices. Then I went a little nuts with extras including some food and supplies . My goal now is to use up and/ or declutter again in 2025. In addition, we bought an extra freezer when our old one failed (but were then able to fix). My goal is to get them pared down considerably so that I can consolidate into one prior to gardening season next year. I want to leave the second one off until needed next fall at harvest.
Containers (Dana K. White concept). Thinning out the contents of any type of the “containers” I have produced the most valuable side effect: it’s so much easier to pick out the item I really want and so easy to get rid of even more of the “marginally” useful I own. Truly has simplified my life, eased keeping things organized and, as for my closet, it’s lovely as the only things in there are the ones I use and love. Thank you
I hate shopping (except groceries…cooking is my happy place). If I find a shirt or something that I like and it works well, I buy multiples. I like variety in color or patterns but most of my work wardrobe is the same 3 shirt styles from JC Penney, especially if it’s 3/4 sleeve…so practical! And I have 5 pairs of black slip on pants from Amazon that I wear every day. Duplicates definitely have a place. (As us preppers say, 2 is one, and one is none - if you need it!)
I buy multiple colors of clothing, too. So far, I do wear them all. But you make an excellent point. My question is how do you choose the ONE to purchase when several colors are great and perfect for you? That is where I struggle, and why I end up with the additional items.
Such a good question! Maybe something to try is buying one color and then if after a month you're still loving and wearing it, then get the second color?
@@tarynmaria_I've gone back for another color of an item a week later and it's not there. Would rather buy the extra right away. You can keep the tags on and return it if you're not thrilled with the first.
Try to set a limit for yourself (virtual container). Let's say six tops with short sleeves is your limit. Are you in this limit? Then buy both colours. Are you not? Choose the colour giving you more combinations with your other clothes or whichever you really need for specific combinations.
My best takeaway: when using the container method aim for 50% to 80% full. This keeps me from overstuffing and allows the space to be more useful so I can see what I have and access it easily.
As far as the container factor for storing any particular item, what I do is, when 25%of the space left, I consider it full. This prevents over filling them.
You’ve given me some great ideas which I am going to incorporate into my goals for the coming year. I plan to downsize everything I own by 50% during the coming year, heading into retirement.
The way I approached clutter especially when I moved into my first house in September, give a lot away to the local buy nothing to connect with the community. Donation pickup on everythiong else I don't need or use enough to justify keeping. It's not that hard and it is fun and feels rewarding to help others.
Yeah I limited my packaging which I hated too boxes everywhere for food so I purchased airtight containers and two boxes of pasta will fit in one container and it's skinnier and more upright taller so I have that on a shelf different ones for different pastas and it looks so much nicer and there's not a bunch of boxes stamped in there. So yeah I hate the packaging too
Great suggestions. I’m going to refrain from purchasing any cleaning supplies. I have plenty of those that I like and need to use them up. I’m also going to try very hard not to purchase from Amazon except for recurring purchases of my vitamins, shampoo, contact solution. 😊
Know the difference between wants and needs. Write down what you think you need and wait at least 2 weeks. You'll likely have forgotten about the thing, found a work around or realize you don't need it.
Great video! I’m guilty of buying duplicates. This post reminded me that I need to take time to make a list of a select number of permitted purchases for 2025. I’m striving for a “no-buy 2025”.
I stopped buying anything that would turn into a project. That’s also how I look at items when I declutter. It’s HARD! I would love to do these projects, but I’m in my 60’s with Rheumatoid Arthritis and a developmentally disabled son to care for, so I have to be realistic about what I can get done. Did I say it was hard??? 😂
Everyone should try a use-it-up challenge for consumables like cleaning supplies, food, makeup, and toiletries. These are all things that start to degrade within a few years anyway.
My goal for 2025 is to make my home ready to have overnight visitors. I like to entertain but even time friends come over to stay, I get into a frenzy of hiding the clutter in bags and boxes. I will try to keep the house nice for my own sanity, I am very good at keeping my kitchen ready and nice to cook and I would like to extend that to my whole house. I enjoy my apace more when it is tidy.
What do you use for the dishwasher? I tried a DYI and then was really happy I found a box of store wash because the DIY wasn’t working🥴 Washing machine? Trying to use less chemicals too
For the dishwasher I have been using the Seventh Generation powder, which I really like. The laundry is harder - I do use the Blueland laundry pellets, which are great! I have a 15% link if you ever want to try Blueland (a company I love!) www.blueland.com/tarynmaria
Yes! So I use it on my shower curtain liner (I soak it in hot water and bit of bleach) and then occasionally I use it in my shower - we get mold in the corner and I put some bleach there. I also once in a while use it in my laundry with a load of white towels!
Huh, you don't need a tortilla press for flour tortillas. Roll into balls, let them rest and use a rolling pin to get them into an amoeba shape to prove they're homemade. Besides, haven't heard anyone who likes their press. And it takes up way too much room.
@@tarynmaria_ Hmm, bet you are using a ridiculous recipe that calls for baking powder. Baking powder is used for making flour rise - - - tortillas are flat bread. I don't know why so many recent recipes are calling for baking powder, smh. 2 Cups all purpose flour 1/2 C warm water 2 Tablespoons fat - any kind, butter margarine, meat fat, crisco 1/2 teaspoon salt Mix with your hands. Divide into 12 balls. Cover or not. Let rest 15 minutes. Drape a tea/kitchen towel from the drawer where you're working at and let it hang down over the bottom cabinets. The flying flour will get on the towel so you're not cleaning the cabinets! Heat a dry skillet. My electric stove gets set to #7 so med high. Dust flour on the counter and roll out a ball. Place on the hot dry skillet. Quickly, roll out the next ball. Flip the cooking tortilla. Finish, rolling out the current ball. With a fork, take the 1st tortilla and put on a plate. Put the second one in the skillet and quickly get the 3rd one rolled out. Do this factory style roll, cook, flip, cook and next. Or take your time, ymmv. You want to make Asian wraps? Same recipe but no fat in the dough. You will need a small bottle of sesame oil which will be the fat and also the Asian flavoring. It lasts FOREVER in the fridge. Store it in the fridge so it doesn't go rancid. OK, so you're rolling out the first wrap but get it as thin as you can/want. None of these need to be perfectly circular - amoeba shape is fine since they all get stuffed and rolled up so who cares. When ready to put the first one in the hot dry skillet, sprinkle in 4 drops of sesame oil and cook where they land - no need to spread it around. After 3-4 wraps are cooked, sprinkle on another 4 drops of sesame oil. If you see there is too much dry flour falling into the skillet, wipe it out. Fill the Asian wraps aka pancakes (yeah, they aren't pancakes but that's what they're called sometimes) with leftovers. Anything goes! I save the last bit of cabbage and shred it along with a shredded carrot, diced onion, we like the last bit of shredded pork and whatever is in the fridge and add whatever Asian spices and sauces like a stir fry. Heat and roll up. Can serve with a dipping sauce but it isn't needed.
Taryn, I appreciate your challenge of "stuffing" items into a space until it is 'over-full', but the concept of 'decluttering' items is out of perspective. People declutter Spaces. People CURATE items - I.e. we are selective in what we CHOOSE to have in our homes/lives because they are beautiful or currently useful (e.g. are used frequently or seasonally). The rest can be trashed, donated or, IF absolutely necessary, boxed up to be given away in 6 months "just in case". The "1 in, 1 out" rule should apply to everything else, including the items on one's calendar. My thoughts. I hope this helps.

I've noticed that a lot recently. I have to ask myself when I'm shopping if I really like the item or is the extravagant packaging what I am drawn to.
Yes!
There are some companies that have actually improved their packaging. Vital Proteins collagen peptides. They have changed from using a scoop and a plastic container to paper board container and no scoop. They give directions to just use 2 tablespoons. The scoop really isn’t necessary, and I’ve collected so many anyways.
Food for thought here , can definetly tell you put some time into this . Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Great ideas! I particularly like the one about bringing in less packaging with food. I make an effort to do that and then start to forget. :-) So this is a good reminder.
I'm so glad!
Love your content. A pleasure listening to you with all your ideas.
Thank you so much!
My goal next year is to declutter to the point that I can touch every single thing I own in a day - and ask myself if it is necessary and if it is in the right spot. I am nearly there, once I am I intend to do this every new year to keep myself feeling peace and calm - and to know exactly what I own and am responsible for.
What a great goal!
Now that IS a very intriguing idea! Hmm…
I've been using the KonMari method in drawers and closets for a few years. It saves a lot of space and it's easy to see everything and select what you want. It's much better than stacking clothes or undies.
Thank you for sharing!
It sounds like you're doing an awesome job!
Thank you
Thank you! ☺
I agree 👍
Thank you for sharing!
Great advice! The struggle is certainly real! 😢
For sure!
@tarynmaria_ thank you!
Thank you!
As far as the container factor for storing any particular item, what I do is, when 25%of the space left, I consider it full. This prevents over filling them.
Thank you for sharing!
You’ve given me some great ideas which I am going to incorporate into my goals for the coming year. I plan to downsize everything I own by 50% during the coming year, heading into retirement.
Wow, that's a great goal!
The way I approached clutter especially when I moved into my first house in September, give a lot away to the local buy nothing to connect with the community.
Donation pickup on everythiong else I don't need or use enough to justify keeping.
It's not that hard and it is fun and feels rewarding to help others.
Thank you for sharing!
I make flour tortillas in a regular pan. Soooo easy! My son says they're better than the ones in restaurants.
@@carlabrown4800 awesome!!
I tend to stock pile, especially items that I really like!
I know what you mean!
Good goals for 2025.
Thank you!
Online shopping is hard to stop. What I did was I removed the Amazon app from my phone. I only buy what I need and I use my son’s phone.
Good idea!
Great ideas. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
So yeah I hate the packaging too
Thank you for sharing!
Great suggestions. I’m going to refrain from purchasing any cleaning supplies. I have plenty of those that I like and need to use them up.
I’m also going to try very hard not to purchase from Amazon except for recurring purchases of my vitamins, shampoo, contact solution. 😊
Awesome, Cheryl! ☺❤
Know the difference between wants and needs. Write down what you think you need and wait at least 2 weeks. You'll likely have forgotten about the thing, found a work around or realize you don't need it.
Thank you!
Great video! I’m guilty of buying duplicates. This post reminded me that I need to take time to make a list of a select number of permitted purchases for 2025. I’m striving for a “no-buy 2025”.
Awesome, wishing you luck!
I love the 50-80% rule. Stuffed shelves and drawers really stress me out.
Yep those top shelves in my kitchen are hard to reach and I only put one layer there that sits on the front where I can see!
Thank you for sharing ☺
Great content. Thanks!
Thank you!!
Everyone should try a use-it-up challenge for consumables like cleaning supplies, food, makeup, and toiletries. These are all things that start to degrade within a few years anyway.
I totally agree - I can't wait to use up all of my skincare/makeup next year!
Great goals for 2025 😅
l copy-paste 👍🇩🇰
Thank you so much!
We had homemade pizza tonight. Zero packaging and crazy cheap.
Yum!
I do t like to stuff my drawers if it doesn’t fit something comes out for donation. I need a pantry built.
Just got to #1 and fail miserably at that lol left target today with a air purifier, Starbucks, thankfully no toys

Great goal!
What do you use for the dishwasher? I tried a DYI and then was really happy I found a box of store wash because the DIY wasn’t working🥴
Washing machine?
Trying to use less chemicals too
For the dishwasher I have been using the Seventh Generation powder, which I really like. The laundry is harder - I do use the Blueland laundry pellets, which are great! I have a 15% link if you ever want to try Blueland (a company I love!) www.blueland.com/tarynmaria
One less appliance if you use a rolling pin for your tortillas
I don’t buy cleaning supplies unless I need them.
I only have 7pr socks and underwear for one week. Then do laundry. Drawer not stuffed. Simple
Smart!
The reason I stockpile is fear it won’t be at the store when I do need it.
Eating in the restaurant will most likely save you money because the delivery partners often increase the prices to cover the convenience
Very true!
Just curious about what the couple things are that you use bleach on in your home?
Yes! So I use it on my shower curtain liner (I soak it in hot water and bit of bleach) and then occasionally I use it in my shower - we get mold in the corner and I put some bleach there. I also once in a while use it in my laundry with a load of white towels!
I use it for cleaning toilets. Also a tiny bit sometimes in kitchen sink after cooking meats, poultry etc.
I have a white porcelain kitchen sink, and I occasionally scrub it out with bleach and a couple shots of Dawn power wash
I think you have the other brass cat from the pair I have one of in the background.
Oh funny! It's actually a brass elephant - I think the angle makes it look cat like!
@@tarynmaria_ My cat has it's ass/tail in the air, face faces right. The other faces left.
The packaged vegetables bug me. They can just be sold loose by weight like they always have been.
I agree - I don't know why they do this!
Please read the book “Wheat Belly by DR William Davis
❤😊
Thank you!
Huh, you don't need a tortilla press for flour tortillas. Roll into balls, let them rest and use a rolling pin to get them into an amoeba shape to prove they're homemade. Besides, haven't heard anyone who likes their press. And it takes up way too much room.
Really? I have tried to make tortillas so many times and they are never thin enough :(
@@tarynmaria_ Hmm, bet you are using a ridiculous recipe that calls for baking powder. Baking powder is used for making flour rise - - - tortillas are flat bread. I don't know why so many recent recipes are calling for baking powder, smh.
2 Cups all purpose flour
1/2 C warm water
2 Tablespoons fat - any kind, butter margarine, meat fat, crisco
1/2 teaspoon salt
Mix with your hands.
@@bettyir4302 Thank you so much - I am totally going to try this recipe!!
