I love that area..brings back memories. I walked and hitchhiked the entire length of 303 several times. My favorite part was around the town of Peninsula.. lovely area. And nostalgic for me.
Wow, hike these trails all the time. Actually hiked a lot of these just these past few weeks trying to get my hiking legs back in shape. This is literally my back yard and I never thought of backpacking it, did not know there were places to camp. I have been eyeing some stealth spots as I could probably just walk from my house but the traffic is so high it would be difficult. This video was awesome, probably because I can see in my mind where you where headed next. Keep it up!
Those mystery pieces of concrete were road abutments for the road that went down into the sandstone quarry, which is that spot where you were standing. The official trail guide (remember those?) talks about it. I hike in CVNP a lot, because I live not too far from there. There is a LOT of stealth camping that goes on. Cleveland RTA used to have a bus that went down there, along Snowville Road, but they rerouted it because a lot of stealth backpackers would take it so they wouldn't have to worry about parking. So now you either have to get dropped off, take an Uber, or hike from where the bus goes, which is a couple miles. Not horrible, but there's a good chance a ranger would see you and know what you were up to. I think as long as you're good about LNT, and maybe don't have a fire, they wouldn't hassle you. I've asked for years for them to allow dispersed camping along the BT, but that's fallen on deaf ears.
Thanks for the info. I've actually never seen a trail guide for CVNP lol. I just pulled up AllTrails and created my own route past the attractions I wanted to see. I almost stealthed it but I got lucky and a site came available so I just did it the "right way" instead. They've been saying since 2019 there would be more backcountry sites for backpackers but I'll believe it when I see it. Allegedly they're currently planning three sites on the Buckeye Trail that runs through CVNP, but again I'll believe it when it happens. Thanks for watching!
CVNP has so many attractions! I used to day hike those separately quite a bit but I might have to try one big trip too. It's great because it's so accessible, but also not, when there's a ton of people.
There was that climb at 22 miles I really didn’t want to do lol. I’d like to do a 3 day out there. Maybe ledges to the inn at brandywine. Then brandywine to Ottawa point like I just did for day two. Idk I’ll look up other routes.
Looks like you lucked out going from Blue Hen to Jaite. Feel like no matter what time of year, or how dry it is I am always ankle deep in mud back there.
Some of the best hiking in Ohio. They just need more backpacking campsite options. Allegedly it’s in the works. If they get those up and running this will be the premiere backpacking spot in Ohio.
Buttermilk falls definitely looked pretty cool. What a great hike. I was wondering what your process is for planning these hikes? Also what's your preferred method of navigation?
I think you’re giving me too much credit assuming I have a process 😂 In general I start with how much time I have, two days, three days etc. Calculate mileage and drive time to have a schedule. I plan the route around parking, water and attractions. If it’s an area I’m familiar with I generally just use AllTrails which isn’t even really navigating, it’s just tracking my progress. If I do a trip in an area I’m unfamiliar with that is true wilderness I’ll take a GPS. Thanks for watching!
@@Bacon_N_Backpacking Been on all those trails dozens of times over the years, so cool to see them from a different perspective.... thank you. Hey, how'd ya like that climb from Jaite to Brecksville?
About as much as the one from Boston to Blue Hen lol. Honestly CVNP isn’t bad compared to what I’m used to, it’s very flat overall. I’d never be able to cover that much distance that quickly at say, Shawnee.
That's actually coming soon! I already have a video recorded for this week that I will release Sunday. I'll be backpacking Red River Gorge in Kentucky this weekend, which will make two videos. The video after that is going to be my summer 2022 gear dump!
Interesting. I didn't know there were any campsites at all in CVNP. Those concrete structures by Buttermilk Falls are the remains of an old road bridge.
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. That’s sort of what it looked like to me but I wasn’t sure. The concrete on the other side didn’t look like it lined up from bank to bank. The campsites aren’t technically in CVNP. It’s in Ottawa point which is Bedford Metro Park I believe. Thanks for watching!
There is currently no official campsites in CVNP. Heritage Farms offers camping near the park in Peninsula, OH April 22 to October 22. Ottawa Point in Cleveland Metroparks Brecksville Reservation is where he camped.
@@Bacon_N_Backpacking I never filter in CVNP just because all those creeks drain from residential areas, as far as I know, so I'd be worried they'd have runoff from yard chemicals and stuff like that. I could be way off base though.
@@scottplumer3668 The truth is you never know. The Grayl is the best filter on the market, it filters out things most others don't. It will filter heavy metals, pesticides and viruses. I generally try to avoid filtering from high risk areas but I've never heard anything specifically about CVNP. One thing I do know, it's still cleaner than tap water lol
And by the way the reason why there's no more camping down there is because of ( homemade wanderlust ) or Dixie on the trail is her other name Made a tribute video oh Grandma gatewood on the Cuyahoga valley trail and the buckeye trail After that no one been allowed to camp which is technically against the law Not to mention the history of Cuyahoga valley national Park is not a nice 1
The trick is that there is no camping in CVNP proper. CVNP borders some of the Cleveland metro parks. The campsite I stayed at was called Ottawa Point which is in the Bedford MetroPark I believe. It’s somewhat tricky to plan a route because you’d have to have three different maps for this route lol. I’m more than happy to share my AllTrails route if you wish. Also, I sent you my email, not sure if you saw it. YT comments are funky sometimes.
I'm glad I found this, today is a cold, gray November day and I needed to see this. Beautiful area, Thank's!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!
So glad to see CVNP getting some recognition! Blue Hen is one of my favorite falls, definitely super icy in winter on those steps. Nice video!
Yeah it was a great trip. If only CVNP would get it together and establish some backpacking campsites I’d go there way more often.
I love that area..brings back memories. I walked and hitchhiked the entire length of 303 several times. My favorite part was around the town of Peninsula.. lovely area. And nostalgic for me.
CVNP is a beautiful place to hike, wish they had more options for backpacking though. Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for sharing your adventure in CVNP. Looking forward to part 2.
Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!
Your dedication to the sport and this channel is amazing.
I’m just having fun lol but thank you!
Travis i loved this video. Beautiful waterfalls and was interesting to find out about the farm Have a safe trip and enjoy the beautiful nature.
It was a great trip, definitely going back in the fall
I need to check that out brother. Ty for the video!

Awesome video. I'll definitely have to check it out

I’ll probably end up doing some stealth trips there as well until CVNP gets their crap together and make some campsites available lol
TRAVIS forgot to tell you the video of the deer was awesome. How cool was that to get so close to it thanks for the picture. The deer was beautiful
Yeah first time I’ve ever seen anything like that

Feel free to come with, maybe again in the fall? Probably don’t wanna do the 28 miles in 24 hours though lol.
@@Bacon_N_Backpacking It's flat enough I wouldn't mind the distance, but maybe not in 24 hours exactly haha.

The concrete at Buttermilk was likely a dam/mill location.... they're all over the CVNP.

That was part of the lock system in 1776
But the part with the pipe was a small bridge 127 years ago
Good to know

The footings for an old train bridge is my guess

Yep most of the trip was on the buckeye trail
