My Mom used to make these quilts for her Grandchildren...She used to make tied quilts for our beds when we were kids...A real nostalgic video for me...Thank you😊
I have a huge blanket where i used my serger to 'flatlock' the squares and, yes, i backed it with a flannel sheet and tied it (no batting). I cut the remaining denim into circles and used them to make a 'mock cathedral window' with coloured quilt cotton centres.
This is exactly why I started sewing. I want to make a quilt for myself and my husband. I have a large hamper full of our old jeans. This is awesome. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏼🙏🏼😊
I like your process. I'm looking forward to part 2 and 3. I recently made a denim quilt out of old jeans and old flannel shirts for the back. Rag quilt style. It's shabby and scrappy and deliciously heavy and warm! No batting needed. It's almost yard sale season so I can get more cheap jeans and try your pattern!
Thank you this is a great tutorial and I will be making this for sure. Going now to look at Video #2. These will make great blankets for camping as well.
Great style and congratulations on inspiring AND teaching so well! Very well organized, efficient and productive. I'm impressed! Got it - the machine is a PFAFF Performance Icon . Serious adult entertainment but really, no different than having a Steinway B (800+ lbs.) in your home.
So great that fabric gets recycled!! I love denim quilts. About nesting the seams. It is even easier if you flip the top one up and he bottom one down, You don't need to worry about the bottom one turning and the seams nest even closer together. just something I noticed. 😀
Awesome! I'm here for it. This is exactly what I want to do. After the denim quilt, I would love ideas on how to make a denim jacket or coat for my dog.
I'm glad I decided to check out this tutorial. Denim quilt will be my 2nd quilt ever. Looks similar to the first one I'm working on. 5" squares on top of 10" squares.
You're great at explaining things. I'm a sewer but all I do are easy things and I feel stuck. I want to be able to sew bias on a curved edge, make clothes and harder techniques. My son slept at his friends house and said they had a jean blanket and the weight of it was magical. I may try this! Thanks
Hi Destiny. I made a smallish denim quilt years ago backed by a flannel sheet. The weight is great for snuggling under on the couch in front of the tv, but a very large one would be very very difficult to launder imo. Try making a smaller sized denim quilt to start with, would be my advice. Happy sewing!
Thank you! Denim quilts are the best. And they wash up great in a regular washing machine and are quite simple to tie and bind. You'll love the process. It's a good beginner sewing project. Another great project and video! So fun! Noticed a Jan Tip that I have not heard you mention with a piece of a yoga mat under your machine. I have old yoga mats for sanding wood with my carpentry projects. Can not believe I had not thought to put a piece of mat under my sewing machines, especially the serger as it wants to fly around. Thanks Jan!
Love this quilt! I love tied quilts since that's how my Grandma's quilts were all quilted. For beginners, offsetting the rows would make sewing the rows together easier, especially for beginning quilters.
My mom was the neighborhood seamstress and one day made a blue jean quilt-sadly it was stolen-I never forgot it so I finally gathered a bunch of my old jean! So your video was perfectly timed! Today i will start the cutting process..more to come-Thank you Jan😊
This video is so what I needed for quilt construction. Now that grandma is gone, I will be quilting on my own. I used to cut her pieces and thread her needles, with her taking over the construction tasks. I missed out on that so I will learn how to quilt in her honor.
I use my quilting ruler and rotary cutter to cut my jeans. I also put backing on and sew an X and when I sew rows together I then cut to make ragged edges quilts.
I love this series, it's amazing! Would you ever consider making a quilt-as-you-go tutorial? As someone who works with scraps, it's hard to find backing fabric large enough! Thank you so much for sharing, you really are so generous with your experience
Great videos! I have always wanted to make a denim quilt. I made a quilt from 12 x 12 squares by sewing machine when i was about 18 years old…which i still have but the stuffing is all bunched up from washing & I didn’t know to tie the squares at the time-just made it from an article in the”chatelaine” magazine! I’m going to be 65 this year & have been getting back to crafting/sewing the past few years. Your video inspired me to cut the denim squares from the jeans i had been deconstructing the past few months. Today I laid them all out on my living room floor & watched your video again for the next steps! I love the orange plaid flannel you chose for the backing. You mention using sheet sets; would you be willing to share the source? Thanks for all your inspiration! 🧡🩵
Have you looked into the cricut or silhouette cutting machines available out there for cutting quilting materials? I haven't tried my cricut maker 3 for this yet but I've seen a lot on youtube where it's super timesaving and it can cut precisely. And my machine can cut multiple types of things. Not just fabrics.
Thanks for the video series. I'm going to attempt to make my own denim quilt. Would you happen to know how many squares I would need for a king size bed?
I don't, but it would't be hard to figure out. Get the measurements for the blanket finished size, figure out how big you want your squares and multiply. You'll have to account for the seam allowance as well.
I've just about completed my quilt top for my very first ever quilt it's a denim square top just like the one in the video except my seams aren't exactly lined up at all. I've decided to leave it the way it is and just learn from my cutting errors and not repeat them my next quilt.. but my question is will there be any major issues or anything else that could go wrong after I sandwich and hand tie ? Other than the fact that the lines aren't up?
The only concern would be the finished size. I'd just make sure it is squared up. I am impressed with your first quilt. I think it will be cute with things not quite lined up. Let me know if you have any further questions. fibersandtwigs@gmail.com
Yes, you can use jeans that have stretch to them. I don't stabilize them. Just make sure when you are sewing them to a non-stretch block that you don't stretch it. I have no problems with them when it's all put together.
Sew half way and then hold top and bottom fabric ends together as you sew. It will either pull the top or bottom fabric a bit to”ease” in the fabric. Try that.
I have 22 pairs of jeans that my husband won't wear anymore because he has a peg tube and a catheter. He said they are uncomfortable to wear. So now I know exactly what to do with them.
Awesome😍😍 Iam in USA, and Iwant you to recommend best fabric supplier Iwant to start beed sheets business but I don't t know from where can i get the fabric. Thank you
hello very nice lady from time 11.18 to Time 12 .20 you can see the sewing machine electric foot pedal hanging down but not on the floor so I guess you used the start stop button being used in this video?but please kindly film how to operate the sewing machine electric foot pedal being used by foot to sew please kindly reply back OK?thank you very much 😊

The only downside is that denim is heavy. I make lots of denim blankets for an organization that sends them to our troops overseas.
Wonderful!

I'm a yoga instructor and have ample mats around. It's quite amazing what you can do with a yoga mat. You are quite observant to catch that detail. :)

Yaay❤! Just what I was looking for. I am a tailor and I have access to literally all the denim scraps you’d need 👍👏
Wonderful.
I love your Jean quilt.

Wonderful! It's really a lost art that I love hearing of people still learning how or continuing the legacy!
I would love this for a car quilt for our Inland Northwest car drive picnics!
That would be wonderful. The next video in the series will be going up Sunday morning. Watch for it.
So glad I came across your video, really enjoyed watching,

Noreen, did you use any batting of some kind. I worry it will get to heavy. I am also using fatigues for alternating block
@@karenjohnson6723 I did not use batting for Jean quilts. Two layers of Jean fabric is heavy enough.

Jan this quilt is going to be wonderful!! 🐞💕
thanks, watch for the binding tutorial to see how it turns out

Sorry i see you mention in video 2 that you are using flannel from fabric store for this particular quilt. 😊
You are so welcome
👍
A see through template would be helpful. Maybe out of those plastic cutting boards or vinyl 😉
Great suggestion.
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
Thanks!

Denim quilts are great for taking to a concert, the beach, or a picnic. They are tough enough to throw on the ground, and they wash up well.
I agree

So many jeans these days have some stretch to them, are they usable?
Yes. Just make sure when you are sewing the blocks together that you don't stretch the fabric. I use them all the time.
Do you use jeans that have stretch to them? If so, do you stabilize them first?
Yes, you can use jeans that have stretch to them. I don't stabilize them. Just make sure when you are sewing them to a non-stretch block that you don't stretch it. I have no problems with them when it's all put together.
How do I avoid stretch in the top layer when I sew two strips together? My seams aren’t lining up because of it.

@@JanHowell thank you very much for these ideas.
Most of my quilts have stretch....is it ok to make a quilt with it?
Do you mean that most of your jeans have stretch? Yes you can.
Awesome😍😍 Iam in USA, and Iwant you to recommend best fabric supplier Iwant to start beed sheets business but I don't t know from where can i get the fabric. Thank you
I don't know much about fabric suppliers, sorry.
Is your template exactly 8X8 or did you add a bit for a seam?
It’s 8x8
What's the link on how to take jeans apart?
ruclips.net/video/I1cKXoVaUJY/видео.htmlsi=p1i5ppQNIPoKWfzA
Is this a janome machine?
No, it's a Babylock Verve
It is s much faster and easier to use a rotary cutter and ruler.
Yes, especially if you have a BIG pair of jeans. Bigger blocks can be a little tricky if you can't cut lined up squares. Thanks for sharing
