great tips you have, one additional tip regarding the garden-/quilting gloves. If you cut away the tips of the thumb and the index finger you do not need to get out of your gloved when you need the re-thread your needle or something similar :)
Thankyou I been wanting to make a denim quilt for a long time .Your tips will stop me from getting frustrated and giving up on a denim quilt thanks again.
So glad to hear it Sheila! I have a full tutorial on how to sew a Jean quilt. It will help walk you through each step ruclips.net/video/5HeradTWFYQ/видео.html happy sewing!
It help to have a heavy duty sewing machine I pick my denim at thrift shop in the craft jeans that mean they have something wrong with them but still great for sewing
When I make a denim or military uniform quilt I embroider (e.g name, service dates, year made) on a pocket and sew it on the back of the quilt. I always use 3/8 inch seams. I iron the seams open and glue the opened seams down with washable glue as it will wash out later. I mostly make 6 fi x 8 ft flags. I glue the stars in place also before I sew them down with invisible thread!! Great video by the way!!
Thank you, you have really inspired me, your so cheerful, passionate, informative and just so bubbly! I am going to start collecting denim to make my very first quilt.
I was just at a yard sale that was across the street from my house and picked up 15 pairs of Levi’s for $5.00! You know I jumped on that dealL. I have so much denim and, yes, I keep every part of my jeans. Like you said, there are tons of little projects I can use them for.
I have a dozen pairs of jeans prepped to begin a crazy quilt style twin-size bedspread but am boning up on tips to gather courage to start cutting random pieces. I especially appreciate your tip on using stabilizer for the super-stretchy pieces. Also the reminder to use second-string scissors. Now I'm eager to see what you do with those random scraps!
Thank you Tamara! I have been watching many quilt tutorials on UTube and hands down - yours is the BEST! I learned so much just from this one video. 🤟Great job - you're a natural😄
I cut the outer seams off the jeans I’m working with. I started braiding them and sewing with carpet thread to make a throw rug. No pictures because it’s only in the second round before I went on to another project. I admit I am a “procraftinator”.
I cut my jeans along all the seams. If I free motion quilt over a denim seam, I will definitely break a needle. Great video though. I keep all my zippers too for throw pillows, coin pouches, and stuffed animals.
Hi musicleeinclined. I have made a quilt using my husbands khakis and his flannel pjs alternating. I used cotton batting and flannel backing. The blanket was much heavier than I expected.
I wasn't sure about batting for the khakis. Jeans definitely wouldn't need it. A flannel backing sounds nice. Mine will be all khakis on the top. My husband's sleep pants seem to last him long than the khakis.
Wonderful! I am so glad I could help out! It looks like Christina Marie has some helpful advice for you too. Glad we can gather together to create our master pieces! Depending on how thick the kakis are and what the purpose of the quilt will be you could add batting if you wanted to, or a thicker flannel layer. Happy Sewing!!!
Wonderful tutorial. I am a jewelry designer who just started sewing quilting with recycled denim and your tips are terrific! I want to make a quilted rug of denim. What would you recommend to back it with. Heavy canvas? Faux suede? Thx
Welcome Alisa! And thanks for subscribing! Jean quilts are so comfy, Enjoy sewing!! I am hoping to have a second tutorial up showing how I actually made the quilt. Fingers crossed it will be up within a week.
Thanks for your tips! I have completed several denim quilts and used the back pockets to make advent calendar, however I don’t know how to use the front pockets. Do you have any suggestions?
You're welcome Rochelle! I have yet to figure out a way to use the front pockets. I use the seams as ties and loops for smaller projects like this one here: ruclips.net/video/71zabxiypF8/видео.html and I have some fun smaller Christmas ornament tutorials (I will post in November) that use jean scraps. And I LOVE your idea to use the back pockets for an advent calendar! But those front pockets and the waist band are just sitting in my stash waiting for a good idea lol!
I am so glad I found your channel!! I am making one for my mom! She wants more of a weighted blanket….I think I will use a thicker backing….any other suggestions??
Hi Katherine, welcome! I agree, If you are looking for something with more weight then a nice thick backing would work or a layer of batting between the top and back will also be helpful. I have a tutorial on how I made my jean quilt: ruclips.net/video/5HeradTWFYQ/видео.html But I would not recommend adding the fabric squares in the mix as they are much thinner and will take away from the weighted feel. Happy Sewing!
For sure!!! But just a warning it just won’t rag the same as flannel. I would add a layer of flannel with the denim to give it a nice ragged look. Hope that helps Maria!
When using a 3-1/2” binding, do you still use a 1/4” seam when sewing it to the quilt? Do you leave extra batting when squaring up so the binding includes batting inside the binding when you turn it to sew it?
You're so welcome Linda! I have a fun denim ornament tutorial that just came out if you are interested in playing with some scraps: ruclips.net/video/DyCFQa1GMQo/видео.html
Hi Tamara. First time watching and definitely hit the “like and Subscribe”. Great tips, thank you! I have been cutting and saving Jean squares for a bit and I love the idea of mixing cotton fabrics in. I love both quilts you had in the background. 😁
Welcome Jill, and thank you so much!! I am so glad this video could be of some help, I have been hanging on to a lot of jean fabric too, so I will be playing around with a lot of fun ways to use up our scraps. This friday I actually have a tutorial that will go up on how to sew a waterproof picnic blanket with ties that uses old jeans. I am so excited to share it. I hope you like it! Happy Sewing!
@@TamarasJoyDIY That sounds great! I love both Jean quilts you had in the background but really loved the quilt opposite of what you showed your tutorial on. Looking forward to your picnic blanket.
Hi Gail! They are called timestamps. If you look in the description of the video I typed them out with 00:00 as the start time. RUclips does the rest :)
@@TamarasJoyDIY for an outdoor Jean quilt would you recommend the fabric shower curtain as backing or as an inside layer. I want to make a picnic denim quilt but also not wanting to make it extra heavy to carry. Batting/backing recommendations will be really appreciated
So sorry! I haven’t made that video yet. But I have used those scraps in a lot of my projects listed in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLppxTOkh07MffCAANcMmgmXCwJr1h4h6K and when I make that tutorial I will post it to this playlist as well. Happy sewing 🧵 💜
You can get your scissors sharpened, it doesnt cost much. Locally, my quilt shop has a guy that comes by to pick up scissors, even pinking shears, for sharpening, as well as machine repairs.
I like to turn my blocks so the grains face all sorts of ways. It looks so nice. If you are concerned about the jeans stretching you could always put interfacing behind the stretchy blocks. But I wouldn’t worry to much about it. Happy sewing!
I think you may need to bring it in for repair. The threader should be easy to use on a baby lock. I would do a short video but I have since broken my babylock!!!!😳
I have washed plastic shower curtain liners when they got a little moldy. They do fine on a gentle wash, but putting them in the dryer is dicey. If you dry them on low for only a few minutes , along with towels, then take them out right away, they usually survive and come out clean. But you have to really watch them or they they shrink up, melt, or fall apart. So if you put a plastic liner in your jean quilt, I would only dry the quilt a little bit before I took it out of the dryer. Then I would let the quilt finish air drying outside on a clothesline.
I just came from local Trift store. $50.00..all the clothes you can put in buggy. I loaded up with men's suit coats and all the Blue jeans in the store.! I got 5 suits and 42 pairs of jeans! SCORE!
Yes Sharon! keep allllll the fabrics lol. I will admit I too threw out my sons kaki pants as they had holes in them before cluing into using them this way as well.

Hi musicleeinclined. I have made a quilt using my husbands khakis and his flannel pjs alternating. I used cotton batting and flannel backing. The blanket was much heavier than I expected.

Does it not matter how you match up squares before seeing. In terms of grains varying
I like to turn my blocks so the grains face all sorts of ways. It looks so nice. If you are concerned about the jeans stretching you could always put interfacing behind the stretchy blocks. But I wouldn’t worry to much about it. Happy sewing!
It would have been nice for you to mention the stitch length you are referring to, please
I scrolled down all these comments to hopefully find that answer, Mickey. Oye!
I lengthen it to just 3mm. Not much longer but enough to help my machine along.
I see you have a babyloc can you go over using the threader I either broke mine or it is operator error.
I think you may need to bring it in for repair. The threader should be easy to use on a baby lock. I would do a short video but I have since broken my babylock!!!!😳
How does the shower curtain play in the wash and the dryer?
Hi Mickey, as long as you use a washable shower curtain it works great. Don't use a plastic shower curtain.
I have washed plastic shower curtain liners when they got a little moldy. They do fine on a gentle wash, but putting them in the dryer is dicey. If you dry them on low for only a few minutes , along with towels, then take them out right away, they usually survive and come out clean.
