Hi Evan, superb instructional video. Looking forward to the next one. It's probably already in the queue but I will be very interested on a detailed explanation on how to pop/ollie strapless. I have been trying lately and most of the time I barely get to peel off the water. Again thanks and keep on with the videos!
Hey great vid, my other question is how to stay riding when hopping over big non breaking waves out the back, like one of my main issues is that i can’t seem to edge upwind while also going over the waves because every time i pass one I tumble
Hey Sarah, yes this can be hard especially in side or side off wind as going over the wave can create more line tension especially when edging and therefore lift pulling you off the board. Try to ride very slow and follow the wave up with the kite as you ride up it so your kite is high at the peak and then dive it again as you drop over the back. Depending on the wind direction relative to the wave you may need to do a but of a downwind swerve as you ride over it to keep from getting lifted off your board. Keeping the kite generally high and going slow is key.
Video topic idea, leash or no leash, and if so when falling (or getting unavoidably barrel rolled by a wave) is there a good way to fall to not tension the leash line and have it whipsaw hit you?
Great topic idea for sure, since it is so highly debated in kiting. For me leash vs no leash is condition dependent. I'm planning on doing a video on this topic on the future for sure!
Yes, depending on the conditions. Often in offshore winds if your board will washes in (in being upwind upwind, especially into rocks/reef it can be almost necessary). In side/side on wind I try to avoid using a leash as it is much more dangerous with the bounce back of the board. Offshore winds you still need to be very carful not to get pulled by the kite too hard to have the board whip back at you but generally your kite will pull you out and your board will be behind you so it will not get washed into you from a wave while in onshore wind your board will end up outside of you and then a wave can easily push it into you. It's worth practicing in flat water to get used to it and using a helmet as it can lead to a bad injury. I've personally had some close calls due to a leash...
Thanks for vids! just moved to location with waves similar to those in your vids. came from flat water location. ok with TT in waves but now looking to swap to directional ( bought a Quest TT) . it has option for straps. would you suggest trying with straps first? also almost lost TT the other day wiping out in surf out back (lifeguards picked up 10kms away) so whats the verdict on using an 8ft ankle leash? Thanks
Another epic one brother. So good...... Thank you!
Thanks Damo!
Great video Evan. Picking a path is huge especially when it get's big.
Agree, timing is key for sure!
it's all fun and games while your riding on side shore :D shit is getting real once you are on 2m waves with complete on shore 🌊
Awesome tutoring! Thanks, Evan!

Hi Evan. Do you ever use or recommend using a leash ever wave riding?
Yes, depending on the conditions. Often in offshore winds if your board will washes in (in being upwind upwind, especially into rocks/reef it can be almost necessary). Cool, many thanks for your reply. I’m just learning to ride strapless here in east coast scotland. Where are you based in USA?
