"Pro" tip: go to a crafts store or one that sells art supplies and buy a color wheel. It has instructions on it on how to use it. It was extremely helpful to me in my graphics design classes. Also there a ton of videos on YT that explain color theory. Once you understand how certain colors work together (or not), you should be able to decide for yourselves which colors would look good for the army you're putting together. Just remember: there's no right or wrong with this. It's a matter of what color "glam" you want your guys to rock. I played Khorne Chaos demons/SMs back in the day and I used reds and blacks with them. My Nids I used varying shades of purple and pink and I think I painted up one of my larger models black and dark purple cuz I thought it would be more intimidating to look at by my opponent. ;) There's lots you can do. Don't feel locked into one scheme or the other. Using a photo editor app will let you see how things will look without worrying you'll ruin your model trying things out. I wish I had access to this tip when I was painting and collecting my armies. It would have saved me the headache of not liking how I painted one figure and having to remove all the unwanted paint.

This was a fun and helpful episode! Like others have said, very good for a last minute throw-together, and both a useful resource and a compilation of other resources. On the subject of hobbying, maybe you could do an episode on hobby etiquette at some point, with respect to tournaments? As an example, as a new Guard player, I'm not sure how ideas about altering the looks of canonical characters like Ursula Creed or Lord Solar Leontus would be received. I know that it varies by player or by tournament, but a general vibe check for the community as a whole would be helpful. With Ursula, I would just be tempted to change her color scheme to match mine, but with Leontus, I am considering replacing his goofy helmet with an officer's cap, and having him be Lord Commander on Horse, rather than specifically Leontus.
I came into this episode expecting pleasant background noise, I was pleasnatly surprised at how interesting I found the discussion. In GIMP something similar to this with less steps 1. Select the brush tool 2. Set the brush's mode to "Burn" and voilà, you can recolour the model with the brush as is. You can do the whole layer thing, but it's more complicated.
If I may, Adobe Lightroom would be far more useful for this case 😉 Instead of masking parts like the cape, lightroom would let you not only select a color, but also its light intensity and it's saturation.
