I'm a die-hard Frusciante fan, but One Hot Minute is a criminally underrated album in their discography
Walkabout was another great bass line from that album that could have easily been on the list.
Aeroplane, Deep Kick, Transcending, coffee shop, are four awesome bass Lines from the album
@@rick.05 and Shallow be thy Name
When John isn't there, Flea gets to be the star. One reason I loved their last album, it seemed Josh figured out where he fit in, making texture and letting Flea show off
I would wholeheartedly agree with that comment! Not so much with Charles performance of Coffee shop though.....he got about 80% of it right, most of the notes were right on but his strikes were off enough to make it sound very different! I usually love his vids but having become a bassist because Flea inspired me to pick one up almost 30 years ago, I've learned virtually EVERYTHING he's done and I'm kind of a stickler when it comes to Flea!!!! If you're gonna play his s**t, I like to do it EXACTLY the way he did cause its perfect!!!!! Slap on now!

That's the way to do sponsorship. Low price product that's ultra relevant to the channel and brings people on board.
Show some other essentials next and I just might get playing! I don't even know what plug to plug into what to get sound :-)
Glad you enjoyed it! Haha well start by plugging your bass into an amp 😂
@@CharlesBerthoud Hey Charles can you say OMG like davie does in the end of his videos?
@@AUBCodeII nah, gotta stay original Charles... 💪🏻 would be boring if all RUclipsrs were the same
@@groggers I'm asking him to do it just once, as a reference to davie. Not to incorporate it in his catchphrases.
ÁUß Code II BS
Damn I can't believe how low-price that bass is - sounds awesome!
yeah you get some quality basses at super low prices but I wonder how much setting up was required and I am also curious to the effects used on the video
It's a pretty great deal!
This review (ruclips.net/video/kE_8L4Sa8a0/видео.html) seems to like it, he goes over details like fretwork, neck finish, weighting (not neck heavy) tuners etc, and other reviews seem to conclude that it is built better than more "expensive" basses. Other reviews seem to conclude with the same, so if the factory don't start messing with production it seems like a solid buy.
It needed minimal setup from the factory, with action and intonation set pretty well from the start.
Since I can't find a distributor in Norway, I'd love some feedback from anyone who's tried a Harley Benton HBZ-2004, Chateau PJ01 or Gear4Music Chicago as I'm looking for a cheapo thing to complement the cheapish Tanglewood acoustic I've got.
When first watching I was thinking along the lines of "man that bass sounds a little rough for the boutique fare he usually plays" but then it came around to the sponsorship and price and I couldn't help but want one haha
I’ve often wondered how much was Charles and how much was the awesome basses he owns? But now, I see that it’s all Charles! If he can finger style on such an affordable bass, then it’s all in the fingers. I’m sure it’s a fine bass, but Charles makes it look so easy.
There is not a bass-line ever composed (by anybody) - that this guy couldn't play, or play better. ASTONISHING talent.
I feel like he didn't get the tone and feel in the Primus video, especially Jerry and Tommy. But that doesn't mean much, Charles is still an amazing bassist, I just don't think he reached Les Claypool's level in the Primus video.
I bought a Yamaha bass myself 1 month or so ago and has started learning :) First 2 weeks I was thinking wow this is hard, I will never learn to do anything like in this video ... But after 2 weeks I started to get better fast and now I think I will even be able to slap with time and practice. I love playing bass and it is the best buy I have ever done :) I do not care how good or bad I am at playing, I just enjoy playing and enjoy learning doing new stuff.
More power to you! That is a great attitude. Enjoy it instead of making it a stress like so many people do.
just don't sell your first bass, you will regret it
Hey, I know this is a late reply... but I've been through the same. I *used* to be a Davie504 fan, and he inspired me to start playing bass. I already knew 3 years of guitar, so it gave me a good start, but I did chords and I used a pic, which is the opposite of what I do today. 2 months in bass and I could play Can't Stop and Dark Necessities. A couple months later, I tried learning a bass line that was super hard for me at the time, Hysteria by Muse. I learned the song in 3 hours, and that is when I realized practice makes perfect. Today, 1 and a half years later, I can play almost all the FLEA solos and I'm already started on Primus, Larry Graham and Marcus Miller. I also suggest joining a bass community, it helped me a LOT. I also recommend Scott Devine from SBL on youtube, he's an amazing teacher and bass player. I hope I helped a little. If you need a buddy to jam with, contact me. (I have no bass buddies lol)
One of the Kings of Slap, and Bass in general for sure! I think you really did his basslines justice here indeed, massive props to you!
Thanks! Yes, Flea's stuff is so funky.
@@CharlesBerthoud He truly is!

I don't think I've heard a FEW of these before and my GOODNESS does it highlight how much fun and how IMPORTANT Flea and Frusciante were to making RHCP TRULY memorable because my WORD are those basslines tight, fun and energetic! Thanks for consistently great content Charles! :D
True! And Chad Smith was tight on the drums too!
A lot of these were before Frusciante was in the band RIP Hillel Slovak
@@flucazade Ya see? The more you know! I was more making a commentary to my favorite pieces of RHCP, but thank you for informing me :D
@@CharlesBerthoud TRUTH. I think he's underappreciated, but very much plays to the material/players around him and there is something to be said to that. To me, very much like Lars (in playing to the material, I think Chad is a VASTLY superior drummer.)
@@morganfarlie Yes Chad definitely plays to the song! His parts are often surprisingly intricate when you focus on them. Surprising because, they fit so well with the other instruments, you don't notice how intricate they are. They don't stick out like a sore thumb.
My goodness Charlie, you play with such aplomb and finesse. I cannot fathom the requisite, drive and application. To achieve this skill level.
Like most people learning bass when I was a kid flea was one of my biggest inspiration. I even played some of his grooves in my auditions to get into music school to study bass years ago. Watching him play live is a sight to behold.
I'm simple person, I see something related to rhcp I like immediately
you are not simple, you added a lot of extra words. It's: "I'm a simple person, I see RHCP I like" no need to add related or inmediatly. You ruin it all in a few words. =P
So effortless.... when I‘m trying to play these songs I look like a maniac
Although to be fair so does Flea...
@@Jehoshaphat1 Lmao nice

Outstanding Charles! This is the true bass content people absolutely love!! Part 2 would be amazing
Great video man. Thank you!
Love the hustle. Really didn’t even know this was an advertisement until the end. Great skill and salesmanship.
Damn, you are smart, if you play someone who is such a "standard" inspiration for people to start playing bass, with a beginner's cheap bass, that's one way to sell the product, if I was just starting to play bass and watched this video would definetively had bought this jb
Me too. My first bass was a Glarry, but a precision. I wish I would have gotten this one instead. It is cheaper.
But that's alright. I have moved on to bigger and better now
The solo from Goodbye Angels is one of my favorite flea solos. The solo, listened to in context with the track and the rest of the band for the outro, comes crashing in like a wave!
awesome vid, good list!
Seriously each time the solo of aeroplane is missed and it's a great one, and there is another solo in coffee shop that is pretty cool too
Nice choice lot of old school crazy stuff
I played airplane including the solo as part of my audition into a music school to study bass, such a classic groove!
@Me, Also Me ye man I got in, studied bass for a couple years and graduated years ago. It was just one of the songs I played as well as being tested on my overall skills.
Love this video! Flea is my Bass Hero. My favourite. You are so great man.. I love so much your solo when you start to speak about the bass (3.14) I want this part with out your voice to listen all day. Congrats from Italy!❤️
Daaaammmnn, this was mad !! I'm happy the sponsorship is here! Something pretty much relevant to every new bassist :) Keep Grinding!
Awesome stuff man
Soul to Squeeze has always been my favorite. It's laid back, yeah, but beautiful and melodic.
This was such a good ad that it made me consider buying this bass even though I'm a guitarist
ive been waiting for this, perfection

So pumped that you are getting channel sponsors! You rock dude!!
So glad you had coffee shop in the top spot. One of my favorite bass solos on an album.
fleas bass playing is just amazing lol, it compliments the guitar, vocals and drums really well.
Man that $79 bass you were talking about at the end of the video DID sound good. Now that's a great recommendation and sponsorship, thanks Charles!
Charles, you and your bass are the reason that why we are still alive during this quarantine.
Your vids are awwwwwesome.
Keep making vids🖤👌👌
This man underrated as hell.
I love flea
Flea and a tutorial I found with him of how to play bass was the main contributor to me buying a bass guitar 1 month ago and start learning :) I was thinking I would never ever be able to play like Flea but after 2 weeks I started to think it is not that hard as it seems :)

Great video man
Killed it Charles !! Excellent!!!
I’m WAY late to this party but I HIGHLY recommend putting “Hard To Concentrate” on the next video if you make one. Beautiful backstory, beautiful song and in my opinion the most intimate melodic bass line Flea has ever written. He has said the style for the song was inspired by Frusciante’s melodic guitar style. Such an underrated and meaningful piece of music.
FINALLY SOMEONE PUT COFFE SHOP IN ONE OF THEIR LISTS, love that song
Really nice work!!
P.s. Right On Time on the next video!
That is simply awesome! I love the great 'reveal' at the end where you tell us how affordable this bass is! I'm new to bass and what this goes to show is that there are no excuses, I can't keep blaming the guitar for not being 'as good' as those I follow on RUclips (I have a Sterling by Musicman). I just need to keep on practicing and you are the inspiration I need!
As I'm sure that the bass does sound great, what I'm even more certain about is that you could make any bass sound good!
I've always seen being able to play Flea's songs as achieving the highest level of bass playing possible, like a PhD in bass
thanks for the great demonstration, ill be buying this bass
Thanks charles for Bass reccommendation for beginners! Finally some advice from the pro 🥰🥰
Almost every flea bass line is great
I'm probably going to listen to RHCP now I didn't realize how good these basslines are. Also I own a Glarry and I love it, I can't play much or sound nearly as good as you but I'm still new to bass. If I ever get another bass it will be a Hofner since I'm a Beatles fan, if I wasn't I wouldn't bother though cause the Glarry is great.
I love you DAVIE!! oh wait...wrong channel - killer vid man! Flea was such an inspiration growing up in the 90s. Killer bass, killer price! very nice man!
LOVE THESE KINDA VIDEOS
In your intro you could say:" What's up tappers!"
I knew Flea was really badass, but you just opened my ears to how little I knew him for... he is a legend! ..you did awesome too!

Thanks CB, I strongly believe that Gen Z'ers are taking musical instrument talents to the next level and it's great! Can't wait to see less singers/rappers/dancers and more bands again. Great price on a great sounding instrument - thanks for the red hot demo!

Awesome! I haven't played in 30yrs. I got a Glarry P-bass after seeing and hearing Charles and Davie504 playing them. The perfect starter bass for starting over.
I was waiting for a Flea video haha!
First off, at that price, I MUST get one of those basses. It sounds really great tone wise.
Ok, Charles, as you know this old musician thinks you are the next Victor Wooten or Paco, so there's not much advice I could give you that would make you a better player.
But there is one thing.that will add tremendously to your overall musicianship.
Respond here, so I know you read this, and I will share that insight, right afterwards (so don't forget to check back. RUclips's notification system kinda sucks)
I promise one day you will thank me profoundly for emphasizing this to you. But I don't want your thanks. I jst want you to achieve the true greatness you deserve. - Jstn
If you learn The Mars Volta's "day of the baphomets" intro, I will think you're the best player ever. I challenge you!
Obviously you should! I can't wait to hear it!
I love that you get the big “phat” dead note thumb sound that makes flea’s slapping so special

This video is perfect for learning slap. Thanks man!
Glarry, that's some of the best press you could get for your instrument. Great video, love Flea.
Very good player man! Keep going!!!
Great vid flea the 🐐
What I like about Charles he is always give you more than advertised. That’s was a top 13 bass line 😎

Your videos are superb, good sir.
I used to play bass back in the day, old school punk/metal cover band. That bass and the price makes me want to get back into it. $80 is a great price! Thanks and THIS is the way to do sponsorship.
Epico. Whatever effects you used for coffee shop were super funky
So Nice!
I even watched the ad. Nicely done!
Charlie you’re killing it!
You make it groove so much
Thanks for the Flea tribute; I've been following these guys since 1984, when they started.
Fleas attitude is insane but his playing is so fluid and precise
Good job Charles
Dude excellent job with the sponsor! It was super unobtrusive. They were smart to let you represent their brand. Good stuff.
