Guys, IMO the lubrication part of this video cannot be overstated. Since James put up the original video about how to lubricate an AR-15 a few years ago, I've used this method with grease on the bearing parts instead of soaking the whole BCG with break free as I was taught in the Army. At the time I was skeptical, but figured that a guy who has had hundreds of thousands of rounds, perhaps millions fired during classes down through the years probably knew as well as anyone what works and what doesn't so I decided to give it a try. Long story short, my students in patrol rifle classes have experienced so many less malfunctions during training since we all started using this method at my department. An added benefit is that cleaning is easier since there isn't oil all over everything, collecting all kinds of gunk. The grease stays where it is needed for the most part and when we fire around 750 rounds per rifle in class, there has been no need for people to carry around a bottle of break free to slather on the BCG after malfunctions start to happen due to the oil burning off at high temperatures. Give it a try, IT JUST WORKS!
Test an Anderson manufactured Ar-15 with the RF85 infusion system. Calcium is under high pressure and infused into the metal. It is all the way through the metal as the calcium molecules are smaller than the aluminum molecules. Under high heat and pressure the calcium lines up end to end and becomes slicker so less friction, which allows the rifle to run faster. Slicker also means less heat build up along with less wear. Since no oils, it also means less build-up of carbons and blowback junk. Clean up with soap and water will do the jobs, for the most part. Be sure to fully dry the rifle because calcium will not stop rust. Be smart. Note I did not say that RF85 prevents all build up of carbon and junk. Fact is even the owner said you can still lube the rifle though I have not seen the science behind that option. I have run least 5000 rounds so far, to the best I can calculate and it still runs great. Check the many youtube videos for more information or don't. It will not make a crap one way or the other, for me. Peace and love regardless to you all.
I always seem to learn something from your videos...”if you can lift up on the extractor, the spring needs be replaced.” Good one! It was worth a half hour just to hear that!
To the shooters that are cleaning a dirty rifle for the first few times, every part of this video is spot on. Regarding those little glass reinforced nylon picks, use em to break up chunky shit in the corners, and then wrap a rag around the tip after spraying it again, and they get in all the spots you can't get a round brush into. Works great.
"In the South nothing really works for anti fog..." Spoken like a true Tennessean, especially after the rain we've had lately. Good cleaning tips, thanks.
I always grease the spring simply for noise reduction. that was the loudest part of my rifle when I bought it and it’s damn near silent now. but I agree it isn’t necessary, just a plus.
I usually put oil on the entire outside of my bolt carrier, let it sit and permeate as much as desired. Then, wipe off excess but leave it shiny and slippery. Then put a dab on the 4 sliding points for actually usage. The wiped off oil is just to keep from oxidation during storage.
Thanks. I just bought my 1at AR-15 and it's not ready for a cleaning yet but I was feeling like I should do some research on cleaning and maintenance and then you dropped this video as if you were reading my mind. Next up for me is a part by part full disassembly and reassembly so that I know how everything functions and so that I can build my next AR from the ground up.
I do not recommend full disassembly unless you are taking an Armorer's class. Trying to do it from RUclips videos is a good way to fuck it up. It is EASY to build a gun that LOOKS right but notice how they never take them and show you the first rounds fired. That is because most do not work.
@@TacticalResponseCrew thanks for the advice but I disassemble and reassemble everything. Just because it's my 1st AR doesn't mean I'm new to guns or to taking apart mechanical devices. Besides I got a friend that builds them and if I get hung up he's a call away.
@@TacticalResponseCrew no I get it. I would certainly give the same advice to anybody else. But then many people aren't mechanically inclined and anybody else usually doesn't take apart a hammer drill or a laptop or a gun or a tractor, etc. just to see how it does what it does.
I watched your video almost 10 years ago on AR lubrication. The tub of wheel bearing grease. I started lubing my ARs that way and have never had a problem. Still have the same tub of grease.
Is it weird I not only know, but follow all these steps nearly EXACTLY as he lines it out, yet I get full enjoyment out of just watching? lol I learned from my Best Friend and Father, both of whom were in the military. I had a friend who oiled his entire BCG, I was like "dude, for real?" lol then I showed him and demonstrated how it "slid" on the rails... he was like "wow, that will save me SO much money!" lol
Really appreciate your approach and no BS attitude. Too bad youtube has this video stuffed under all kinds of trash. Most of the other videos on youtube are just talking heads man, thanks.
I tend to over lubricate my gun since combustion creates h20 and since my background of guns was waterfowl hunting. I've seen guns rust in the inside and it just no fun
James Yeager is missed so much. Whether a person liked his personality or not, he genuinely cared, had knowledge, and above all he had what Dave Ramsey called "the heart of a teacher."
I dig it, straight forward and to the point. Most important thing is watching it once and now i can get it done, just like that! Yeager could teach a gun how to take itself apart😆😂Damn he is greatly missed. Rock on.
The reason gun oil is so expensive is the word “gun”. Lol. That said…I use forward control designs “snake oil”. It’s a yellow colored grease with the consistency of mayonnaise. Seems to be good so far. I tested out the outside of bolt carrier and used charging handle to cycle several times…. Then let the rifle sit in a safe for a few weeks and when opening to inspect…the snake oil holds its consistency and stays where you put it, doesn’t melt under normal temps and leak anywhere gravity pulls it like an oil. Grease stays put and in places such as bolt interface with carrier makes for warm fuzzies.
I used G96 Syn CLP for shot ton of years . I got tired of the oil migrating through the gun while in the safe . I switched to Battleborn Grease about 1.5 years ago . I'll never go back to CLP for lubrication of critical parts. G96 Gun Treatment Spray , Breakthrough Mil Gradr Solvent and Breakthrough Battleborn Grease is all I ever use anymore . I'm sure that Battleborn Grease will last an extremely long time . I've used it 30 or 40 times now and I've barely made a dent . That grease should last me t plus years for sure and I wouldn't be surprised if it lasted 10 plus years..
Greetings Sir, about storing a spare bolt in the pistol grip. How is the bolt supposed to be stored? In a zip lock bag? Also does one need to lube up the entire bolt before storing to prevent rust? If so, what should be used as lube? Is the breakthrough grease fine? Thanks in advance!
The Anti-Fog is good but not great? I have yet to find a product that will prevent total fogging up of my lenses. If you do please shine some light on the subject. I am always worried about messing up the coating applied to scopes, red dots, and magnifiers.
Dang, I thought I understood how to clean the AR15 but that darn two sized brush had me confused. Thank You. Guess I will no longer try to stuff the whole thing into the barrel.
Thanks for a great cleaning vid and for not treating me like I'm 5 years old, I don't mind hearing shit and fuck in a video unlike a lot of other channels.
You told us in the past that there was no reason to use fancy lube. "Bearing grease is all you need" you said. What's changed other than a new sponsor ?
That was over 10 years ago, I am allowed to change my mind with new info. If this existed then I would have told you to use it. I never said to stop using grease though. I use Breakthrough now because it works hotter and colder than grease and the solvents do not stink.
@@TacticalResponseCrew Of course you're allowed to change your mind. I just always took you for the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of guy. No hate intended.

Hey James you can use an old 10cc medical syringe fill it with your grease and it makes it easier to apply to the rails. Thanks for the pin trick!
Love the car wash part! The rest was great too. I need to go dirty my gun so I can clean it!
James washing his AR at the car wash...definitely hard core! Proves to me I'm wasting time trying to do surgery lol.

How often does the copper remover solvent be used every couple of 100s, 1000s, 5000s rounds?
There are too many variables for me to put a number on it.
