  • This is the most horrifying sculpture I've ever made. Its puts "Thing" to shame. This came from witnessing the plague of Mormon crickets. They covered the western states from Wyoming to Nevada.
    The alginate that worked the best is here: amzn.to/3tlNMJw

    Thats as ugly as it is incredible. It's as unnerving as it is grotesque. The video is pure brilliant education. I had to leave a comment to share how uncommonly informative and impressive this has been. I'm disappointed that it doesn't continue for much longer. You have made my day great with this video demonstration. Thank you wise man.

    wow finger prints and everything thats cool , looks like a really awesome product ...shame its a one go wonder.
    That is a very cool but somewhat gruesome looking sculpture, it certainly gets a gut reaction from me.
    You've actually done a cracking job with a really difficult subject ...the inclusions kind of add to the sculpture in an unexpected way since in reality the crickets are consuming a huge amount of human resources too
    I like this and I'm learning a lot from watching your videos.
    Thankyou for sharing

    The issue with the shrinkage is the size of the heat reservoir in the riser. To move shrinkage to the riser, the riser (riser/feeder in your case) needs to be the last part that solidifies - and the channel to the riser the second last.
    You can achieve this by using a bigger riser volume, by insulating the riser, or by heating the riser after pouring. One way to do both insulation and heating is to pour an exothermic powder (sometimes known as exothermic topping) onto the riser immediately after pouring - exothermic powder will ignite and add heat directly to the riser, and its ash will insulate the riser. I haven't worked with bronze, but google suggested "Thermix 53 exothermic powder". That's not meant as a product recommendation. Handle with care, the stuff can self ignite at high temperatures and it burns very hot, that's the point.
    The 3 simpler options are to add insulation on top so the riser cools slower, to make the riser bigger, or to torch the riser.

    Add the water to the alginate, not the other way around to avoid those problems. Colder water will slow the kick slightly, but you need to work *fast*
    You can slow it from drying out and shrinking by keeping it humid, like clay, but best to think of it as a one-shot mould

    Something that size should be cast hollow. That would have eliminated any shrinkage. Great effort though. The alginate problem could be that it was either too thick (I think in your first couple of attempts for certain) or it could have been too old. Did it have a use by date on it?

    How would a blowtorch aimed at the top of the mold do? It might be a good idea to equip a bendable torch in order to avoid the risk of liquid propane coming out of the torch instead of gaseous propane. A piece of kaowool I could see achieving a decent measure of the same benefit a torch would provide.

    • @lundgrenbronzestudios
      @lundgrenbronzestudios  8 месяцев назад +1

      I didn’t put it in the video but I actually did hold a torch on the top of it for a little while. But maybe not long enough. I’m not sure how long it needs to be there.

    How do you get your sand to come out dry with your blaster?

    • @lundgrenbronzestudios
      @lundgrenbronzestudios  9 месяцев назад

      I’ve never had an issue with wet sand.
      Do you even drain your compressor tank? I bleed the tank to let all the air and moisture out every time I’m done with it.

    This is a pretty horrifying piece if you are creeped out by crickets like I am. The defects in the hand look like places where the crickets have eaten it.
    This piece would fit in well in a modern art gallery, not sure if you have any interest in a showing. You probably need a few more pieces?

    Hi Lundgren, in a video you had made a cavity mold with black/brown gel that hardened into the outer shell. What is that and where do I buy it? Thanks 🙏🏽

      I use brown microcrystalline wax to make my wax casts. Is that what you mean?

    • @odysseyraven5930
      @odysseyraven5930 9 месяцев назад

      @@lundgrenbronzestudios no sorry, not the wax. Maybe I relayed it wrong. You had mixed it together when you were making the fiberglass mold. You put it over the clay layer with the keys that you pointed upwards

    • @lundgrenbronzestudios
      @lundgrenbronzestudios  8 месяцев назад

      @@odysseyraven5930 that’s was liquid fiberglass. They sell it at automotive stores. Some liquid fiberglass is very viscus and won’t work. But a more viscus type works well.

    The metal shrinkage is not nearly as bad as you think. To someone who has not see the video or is an expert metalcaster it might even look intentional, like the insects eating atay at the skin.
