Among the 5 antidepressants I've tried, escitalopram (Lexapro) gave me the worst sexual dysfunction, even at low dose (5mg), and didn't help with my anxiety. I decided to stop after a few weeks. Recently I started taking sertraline (Zoloft) and I think I've finally found the right AD because my problem is more social anxiety and rumination than characterized depression. I'm starting to feel better, more relaxed, and the sexual side effects are milder than expected. A lot of fatigue during the first 2 weeks.

I have bad social anxiety and agoraphobia, plus negative self-talk and overthinking, which can spiral to full on depression and apathy towards life. I am on Lexapro and as the dose has increased my dreams have become more vivid to the point of nightmarish. When I am awake life is better, though. Any thoughts on the mechanism of action with this. Is it strictly a serotonin phenomenon? Any remedies you heard of for reducing the vivid dreams (in consultation with a healthcare provider)? I'm just curious. I'm not going to do anything on my own.

    • @LevelheadedMind
      @LevelheadedMind  2 года назад +5

Yes, this can happen with any antidepressant treatment and it is hypothesized to be related to serotonin. If you are feeling good on Lexapro you can use adjunct treatments such as Trazodone, Prazosin or Gabapentin at bedtime, or even consider some therapies to help. I have been on Zoloft for over 6 years but I recently stopped taking in October because I have always had trouble keeping a job for longer then a year or two and I thought it was because of the meds.
This past year has been the worst for me and just last week and this week because I am not over it was the most embarrassing time and the lowest I have ever been in my life.
Last week I had to give up a job where I was at for only 2 days.
The jobs I had last year were not so much better. One job I lasted 6 months, the other 3 months while taking Zoloft.
In November I picked up a temporary job that last 2 months and I did very well and I was off of Zoloft for a total of 6 weeks.
However last week the job where I only lasted 2 days I started taking Zoloft again the week before the job because I felt nervous again and ya I only lasted 2 days I am thinking becoming I am starting all over again with the med cycle and it threw my body out of wack.
    Now…….
My doctor prescribed me lexapro. I have taken it for just 4 days and I feel completely out it and having the worst anxiety and panic attacks I have ever had. But I do feel a deference from Zoloft I can’t tell if it is good or not.
I took Zoloft today because I am such at a low point but I feel defeated because I already tried Zoloft for so long and what I thought it was not working maybe it was because I have never been like I am these last couple of weeks.

It’s nothing to do with testosterone, more to do with dopamine and the delicate balance of neurotransmitters needed for libido to function.
Best option is to lower dose, or swap to an atypical antidepressant which does not cause this side effect.
I ended up with low dose zoloft and trazodone (which does not affect my libido) so I get some benefit from zoloft but keeping the dose low enough that I still have libido and then boosted be trazodone.

That depends person to person. What was the reason for the switch? Also did they do a cross taper or just switch it? Cross taper would be best considering she was at highest dose of sertraline. If no cross taper, then there will most likely be an adjustment period and even potential set back or recurrence of symptoms. Check switchRx.com for proper guidance on how to cross taper.

Hi! I have 2 questions and I hope you see this! If not that’s okay, too :) so I just got put on Zoloft 50mg yesterday and I’m absolutely panicking about all the long term effects people have said it caused them. I’ve seen where they said it’s hell & lexapro is better and all this. So question 1) What is the longest I should give it a try before I develop long term effects? I was terrified to start anything for my anxiety for that very reason but I was no longer able to function great because of it so I decided to try it.
Question 2) I also am prescribed 5mg reglan 3x daily and trazadone 50mg as needed for nights I can’t sleep. I’m most worried about serotonin syndrome, so is it okay for me to take the reglan and Zoloft 50mg daily together like that? I’ve stopped taking the reglan 3x and only taking it once bc I’m scared, haha!

Talk to your provider about when to stop, typically 6 months to 1 year, then taper it over 3-6 months depending on how long you were on it. Also be sure to learn de-escalation techniques to reduce anxiety that way you'll be prepared when you come off to reduce anxiety on your own.
As for serotonin syndrome, that combination would put you at risk so you will need to monitor for those symptoms.

Everyone reacts differently to medicines cause everyone's body chemistry is slightly different... so just trial with whatever works for you personally-and once you find what works "FOR YOU"-then stick with that. Best wishes

Lexapro made me feel sleepy and drugged. I don't think Zoloft does much except give me the shakes.

Hi, I'd be sooo happy if u answer me.
I'm a 18years old female, I was prescribed paroxetin, i took 10mg daily for 2 days then i couldn't stand the side effects specially Nausea it freaked me out I've never tried nausea before. However, i felt such a relief the second day i got rid of my social anxiety magically but unfortunately the relief lasted like an hour.
Now I'm on escitalopram 10mg per day this is day 4 i feel like my mood is better, but my social anxiety same.
    What do u suggest pls.
    Thank ❤

Note: paroxetin also helped my mood in that hour of the relief, everything was just perfect at that moment 🥹

It takes 4 to 6 weeks to see a full effect. You are seeing partial response and will need more time for a full therapeutic effect for both anxiety and depression. Furthermore, you may need to increase dose to get more robust effect, after 8 weeks. So discuss this with your doctor at your follow-up appointment.

@@LevelheadedMind is it okay that the partial response of paroxetin was much better than the partial response of escitalopram? Or this is a sign to go back to paroxetin

Been sleepy all my life, since childhood all they ever give me is antidepressants which make me crazy. I’m sleepy not depressed. Heard about modafil they say oh no that may do more harm than good. Here’s an antidepressant

Try phenilpiracetam. It is considered "nootropic" and relatively safe compared to AD. It will boost motivation, mood, focus and your general energy level. But works not for everyone and might be hard to get depending on your country
