    For those of wanting to experience owning rabbits but are not sure they work with your lifestyle or you don’t know if you can commit to them for 10+ years then fostering is a great idea it is budget friendly as the shelter will provide everything
    from a x-pen to hay to toys and food. The only 5ing you need to provide is veggies and love💗 It is a great way to look after rabbits while they look for a new home and can be really rewarding , you can also see if a rabbit works in your lifestyle and is the right pet for you. The shelter also covers any vet bills and check ups. I fostered too harlequin dwarf lops from my local shelter about 1 month ago and it is great. I hope this helps some of you. Great video as always Victoria 💗

      @@kloe3225 . I personally own a very loud dog who is part jack Russell and part collie (explains the barking) and my rabbits have been fine with it but it is up to you whether you decide to foster them or not😀

    To add onto the vet care, be sure that there is a rabbit savy vet in your area! Ask for credentials because cat/dog vets do not have the training for rabbit care/treatment/surgery etc. Despite my city have a couple exotic vets, none of the emergency (weekend/overnight) vets are rabbit savy.

    This kind video is why my kids and I never miss a video. When we decided last year to get a pet I found your channel. I watched ALL your videos and learned that a hammy was right for us. I built him a giant IKea 900+ sq.in. tank. Also because of your videos this winter when Hemberly developed a respiratory infection I recognize it right away. I didn't take no for an answer about waiting two days to see a vet and was able, with the help of the vet, to save his life. All of this was because of you and your videos! I am also an elementary teacher and I have "taught" two teachers about Hamsters and both decided that a hamster in a small cage in a K and 2nd grade room would not be the best option for them or the animal. Thank you for all you do!

  • @margalothegreat_hams
    @margalothegreat_hams 2 года назад +7

    I'm so glad this video was made, a lot of rabbits are impulse-bought for easter (mostly for children who don't know how to handle rabbits), are kept in tiny hutches or cages outside, and many times are "released into the wild" a few days after easter where they die. I hope this kept at least one parent from making that decision, and saved a bunny's life.

    I’m not sure if anyone else commented this but you could get hay from a local farmer. A bundle of hay (about 50-60lbs) is typically $8-$10. You could find organic hay(so no sprays or pesticides) save a lot of money!!

    • @kersenzomer2194
      @kersenzomer2194 2 года назад +1

      Please be careful with siblings because they can start fighting when they get older. You can sometimes prevent it when you neuter them young but it is not a garantee. Look for a shelter/rescue that has older already neutred and bonded rabbits, those won't start fighting.

    For those who rabbits are PERFECT pets for but do like traveling a few times a year, there's a great website called Trusted Housesitters where people come and stay at other people's houses and take care of their pets, while the pet owners are off traveling. It's a great way for the travelers to stay somewhere for free and for the pet owners to enjoy their trip knowing that their pets are being cared for and have someone at home with them. Of course this may not work for everyone and it's important to find a good fit for pet sitting on there, but just wanted to throw this out there. It works for pretty much any pets, not only rabbits.

    Hey Victoria! You may have already seen a comment like this, specifically from me. I wanted to do it on your newest video. My hamster has been climbing on her wheel and chewing on the mesh. And she has been chewing on her wheel, and her water bottle. So I concluded that that was a boredom symptom? And I’m deciding to get her the smallest bigger world nite angel cage! I almost have enough money for it and I hope she loves it! You’re the reason that my hamster is happy thank you for all the Hamster videos on showing people how to properly take care of their hamster thank you Victoria love you!

      How large is her enclosure and what type is the wheel and water dish? :)

      @@VictoriaRaechel The enclosure that she’s in right now is 200 square inches of floor space, it is a blue weal and it has plastic in the front and wood in the back, and her water bottle is one of those things with the food attached to them that has the hide out in it.! :D. Oh and I got the cage, it’s coming on Tuesday! And I’m getting her all new “furniture” and by the way in her current enclosure she has like a lot of toys, and I know you’ll love this part she has a bendy bridge as well, So I don’t understand why she’s doing that. Thanks. By the way I’m not saying the bendy bridge is going to fix it I just want to tell you LOL!

    Could you include the option of keeping your rabbits outside and having a hutch they go into at night as I have my rabbits outside and I’d rlly like to learn about the benefits and disadvantages of keeping them outside in a rabbit proof garden

    Buns shed 4x a year - a major shed in Spring and Fall and two smaller sheds between that are "usually" not as noticeable. However, some rabbits are horrible shedders and you will notice all 4 sheds. So. Much. Hair.

    I already have my rabbits but for a different reason. We didn't buy them. My aunt released them and most of them got caught by dogs. We saved the last one and got two more so it wasn't alone and so she didn't releaase anymore. But we have done a lot of research and we're still doing more.

    I wish I was a rabbit person. They're so cute and there are so many in the local shelters, but I don't think I have what it takes to give them their best life.

    Outdoor rabbit homes are the best idea in my opinion. Closer to their natural habitat. They won't make chew toys out of your furniture. They poop constantly, not taken care of and your home will smell like a barn. And if you are like me, you will have plenty of room for them. If you buy your food from the pet stores, this could be an expensive venture. I buy in bulk from places like tsc. You never need to go to the vet, bunnies will make more bunnies. If you just take care of them. Keep their home and water clean daily. Bunnies can take lots of time and patience, but they are worth it...😁😁🐰🐰

      My home doesn't smell like a barn ☺️ Confirmed by my boyfriends parents who have never owned pets. You 100% need to have a vet on stand by and it's irresponsible to say you don't. Breeding more rabbits when there are already hundred's needing home is also not the move.

    I had a friend, she was twelve and really wanted a hamster. I showed her your videos and she still got a small cage for her hamster including a 6 cm hamster wheel and a hamster ball- I told her that she shouldn’t get it if she couldn’t take care of it and she didn’t listen. She picked it up after buying it from a pet store and threw it across the room when it became stressed. The hamster wasn’t fully comfortable with being held but it warmed up to me pretty quickly, she gave it up after two weeks because “it was unbearable”. I was only ten but even then I recognised that she was wrong and quickly ditched her due to her very abusive tendencies.

    Sat watching this with my rabbit.. he has his own bedroom..a massive litter box as he is fully trained and then a dig box with teabag bedding which I scatter pellets and treats in and he loves it.
    I didn't realise how expensive they truly are.. had to bunnyproof the whole room and make sure he has lots of places to hide.
    I got him as a single bunny as his bonded partner had passed away but once he's neutered he will be getting a wife. But for the time being I sit with him for hours everyday.
    Veggies are pretty cheap where I am, hay is pretty cheap too but I get the best quality hay and pellets but even thats pretty cheap.
    His vaccine was £47.50, neutering is £68 and microchipping was £15..and his insurance is £10 a month...

    hi hi! My teacher has recently fostered 2 rabbits, and a solution is maybe to foster rabbits? it'll be sad seeing them go, but the adoption people can do vet care for the rabbit, and maybe even spay and neauter the rabbit for you, plus you dont have to care for the rabbit for the whole 10-11 year lifespan

    Hi Victoria, I got a hamster sometime last year and he was very jump at first so I decided to take baby steps and let the only interaction I had with him be hand feeding him in his cage from time to time I also rubbed toilet paper on my hands so he could get used to my scent. I thought we were making progress but out of no where he started acting the same way as when I first got him, jumpy and scared

    Adding to vet concerns. Not all specialize in rabbits. You may be traveling across town for vet care

    One thing not many people mention is the mess! Not just chewing but the fact they poop all the time and everywhere! I've had my rabbit for 11 years, he has a litter tray and has learned to do most of his business in it but despite that I always have to vac up before bed. Before getting a rabbit, ask yourself if you are prepared to have to clean up lots and lots of rabbit poop every day. If you are younger and still live with your parents, be prepared to hear a lot of complaining about the mess aha.
    Of-course I'm sure its possible to fully house train a rabbit, but it will take a lot of work and dedication. (Like training a dog.)
