GCC's Coffee Tree Nursery: First of Its Kind and The Beginning of Our Story

  • A coffee tree nursery is a crucial part of our operations. We always need access to healthy coffee saplings in order to plant new fields and replant old ones. However, as we have done with every part of the coffee production process, our team chose to innovate instead of sticking to business-as-usual. Business-as-usual in Colombian coffee, unfortunately, has been preparing and then planting coffee trees using small black garbage bags. Our agronomists launched a new system to grow our trees in the nursery with a biodegradable paper, produced and packaged with advanced machinery that we imported from Europe. The environmental rationale is clear, but why does this investment matter from an economic perspective?
    1. Improved rates of survival: Biodegradable bags allow for roots to permeate the lining and grow in a more natural formation. Losses have fallen from 10% to 5%. They also grow more quickly, ready to move to the field in six months instead of nine.
    2. Less planting soil: Our agronomists have worked hard to develop the perfect combination of soil and nutrient needs for young coffee trees. In conjunction with their improved health and roots systems, we were able to cut the total soil volume of the bag by 70% versus the traditional “garbage bag” method.
    3. Quicker planting process: Because the paper is biodegradable, planting a new coffee tree entails simply dropping the plant into a pre-made hole on the farm lot instead of unwrapping, disassembling then planting.
In total, our nursery processes eliminate about 50% of the total planting costs we would otherwise incur under the traditional method.

I love this video but there is a typo in the text. 'elimated' should be 'eliminated'
