The Sharenting Reckoning: How Things Are Changing for Family Influencers | Cosmopolitan

  • Опубликовано: 27 май 2024
  • ⚠️ Correction: 13:11 | Cosmopolitan misidentified the person speaking about legislation to protect child influencers. It is California State Senator Steve Padilla (D-San Diego).
Millennial and Gen Z content creators have built massive platforms-and fortunes-from splashing their children’s lives all over social media. In this mostly unregulated world of vlogs, TikTok, and sponcon, children are, for the most part, not entitled to a single cent they help earn. And despite allegations of exploitation and fears of AI and the Dark Web, the “sharenting” world is still split over what’s right and wrong.
Journalist Fortesa Latifi spoke with parent influencers on both sides of the issue: those who no longer make content featuring their kids and those who refuse to stop (and even a former nanny to an influencer family). And she digs deep into the murky world of influencer finances in this multi-billion dollar industry.

God. Hearing your daughter say she’s uncomfortable with something, the solution is to give them more money. I get that the children said not to take it down, but as a parent you have a responsibility to make sure your children is comfortable. Regardless of what they say. Especially when she knows that YOU would want to keep the video up and that it would be making money for the family

"Comparing my daughters" is just an absolutely insane video idea to have and then _go through with_ ? Like I cannot imagine what it must be like to see the content your parent chooses to make about you. Like, what damage are they unknowing doing to their kids in the way they talk and post about them online? "My mom tends to only makes posts about me when I'm trouble, but my sister is in videos all the time" is something I can see accidentally happening. What does that do to a child? Not only are they talking about their kids online, they're subjecting their children to public opinion, which they frequently can or at least will be able to see. It makes me so sad.

Also, as a kid, if mom takes it down, I don't get money. If mom keeps it up, I'm gonna get $500. So why tell mom to take it down? It's not consent and it is so unfair.

Family vloggers are gross, these poor kids can't consent to have their whole life shared with (potentially) the whole world. Every silly mistake you make as a child, every emotional moment you've had, every health scare, puberty, bullying, relationships and so much more is exploited for attention and money. These kids will be terrified to ever express their emotions to their parents in fear of it becoming content. Their lives are scripted and rehearsed. They likely see a happy family performing for the camera then behind the scenes, there's neglect and manipulation/grooming. These kids will resent their parents and every childhood memory or they'll be so self absorbed that they won't even understand the concept of every action has a reaction, there are consequences to every decision you make.

Even child actors who's parents did everything "right" still had/have a hard time as adults. Social media is worse than Hollywood for "child actors"

Yeah because at least the general public doesn’t know where child actors go to school, live, what their families look like. Kids on RUclips have none of that protection. For so many of them every aspect of their life is shown on the internet.

Tbh what scares me today is thanks to AI people can take kids’ faces and create CSEM or other fake videos pretending to be the parent without the real child or parent ever knowing. The potential for harm gets bigger and scarier as time goes on.

I'm so glad to see this being discussed on a large platform. I never really thought too much about it until i saw a British vlogging family sell a replica doll of their newborn baby, and now it's something i cannot stand to see. Seeing parents exploit their children's lives, their illnesses, their successes, their embarrassing moments, EVERYTHING, for their own financial gain is sickening.

The cognitive dissonance is phenomenal.

What about parents who put their medically fragile children on RUclips and rationalize it that they are just creating exposure and understanding of their child's disability. One vlogger admits not being married to her partner, so they can get the state maximum $ to care for their child's treatments.
