  • 18 July 2024 - A day packed with thrilling qualification rounds and heats that saw a number of World and European leads.
Slovakia’s Laura Frličková thrilled the home crowd as she stormed to a European U18 best in the 100m hurdles. There were also impressive times in the men’s 110m hurdles where France’s Lucas Domergue, 15, set a European U18 lead in winning heat four. Convincing wins also by Estonia’s Tristan Konso and Kyan Daniel Duffy Escalona from Italy.
In the women’s 100m heats, Miia Ott set a European U18 lead and Bulgaria’s Radina Velichkova set a national U18 best. In the men’s 100m, Germany’s Jakob Kemminer emerged from the heats and semifinals as the one to watch in Friday’s final. Great Britain’s Joel Masters and Italy’s Francis Pala with a personal best were next best.
Great Britain’s Thea Brown is the overnight leader of the women’s heptathlon after three personal bests on day 1.
As expected, Poland’s world U18 leader Roch Krukowski headed the qualifiers for the men’s javelin but in Finland’s Roope Mäkipelto, he faces a stern challenge in Saturday’s final. Another Polish athlete, Jakub Rodziak, led the qualifiers in the men’s discus with a personal best followed by European U18 leader Ludvig Ellgren of Sweden.
The women’s high jump was a hard fought qualification with seven athletes clearing 1.79m to book their place in Saturday’s final. Among them Hungary’s Lilianna Bátori, and Spain’s Ana Estrella De Leon and Latvia’s Brenda Džiliana Apsīte.
In the women’s 1500m heats, Poland’s Oksana Pestka led the qualifiers, followed by Norway’s European U18 leader Wilma Anna Bekkemoen Torbiörnss. Aldin Ćatović of Serbia led the men’s 1500m qualifiers

I wish commentators would stop using the phrase "lifetime best", It is simply personal best. Lifetime best should be used when an athlete is getting towards the end of their career. These athletes are at U18 level, of course they are going to be achieving PBs. They will do for at least the next 5 years as they mature.

I mean, a personal best is the best result you've done until the present day, so the best you've done while being alive (lifetime). Just because it has life in the phrase doesn't mean they will live shorter or retire earlier. It sounds morbid to you 🤷‍♂️

@@guilhermeribeiro7733 I think the point of the original comment is that it sounds exaggerated when they say lifetime best because is obvious what the achievement is. But I do agree that "personal best" sounds better. Maybe it's an idiomatic thing since English isn't my first language and I certainly do find annoying sometimes the ways to express certain things not just in sports.
