    In this vid Im going to show you how easy it is to add an analog dry through signal path around the Eventide H9 with TheGigRig G3. Understanding the basics of adding a parallel signal path can open a whole world of awesome possibilities. Adding a basic signal path around an all digital effect can get rid of any latency that might be causing an issue with things such as wet/dry or multi amp setups.

    Dan, I’ve just picked up an H90 and I’m getting digital latency on my wet amp (‘TPS wet/dry’) due to the lack of analog through. This is barely noticeable except for delays that need to be perfectly on the beat, where it’s an issue. You can route for wet/dry inside the H90, but then when you turn off the H90 (disengage the current program), you lose the dry amp completely. So I’d prefer not to route my dry line through the H90 really. Any thoughts on whether I can use G3 to solve this? I also have a Humdinger (and a Goodwood Audio Output) and a Wetter Box, if needed! Thanks a million in advance.

    • @TheGigRigDaniel
      @TheGigRigDaniel  Год назад +1

      Ok, the easiest way to do it is kill dry the H90, put it in a wetter box and put that in the G3 loop. I only use the H9 for things where it’s completely wet out one side like harmonisers etc

    Hi, Dan and the TPS family. I just wanted to let you all know that running a wet/dry rig with Eventide products is possible. And without latency issues too…
    There’s a setting on the H9, H90 and Factor pedals (including the Space) that allows you to change the routing to wet/dry instead of stereo. This leaves one output as dry and puts all the wet/affected signal through the other output. However, crucially the dry signal goes through the same A/D - D/A conversion, eliminating latency and comb filtering issues. Of course, this does mean that your entire signal goes through a digital conversion, but if you’re like me and don’t mind (or actually quite like) how this sounds, it could be an option for running a simple wet/dry rig. Admittedly, I’m a double bass player, so perhaps the conversion is more noticeable with guitar. I’m happy with it, though.
    Anyway, for an approximation of TPS wet/dry, you might run:
    Guitar > Fuzz > Distortion / overdrive > H9 > Output 1 > additional reverb > wet amp
    > Output 2 > dry amp

    Although other delays/reverbs would have to be analogue dry through.
    However, there are some problems to be aware of:
    1) The H9 doesn’t isolate one output, so ground loops could be problematic. You’ll just have to cross your fingers and hope you get away with it or that you have a ground lift somewhere in your system. Fortunately, I’ve got a ground lift switch on my preamp that seems to deal with hum. Dan, you’ll have to let me know if this is more of a problem, as I’m working with very limited experience.
    2) The H9 has no phase reverse option, so your amps could have phase issues. For this, you’ll either have to:
    a) Get lucky
    b) Choose 2 identical amps/speakers for your wet/dry amps
    c) Rewire the speakers in one amp
    d) Buy a GigRig Humdinger and have a proper set-up. :-)
    Still, this could be a simple option if you want to try wet/dry.
    You can also set an expression pedal to act as a volume pedal on any prests that might need it. Although, somehow, it does seem to balance out the volume levels across presets naturally. I don’t know if this my Eventide doing something clever or just how your ears perceive wet/dry. Either way, it sounds great and doesn’t seem to cause problems in volume jumps, even when the effects levels change between presets.
    Anyway, hopefully, this helps someone. Wet/dry is incredible, and it’s definitely worth a try!
    p.s. A massive thank you to Dan and Mick. I’ve always struggled with amplification as a double bass player. It’s so tricky getting a decent amplified sound out of it, especially as it sounds so flippin’ amazing without any amplification. TPS has given me so much more understanding and immeasurably improved my experience as a musician. Wet/dry is particularly fantastic, as it allows me to add the warmth you lose through a pickup back with some reverb without my sound becoming a muddy mess. A complete revelation. Much love and many thanks!

      Thanks Keir, that’s great! The issue this end is if you want to split your dry signal before the H9/90 so it doesn’t go the the converters. But that’s really great to know. As for the shoes, you’re most welcome mate, happy to help wherever we can 🙏👍

    One thing also I have noticed on the H9 is the outputs are phase reversed….Separate thing,but can I only use the isolated output on a Humdinger??…..I plug my guitar into an AxeFXIII,then send 1 output to the front of my amp….I have a nasty ground loop in this connection…can I just use the isolated out on the Humdinger to break it…….I also come back into the AxeFXIII via a Reactive Load box,but only the AxeFXIII to connection is causing problems…

      parallel with stereo is interesting, we do it in the WetterBox and the capacity to do it is there with G3/Atom as we have 2 separate mixers, we just need some more time in the software to sort it, to basically add a third line

      Hi Daniel, great stuff as ever. Should I be worried with phase issues due to latency using chorus/flanger using the method you describe in the video? Thanks!

  • @88ueshiba88
    @88ueshiba88 2 года назад

    Be careful and conscious when doing that, Eventide says "..we avoid comb filtering resulting from phase cancellation which occurs when mixing together a dry analog signal with a signal which has gone through A/D and D/A. This comb filtering effect can seriously degrade your tone depending on the frequency. We use very high quality A/D converters which are very transparent and do not affect your tone"

    • @TheGigRigDaniel
      @TheGigRigDaniel  2 года назад +1

      No matter how good the A/D converters are, they will introduce latency, so they avoid comb filtering by having no analog dry through, but if you’re using a wet/dry rig you need analog dry on both sides otherwise comb filtering is certain. The H9 sounds great, and includes a ‘kill dry’ function for this very reason 👍

      I use my H9 with a OBNE Signal Blender and much prefer delays and reverbs with the kill dry engaged on the H9 in one of the loops of the blender.
      It sounds better to my ears, like there is better separation. I’m not sure why that is, maybe because I have separate controls of the wet and the dry as opposed to balancing them in the H9.
      I’m not sure of the routing on the blender, whether it hits the H9 with a full level signal and the level control is a return level control, or whether the level control controls how much signal is being sent to the H9. If it’s the latter this could explain the difference in sound I’m hearing as possibly the input level on the H9 is more optimum. I have had issues the the H9 before where I set the input level for, say, a clean sound and then when I turn on a drive pedal or pedals the input of the H9 starts clipping.
      The dry signal through the blender is not exactly the same as with no blender, but it’s more a case of it being different as opposed to better or worse.
      That said, on certain effects that the H9 does (like the compressor) the parallel blend definitely introduces latency/phasing which you don’t want.

    Great stuff, Dan! I’ll have to try that with my ModFactor. Now, is it possible to have multiple parallel paths for analogue dry-through and wet/dry, or do I need to use a Humdinger in a later loop?

    • @TheGigRigDaniel
      @TheGigRigDaniel  3 года назад +5

      Hi Ross, there are 2 separate mixers in G3 so it’s possible to have a couple of separate parallel sends, but that will need some more software, but we can do it 👍🤓
