I got our family’s 60 back going. It was slightly stuck. I let it soak in PB blaster and some Marvell and I just put my truck in gear and just the small pull of the truck without throttle got it spinning again. Wasn’t stuck bad. I let it soak in Marvell for about a week spinning by hand to lube up the best it could. Got it started. Smoked like that really bad the first time. Cleared up after the Marvell and stuff was cleared out. Love these old tractors
Just fired up a 1941 B that was Sruck. Used ATF in the cylinders and left it for a week before I could turn it. Hand started it today as it doesn't have an electric starter. 82 years old and hasn't run in a few years but did today.
I used a grease gun to free a stuck Case tractor engine but filled the cylinder with AFT first then only used the grease gun to pressurize it. It worked well because of a hyd. pump on the front and a torque converter drive I had no direct way to turn the engine. On the JD you could not fill the compete cylinder with ATF because of the horizontal engine but you could fill part if it. I recently broke free a John Deere 50 that took three things, it took some penetrant, heat and bruit force. I heated the block to about 250Fwith a heat gun in the water jacket, then let it cool. It runs good now.
Fill the crankcase full of trans fluid let it run the transmission fluid will free the rings and clean the engine do that 2/3 times drin and refill 2/3 times
Brake clean was probably not the best thing to soak the cylinders in to get rid of the grease. Had the cylinder only been oily, you'd scoured up the cylinders more so than they already were pretty quick. The grease probably saved you alot of trouble with that. And if you haven't found out already, don't use those horizontal cylinder deeres on normal PTO driven equipement, you'll shear alot of shear pins under load, which is one reason I don't care to use those tractors. Sounded pretty healthy once she fired though!
@@twinkie27271that's not what hit and miss means, that's a completely different type of engine. But yes, you're correct that they don't fire every revolution. It's similar to the "gallop" of split plane V8's.
@@etherbanditsgarage9313 Good question, I've never had to buy one. Maybe baler belt supply houses, online flat belt supply...any Amish in the area, they would know and probably hook you up with some used belting that would work.
@@etherbanditsgarage9313 As originally built, a JD 60 would have been a 6-volt, positive-ground system charged by a generator. Since this one had an alternator, it had to have been converted at some point in time.
Duuuuh, tear the fricken engine apart and clean it properly, unseize the rings. Thaat's soome lazy butthead trashpile mechanic techniques. It's doing more damage to the cylinders.
Good job. Started driving Dad's '54 model 60 on the baler in 1960, at age 9.
Darn good tractor.

You can always spin the fly wheel manualy, when the battery is in question😉
I can see you haven't tried that on many with ring gear attached to it. It's not the most easy thing to do.
I don’t know about you but I have a 60 and a B. And no way I’m hand cranking that 60 lol. I ain’t man enough
Thanks for giving it life! Now it will be running in 2053! It might even make it to 2100!
So glad u saved it
Grease was definitely a bad idea. It sounded better and it will get better the more you run it. Those old tractors were built to work.
It most definitely has already gotten a lot better the little bit more I have played with it
First time watching tractor sounds great that smoke will clear out when u start working it!!

Hell yea brother 💯 i love it great job 👏!!
Just found your channel and love the video. Glad you got it running and learned some things from it
Glad to have you
Great job!
Just liked and subscribed. It will be a handy tractor. Good used 38 rear tires are hard to find.
Get yourself a flat belt and belt it up the 830 so you don't need to worry about batteries.
That’s a really good idea I really need to get a flat belt
Just remember you have to put a twist in the flat belt to get the dead one to turn its engine the correct direction .
sweet tractor tho, gotta love the steering assembly
Good job
Very cool Caleb
I have been hit with a magneto on a two cylinder and I am not sure it wouldn't light off that grease if given the chance
Every one can learn with alots of tinkering and Even anyone can learn something new On aney Day
You should have used a 32 to 1 mix gas and trans fluid
Either way it worked so what’s it matter
Best get those drivers to the co-op for a quick patch they look like hell!
Just need some rear tires and shes ready for the feild
Tuve uno muy bueno ❤❤❤

I think it'd be more important to get the tires all fixed up so you could actually drive it when you get it to run
Yeah but it would be a lot of money to put tires on it and to find out that there is a major issue
You did it right! Get running then tires. How many hacks do you see go buy tires and rims and motor is locked up......
LOL YOU GUYS ARE FUNNY!!! lol 🤪😂😲
So obvious you're only hitting on one cylinder that would be probably number one but the way it sounds
I’m the beginning by the end it definitely was on 2 cylinders
it's a hit and miss engine. it doesn't fire every revolution. thus the nickname johnny popper.

I wondered about guys pumping grease into cylinders, then removing grease?
I mean we got it out eventually just a slight annoyance
I've heard of pouring oil that's super thick into cylinders, but oil has different properties then grease
@@etherbanditsgarage9313 gotcha, you gotter done 👏
How much grease made it into the crank case???
none that i can tell
Hopefully you won't have any issues with mosquitoes with all that smoke. 😉
Me gusta lo antiguo
Don't you have another tractor with a belt pulley that you can spin it over at engine speed?
When can I get a big flat belt at
@@etherbanditsgarage9313 Good question, I've never had to buy one. Maybe baler belt supply houses, online flat belt supply...any Amish in the area, they would know and probably hook you up with some used belting that would work.
I think a lot of these tractors ran when parked. One probabally passed away and they just sit because no one wants them or takes interest in them
Some poor farmers kids didnt want to carry on farming.
Help! How much oil it consumed!
No oil just burning off grease in the cylinder
Probably may have been better with hydraulic oil pressure
That’s what I was thinking
Arnt them 6 volt systems
John Deere 60s are 12 volt
@@etherbanditsgarage9313 As originally built, a JD 60 would have been a 6-volt, positive-ground system charged by a generator. Since this one had an alternator, it had to have been converted at some point in time.
definitely born a 6 volt system.
@@danheaven9768no, they used dual 6 volt batteries in series to make 12 volts, most people just put a standard 12v battery in it now.
@@twinkie27271nope, 12 volts, they just used two 6 volt batteries in series when they first came out to get to that 12 volts.
those rear wheels are definitely not original size. original ones were much narrower. I used to drive a tractor just like it.
Pull. It. New. Plugs
Water pump on a 60?
Yeah they became standard on late John Deere a tractors and carried over to the 60
Kinda like bottle feeding a calve.
Looks like a bird's nest that flew out of the exhaust 😂
It was more like moss or something
Kinda spoiled it right off the bat showing it start lol saw it no need for the rest of the vid 😅
The first part was with ether not fully running on its own
Its just running on one cylinder
One cylinder
