Thank you for making these plans free. I've used my floor with hard foam for years making home furniture. Now I can build this, which will certainly help in my journey.
This is a very wonderful small area workbench. So many features. Thank you for sharing. Everyone stay safe, warm, happy 😊 and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
I had seen your video some time ago, now that I am starting with woodworking and have the same problem that you had, I am tempted to build something similar to your workbench as a final project in my course. I have just been introduced to Christopher Schwarz through your reference and am fascinated by his work. I thank you very much for this video and for sharing the details and plans of the project.
I love this bench (and your other vids). I used to live in a large house with my own workshop but had to move away so I sold all my tools and gave away my accumulated stock of hardwood! 3 years later you have inspired me. I spend too much time on my PC everyday, for work and leisure and over covid lockdown I've realised there is so much more to life, right! I'm now building my own OctavianDan inspired low workbench that I can slide under my large computer desk and use in my home office. I've bought a Japanese saw and my plan is to start woodworking again, but this time with a focus on the purity of process through patience and precision only using handtools and no sandpaper:) My own Woodwork therapy. Keep the vids coming.
Similar situation; had a dedicated space with some big tools, I moved and left them behind to rust. My main job is at the PC, woodworking is a treat. I guess some of us just have a need to make stuff with our hands.
I'm finishing mine up right now!! I went with a cheaper Irwin vice though...the veritas was a bit out of my price range haha. Wish I could post a picture!
This is amazing! I was looking at Roman low workbenches. But this is a million times better! Each part in the video kept blowing be away, especially the module for small pieces. Amazing work!
I would stick with the Roman style , I made something like this over 40 years ago it was to narrow and unstable and up graded to the roman stle with splayed legs about 35 years ago
😁 That's awesome! This is exactly the kind of thing I was thinking about (and looking for inspiration). I was also thinking about making a sturdy companion "bench" to go with it (so both of them could be used as something like "saw horses"). Very cool, thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for your video and technical files. I'm new to woodworking and am in the process of building my bench based on your plans. I hope to make some amazing pieces on my new bench.
I made something similar but not near as complex and fine as this bench. That was in 2004. The top board extended on the ends to accept a clamp on vice. The top board also functioned as a lid as the whole design was built initially as a sitting work bench/toolbox. There was an open compartment in the bottom for storage as well. I dismantled it quite a few years ago but now I think I might have to build another one. You do fine work, Octavian.
This is ingenious! I've been looking through ideas for small workbenches for my cupboard-sized workshop for a while now and this might be the best one yet. Most require heavy wood that I can't afford but no need for that, I have a heavy butt! :'D
Great design, execution and also ingenuity. I like how, you turn a problem into a challenge and create a solution. The fact that it is also, portable, it all the more impressive. Using one's own mass is also, brilliant. Cheers and keep up the great work (looked at your other videos).
Octavian, your video of the workbench and link to your plans has really inspired me, plus your use of boxes for elegant tool storage has really impressed my wife!. You have a convert! I'm going to build your workbench but make it a little higher ( I'm tall) plus I might fit lockable wheels for easier manoeuvrability ( I'm getting old and frailer). I've also found similar stackable boxes in the UK on eBay so I will be adding the cost of a box + some hand tools to each future project. The most important lesson I've learnt from your videos is to treat each project as a work of art. Thank You.
@@Octavian-Dan I modified your design to use screwed/glued + 20mm dowels instead of the mortice and tenons as my arthritic hands weren't up to it. I also made the width 30cm plus raised the height to match my B&D workmate. The wheels work very well but I've added a screw-down foot for 3 point location where the garage floor is uneven. I'm also considering adding wheeled bolt-on modular extensions to incorporate a router or a table saw that latch to the main workbench. I'll update you when I get round to these in the meanwhile Ill make the grandchildren some wooden toys and cases. Thanks for publishing your design much appreciated.
Thanks so much for sharing this! I came across your channel through r/woodworking from your post about the ambient light cover. Mate, I love your work and style. I've only just gotten into woodworking (haven't even bought my tools, although the list is strong haha) and couldn't even begin where to start with he bench. Thanks for the plans I will definitely be making one of these, it suits my small space perfectly. Cheers again mate keep up the good work I'm sure your channel will go far!
Thank you for the kind words. Don`t worry about tools and the bench, you will have them in time. Just to give you an example I actually just bought the top of the workbench(20x120cm) and put it on some boxes and worked like that for a few months :) When I moved to another apartment I rented a van so I took the opportunity and bought the wood for the frame. Just be persistent and have patience. Success!
My apartment kitchen is about that size, and I bought the Chris Schwarz book in your intro last week. Waiting for it to arrive. A good video would be you showing how you use it. Nice workbench.
The cool thing is you sit on it. Makes it stable. Don't need to think what table to put it on. Perfect if you live in an apartment. We use something similar here called a "goat," like a cobblers bench, made out of whatever wood is at hand, the weight of the sitter driving the pieces together and making it very stable. But it's simpler than this.
Amazing workbench. I have a piece of old workbech top and it is too narrow for normal workbench but will be ideal for this type. Thank you really much for sharing. I am clicking subscribe button because you really helped me. I will share my creation with you when finished. Thank you once more!
Thanks for sharing this. It's super functional and smart and for me it goes far far beyond the Romanian workbench. Fit what you need in a such compact design. Pretty smart. Plus your video just nice. And you've inspired me with bench dogs.
I would make the bench minus the hardware and dog holes. Put dovetail grooves and use match fit clamps and accessories. Great idea for a bench! Good job.
Thanks for the plans. I made one based on your design. Drilled some dog holes. I will work with it for a while before I decide on whether I need a vise and what kind. It would be great if you could show us the construction details for the small parts holder that you use with your bench. Also, I think I will make a simple saw bench the same height so they can be used as a pair of saw horses and a place to put my tools while I work on the bench. Thanks again for your inspiration.
This is brilliant! I found this video first and have watched all your other videos: they are just as fantastic! You also got a very nice editing style, do you edit as a professional? I would love to see some project files for the extension bench, if you ever decide to sell them.
Subbed! You've got an awesome channel here. As a fledgling apartment woodworker, i was already considering building a Roman-esque workbench on some trestle legs, because my knees are sore from planing on the floor. But i was unsure of the dimensions and height I should go for. This video really helped!
I made a modified version of this workbench during quarantine. I loved the design because it was compact enough for my small space. But having used it for several months now, I would really recommend a standard height workbench like a roubo instead if you can afford a little more space. The low workbench is quite the back-breaker! I'd also recommend a a workbench with a thicker top. In my case, the top would flex from my weight and cup the workbench top significantly (Although I did make mine about a foot or half a foot longer). I still love it though, thanks for the inspiration Dan.
My back is also not getting any younger but the workbench is mostly for planing and holding your piece for a limited time. A standard workbench is what I would also recommend but this small workbench works great if you don`t have that option. Also besides the workbench I made a low table top "workbench" so you can work at a normal table. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
A+ for features/in. There are a lot of possibilities to take this even further. A "high table", possible with moxon vice to cut dovetails at a comfortable height. With some clever engineering you can imagine a bolt-on attachment to use as a spokeshave horse with foot pedal. Split the top and maybe a 'V' on the non-vice side and you have a very usable rip saw bench. Incorporate a second bench as a bolt-on attachment. Bolt 2nd bench end-to-end to the 1st and you can handle long boards without needing a huge bench all the time. Bolt the 2nd bench to the 1st in a 'T' configuration and you can put a moxon vice/raised table on the side of the 1st bench and sit on the 'T' (handle dovetailing wide boards more comfortably). Despite my (considerable) mass sitting on it most of the time, I'd probably put about 100lb of weights on the bottom to create both the feeling and function of some substantial mass. Handling panels would still be a challenge--think the sides of a cabinet for dovetails, rabbets, etc. Would have to think about that use case. So far it feels like you'd really need the support of a more "modern" (ie non-Roman) stand-up bench for these. Maybe... if you have 2 benches, you could arrange them in parallel with something sturdy to raise a "1/2 bench top" (think the front 1/2 of a Moravian bench) between them. I'm evolving towards a full-up workbench here, but at least this solution knocks down/stores flat for all the work you don't need it.
This is just what I need! No space for a workshop and a need for a small bench to work on in the evenings. Thanks for uploading the plans. I can't wait to try building this and adding my own spin and accessories! :) Any plans to show off your accessories for this bench?

I am working on very thin pieces and I find it easier to make a special clamp, nothing wrong with the main vice. Here is one example of small strip I need to plough ruclips.net/video/umIJ7EtfjyQ/видео.html

where do you get graded lumber that is 5cm x 5cm is that common in the UK?
It is common here(Germany) like the 2x2 or 4x4 in the US. You can use similar, doesn`t need to be 5x5cm
@@Octavian-Dan yeah, that's what I was planning to use. more just interested in what you guys have available over there on that side of the atlantic.
thought you were going to build something. Have fun waltzing with your saw horse
the haters are the ones blessed with a ton of workspace.
what kind of wood do you used to make this one?
Construction grade lumber for the frame and a board of laminated oak for the top. Bought them from the local home center.
Congratulations, a wonderful project... Is it comfortable to use this bench and didn't you have any crick while using plane?
I find it more comfortable to plane on this bench than a regular bench and is stable as a rock.
Thank you, most probably you decided the height of the bech due to your height, what is your height?
@@burakburak8638 I am 178cm but I made it almost the same standard height as a normal chair. You can see more dimensions in the plans that are in the description.
Thank you very much.
omg! its asm!

That is a great bench. I will build my own copy. Do have some hints on how to build the vice? where did you get the parts?
Thanks. The vice was 32 euros and I bought it from fine-tools.com
@@Octavian-Dan Thank you so much. That is a very great store. I was there the other week to get some water sharpening stones. I let you know how it goes
