Jeffery Bybee blame the GE scoring. It has pushed the corps to push artsy farsty crap at the cost of good music and drill. Sadly the drum corps I knew, loved and participated in is dying a slow death and being born into something new wish I can't say care for nearly as much.
My all time favorite Phantom show was '07 On Air! And much of the reason it is my fav is the closer, Firebird Suite! A tough score with great horn runs that builds to an all out run for most of the last 2 minutes. I think Spartacus is a great closer for the emotion packed in it, but for pure musicality, drill and emotion, I go with On Air all the way!
If you haven't heard this before , and I can't believe anyone who's ever watched this classic 89' show could miss it?, however @2:47 listen carefully to either a staff member or phan......"Judges are you watching!!!" :)
Hands down, Phantom should have won it all in 89 (and I am a MASSIVE Vanguard fan). I was there (I marched Freelancers btw) and had the priveledge to watch the two biggest heavyweights DCI had seen in a LOOOONG time go toe to toe and on the night, Phantom wiped the floor with SCV... I think Santa Clara was rewarded that night for a decade of greatness and because perhaps there was an argument they should have took it in 88.
Freelancers were a great corps! I marched against them in the mid 70's with Guardsmen from Illinois. Too many corps have folded. I live in Arizona now, but have adopted Phantom as my favorite. I do love all the corps including Santa Clara. My best to all who march drum corps.
It's a commonly played symphony, so you probably have heard it. The closer before that is the Finale of Shostakovich's 5th. They use this material very well.
New World Symphony is one of the most EXPLOSIVE DCI closers, hands down.
+Branden Van Derbur 96 is better
thank you!!!
I want this Phantom Regiment back.
technoguy6000 Are they bad now?
STLAmmoMan They haven't done as well as they used to. Now, corps like Bloo and Crown are making their way up to the top.
I fear we'll never get them back like this :(

You know you are seeing a kick ass Phantom performance when the drum major dies
Ahoo!
1989 was no fluff power house drum corps. Best top 5 in DCI history. No contest.
I'd go as far as saying best top 6 in DCI history. But I agree with you 100% ^^^
thank you!

They definitely should have one in 1989 and 1978.

These guys practice from winter to the following summer to compete! Awesome work!
+Amy Naylor That can be said for any drum corps.
as tough as it is to pick favorites among phantom closers, i have to agree with you on all three of these!
how can 2011 elsa's processional not be in the top 3 cumon now !!!
Vaughn Orange RIGHTT?!?!?!?
Thank. You. Or maybe Richard Wagner sat up and took notice because he needed a good stretch!!!
The 1989 show was fantastic. I saw it several times throughout the season and was so disappointed when they finished second.
thank you!
Spartacus was the all-time bloodiest drum corps show I have ever seen.
Right around 4:45 those altos are sitting on that note ah!! So good just makes your hair stand,,.
Me too! Although I can't help but hate you just a little bit for making me add the 93 at the end ;)
3:06, besides the cracked note, that was a strong hit by the high brass.
That will be most definitely be in the top 8 video.
I can live with that. Good stuff!
It's a commonly played symphony, so you probably have heard it.
The closer before that is the Finale of Shostakovich's 5th. They use this material very well.
Judges are you watching?
+Apollostowel Love that bit.
what was the first phantom show to use that end wedge thing?
3:07 so powerful!
Spartacus is definitely the best.
I just finished the top 8 video last night. Harmonic Journey made the cut ;)
4th movement from Dvorak's 9th symphony, The New World
No where near perfection. Completely 100% Mega Ultra Super Bad Ass
I love you, thank you for this.
89 show was highest score ever in dci, next to scv that yr
Tiger Jingles now it's blue devils high score from 2014 with a score of 99.650
Tiger Jingles then the Cavaliers in 2002 with frameworks with an score of 99.150 and then Blue Devils in 2014 took the new high score of 99.65
You forgot Canon in D from their 2003 show "The Harmonic Journey."
You forgot about Juliet
what was the song played at 2:00? I really felt like I heard it before
what about elsa procession from juliet?
You got 89 & 96 backwards but close enough.
Sean Sullivan no?
❤️
Anyone know where i could find the full spartacus show?
♥
Should have been 3 wins out of three here without a doubt
