    This piece is a real look into history on how furniture was made. Times have really changed in furniture manufacturing. You did a wonderful job in preserving this piece. Thank you for sharing your video..

      It truly is, I wish the signature was just a touch more clear would have been really nice to name the two people that made it. For it to be in such good condition all these year later they were truly master at their craft.

    Another beautiful piece!!!!! How I love the heft and designs of these antique pieces! I much prefer them to modern designs! You always do such meticulous work!!

      Thanks Kim, Its always so much fun to find a piece this old, older than I expected as you tell the way the video starts. I always prefer working with furniture made from real wood which is so lacking so much modern furniture.

    I always wash my projects with garden hose, dawn and murphy oil soap in the yard before I do anything.

    Ria!! You know that I’m ❤Loving this piece!! The only thing missing was how did you do the handles? Happy that you kept them!! ❤❤❤

    • @RIA
      @RIA  Год назад +1

      Thank you Cathy - I do wish I spent more time on the handles the looked so good. They are part of the piece so no screws I would guess they are in there with dowels so really it was just a light sand and fresh shellac.

    Boy, the runners don't seem to have much use, mine is dated 1913 and I have had to replace some of them. And am looking to replace the bottom ones now. I am really interested in watching the rest of this of this one.

    Lovely result! ❤ 99% sure this is Eastlake; everything but the sides are right and the pulls are unmistakable! Oxalic not Salicylic acid, yeah? 😂🤣😂🤣😂 shades of me!

      Thank you. and yes you are correct it is Oxalic acid not salicylic acid. 99% of the time I watch the videos after Alex does the editing. but before its live. This time I did not see it till after it went live and my reaction was a face palm moment. I could have kicked myself but the links are Oxalic.

    I don’t have the skills or courage to work on so old a piece! Congratulations on a beautiful result!

      I would have said the same thing a few years back but its really not that different to a newer piece. 5 year old shellac comes off the same as 143 year old shellac. So if you get the chance to do a piece this ago I'd say take the chance.

      Thank you so much! I'm guessing by the dates on those prescriptions this piece was hidden that barn for some 40ish years not everyone can see it.

    That was absolutely wonderful. You explained all your decisions, showed us how you achieved the steps, and threw in the art lesson. But most importantly, you saved the piece. Do you think the original creators built it for sale? Or for their own home? The craftsmanship makes me think it was for sale. But was there a cash economy to sustain a sale? It looks rustic not upper class. Many immigrants, like the Germans in Austin, brought woodworking skills with them. Maybe it was a wedding gift. I would hope a local museum might purchase it. Anyway, I will quit blathering. 35:29

      Glad you enjoyed the video and the piece. Its so hard to know who this piece would have been made for. I would think it would have been a commissioned piece. The carved drawer pulls would have taken so much time I cant it being made for their own homes. I love the wedding gift idea like you say its rustic but sadly we will never know but its fun to imagine. There are two signatures on the drawer which are faded just a bit to much to read. The name are written in large letters they were clearly proud of what they made as they should be 144 year later and its still here.
