One thought on the toothpicks. If you let them soak in water for a like 30 minutes that won’t burn in the oven and you can use them to help keep the bacon wrapped
I made them yesterday and out of 2 packs of lil smokies only one single smoky became unwrapped while I was switching the pans! That is a good toothpick tip for other appetizers but with these guys you don’t even need em :)
I had an extended family christmas party yesterday and all the cousins were tasked with bringing appetizers. I made the bacon wrapped lil smokies! I didn’t have a barbecue seasoning so instead I used: -dark brown sugar -cayenne pepper -garlic powder -salt -black pepper -parsley I also used the cheese filled lil smokies. I followed all the cooking directions pretty much exactly as stated in the video and let me tell you, they were a hit! Easily the first appetizer gone and had multiple aunts, uncles and cousins raving about them! I definitely recommend bringing these around to whatever gatherings you may have this season. Thanks for the tip Raguseas ❤
I love semi-retired Ragusea content. I think you and Kenji are the only two foodtubers who I'll watch videos by even if it's incredibly obvious what the recipe is just by the title, and I'm not likely to actually learn anything.
Bacon-wrapped brown sugar dusted miscellany is definitely a classic American hors d'oeuvre. I've seen it with several other different things for the filling. Growing up, the tradition was water chestnuts marinated in sweetened soy sauce. Chicken livers are also pretty traditional. More recently, I've had dates as the filling, which was really quite nice. Honestly, it's hard to go wrong wrapping things in sweetened bacon.
Happily married couples are our best defense against aliens if they ever say "give me one good reason we shouldn't demolish your planet to build a hyperspace bypass." Show them some footage of Adam and Lauren...or my brother and his wife...or my love-her-like-a-sister childhood friend and her husband...and the aliens would all be like "Oh, you humans are too precious to destroy." Save us from the aliens, Adam and Lauren!
Those little wrapped smokies are called 'Pigs in blankets' in the UK, you can buy them pre-wrapped in shops. Typically done with proper pork cocktail sausages though, but I like the idea of the smokies too.
@ there party food, usually for little kids. They aren’t super good (you usually use the tube of crescent roll dough from like pillsbury) but they are definitely great for little kids or at a party
That 7 layer bar is such a ridiculously easy recipe and I'm sure people who eat it think a ton of work goes into it. The fact that practically everything in it is shelf stable too makes it really easy to throw together on a whim when you need to take a dessert somewhere.
I hope you are able to get some good nourishment and rest ❤️ if you're looking for laid back cooking videos, Nino's Home has alot of chill asmr-type content, plus there's cat cameos :)
Try some simple mindfulness meditation, it helps me a lot. Barring that, listening to "Turiya and Ramakrishna" by Alice Coltrane always works. Good luck and feel better!
If you're baking something that doesn't have a pan that you need to grease (say, cookies on a regular cookie sheet) you can toss the butter in a pyrex measuring cup and put that in the oven. Just don't forget that the handle is hot after you pull it out of the oven!
My go-to hor d'oeuvre is "Minnesota sushi". Take a slice of chipped beef (the salty kind in the jar). Smear a layer of cream cheese. Wrap the whole thing, cheese side in, around a pickle spear. Secure with toothpicks and cut into 2-3 pieces. Repeat until you run out of beef, cheese, pickles, or patience. That's it. That's the recipe.
@Josukegaming I know it sounds weird but it's surprisingly good. The salt and umami of the beef, the creamy sweetness of the cheese, and the tart crunch of the pickle balance perfectly.
We do this but with sliced deli ham! My mom insists on drying the ham and pickles with paper towels just like in this video so the cream cheese sticks better.
Love seven layer bars. I've never bothered to mix the graham cracker crumbs into the butter, I just pour them on top and it works just fine. I also do ALL the coconut on top. Messier but prettier.
Paula Dean had a Bacon Wrapped chicken recipe much like yours. Little chicken bites wrapped in bacon then rolled in 3/4 cupbrown sugar 2 tablespoons chili powder then baked. Probably one of my top 10 favorite foods.

You can prevent toothpicks from burning in the oven if you soak them in water overnight beforehand. This goes for bamboo skewers as well. So long as they're not in there long enough to totally dry out, it should wick water from the inside of the toothpick to the outside as the toothpick heats up, preventing burning until they're totally dry. Butterscotch chips were always a staple at my Grandma's house. No mt that she would ever bake them into things, but there was always a bag of them in the freezer and my mom and I would open up the freezer, pour out a handful, then shove them all into our mouths every time we walked past the fridge.
Bacon wrapped water chestnuts coated in ketchup charged with sugar(essentially cheap BBQ sauce) same thing just with a nice crunch with just pork on pork flavor. 😁👍
Anything wrapped in bacon is good. At Thanksgiving a few years ago someone brought pieces of mango wrapped in bacon........I almost didn't have room for turkey
My wife makes the bacon wrapped lil smokies for holiday gatherings a few times a year... they are yummy and are always a hit... even with non bacon lovers (yes, those people actually exist😳)... as for the brown sugar thing... Adam might make his own, but his wife was making this recipe... when your wife wants brown sugar to make something you don't hand her the bag of white sugar and molasses...you take your butt to the store and buy her a bag of brown sugar! 😡😆😆
Thank you both for putting these two homely American recipes on the channel. I want to try them, although probably I will need to adapt them to what's available in the shops here. Two questions: are the party wieners a pre-smoked variety, or do they get that smoked taste only from the bacon and BBQ spice? If the latter, then how about using some smoked salt? Or would that add too much salt? Also, isn't the seven-layer bar a tad too sweet with the chocolate, butterscotch and evaporated milk?
The mini sausages are smoked. Though lightly. You could do a brush of a Smoky bbq sauce instead of the sugar to get a similar taste. The bars are sweet and rich. Best if served in small quantities.
"you're very pretty, you don't also need to be able to wrap the smokies" Glad I'm not the only wife with this kind of banter. At least 4 times a week, my response to something ridiculous (and often intentionally dumb) my husband has said is "you're lucky you're cute"
"Bacon-wrapped dates" describes the Saturday morning trip to our favorite luncheonette that I and a former girlfriend used to take back when I lived in New England.

Thank you both for putting these two homely American recipes on the channel. I want to try them, although probably I will need to adapt them to what's available in the shops here. The mini sausages are smoked. Though lightly. You could do a brush of a Smoky bbq sauce instead of the sugar to get a similar taste. The bars are sweet and rich. Best if served in small quantities.
