Man, drop C# is like literally one of my favorite tunings - heavy, energetic, beautiful at the same time
early-mid 2000’s tuning. i miss it.
Hey, can you guys please explain to me what inherently makes a tuning 'different' to another?
Like what differentiates a riff or melody in drop d from the same in drop c#, drop c, etc?
I'm not the best theory wise so I'd appreciate input.
@@WholeLottaBulldog It's not theory per say, more how string instruments tend to sound at different pitches especially with distortion. Lower pitches tend to sound more aggressive and less harsh with distortion, that said lots of bands use dissonant higher pitch stuff to create certain effects, Erra and Vildjharta are great at it.
Drop c#1 litty
I mean it is drop C# but technically if I understand right the C# is a C#1 in this case while usually on a six string it's a C# 2. Different octaves. I do like the higher tuning.
Every tuning can sound heavy if it is played heavily. Drums and the way you hit the strings change the feeling of "heaviness" so much. But, a well processed low tuning can sound heavy AND HUUUGE at the same time. So, if you go down to B and below, it is easier to create heavy music imo. Because the "huge" part innately gives that feeling of something strong and heavy.
Nik Nocturnal also has great vids that show heavy AF riffs in Drop D as well. It obviously doesn't sound quite as 'massive' but like you say, it shows that 'heaviness' is a lot about the songwriting and drums giving 'weight' to the riff.
very well said mate
The act of being heavy goes so far beyond tuning. How tight you play live, the energy and the attitude you bring always makes a bigger impact.
Around The Fur is in drop C# and still one of the hardest hitting records out there
Drop C# is a solid tuning. I love tuning low, but at some point, it just gets too much for me because the low notes just seem indistinguishable from each other. I think a couple good examples of Drop C# sounding heavy is Disturbed or Linkin Park. They're plenty heavy in that tuning.
Trivium has been writing their 6 string stuff in C# since In Waves, definitely makes it heavy
Also a lot of Memphis May Fire's riffs were written in C#
C# is a good compromise between heaviness and melody. I use it all the time.
I typically keep my guitar set for Drop C, so I can go to B or C# whenever I want
Deftones makes c and c# sound so heavy yet so beautiful
The demo song at 1:26 sounds so sick!!! 100% something I'd like to hear in one of your next songs that you release.
If he released something which sounded like that I'd lose my shit. perfect mix of technical playing and heaviness
Never say never!
@@KeyanHoushmandLive Can't wait for your next release! Any plans for a full album?
@@ChrisFranklynn eventually, when the time is right!
@@KeyanHoushmandLive Sounds good
This is one of the reasons why I love Boundaries. All of their songs are in either drop D, C, or B. And all of their songs are breakdown after breakdown
Vektor actually tune HALF-STEP UP on their 6 strings, making it a F standard tuning, still being the best thrash metal act of the 2010s
I’m so glad that you decided to play Flatline by Periphery. By far one of my favorite songs
My band initially used to tune in C# but we changed too A# and I honestly miss C# because it is a lot tighter and I feel like riffs come across better and register better in the mix. But at the same time the feel A# can give a riff is very melodic and beautiful so you have to find the give and take and decide what is more important to you.
You should look into getting a 27'' scale neck. it'll remind you of that feeling and tone you were getting from C.
As an 8 string artist I love the Contrast between very low and very high notes. I'm tuned in EAEADGbe. It's incredibly easy to play scales and you got that Drop A tuning in it too which makes up for easy and quick chord progressions while still being able to retain low breakdowns/djenty riffs, also the standard tuning makes the high note solos beautiful too and I feel like I can reach the best of both ends with that tuning
Agreed. I play 8 strings as well. I used to strictly play in standard F# but now I play a half step down and rarely ever drop the 8th string. But I personally think heaviness is more about how you play than the tuning you’re in.
@@myronmosley2167 definetly, looking at early cannibal corpse playing in in D# standard, or the Stand up and scream album by Asking Alexandria in drop D, however, since ive been playing on an 8 string i never felt the need to go for the lowest most brutal breakdows, i tend to use octaves and harmonies over the entire fretboard, thats where it hits for me. i dont really care for breakdowns lol
Really like how it cuts through the mix. I love the rhythm of the lower tuned riffs so the brightness adds a melodic element. Cool stuff!
Great video man! I’ve been wondering about tuning up and have been experimenting with different custom tunings. Mostly for writing inspiration. Love that Jackson too. 🤘
OMG Bro beautiful!!! A loved all these riff parts
One down tuning approach I love is what Architects does. They play 6 string in C# standard but the low C# is G# instead.
They get the low chugs while keeping the higher strings for melodic stuff
Yeah it gives them a really good range and it enables plenty of cool riffs. Eddie Van Halen did something similar on the song Good Enough, it was standard tuning but the low E was a bass string tuned to A. Gave him a cool heavy octave sound while not being inconvenient and leaving all the usual high-up stuff available.
Yeah this is a super fun tuning
I think it's a good practice to have a good pitch shift for real time(like the ones Neural has) and use good shifting plugin for the production(like you used Waves as I remember). Good practice when more strings is not possible for some people 👍
@Wojciech Szeler the synth is so sick, I'd have bought it, if I were able to use it on my QC.
The pedals in the Bea are also amazing, just the amps I feel my Archetype Nolly (and QC) already covered.
Pitch shifting will always create nasty harmonic nodes and artefacting. Unless you specifically want that sound, ALWAYS retune for the part.
Buy a droptune pedal
@@Mr.krabz2182 Droptune pedals sound awful. Some of them sound good enough live but nothing beats just retuning for the part.
@@CrzyWzrd4L I agree when it comes to do it for tracking sake. But I wouldn't mind going for digital or analog choices for practicing. Even periphery uses it for live purposes, they use 7 string on drop G and add the drop if I'm not mistaken. But as you said, if something will be recorded, grab the right guitar and set it up perfect for the recording. It's all about optimising the time and effort with the value you will get at the end. So I won't mind using Neural for chugging to discover new riffs :D
Also, do you know if the shifting mess up more if you go much lower? I think there is a difference between you go 3 semitones or 6? Never experimented with that to be honest
It's all in how you write riffs, your phrasing and ability to play in the pocket. That's what makes things not only heavier but is a sign of a great song writer
I use drop C# a lot and it's such a cool tuning~ but that being said drop G# on my baritone is super fun to mess around and write with too~
Gungrave sounds so fucking cool that way. I'm a fan of this reversal experiement.
it's a bit funny that normal guitar range becomes a unique feature for modern metal bands these days haha
hahahaha you’re not wrong
Would love to see you play around with 7 string open tunings! Quick videos like this per tuning you find/like would be a really neat series imo.
I've never seen one of your videos before, but goddamn you can play so well. Definitely subscribing!
bro! you just gain another subscriber.
I really like the way you play, your melodies!
Good Job bro!
Actually really loved this lol. Caught me off guard, pretty sick tone 🤘🤘
Sounds cool!
That was sooooo sick! Never thought I would hear the Gungrave riff tuned this high 😂
Sick playing, mang. Those riffs are sweet.
Context is everything in music for sure, if it’s intended to be heavy it definitely can be regardless of tuning! Fun experiment for sure and very solid riffs 🤘🏼
Thank you for this content :-)
sounds awesome bro!
Sick tone & playing skills man and yeah it sure sounds awesome tuned up
Sounds amazing bro
My favorite band, Conquer Divide, has a song that is in Drop D, but everything is shifted up 2 semi tones. So the low D is actually an E, the A is a B, and so on. The song is relatively heavy. I was shocked when I went to learn it and had to pitch shift my Drop D guitar up to do it. They managed to make it sound pretty damn heavy (for what it is).
About a week or two ago I randomly come across Conquer Divide - and found that I have a major liking to them! Personally I’ve only listened to mainly Chemicals and Messy but that’s enough for me to put them at my top ten bands currently. I was surprised to find out that there all women, great for them!
Also which song are you referring too?
@@Nicholas.Colton nightmares is the song I’m talking about. I’ve seen them live and met them twice, have the key from their first album tattood on me, I’m an insanely big fan lol. Def listen to nightmares, at war, atonement, eyes wide shut, and paralyzed for some other absolute bangers from them
@@Nicholas.Colton i also just put up a cover of atonement on my channel if you want a quick easy way to hear it ☺️ lol
I would call it dropped E
@@ivanbrasla see I’m used to drop e being on a 7-8 string being almost an octave lower than standard 😂
2:46 Aw I wished you'd played that part of Grey with the new tuning!
Dude.... so good!
I used to turn my 7 up to C. I bought an 8 string with the hopes of tuning it up a step with the 28 inch scale, I kept breaking high strings, still had issues tuning up half a step. I learned to make the standard tuning for 8 string work, but it took me about a year to be happy with it.
Man it is insane on how good of a player you are!!! I hope to be able to play half of that at some point 🤘🔥🔥🤘
Tasty tuning and tasty playing! Reminds me in places of the technical levels of Napoleon
honestly having a 7 string tuned to this tuning sounds so cool!
Gives modern riffs an old school touch if you ask me :D
Heaviness is an equation of downtuning and attitude.
Tuning lower does hit harder but definitely doesn't stand on its own.
Attitude can stand on its own sometimes but not in all of them. look at early Trivium or Winds Of Plague, the heaviest stuff ever recorded in E Standard
That honestly sounds fantastic
sounds incredible
Happy Birthday Keyan!
Aye thanks man! Hahahaha
Speaking of open tunings, I was trying to learn a couple Devin Townsend songs, and Open C on a 7 string is so sick.
The low G is just 🤤
One of the reasons an ibanez ax7221 is amazing. It's got a gibson scale so you can tune it up to a High A with only an 8 gauge string
This is pretty refreshing. I've made songs as low as B-2 and it might be time to go the other way. Great video my guy, demo song was amazing as usual.
2:18 I love that riff from flatline by periphery, it took me a minute to learn it
Incredible! I love Drop C#, I usually play in it. Man, how did u get so nice sounding? Like ur sound is not like sand, it's like single entity.
I like playing a 7 in drop b on the top strings with a high f sharp. Really cool vid
I believe this is the type of tuning that Rusty Cooley uses for his extended range guitars. He'll sometimes use an 8 string, with a lower string at the bottom and a higher string at the top, while the 6 middle strings are standard tuning. Seems to work well for him!
Scale the Summit also did this WAY back too.
I think it makes the riffs where you're grabbing a lot of these higher pitches sound really sharp (as in cutting not musically) which is a cool effect. If it were a lot of just chugging 1's and 0's then it probably would sound less cool. Sick riffing though btw, as usual.
Waiting on my first 7 string to arrive from Sweetwater after not playing guitar since 2016 and I think I'm gonna try drop C# on the top 6 strings and the low 7th string tuned to G# for heavier chugga chuggas. Not quite sure what that tuning is called but I'm excited to try to cover All of This is Fleeting by Polaris lol
Drop C# Is still a tuning I love to play in. Listen to Kiuas-Conqueror which is in that tuning and it's super heavy while melodic. Great stuff!
All shall perish tuned their 7 strings to drop B. Meaning the low B stayed the same and all the other 6 strings were tuned up and no one would say they weren’t heavy AF.
Good idea😉
A 9-string tuned in low C# is one of the most satisfying sounds that exist for me, no amount of anti-conformism will ever change that
I miss when Scale the Summit tuned to AEADGBEA (Drop A with a high A on an 8 string). My band, A Taste of Daylight, we tune to drop B on 7 strings. Not many people tune their guitars higher, it’s definitely a way for new bands to sound unique.
Keyan, you can make any tuning sound heavy. Hell, you could probably make a ukulele sound heavy 😂
New video idea?
@@KeyanHoushmandLive YES lmao 🤣 UkeleCore
For me the highest register becomes to shrill when tuned up. Don't have a problem with the lower (but tuned higher) strings though.
It's all contest. Fast and melodic riffs works with higher tuning but slow doom riffs need low tuning in my opinion.
Only by seeing you play, motivated me to start playing my guitar (even without an amp don't have money) again
I'm still so surprised how heavy Drop D can sound. Remember, Like Light To The Flies and Pull Harder by Trivium are both in Drop D
I do think the F#l tuned Erra - Gungrave riff does sound better, not because the C# didn't chug as hard but the higher notes just sound way too high
that ..robo thingy.. at 3:02 was sick!!
Now you can play the pitched up parts without a pitch shifter. Immaculate!
its definitely a combination of tuning, groove, how the rhythm is accentuated, how heavy hitting the drums/production sounds as well as pick attack and aggressiveness of the distortion on the guitars. this is why bands can sound heavy in higher tunings but why older riffs don't sound nearly as heavy as new ones. you need a perfect storm of things or else you won't get the intended effect
Older riffs absolutely sound heavier than newer ones. Pantera were in D standard, and Dime's riffs are far heavier than most of what comes out today. Far too many people just automatically assume low tuning will always mean heavy. No, it just means it's low, and often muddy.
Lower tuned riffs _can_ be heavy, sure, but it's down to the things you said in the first part of your comment. Tone is arguably the biggest thing that makes a riff heavy.
@@metalswifty23 im sorry but you cant listen to something like knocked looses new EP or the new fit for an autopsy album and tell me new riffs arent heavier. Prefer the pantera riffs all you want and theres some great ones but theres just no way they sound heavier the agreesion in general is just dialed back. Production plays a big part in this which is one of the things i mentioned
@@charizardmaster13 Nope. Completely wrong. It's faux heaviness. I don't even prefer Pantera over newer stuff. My current favourite album is Trinity by The Gloom in the Corner, and they tune ridiculously low (I don't know the tunings they use), but I don't necessarily think it's heavier. It's a different kind of heavy, but not true heavy, which is where it's fundamentally based on the notes being played, and the overall package of the tone of the guitar. Low tuning is a crutch that often masks the inability to write a truly heavy riff, because they're relying on a lower muddied pitch to cover it up.
@@metalswifty23 except loads of heavy riffs sound savage af and rely on more than just chugging which may i remind you is what older breakdowns also relied on (see domination or one). Down tuning with the right production makes anything hit harder its almost shocking seeing the difference flicking between older and newer stuff because of that. Your only valid point is endless cugging thats just open notes gets boring and loses its edge if overused which has been done. But that doesnt change the countless other riffs and Breakdowns that are beyond well written. And if your just gonna deny that then your choosing to be ignorant and obviously not worth trying to convince
@@charizardmaster13 Your issue is equating savageness or nastiness with heaviness. They don't mean the same thing, and you're failing to grasp what heavy metal and its derivatives actually are. You're also massively putting words in my mouth when I haven't said half the shit you're claiming I've said. Maybe learn how to read before trying to make points?
It's like having a 7 string and just playing the highest 6. It's fun to do modern metal riffs in like drop D on a basic tele
Excellent playing. What scales are using to play in this style?
I’m old school for sure. 6 string tuned to either E or D#. Love me some old school heavy metal and thrash. Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax, Death
Love this! But is the gate taking away some of the notes that would make this pop waaay more?? I love this idea
I use a few seven string tunings that require me to tune up, but my three favorites are:
C G C E G C E
B D G B G A C#
A# F A# C F A# C
(I know two of these aren’t really that much higher, but relative to what I usually play, it is a bit of an up tuning for me).
My guitarist has actually been doing this a while. We tune mostly to drop C but he plays a 7 string with a 8 gauge string on top tuned to G. Fun stuff!
You have your very own guitarist? That's awesome! I've always thought it would be interesting to own a human. Where did you purchase him? Would you consider selling him? If he's one of the darkies, disregard this message because I'm not interested in purchasing an inferior product. 😁
That sounded fuckin sick
god those chords sound great
I play in a Melbourne doom metal band and with the current album were working on I use an 8 string tuned standard except the low F# is dropped to E. I also use a POG with it to give it an additional +1 octave.
Trends don't disappear, even classical music is still active. Only new ones take the spotlight
I think a lot of it is the mix. Bass is so important for sounding heavy, but so many metal bands mix out the Bass and downtune guitars instead. There’s also few bands writing different parts for the bass and guitar; the bass is usually just a simpler version of the guitar riff.
I’ve got my 7 string tuned BEBEAC#F#, so it’s like a drop tuning, but raising the other strings instead of dropping the E, and then there’s the low B on top. Makes it to where you can do inverted power chords and let the bass guitar take the root, sounding like you dropped the guitar an octave, but without clogging up the low frequencies.
A lot of perceived heaviness can also be derived from changes in tempo despite the tuning - i.e. faster riff -> slower breakdown.
this paired with a 6 string bass would sound amazing. maybe paired with a 9 string tuned down an octave as well. it definitely fills the higher register with crisp energergy and touch of chaos
Some riffs work in drop C# but the umph of the low end it what makes it heavy. The bass can supplement that but in modern metal the guitar is taking that role while bass is more of a secondary rhythm instrument next to drums
Yea I’ll take the low tunings. This tuning had me feeling like I should run through fields with a smile and had robotic sounding beeps lol. Cool experiment though, I always wondered this myself.
It's really Monuments-ey, honestly. Pretty cool
Heaviness is in phrasing. I only write in E standard and B standard (baritone, not 7 string). It's all tone and phrasing.
Rusty cooley had a 8 string signature (dean), but instead of having a f# he went the other way and added another high string.
27 inch up to 23 inch, fanned fret i believe.
Every time I hear drop C# I think of early of mice and men and trivium, one of my FAVORITE tunings ever. Very cool!
In standard tuned 6 string guitars I have felt that the D string starts to lose that palm mute attack and it starts sounding very different on the G string. So my theory is, as long as you can palm mute and get that sound, you can make it sound heavy.
agreed with you, the demo song sounds awesome but defo dont have that much weight than it would in lower tuning kinda makes it rockish than metalish if you get what i mean
That guitar is so nice . When i was buying a guitar a few years ago, it was that or the Misha Jackson in Orange . Lambo won. I still want tone of these . They feel awsome
So you say it's economically a good invest to get a 10 string :D
Really looking on 8 string models man, as things get heavier.. Love it!
Tunings aside, your riffage is crazy! Sick phrasings
Tasty riffs!! 🤌🤌🤌
It's 2022 and this trope just will not die huh
Man I love the riffing at 1:27 !! From which song is it?
Conclusion: No, tuning lower is not necessarily heavier, it never was. But it makes a bit more sense to write something heavy in a lower tuning, and personally I just prefer the sound of lower notes.
Generally I use E for energy, D for groove, and C for heavy, with the tunings in between to achieve a mix of these feels.
Anything much further I’d use as a contrast to make something stand out, but as a musical tool, I find the usefulness of super low strings negligible compared to the logistics of achieving them.
D Standard and Drop C are the sweet spot for me.
Right on!
I built a guitar specifically for this. I love the new sound
What amp do you have/ pedals that shit sounds insane!!!
i like tuning a lot on C# standart and Drop C# for melodic stuff or even heavier stuff i think that it's the most vesatile guitar tuning ever even than E Standart
Dude that 1st riff was killer
Heaviest I have played on is probably on Drop A Tuning but where I mostly find myself playing is C or C# it's a pretty solid tuning and fun to play on. Some days I play on Drop D or just standard still sounds a little heavy just depends how you play it if that makes any sense.
flatline sounds sick tuned up!
Its still in the same key. Can't wait for P5!
