wait... i've had this microphone for like a year at this point... i figured i'd watch this to see if maybe theres some settings i could tweak... then he says, "i like that it's clearly labeled 'back.'" I'm like, what? I look, and i've been talking into the back of my mic for the past year. Good shit guys, gna kill myself now, bye.
Boi😂
HAHAHAHA!!!!
This comment made me literally bust out laughin 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Dude I just saw that tonight & I’ve had this mic for like 5 years lmfao
These are excellent mics as I own 5 of them. Use 3 to mic my drums with, one to use with acoustic, electric or bass guitars and another I just picked up a few weeks ago for doing instructional videos. The sound I get from using 3 of these mics on a big drum kit is amazing and rivals a full drum mic setup using 5 or more dynamics and two overhead condensers. The vocal quality is outstanding although they are very sensitive so if using for podcasting or any type of voice over, a quiet room is a must and so is a pop filter. By far the best $100 mic out there and if not looking at wave patterns on a monitor, the sound is just as good as mics costing hundreds more. In fact, I like the sound of these more so than some condensers that sell for $500+.
Excellent input! What is the mic placement you use for a kit? Overheads & a Kick?
I experimented with at least a dozen different placements, heights and angles of the three AT2020's being used to mic the drum kit. And overall, the best sound was achieved with a basic setup. One mic is about 20" in front of the kick drum about 15" off the floor. This mic is rotated ever so slightly up as well to not be absolutely flush to the kick drum batter head. Doing so seems to enhance the sustain of the rack toms.
The other two mics are on each side towards the front of the kit. The mic on the snare side is about at about 30" above the floor, the mic on the floor tom side is about 36". They and are spaced 65" or so from each other, about 30" away from the kit, are on about a 40 degree angle and flush towards the kit with no turn of the active surface. All three mics are mounted horizontally.
I have recorded using the setup above and also with traditional drum miking using 2 overhead condensers and 6 dynamics for an 8 drum kit, a total of 8 mics. Quite honestly, there isn't that much of a difference with the exception of the ability to tweak each drum to a certain extent, which is more important with the snare as opposed to any of the other drums. Another advantage to the 3 condenser mic setup is simplicity, as I don't have a ton of cables and clamps all over the place. The mics are connected to the computer using a PreSonus Audiobox 4 channel interface along with Studio One 3 software.
could you comment some links as to where i could find a cheaply priced phantom box and chord to go with the mic?
When you mike the drums I'm assuming you have one set as an overhead. Tell me about the bleed from bass guitar and rhythm & lead guitar players. Is it worth the set up if it also picks up the other players?
do you need the um2?
Now I understand why it's usually bundled with P-Filters. Dude, your plosives were killing me!
no kidding
I think it's also how he talks lol
I am quite happy with his work, and I like that with each microphone I have watched him talked about, he has showned the microphpone the same way. THIS makes it a lot easier to know why I should or shouldn't be interested in one microphone and not another microphone. It also shows that he is organized in the way he talks about each microphone. Thanks for these videos.
2:50 the rickroll this man pulled. Madlad
I love the way he reviewed this and rickrolled us while he's at it.
Just wanna drop a comment here. I've been wanting to know more about microphones because I want to start my song covers, and every single microphones that I wanted a review on, Podcastage has it. Keep it up with the reviews, man. I really enjoyed your work and thank you for explaining things so easily.
Podcastage: Discretely Rickrolls everyone
Everyone: We've been tricked, we've been backstabbed, and we've been quite possibly bamboozled.
Amazing Rick Roll! I liked the review, you, and your effort!
I actually just bought this microphone the other day, all because of this video thank you man, I am all the way from South Africa
@IAmPresenting It's a very good microphone hey, the review didn't lie and when it comes to the BG noise, it's not much, the Mic has a way of prioritizing your voice over everything else
Hey , Where'd you get it & did it come with all the cables?
use pop filter
He doesn't use a pop filter unless it's included.
Do you know what pop filter to use with this particular mic?
What? Why not?
Because the point of the video is to show off and review the microphone without any additional accessories, only what it comes with
Veled Şehri O
do you guys know that he gave us help and rick rolled us at the same time...lel
This..... Is what iv'e waited for! I have the USB version of this mic, mainly because all i use it for is for vocals and commentating, and i LOVE this microphone! It sounds amazing, it just doesn't have the customiseablity of the regular one. And one last thing, did you just Rickroll me?
You've been rock rolled. And yeah the USB has a Freq Response through 16kHz instead of 20.
+Podcastage Lol rock rolled XD
I've had one since 2005 when it was first released. It still works. I've dropped it several times.
The at2020 is on level with some mics that cost a lot more. Possibly better. It depends on use and technique. Can't forget mixing skills etc. It is pretty much a no bullshit microphone. Nothing extremely spectacular by any means, but does pretty damn well up against bigger competitors. I own 2. That should tell you how much confidence I've had with it. I definitely wouldn't purchase twice if it sucked, that's for sure.
i bought one but the sound power i mean volume when i put my video on instagram is not that high what i do?
@@maxafshar Are you using a preamp? Would be good to invest in one. Especially when you are in that line of work/hobby. A decent preamp will give it potential. Microphone signals are typically very quiet, so they need a lot of gain to reach line level.
I have owned this mic for like 10 years..Very good..No problems at all..
The metal thing that mount on the mic is crap tho..That thing broke after like a year of super LIGHT use.
_sees Figure Eight in the background_
_immediately values your opinion more_
I like that you actually tell people to give you a thumbs down if they think the video sucks
01:35 - At still... our singer managed to record two full demo songs singing into the wrong side of it :D
You're my favorite mic reviewer, EVER!!
Holy crap I love that song by Kansas, I love your reviews!! I've considered buying the excelvan bm-800 with the behringer um2
+Doc Seno I think that will be a nice set up. =)
thanks man, thanks lot. i was thinking about buying AT 2020 and UM 2 and I was little bit confused. this video made my day :)
Awesome! Happy it helped.
Awesome review! Thanks for succinctly getting to the point while still being informative.
I love how when you search a mic into youtube, he's one of the first videos to show up, he is my go to for a mic review that I know I can trust
we just g0t rick rolled xD
You're welcome. ;)
Hoi brother profile pic*
Thank you for providing an informative and succinct review with no rambling!!!!!!
It’s so much easier to trust this review after spotting the Elliott smith album in the back lol
Thank you
this dude just rick rolled us in a mic review...respect
I am surprised to hear that the keyboard noise was nowhere near what many people seemed to claim...
At this point I was using an Apple Magic Keyboard which is relatively quiet.
you are so ahead of your time! great reviews
This is the most entertaining review style video I've ever watched. I might've watched this even if I wasn't interested in the microphone.
Just bought this mic for my channel. I’m really excited for this mic
love your videos keep it up :)
My drummer loaned me 2 microphones. 2 ATP48's or so I thought, in reality 2020's. I didn't know that I already had a gold mine of mics in my house! No wonder my vocals sounded so crisp and clear from the last recording I did. I never thought about it, and packed them away. They are going to be used again for sure. Thanks for the help.
This is a great review Bandrew. Thanks.
You're welcome. Thank you.
Thanks for all the mics you reviewed! You helped me to go with the AT2020. Love this channel.
I’m gonna have such a nice mic setup when I buy this man I’m gonna love it and I’m gonna buy a tripod which I haven’t got for any mic I’ve ever owned yet
Im using this in my singing content in livestream. Im a Baritone, i love the mid and the high is also fine. Just make sure to have a right position in your mouth while singing. I also use Yamaha Ag06 interface to adjust the Amp and gain. It works for me. In terms of room noise, yes it can capture, so i had an sm58 dynamics incase noise is too loud.but this mic is a better sounding than those of cheaper bm800 and replica mics on online stores. I got the at2020V version, the silver chrome limited edition and it looks so flashy. Nice review
Thank you so much for this video. It was extremely helpful. I bought this mic over the winter,, but since I'm not very tech-savvy I am just now setting things up and had no idea what I was doing, haha. This is my first condenser mic, I've only ever used dynamic mics. Just one question, either for yourself or anyone else who has experience and wants to answer: is there any advantage to having the mic upside down/hanging in front of you, vs having it right side up in front of you? Or does it not matter, as long as you're conscious of using the front of the mic?
I got a hold of a AT2020 as a freebie that I was going to gift to someone but already had the Behringer UM2 and was trying to send someone an example of what it would sound like with these two together. Got lucky you did that for me! Great video even if you didn't already own the hardware, you just happened to be the happy lucky video to meet both requirements.
THANK YOU FOR PLAYING CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON THO
definitely worth it for my practice animations
good job man!
The recorder solo was mind blowing
Damn I just got rick rolled lol
I paired this with the Scarlett solo 2nd Gen USB audio interface and the result was wonderful
2:50 WE JUST GOT RICKROLLED
Just seeing you play guitar into an amp through a speaker and then into the freaking mic is so funny.
Apparently Billie Eilish recorded some of her vocals on one of these.
doesnt say much lol
@@ee1yd don’t be contrarian just for the sake of it. Whether you like her music or not, it’s clearly very high quality.
I love your reviews. Im planning on making a small home recording studio and your videos really helped me in deciding what to get and what not to get
Awesome! Have some fun making cool music/recordings.
In the future look at RODE NT1 (of course if u can buddy) :D
Props to you for having the Figure 8 vinyl in the background.
I have this mic and it;s alright. Ready to upgrade to Rode NT1 or AT4040
Thank you and with your help I am sure I will be learning more about EQ. There is another guy on the net that is a great help. Have a nice day Podcastage.
Don't reply if this is too personal.. But, what do you do as a job? Just curious..
+Soberse Something that has to do with numbers, and nothing to do with audio gear.
I got it... He teached prison inmates to count...
I Am Nerd ? -accountant...
No Shit Sherlock
I Am Nerd ? I like you.
I bought the AT2020 and couldn't get any sound from it, so I did some googling and found this video. You got sound using the same Behringer UM2 that I have! I did not know about the phantom power thing and found the "+ 48v" button on the back, and then instantly got a whole lot of feedback as the mic and monitors were cranked. Thanks for the phantom power tip, first mic I own with that feature! Recorded my son's drums from overhead and it sounds fantastic. Hope to do the same with my drummer next week!
Thank you for making these videos. You cant imagine how much you helping me out 👌🏾💯
Just got my AT2020, I'm waiting for my UM2 to come in which should be soon, can't wait to try it out!
Have fun with it.
amazing singing skills!!! lol
i actually wanted to set the exact mic and exact audio interface together. really happy i found this video. i think it would be a good beginner set to record electric guitar, bass, vocals and some kinda good quality voice overs
I came here for a review and then promptly got Rick-Rolled. Podcastage +1, Me 0
Love your vocals mate, awesome...
0:40 wait so does it work with a focusrite scarlett solo 2nd gen?
Yes. I've been using it with a 1st Gen for years
@@pandurpz2506 You happy w this mic? I just bought a Scarlett, and am looking for a good mic bundle under $150. This seems to be the move. I'm looking at the current 2020 kit on the A.T. site for $150. This video sounds a little trebely tho, does it give good bass tones?
Just wanna say thank you so much for all of your reviews its so helpful! youre the best!
impedance is pronounced “impeedance” it sounded like you said impotence. lol
Yours was the only video that answered my question of "is it okay to record into the backside or top?". The answer is no. Thanks.
I believe we were just Rick Rolled...
+Aramis You absolutely were. HAHA! =) =) =)
Why wouldn’t you want this for commentary? This is absolutely perfect and not to expensive. It doesn’t pick up any outside noises and that’s what you want in commentary
If I will use phantom power, should i so have a soundcard?
This is a condenser microphone, it NEEDS 48V of phantom power to actually work properly.
Been waiting for this :).
nice review. as always :)
Thanks for the review. I currently have one on order to give it a try. Hopefully I like it enough to switch all 4 of my mics to this model from the at-2100.
::RecordsFullAlbum:: "...wait... why does the front of my mic say "back"....wait, holup..no...nooo...nooooo"
Thanks for all your informative (and entertaining) videos. Love them.
CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON THERE'LL BE PEACE WHWN YOU ARE DOOONE
Tess The Angel TESS I FOUND YOU
youve taught me about so much in so little time
Can you link the sound card your using?
linked in description.
My dad just bought this for me today so I decided to watch this.
Kansas on the guitar?
Carry on my wayward Paulo!
+Podcastage good taste
The thing that I love about mics, is that even after 5-6 years, the mic is still either really good or at least useable
Do a review of the RODE NT USB. I need a new mic and I am looking at that.
+GhostTaco Added to the poll.
+GhostTaco indeed i wanted to request that,too.GG
+Podcastage I wanted that review too of the Rode NT usb
Podcaste give me reply on this please
Which should I buy AT2020 or Behringer B2 pro
please, please !!!! use a pop filter .....
Thank you for making and uploading - great video, and very useful - im now pursuing voiceover work ! :)
Congratulations John! That’s awesome news. Best of luck!
@@Podcastage Thank you :)
It needs power, NINTENDO POWER
love this video, just waiting for my at2020 to be delivered, can't wait
hello podcastage you could make a comparison between the MXL 770 and the Audio Technica At 2020 and seen your two videos but which can not choose , could you help me? I see your videos since you started ! could you compare them with exactly the same conditions
Gibran yop1 this mic is better in quality by a little, better for game play, voice over, singing and anything like that. Is it worth the $10 difference? 100% BUT, if you want to spend a little amout of money but have hood quality, I would recommend the 770
Hood quality?? Like this the shit they rap with to make that fire mixtape in the hood?
which is better?
p120 or at 2020?
Your reviews are the BEST.
THE SAMSON C01 SOUNDS BETTER
Great video 📹 man! I'm thinking 🤔 about getting one of these microphones for my vocals 🎤.
Would the AT2020 be a better choice for a podcast-like setup than the SM58? Currently just looking to upgrade from the Blue Yeti and using the Scarlett2i2 as an interface.
I'm fascinated with mic planning to get it someday ❤
Thank you for this review - you're the best! I'm planning on getting this mic for recording voiceover lessons and vocals for music production in my home studio and I guess this is one of the best options around for under 100€, am I right?
I'd planned to add a t.bone mb85 beta (Thomann's copy of the shure sm58) for singing live and a t.bone mb75 (copy of the shure sm57) for recording guitars out of the amp. You think the latter would work better for this purpose as it's an amp/instrument mic or could the audio technica at2020 suffice? I want my guitar recordings to have a decent quality and be clear (avoiding unnecessary noise).
That's a lot of questions but you're always my go-to RUclipsr when it comes to all this - you've always been helpful.
Thanks a lot again and keep it up!
Once again Bandrew, great video!
love that figure 8 vinyl in the background
the elliott smith LP in the background
This was an excellent review in general. Thanks! :D
I have decided to go with a mic with audio interface. I know they have this in a USB version, but I think this is more what I'm looking for, hooked up with the focusrite scarlet solo.
That is a GREAT setup. I always prefer XLR mics over the USB versions because you can upgrade interfaces if you need to. =)
Thumbs up for the Elliot Smith vinyl in the background!
