Hey a good tip when using the double side tape and is to pull a couple inches of the tape protector off each corner and have the tabs hanging out; line it up and step back to make sure it’s on straight. It’s much easier to adjust only having a small portion stuck. Once it’s all lined up then pull the tab and press down in those areas.
This is what I do too. Leave tails of the backing until it's aligned, then pull the tails of the backing and it will settle right down where you have it.
Me as well. I also extend the backing tape with a small strip of masking tape.
I don’t know if you’re required to display a front license plate or not, but that front plastic mount will rub off the paint on the bumper. Just a heads up!
@PatrickClayton5712 - nailed it!
Really good tip 👍🏼
Sounds like another person to help install would be needed. I like the look of it.
Ditto.
Clear wrap works great and I think would look better. Still a gorgeous truck!!!
The bug deflector looks fantastic, and the pinstripes on the fenders too.
A trick with 2 sided tape, just pull a very small tab off the backing, then once in place you pull the rest of the backing off. Same thing when applying stickers.
100% correct …this is a pain to put on straight by yourself. I did it myself but 2 people would work so much easier.
Maybe sand it before you install it may be a better solution. Normally you only take off the film on a small amount of tape, get it aligned and then pull the rest of the film off the tape as you go along.
My OCD would probably cost me another $100, but yeah, looks sharp!
Personally think PPF is a better option. Have it on all my vehicles. It's saved my paint more times than I can count. But that's what it's there for.
So, when installing items with that double sided foam tape, you don't remove all of the backing. You start the backing and fold it out from under the part so you can line the part up. After it's lined up, you pull the backing off.
Looks great! Despite the minor issues a much needed upgrade with rock chips already on the hood.
I had the same issues with mine it was so sharp I went over the whole thing and smoothed all of the sharp edges before install.
That was the first mod to my SuperDuty! Key to installing is to only remove about 1 inch of tape from each section then place it on the hood, ensure it is where you want it then pull the tape off.
I will agree it is very sharp and I have cut myself opening the hood! If I had known that I would have smoothed the edges down first.
I’ve done several of these. I don’t pull all the tape backing off at once. I think the instructions actually said that. It’s very hard to get lined up.
That said, I think they look good, and do a really good job protecting the truck. The front of the Super Dutys in particular are susceptible to chips.
The instructions should say to peel just enough of the backing strip so you can place the bug shield in the correct location. Then pull the backing tape and press down as you go. I put one on mine, happy I waited for the OEM bug shield. Looks very clean.
I bought one for my 24 too, for the same reason. My truck is black so it blends in and not noticeable. But I like it on your truck too. I install mine by placing it where I want it, putting masking tape the hood and a piece in the shield, marking a line on both pieces of tape when I get it where I want it, and then remove only about 2 inches of each section of the red tape and fold it so it stick out then place it where I line my mark up and slowly start removing the red parts of the tape from the middle out. (Hope that makes sense)
I always add a bug shield to my trucks, they really help for bugs and rocks protection. I usually color match them to the truck to give it an OEM plus look. What people say about a tail on the tape is correct and makes things WAY easier. Maybe a second person in this case too. If it got cracked this idea might be a good redo.
The truck looks nice with the contrasting deflector.
Sorry you had the issues you had. My Wife helped me . I installed the AVS Aeroskin Lightshield on my 250 hood. I wanted the lights on it. Its installed the same way you described, was easy to line everything up with 4 hands instead of 2. She was on 1 side I was on the other. Thank you for another great video. Continued safe travels.
I like it a lot. Maybe others planning to add something like this to their vehicle should have a second set of hands to help them line everything up and keep it from moving too much during the installation.
Not something I’d do, but it’s your truck so do what you want.
I have the other Ford hood protector that is held on with hardware. Looks similar but the Super Duty is recessed like the hood. Much easier to install.
Clear wrap is the way to go
Looks really good but very frustrating an expensive piece of plastic cracked so easily. That’s frustrating but it looks good.
I put the weather tech one on my Tundra. It wasn’t hard to install. I was just sure to line it up about three times before I started peeling off the 3m tape. I love the looks and the way it mounts flush with the hood.
I know when putting stickers on work trucks we’d use a mixture of dawn and water in a spray bottle and spray the surface we’re applying to. It gave us time to position stickers and then sqeegi the excess out from underneath it.
OH NO! Time to trade it in! Lol. It does look good.
Yes that method is frustrating. I used another product that sets off the front for more deflection of bugs. What used to be a very firm product is now too flexible. Had to put some bumpers under the deflector as it was too flexible at speed and folded against the hood and corner pieces. I like the Ford version for looks. But I prefer a model that sits off the hood and throws bugs higher over the windshield.
Keep the videos coming!!
I’ve done this before. And I lost sleep over it. It’s really a two person job. But for being alone you did very well
I think that deflector looks good on your paint color. Definitely a 2-person job, though. Maybe even 3 depending on how flexible that middle is.
I like the ones that have a lip that goes under the hood and screws to some existing holes.
No worry, everything will be ok
Very nice, but I can see myself screwing it up, thank you for the DIY.🌞
A contoured smoke tint bug guard always looks great on a truck.
I strongly recommend Xpel paint protection film and suggest that you find an installer near you to at least film the front clip and the roof. It's not cheap but Xpel PPF can absorb an amazing amount of impact energy and it's well worth the cost.
Ouch, I feel your pain. I like the look. My truck is Rapid Red with the sports appearance package. It would good on mine too.
I think it looked better without. The front looks good with the grill blending as you said but it looks like the fenders need something. They look unfinished now. My opinion.
I would fit it the same as putting decals on. Align everything up using masking tape before taking tape off, also spray soapy water on bonnet so you can move it around prior to fixing into permanent position.
Absolutely beautiful bad ass truck damn
Absolutely beautiful bad ass truck dammmn 😍😍
Now you need the colored letters from TD Vinyl to accent the Super Duty on the bug deflector and the rear tailgate. Pick a color that matches the trailer or get a nice gray. Would look sharp. I got red for my 2022 F-350 to match the red on my Alliance Valor toy hauler. Still have to put them on the truck. Might have to find that release spray to clean the surfaces. I like the look of the deflector.
I was able to get a free tonneau cover from GM from all the points I got from buying my ‘24 Silverado 2500…worked out very well!
Looks great. I put one one all my trucks I’ve had.
It looks good on the truck. The Ford engineers need to come up with a better installation process. After seeing this I would probably do a unique vinyl wrap design and have it done professionally. Of course at a much higher cost!
I'm wondering if the same soap solution you use to install window film would help with an installation like this. That way you could float it into position and then press for it.
You got the highest trim-level truck. It is as good as it can be from the factory. Leave it alone, crap like this just cheapens it up. Love your videos tho. Thanks
It really looks great on the truck
Glad I saw this, in no way would I like the bug shield stuck to the hood itself. I liked the avs chrome style for the previous MY trucks, with 4-5 screw under the hood and you can still wash behind it.
I have one on my Iconic silver F450. It is a bear to do by yourself. I like mine.
They should've made the lettering inset to match the hood so that it lined up better.
The only problem with that is it will trap junk under the plastic, moisture will also be trapped under, and it's a smoked color on a white background. You can probably see it the junk accumulate after some time. Personally, I would have gone for a wrap or PPF, and yes, the wrap and / or PPF will contour to the letters on the hood. I see lots of problems with that plastic guard that will damage the hood of the truck over time, especially with the adhesive tape on the paint.
Prefer clear version to smoked. Good tip on sanding the edges.
I worked at Shelby American building the GT350s in 2011. There were a lot of body accessories that used 2 sided tape and adhesion promoter to help secure body accessories we would put on. You're right. That adhesion promoter is no joke. The trick I found was to peel just enough of the plastic backing back to be able to fold it over so there is a small piece sticking outside the edge on each section of tape. That is a little more forgiving and helps keep the accessory ever so slightly off the paint so the tape doesn't stick so quickly. Once you get it lined up, you can stick that small section of tape. Then, the small piece of plastic sticking out the side can be pulled, exposing the rest of that section of tape to the promoter. This is the only technique I've found that helps get it perfectly straight every time without the help of someone else.
I have a suggestion for installing accessories with 3m tape don't remove all the tape just peal back a corner and let it stick out the sides where you can pull off when the item is in place where you want in...try it sometime it works...
use the black pinstripe on the drivers side to cover the 1/8" white part
I think ford should make a clear one if they don’t already. Plus it would not show operator errors during installation.
A lot of money for a piece of plastic. (But I am just jealous because I can’t afford to buy a truck) 🤷♂️ love your videos and appreciate all the work that you put into them! 💕
I think it would look better painted white, or in clear.
It looks great. Know one will notice the 1/8” space.
Looks like a 2 person job.
I've used those on all my trucks. Great product!
My OCD would drive me crazy and I would have to redo it or take off some on the side that is overhanging. But that’s just me. It looks great though and is a great add on!
Looks great. I put the chrome version on my High Country. That adhesive stuff is a challenge. I had my wife help and I was off by about a 16th. I had paint protection film put on the entire front end day 1. Entire hood, front fenders, headlights, and bumper. White really shows the stone chips.
I have done that exact thing three times. It sucks because no one notice it but you and it will drive you crazy!!!!
I would like to see it with the hood up. Also need to paint the letters white.
Something that makes that front end look good to me
I think it looks nice on your truck. I took delivery of my F-250 with the hood deflector already installed and was part of the deal. I'm not too fond of the wrap they put on cars because they tend to peel and yellow after a couple of years in the sun . Nevertheless, yours is stunning. Keep up the mods
That looks great on that truck, plus will protect from rock chips. I wonder if one used paint stir sticks spaced across the top, and then pull one at a time would prevent the tape from making contact so you can position it where you want it?
I've only installed 3 of these. 2 on my trucks and 1 on the wifes explorer. The thing I did all 3 times is have her or a friend help me. 4 hands works wonders. Looks good though. I LOVE the look of them. Definitely looks better especially on white vehicles.
You are not supposed to remove the backing from all the tape during positioning. remove a piece 3-4 inches wide in the top middle and bottom middle. Position and the pull backing and push down from the edges to the center.
Looks good JD, but I think that's a 2 man job to put on! A extra pair of hands would be better help.
I like that one better..I bought the one from Ford without the super duty logo. Mine is plain plastic not shiny and yes…the edges are razor sharp.
I have same on my truck paint matched my hood visor
Looks like an afterthought. Matches the fender trim extensions.
Ford went cheap on the newer bug guards . I put a guard on our 2021 F-450 . The one for our year from ford is a clip and bolt on version that’s removable. I take it off 2 times a year when we detail and wax the truck . I’m sure you’re not the only one having install issues on this version .
My husband put one our truck and the first thing I said is that it looks like a mustache. lol. I get why it’s one there, but when I see it, mustache for trucks
Looks nice, but me being me, I'd remove it and replace it. It's a Princess and the Pea thing - the misalignment would bug me until I replaced it. But the video is a good warning to others who come after you with a Ford Truck that they will need to build some sort of guide or blocks or wedges to help with the placement so that one is done. Or anyone installing an adhesive-only bug guard, I guess.
Looks good
I watch alot of your videos , very good. I've got an 18 F350 in red, I did the same oem ford deflector then I added red superduty decals to it , also red decals on the fender badges, can't send a picture of it though
I’m surprised you didn’t touch up the paint speck. Sucks the job isn’t perfect
Definitely clear PPF, I PPF'd my entire truck except the roof!
The bug shield looks great.
Looks great! I like this one over the traditional bug deflector that is bolted on underneath hood. I'm curious if you are considering adding something to protect the grill (and radiator) while driving long distances? They make a mesh screen that covers the grill, and since I live in Florida, the love bugs can overwhelm the front of your truck in a matter of minutes.
Not impressed. I think it cheapens the look of a very expensive truck. I prefer a clean look with no decals or plastic add ons.
So remember I'm not saying it's your fault. But when we put one of these things on we literally only take a little bit of red film off the tape in the center. We also use three people to put one of these on. Also if you want to take it off a good hair dryer or a decent three level heat gun will actually take it off pretty easily or you can use 100% alcohol and a very small plastic fried tool. Good luck I honestly don't like these things I'd rather put the clear guard over and spend the time to heat it up and push it into all the letters.
I had the same problem, definitely a 2 man job. It does look great though!
Wood ceramic coating be better? Plus it should keep the whole truck cleaner and easier to clean
Love it!! Would not own a truck with out one!!
Would you have the hood wrapped when purchased. I think wrapping sections like the hood would help long term.
Put one on my 2020 f350 star white lariat and I love it. Took 2 of us to get it almost perfect
Use painters tape you probably need two people to put it on.
Bug Deflectors.
Ruining fuel mileage on trucks for decades.
Do you know how many hours the engineers spent in the wind tunnel getting that hood right?
My experience with tape. Sun and rain will ruin the tape over time. See if it's still there in a couple of years. I wouldn't put this on my truck.
O9 F350 Superduty had the best look, Hands down. these designs now are not truck look friendly. Fugly and all makes and models look alike.
Dry fit and mark it out with painters tape.
Is it transparent? How do you clean under it? The tape didn’t look to completely seal the edges. Up in the PNW it would be filthy underneath it after the first drive in the rain. Overall not a fan of the bug shields and do not think it adds to the look of the truck. If you like it is all that matters on your truck
I like the look but being off center is a no for me. Rip it off lol
Did JD use his one hand method 😀
Welll. Welllll...I see my truck I can't get in...😂...love parts..see should call me your white truck be shipped to Nashville TN ❤
Not a fan at all, I’d rather rock chips than ruin the way it looks(no rust thankfully). I would do PPF instead especially since you’ll still deal with rock chips on the fenders, fender flares and bumper. For some contrast, I’d add the tuffskinz “super duty” vinyl inserts to the hood(in chrome or brushed) to break up the sea of white. The protective quality of this is great but I couldn’t bring myself to protect it at the cost of the looks(sorry to whoever buys my trucks after me)
Would ceramic coating be better? Plus it should keep the whole truck cleaner and easier to clean
You should have left the lower tape on while positioning it, remove the tape as your still positioning it. Than remove the top tape from left to right while removing the tape..when you remove the whole tape, anything that touches will stick...😢
