Yeah, the AR15 is Now Becoming C&R Eligible

  • Given the status of the AR15 as the preeminent military rifle still today, it comes as a surprise to many people to learn just how old the gun really is. Civilian production of the SP-1 model by Colt actually began in 1964, which means that early SP-1 rifles started becoming Curio & Relic qualified back in 2014. Right now in 2017, more than 10,000 C&R AR15s exist - and this is one of them.

Like how they tried to ban M855 ammunition a couple of years ago, by labeling it "armor piercing" even though it was not? A T F agents were known to go into gun shops, & check all AR-15s in for service work to see if they had any one or more of the 6 (?) selective fire control components installed in them. (Selector shaft, trigger, hammer, bolt carrier, auto sear, auto sear pin) Mind you, all of the specialized parts had to be there, & an extra hole drilled in the receiver to accommodate the auto sear pin, before the rifle would actually be capable of full auto. There used to be a dedicated semi auto only bolt carrier, & if someone had instead installed the full auto bolt carrier in their AR-15, then there was hell to pay. Somewhere along the line, the A T F apparently changed their mind about using the full auto bolt carrier in a semi only rifle, but the other components are still probably taboo. I'm sure someone more familiar with the issue could expound on the topic.

And I am not quite sure if in 1972 a MP5 per Police Car (2 Officers) was standart back then. So you have an avarage Police Officer, trained only in pistol handling, best case trained on an MP5. Having carried one of these (M16A1) rifles around in the US Army, you are really noticing its good balance. Its center of gravity is near the middle which means it balances well on the magazine. Good balance aids in handling when you need to deploy it and also helps when you carry it around (which is what you really do with these things while in the service). :)

The story behind the large screw front take down pin.
The original Colt model 601(with their changes made from the original armalite rifle) had a removable front take down pin. After sending the 1st 10,000 rifles to Vietnam for the US military to test in 1961. The Army requested that that front take down pin be captive like the rear(along with other changes)but the Air Force did not. Then Colt then made the model 602 or xm16 for the AF(removable pin) and the 603 or xm16e1(captive pin) for the Army. In 1963-1967ish with finalizing of xm16e1 into the m16a1 it was decided that to make logistics easier to just bring the Air Force model to the A1 standard(minus the forward assist), making it the model 604 and the Air Force adopting it officially as the M16.
After their last run of 602s in 1963 Colt now had these expensive machines and forgings for the ARs that the military no longer wanted. Instead letting them go to waste they used the machines and made the Colt SP1 you see here, but with the front pin hole sized larger as insisted by the ATF to make them incompatible with their Machine gun counterparts.
So in short the Colt Sp1 receivers are made on machines the original m16 was made with.

It had Colt markings, the three prong flash suppressor, the birdcage came later.. No forward assist, although some bolts were serrated. The pins were all push pin. The selector had three positions, Safe, Semi and Auto. The magazine release button had the "fence". The buffer, I remember was heavy.
We always called the rifle, AR15. A year later we began seeing the forward assist in new rifles, we call those M16.

Off hand, I'd say guns are prohibited in Singapore, but that's not exactly right.
Possession of a firearm without a licence is a crime, and getting that licence is almost impossible. Self-protection is not good enough a reason.
Only authorized personnel are allowed to be armed, the Police, Auxiliary Security Guards, and security officers of VIPs.
The military turn in their arms at the end of the day to the armoury.
There is a small group of gun club members who own their guns, and their guns not allowed to leave the club premises.
So no one carries a gun here.
The penalty for possession of an illegal firearm is jail (min 5 years to 14 year max) plus flogging, at least 6 strokes of the cane..
Illegal guns get smuggled in though.
Replicas, pellet, BB guns, imitation, pipe guns, and any gun parts and accessories, are all restricted under the same laws, but their penalties are less than for the actual guns.
Still there are the occasional armed robbery.
The last murder by a gun in Singapore was in 2006. There are not many, and they are always sensational.

The forward assist has 2 uses. 1 to quietly rack a fresh round and push the bolt into battery. 2 to fuck up your day after getting dirt and mud in your gun and not washing it out.

I went into the Army in 1977, and during my four years there I was issued a few M-16s. The first was an Colt XM-16, then an M-16A1 that was a Harrington and Richardson with an M-203 attached, then another Colt M-16A1. Two of the three had chrome bolts and chrome bolt carriers, so it was still very common even up to the early 80's when the M-16 A2 started being produced.

Surprised you didn't know much about the pivot pin screw. They changed it to be the Colt Large Pivot Pin so that you couldn't just buy a M16 upper and attach it to a SP1 lower. The solution was to get an large to small pin adapter. Probably the most inconvenient portion of this lower when you want to switch uppers.

Having used an M-61A1 in service, I strongly disagree with the statement that the forward assist was unnecessary. The Air Force didn't use them because Air Force personnel rarely worked in environments where their weapons might get fouled with grit. In Army service, we did. I soon developed the habit of tapping the assist every time I loaded a magazine because, with all due respect to Mr. Stoner, that rifle was a bitch. Even when clean, the bolt didn't always lock into battery properly when the bolt release button was depressed, and when grit got into the action, all bets were off. And as for the contention that one should realize there's a problem and fix it... Only a moron would tear down their rifle and clean it in the middle of a firefight. Mr. Stoner didn't approve of the forward assist, but Mr. Stoner never had to use it in adverse conditions. And for all his genius, he wasn't above making bone-headed mistakes in his designs, especially when it came to that weapon. Mr. Stoner didn't think that it was necessary to chrome plate the firing chamber, and that very definitely was a poorly conceived idea that had disastrous consequences until it was corrected. It apparently never occurred to him that anyone would use ammunition that wasn't made to his exact specifications, and the troops that got the M-16 first were all issued ammunition with a gunpowder type that Stoner never meant to be fired in his rifle. If he'd just specified chrome plating in the first place, it wouldn't have mattered. But he didn't, and it did.

    • @larryfontenot9018
      @larryfontenot9018 7 лет назад +1

The feed on following rounds rarely failed to lock the bolt properly unless the weapon was fouled. I suspect that it was because when the bolt was being held open by the catch, the spring wasn't being fully compressed. On firing, the gas pressure on the bolt would fully compress the spring, giving it the required "oomph" to lock on the forward stroke. After the last round in the magazine was fired, the bolt catch would lock it open for the magazine change, and then you pressed the release to pick up a new round and -- in theory -- be ready to fire. It usually worked, but not always.
A minor problem, but minor problems like that get people killed because they have to pay attention to why their weapon isn't firing instead of the guy across the way whose weapon is working just fine. The charging handle on an M16A1 is one of the most awkward things to cycle ever put on a mass-produced service rifle. You can't just grab the handle and work the action with the weapon still on your shoulder like you can with most other weapons. Its placement on the top rear of the receiver prevents that. So you have to roll to one side, move the rifle to a position where your hand can reach the handle, and pull it back for an absurd distance. Unless you are in very good cover, you're probably wriggling enough to make a very tasty target for the opposition.
That's why I developed the habit of giving the forward assist a couple of taps with the heel of my hand after every magazine change; it made certain that the bolt was properly seated and locked. That way, I never had to worry that when I pulled the trigger, my M16A1 would refuse to fire because it wasn't locked. Maybe they corrected the buffer spring in later models. I have no idea because I was out of the service before any were adopted. But I know full well what the A1 was like, and all its little idiosyncrasies. That's why I can say with confidence that the forward assist was not only beneficial, it was a necessity. Stoner's opinion on the matter can be tossed in the rubbish bin where it belongs. If gun designers were always right, Borchardt's C-93 would have never been developed into the Luger P08. Borchardt was convinced that there was nothing wrong with his design either.

If memory serves, the problem that required the addition of a forward assist is the usage of fouling flake type gunpowder. Stoner designed the gun with a much cleaner burning ball type gunpowder, but the army had massive stores of flake type so that's what they used.

I know you did the mud test of an early AR-15/M16A1/SP-1 (please don't hate me for not getting it right) but what I'd like to see is the actual Vietnam malfunctions demonstrated. Some of the lesser ones like the rifle falling apart or parts breakage all the way up to that horrible extraction issue demonstrated in a hopefully safe manner. A way to visualize exactly what went wrong and how bad it was.

    • @neverknowsbest4994
      @neverknowsbest4994 7 лет назад +3

as far as i know the vietnam problems were just feed and extraction issues caused by a different pressure curve created by a powder that burned differently, to which the gas system of the AR was not designed to handle properly. either over gassing or undergassing, i forget exactly. but it could be easily represented by adding an adjustable gas block and just over or under gassing the system i believe. although if you wanted to be truly scientific it would be hard to EXACTLY replicate the pressures they had with such a test. short of having original surplus ammunition and a surplus rifle its hard to have a 1:1 representation.

    • @Angrymuscles

    • @Urbicide
      @Urbicide 5 лет назад

They did not chrome the chambers & barrels in the beginning of the Vietnam fiasco. Save those dollars! The chambers especially would corrode, & pits would form. The brass would flow into the pits when the round was fired, locking the shell casing in the chamber. Once the pits had developed, no amount of cleaning would alleviate the problem, only changing out the barrel for a new one.

The need for a forward assist is evident when I used to have to pull back on the charging handle while smacking the butt on the ground to remove a stuck case. To use the Mk 16A1 uppper that would have required an offset pin as the SP1 lower was designed to keep from using the FA upper After 1975 the parts started to be surplused out in large quantities. I started building AR's with all new 16 parts. FA fire groups were modified to prevent FA fire. I still have one that i built over 35 years ago. with all Colt parts except for the lower receiver. Builders today don't know what a luxury they have with the amount of tools and fixtures available to make assembly easier. Also the first SP1 t that I ever saw came in a standard brown cardboard military box that had Colt Commando and the rampant Colt logo printed on the top. Thanks for posting.

The only difference I see is mine had no forward assist. I had it on consignment at a local gun shop years later and shortly afterwards I got a knock on the door from a police officer holding it in hand asking me if I was the owner. Upon my declaration he quickly told me the local cop shop was interested in buying it. That was the easiest sale I ever made.

Mine is from 1967 and has the duck bill flash hider, no forward assist and a black phosphate smooth side Bolt Carrier. Ian says the one in the video has an M-16 A1 upper, yet it has the screws where the front take-down pin would interface with the lower.. and.. those holes on the SP-1 are larger in diameter than the holes on an M-16A1 upper AND lower.
Colt went to great lengths to ensure that the M16 Upper would be incompatible with the SP-1 lower and Vice-Versa, (including the over-sized screw holes) And, another distinguishing feature of the SP-1 was a high-shelf in the rear trigger pocket to prevent installing a select fire control group, plus The SP-1's Bolt carrier was "neutered". Meaning, it lacked to surface area on the underside that would trip the auto sear.
Based on what I see in the video, and based on my first hand experience in handling, shooting and researching the SP-1, as well as experience with modern ARs, ..What we are seeing in this video is an early 1967 lower, paired with either a late 1960's or early 1970's SP-1 upper.

      Also a gun noob here.
I quite often hear it being criticized when a gun does not have a reciprocating charging handle because you can't "help" the gun out if it doesn't go into battery. I think even on some of your mud-tests on inrange you pointed that out on guns that didn't go into battery.
Doesn't the forward assist essentially do the same as a reciprocating charging handle? I never heard anyone say anything negative about a reciprocating handle and always point it out as a negative when that feature is missing.
I am confused why people seem to always say reciprocating charging handles are a very important for serious "combat" style firearms (I think it was also a requirement on the SCAR project) but are so dismissive about the forward assist on the AR-15.

Others I came across were stamped/engraved "Fisher Body Company" also a division of GM. I can only recall a handful of "Colt's" M16A1s that I encountered either in CONUS or West Germany while I was stationed there. But then our 1911A1s and M3 submachine guns were all of WWII era production and had, like our Vietnam era M16s, M60s and M2 BHMs undergone any number of rebuilds at depot level by the time my generation came along.

I thought that the weighted buffers were to prevent "bolt carrier bounce" so the gun didnt exit battery and misfire when in full auto? They would essentially act as a dead-blow hammer.

This has nothing to do with being liberal. Sure it's neat but id rather not have my new old functional gun stolen out of my mailbox ready to fire.

Skyfox94 You have to sign for them... Something you cannot get around either. The package handlers just don't leave your gun on your door step...

Grandfather owned one. Now my dad owns it. It's a nice gun. One of the, splines? On the top of the triangle handguard is broken off. Otherwise, perfect condition, and it shoots very nice. And it's so light.

The forward assist was to put the bolt back in battery in the event the weapon had to be quietly loaded under ambush conditions . There is no way to charge without letting the bolt snap back into place. Which made unwanted noise .

Interesting channel, considering watching your clips and making comments. I like how you made a humorous ending with the official Uncle Sam's first plastic and metal artwork. Only if this had a 2 thumb icon for that. 😆 there should be more like this.

Reminds me of the time when VW Golfs became elegible for "historical" number plates in Germany... the only real change they made was enforce an already existing theoretical regulation much stricter, that a building date alone is not enough to qualify as historical car, you also need a minimal standard of originality (not overtuned with all OP switched out for third party gadgets) and show it's worth preserving through it's overall condition (so no rustbuckets per se). Not the worst requirement for something getting special treatment as collectible i'd say... and maybe a good idea for firearms in this C&R category too.

I know I’m late to this but there’s a fun fact/Story to the chrome bolt. At the time that the Air Force was getting these shipped through, many Marines would break these down to freak out the airmen cause they were told that their weapons would never be field stripped. Being told that due to at the time they thought “if it’s chrome it won’t jam” which is a reason why many upper receivers didn’t have a forward assists.

That thing that Stoner said about the forward assist makes sense. I was just thinking about that a few days ago.

If I was building my "dream AR", it would be in the SP1 pattern, but with 1:7" rifling for modern ammo, a small section of Picatinny rail up front for a light, and not much else. Such a rig would make a nice general-purpose rifle out to 300 meters (as the AR was intended to be).

The barrel is chrome lined, the bolt is chrome plated not lined. One good use for the forward assist is when you are in the bushes and the weeds and you get water in the barrel. You use the charging handle to open the breech part way and let the water out of the barrel then push it forward then use the forward assist to ensure the bolt is fully seated. I am old enough to have carried both an M16 and M16A1 during my time in the Army.

Hey Ian, love the videos and really appreciate the high output right now. I was wondering if you could do a video on the Russian ShKas aircraft machine gun. I've been looking for info on it and can't seem to find any videos. Anyway, keep up the good work!
