People saying the fl5 doesn’t have heated seats to save curb weight is pure copium. The reason it doesn’t have heated seats is because the integra type s exists and Honda wants a thing to separate the two cars 😂
Don’t even own a gas car anymore but I always liked the type r a lot and your videos always make it better to see the honest reviews about owning the vehicle.
Glad to hear that the markups for these cars have lessened in some places. Unfortunately, they are still very much an issue where I'm from, with the Type R going for over $60k and the Integra Type S nearing $80K. If they ever come back down to earth I would love to get my hands on one.
I love rewatching your type R videos since ordering mine. Going from newest to oldest is kind of funny knowing that you did tune this and yadda yadda and then going back to see where you said the opposite. We've all been there man lol "im not gonna mod it" then ope lol.
Super jealous of FL5 owners, but I have it's baby brother, the '22 Si, and in my favorite color, Orange! I've been thinking of grabbing a Hondata tune just to wake it up a little more. BUT the gas mileage in my Si is fantastic. I regularly get 40mpg on the highway in the summer. The highest I got was 45mpg on a Cleveland to Columbus drive, and that was doing 80 most of the way with a couple bursts of 90 here and there. Absolutely love this gen civic, they look fantastic.
Went to local dealer to get my car serviced other day and I saw 4 type rs sitting in the show room they didn’t even have the prices on any of them…didn’t even bother to ask how much they were marked up haha figured if they had more then 2 that gave me a good idea they couldn’t move any of them
I live in a small town in northern CA and there’s one here at my local Honda that’s been sitting for about a month… Makes me wonder what markup they have on it 😂
Dealers around me are marking up 15k. People just need to put their foot down and tell them know. Hurts them to keep sitting on those cars. Only reason they have the markups is so people don’t ask for more discounts.
You might be able to add a heated steering wheel. I have the dealer installed one on my Type S and it's great. It might fit on the Type R, worth looking into. Also, I hope you keep your son intact.
Love my FL5. Picked one up two weeks ago. It's everything my 2005 RSX-S wished it was back in the day. It's a riot to drive and I haven't even taken it above 5000 rpm yet. I can't imagine tuning it for more power, totally not needed. The way it handles is insane as well, the second the differential kicks in powering through a corner it's like the car locks on to train tracks.
As a fellow RSX owner. I would love to upgrade to either the CTR or ITS. A k20 turbo is the way to go. Unfortunately for me, both are out of my price range. So I would have to settle for the SI or Integra Aspec and lose the k20 spirit. Lol. I am struggling with deciding to get one of them and sell my RSX.
Really great review. You did a good job mentioning likes and dislikes without being biased. Your criticisms made alot of sense and you were able to make the points without being overly critical.
Great video! If I’m not mistaken many of the 10th and 11th gen Honda Civics infotainment uses a stripped down version of Google’s Android system as the base software and then overlay it with Honda specific vehicle software. The hardware used on the infotainment comes with insufficient RAM in comparison to what the system actually needs to function at full capacity. That probably attributes to the problem as well. Glad you were able to find a solution!
>many of the 10th and 11th gen Honda Civics infotainment uses a stripped down version of Google’s Android system as the base software and then overlay it with Honda specific vehicle software They definitely do, the app management screen he went to is 100% android. Kinda cool they still let you access some of the underlying os for stuff like this.
@@1anre it’s all about money. doesn’t matter who approved it as long as the profit margins make sense. Most consumers overlook this particular fault because you can plug in your phone and do wired apple carplay and android auto, so to some it’s not a dealbreaker. Honda has never prioritized tech, up until this new generation. There seems to be a shift, if you take a look at the new Accord hybrid, the new infotainment system is worlds ahead of their previous iterations because they are using Google’s android automotive, that include over the air updates. I imagine that’s the direction Honda will be headed with their in car tech.
@@1anrei wouldnt call an android infotainment system ‘technologically deficient’ by any means. As outlined in the video, its clear theres some performance issues in this implementation, but android is an incredible platform for integrated systems. kiosks, cash registers, infotainment, student laptops, tvs, and even some high end home appliances use it. android is entirely open source as well, so a capable software team can really make it work for the car, rather than just with it. additionally, its convenient because system updates can be performed remotely, rather than needing to take the car to a dealership to receive updated firmware. im sure that with slighly more system memory, the infotainment in this car would be very smooth and easy system to use.
This video appeared like magic for me as I'm contemplating to trade my manual Supra for one of these. After watching this video, I think I will be keeping the Supra. Chris , Congratulations on the expanding family. 🥳🥳🥳🥳 Are you already looking for a Grand Highlander XLE Hybrid on sensible 18" rims? 😉Getting back to the Type R, I wish it was shaped like a traditional hatchback rather than a lift back. The number of times Ive had to login to app manager to restart android auto... Glad to see the navy disable works. Regarding your carplay issue, Honda provided an OTA update last December for my 2022 civic which completely resolved all of the carplay issues. No more freezing, screen issues, lagging, everything is solved. Check for updates. It may come to the Type R later.

But honestly with all the other cars I’ve owned in the 50-60k range which is what some people are buying FL5s for, it isn’t worth it. C7 Corvette Z06, Supra, GT350, all cars I’ve owned around 50-60 and are miles better than a CTR.

Thanks for the review ! I picked up FL5 last night Sonic Gray Pearl. I really wanted a Championship White to match my Honda S2000(Red Interior), 370Z Nismo(White) and my 240Z(white) would have been perfect. But no regrets on the Sonic gray pearl because all the dealers were selling their Championship white with a dealer mark up between $5000-$20000! I have purchased the red seats from the 2023 Integra Type-S(Bought from a wrecked one) 6 months ago before buying my FL5, which I plan to retrofit for my Type-R. Worth Subscribing to TheTopher channel!
Love your videos. I also did the front resonator delete, type s ads module, and falken azenis on my type r. My only gripes with this car are the interior rattles and squeaks
Love my FK8 that I've had for 5 years now. I did go to view a new FL5 but after looking around, both interior and exterior I could see a LOT of the same/similar parts, from the door hinges, the rear bench seats, the roofline, the door seals & shapes, the handles, pretty much everything was identical other than the actual styling and the obvious dash/info update which was very nice actually. But hard to justify spending a whole bunch of money for what would be an almost identical product. Haven't come across a car in the price bracket that I thought would be worth swapping the FK8 out for since it's so fun to drive and it's so practical too. Best purchase I've ever made, and if I sold it now it would work out that I've only paid £1k per year in depreciation!!
Thank you for your reviews. I really enjoy them. I traded in a Si this week for new SGP Type-R for MSRP. Si is great and did everything I needed for the street, but decided to not pass up the opportunity to own the Type-R. It just feels “special”.
Love mine. Drove it on a 300 mile road trip to South jersey an back. Got about 34mpg. I'm on 18" Enkei with continental dws 06 plus. I need to do the type S mods next
Been watching for a while! Have appreciated hearing your thoughts on the FL5 and FK8. A buddy of mine just picked up a Boost Blue FL5 and I got to ride with him the other day on a majestic curvy road…thing is an absolute beast! Of course blows my EK9 out of the water but both are such awesome cars! If you’re ever in western NC let me know! ✌🏻
As a 2001 PY ITR owner I'd recommend that you: 1. position your finances such that you don't need to trade in your Civic Type R, when you buy that inevitable Odyssey. 2. start collecting plastic trim pieces, suspension parts, tune up parts, a replacement turbo, etc.... they won't be available in 25 years. 3. find a used set of seats and cover (UV) your existing seats.
Besides the additional cost, reduced storage capacity and rear-seat headroom, less amazing front seats, and no shiftlights, the other downside of the Type S vs the Type R is that Acura tuned it for a recommended 93 octane, which isn't available in California, or in many other states. The Type R was tuned for readily available 91. This is the primary reason behind the Type S's slight power advantage vs the Type R. Running the Type S on the Type R's 91 octane reduces the Acura's fuel mileage and power, never mind running it on 87 Regular, which the Type R can accept, albeit at a similar reduction in fuel mileage and power. This 93 octane requirement for the Type S really puts a damper on the idea of buying that car over the Type R for many of us in the western states.
when the all seasons wear out, look for all weather tires. there is a difference. for whatever reason, we have both in the US and the all seasons are comparatively garbage. in Europe their all seasons are equivalent to our all weathers. you'll know the difference with the 3 peak mountain snowflake logo. they will work a lot better in cold weather than what you currently have without sacrificing the summer performance. Oh, and nice Speedy!!! Looks like the Hesalite variant on the new bracelet. I had one of those too. Great watch.
This was one of the cars i was considering for a fun family hauler well the fk8 at the time. I looked into fk8, ISF, and ‘16 SS. ISF only had 4 seats so that was out, type r had 6MT and seats 5 but overall just maybe a bit too small for the car seat we were using and the stroller we had. The SS checked pretty much checked all the boxes 6mt, ls3, 4 doors, seats 5, and huge trunk. I wouldve loved to check out a m340i or GSF but none in my area in my price range. I love rewatching your type R videos since ordering mine. Going from newest to oldest is kind of funny knowing that you did tune this and yadda yadda and then going back to see where you said the opposite. We've all been there man lol "im not gonna mod it" then ope lol.
Thanks for the update. Unrelated, I'd love to see you do more in the future with ol Tedward. Love videos where Topher meets Tedward.
Only reason they have the markups is so people don’t ask for more discounts.
dealers funny as hell thinking this glorified civic is worth more than msrp😂
I'm buying a Type R very soon. Really appreciate your video!
Been with this car since day one! Been such a cool journey to watch you drive 🎉
Got DE5 a couple of weeks ago, as s2k and previous fk8 owner, I’m happy with my car
ND Miatas have heated seats and they weigh 2300lbs. No excuses.
They don't have bucket seats.
That car is like half the size 😂
The carplay troubleshoot guide… thanks man.
I was definitely bummed out with the weird issues I was having.
I owned an FK8 and now the DE5 Type S. I love the platform but I do miss the Type R seats!
Glad you were able to find a solution!
>many of the 10th and 11th gen Honda Civics infotainment uses a stripped down version of Google’s Android system as the base software and then overlay it with Honda specific vehicle software
They definitely do, the app management screen he went to is 100% android. Kinda cool they still let you access some of the underlying os for stuff like this.
Who approved such a technologically deficient decision ?
@dophelsinette you read where I said the stripped down varirnat used in the civic right?
This video spoke to me. Can’t wait to do these on the FL5 thanks a lot!
This video appeared like magic for me as I'm contemplating to trade my manual Supra for one of these. After watching this video, I think I will be keeping the Supra. People speak of the Type R as if its the most perfect vehicle ever created, but this video added a realistic view into ownership. Appreciate the videos as always Topher
ive been thinking the same, i really dont know if i should let go of the supra for one of these
@@leftright2 I'd say unless you need more than 2 seats, dont do it. But, I also think the manual will hold value pretty steadily, not sure if your'e running auto or not.
It’s not a premium interior that’s for sure. I don’t think it’s worth the doe just for this reason. I’d rather have a German car with a quality interior 🤷♂️
Great video! Congratulations with finally owning your dream car! And congratulations with a baby boy!
Great reviews as always man, you're videos helped me make the decision on my fe1
Si's are the unspoken gems of this car gen thatre budget friendly
GD, that honesty was BRUTAL!
For a car of this size, a squarer roof line would help accommodate taller adults.
The all seasons will get you where you want to go. San Diego to Montana in January with no issues. Held up like a champ through the Teton pass mountain roads with 12% grades.
on god we love the topher, proud of you, love all the vids congrats on the baby boy man
Your enthusiasm for the CTR really made me appreciate my Type S. There's only 1 car I consider an upgrade and it's a CT5 V Blackwing. You're right about driving in the winter. These aren't that fun in snow
dude, just download more RAM
😂
The number of times Ive had to login to app manager to restart android auto... Glad to see the navy disable works. Wish there was a way to change lights so interior could be ambient lit without exterior lights on and to change the melody played when the driver door closes.
Disagree about firmness of factory dampers, just my taste.
Nice video, I keep telling those who ask why Im at the supermarket, that the f in fl5 is for "family car" 😂
As someone that’s owned an 2023 civic si for a year and a month… I still enjoy driving it every day. 12k miles on here!
Love this car
Regarding your carplay issue, Honda provided an OTA update last December for my 2022 civic which completely resolved all of the carplay issues. No more freezing, screen issues, lagging, everything is solved. Check for updates. It may come to the Type R later.
Been waiting for this, awesome timing 😊
Thats an awesome car, sometimes I wish cars were accessible here in Brazil, the Type R barely came here by independent imports and the old ones are also hard to find and the price asked is above a common house price.. I'm barely able to keep my old 2000 civic that I bought with 200k km but its going strong. Honda makes great cars.
No tint ?
Nah, not for me
I've got an fc2 and I love it, the sound system has gotta be one of the best I've heard in all the cars I've driven, it even beats the custom jbl system I did in my old chevy. I'm really enjoying the vtec I've been thinking about doing a cold air intake and a turbo but I'm not sure cause I've only had the car a month now. I've also been thinking maybe I'll find like a type r 6 speed at a scrapyard cause the cvt it quite annoying. Civic gang
why not just get the 1.5t model then slap a tune
I love my 23 Elantra N ❤
It's the better car, handbrake and all.
@@evilcookiekiller I don't want to trigger anyone, but I just love this car the most in this segment. I think the exhaust was the hook, but the performance kept me entertained. The DCT is just insane
Elantra N is the jam
Owned 2 FK8s. Absolute best car you can buy for 30-35k. I’m a huge fan. But honestly with all the other cars I’ve owned in the 50-60k range which is what some people are buying FL5s for, it isn’t worth it. C7 Corvette Z06, Supra, GT350, all cars I’ve owned around 50-60 and are miles better than a CTR.
WIsh you could get one without the iPad stuck on the dash. Hate modern car interior design.
Never had anything Honda till I bought a 2016 civic lx 5 months ago and I love it, I’m wanting to get another civic and I’m thinking about getting the type r this time
I think for what it is the CTR is overpriced. A CTS4V Blackwing can be had for $64k and new CTR's with markups are very close to that number.
Plenty of folks have purchased at MSRP, myself included. That puts a nearly $20k gap between the FL5 and CT4VBW.
I guess the argument for that is reliability and fuel efficiency. Lol
MSRP is widely available now. Just order from low activity states and have it shipped to your door.
certainly over priced you can even see the harsh ride through this video
type r has always been a stiff car idk what you're expecting. also Michigan roads are basically a rally stage@@langraman8756
Love your ride! Big fan of FL5 and FK8.
What? I thought you said you had it for a year! You mean 2022?
There's no such thing as a 2022 Type R. He purchased the car in December 2022...
@@axledog7297yes in the video he incorrectly states he bought it in December 2023 and that’s what the commenter was pointing out.
As someone who's looking to buy one of these, this was helpful, thanks for your honest thoughts!
This review is helping me decide if I want to go this direction coming from Audi/VW products. So far I’m feeling good about making the switch based on what you said.
Thanks for the review I was planning on buying one of these in 15 years.
I bought a 1.5 manual 2024.
I now want this !!!
Something about the design of this car really appeases me i love how it looks
I might do the ITS damper module swamp that I learned from you. Suspension is a little stiff for an old (55) guy like me. 😊
Congrats!! I’d highly recommend the ITS damper module 👍
Love mine. Drove it on a 300 mile road trip to South jersey an back. Got about 34mpg.
I'm on 18" Enkei with continental dws 06 plus. I need to do the type S mods next
Type r is my dream car
Been watching for a while! Have appreciated hearing your thoughts on the FL5 and FK8. A buddy of mine just picked up a Boost Blue FL5 and I got to ride with him the other day on a majestic curvy road…thing is an absolute beast! Of course blows my EK9 out of the water but both are such awesome cars! If you’re ever in western NC let me know! ✌🏻
Better interior than I expected
Thanks for the tip on disabling nav. System is much smoother now.
As a 2001 PY ITR owner I'd recommend that you:
1. position your finances such that you don't need to trade in your Civic Type R, when you buy that inevitable Odyssey.
2. start collecting plastic trim pieces, suspension parts, tune up parts, a replacement turbo, etc.... they won't be available in 25 years.
3. find a used set of seats and cover (UV) your existing seats.
Nice I have a ‘22 Si and it’s been great. I’ve never had infotainment issues but that makes sense because the Si doesn’t have navigation
Ya dig
I have a 2023 CRV hybrid to haul my som in. Wish it was a civic type R lol. Living vicariously through you.
Topher has really changed my perspective on cars and I’m eager to learn A LOT from him. Maybe meeting him one day ❤😅
Yo love your content i love seeing how its like to be in such amazing cars and love to see a fellow MICHIGANDER doing it too.
I love the family-man commentary, especially about how the car seats fit 👍
white & black on the outside with red interior looks great
Besides the additional cost, reduced storage capacity and rear-seat headroom, less amazing front seats, and no shiftlights, the other downside of the Type S vs the Type R is that Acura tuned it for a recommended 93 octane, which isn't available in California, or in many other states.
Got it late 2022 , so far best daily and even camping in it without a hustle 👏🏼
I still drive the FK6. Excellent car so far. Honda is pretty great.
"It's not the same fun driving experience as the Veloster N..."
Thanks for acknowledging that.
when the all seasons wear out, look for all weather tires. there is a difference. for whatever reason, we have both in the US and the all seasons are comparatively garbage. in Europe their all seasons are equivalent to our all weathers. you'll know the difference with the 3 peak mountain snowflake logo. they will work a lot better in cold weather than what you currently have without sacrificing the summer performance.
Oh, and nice Speedy!!! Looks like the Hesalite variant on the new bracelet. I had one of those too. Great watch.
Congrats on the baby man.. I honestly liked the bigger wing but I'm also someone with a wrx so who knows lol
After I get the family mini van. Will be working for my dream car 😌🥹 I can’t wait !❤
Type r definitely looks like a fun car around corners, and would love to drive one someday. Congrats on the addition to your family.
