What are the origins of the Sardaukar?

Isn't their concept (i.e. a emperor's elite bodyguard unit) modelled on both the Roman Pretorian guards as well as the Ottoman Jannissaries? BTW Heavy Jannissaries in Medieval: Total War are one of the best units in that game.

The Sardaukar remind me a lot of the ethos of the Russian special forces, where they have violent hazings and brutal conditions under training in order to make them the "toughest" and therefore best fighters.
