  • Old Computers Won't Work on Windows 11 24H2
if you got a really old PC from before 2010, then you wont be able to use Windows 11 24H2 when its released in the fall, Windows 11 24H2 won't boot on unsupported hardware. It requires a CPU with SSE4a (AMD Barcelona or newer) or SSE4.2 (Intel Nehalem or newer). So even later Core 2 CPUs (Penryn) won't work because they max out at SSE4.1. Its all to do with the population count instruction (POPCNT) for short. thanks to TheBobPony @ / 1756771051634135277

It's absolutely ridiculous how many computers are going to end up in the landfill because of this. Most people don't want to use an alternative operating system. And windows is trying to force everyone on to Windows 11 using newer machines.

Of course they are! Micro$haft (Microsoft) wants to make as much money as possible by raising the demand for brand-new computers! You see, Micro$haft makes money every time a new PC that comes preinstalled with Windows 11 is built. That's because the PC manufacturers such as Dell, HP, and Lenovo will purchase Windows 11 OEM licenses whenever they build new PCs.

Honestly who cares if they're 15+ years old if they still meet some people's needs? Since 11 runs absolutely fine even on 2nd gen Intel CPUs it's clear the computers are still capable of running it but Microsoft just wants to make you buy a new computer because why not. Also, there are still modern Pentium processors that can only compete with a 13 year old i7 and still loose to it in some tasks so in that case,a 3rd and 4th gen high end CPU will still smash the budget CPU lineup for the upcoming years

To a large degree its because of Microsoft's incompetence over the decades in making their operating system secure. They kept adding on more and more stuff but never dropped back and started from scratch, basing it from the ground up on being secure. Heck, there's still old DOS 6.0 code in Windows even today. Jeez.
So instead of paying a bunch of cheap Indian programmers to "fix" Windows, they'd rather rely on the "crutch" of using a hardware fix for security. They don't CARE that it will cost you money instead of costing THEM money.

    • @scamdem1c

most likely just spyware related. they talked about using frame generation to make windows "lighter" and less demanding of computer resources, but they never talk about removing bloat and spyware. instead they just keep adding more. i remember back in the day where win2000, winXP and win7 where significantly lighter on your computer. now its different.
also they have been adding targeted adds and "news"(actually just distractions and propaganda) everywhere. i have a family member with win11 and there are adds and "news" everywhere. the average linux distro doesnt have that much bloat on it and you can optimize it for privacy and security. also less viruses too!

Even in the Linux world a lot of Distros stopped supporting older x86 hardware, you can still get Linux working on old hardware, DSL (Darn small linux) just released an update after a long time, I think it is based on AntiX with support for older computers and I think it still fits on a CD even for older computers. There reaches a point with older hardware, where it becomes a pain to do anything online , I was playing around with an old netbook the other day I found in a closet, with only a gig of ram and that thing choked on most modern webpages. The only reason it could even get online at all is because it had Linux on it.

I wouldn't use netbooks as a good example as those things were terrible, even for when they released. Personally, I think the oldest you can go back and have a relatively decent experience for web browsing is the Core2 era of processors. I've used a Core2Quad Q9550 with just basic windows 10 on it and you can do almost anything that you'd want to do on it. It's even better with Linux installed. Core2 Duos stretch it a bit, but higher end ones such as the E8500 work well enough.

Most older people do not like moving forward to new technology because at some point adapting to new stuff becomes more of a challenge to learn. When I was young, new tech was an exciting adventure, and I was eager to learn new ways of doing things that would make life "easier" or more "productive". However, as technology evolved and legacy data became more important requiring major backward compatibility to allow continued use of well-known systems, things felt like a great deal of upheaval and trouble to move with the times. I still am not too fond of the ribbon interface in Microsoft Office and find the older toolbars and menu system far more intuitive.
It would also be nice to be able to play well-loved games which ran on older platforms on newer hardware for a little retro relaxation. Obsolescence is a curse that comes with progress, and learning new technology becomes more of a chore than an exciting adventure. Computing used to be fun, but with complexity and progress it is now as dull as learning arithmetic was when we were at school.
Still, progress goes on and ultimately we have to learn to move with it.

I think it's less about progress and complexity, and more about not wanting to forget or relearn things you have already learned.
Someone new to computers isn't going to have a harder time with Linux than Windows. It's the 10+ year Windows veteran with skills and expectations due to thousands of hours of using Windows that will have a hard time with Linux.
The first time you have to learn anyway, and that can be fun. But you don't want to have to unlearn and relearn again after having gone through the effort once already.

The 800 lb. gorilla in the room is compatibility with Microsoft Office, which about 90% of the world has settled on as their standard for business communications.
So far those only run on Windows and Macs.
Then there are all the other "bread and butter" software that only runs on Windows or Macs like Adobe products.
The free Linux based ones simply can't compete with any of these paid for products on robustness or ease of use.
I run CAD/CAE software. It only runs on Windows. I'm stuck with Windows no matter how much I hate it.

@MichaelDustteryes, it is a wonder that "free, open source" software is as good as it is. But reality is that it just can't compete with a bunch of paid programmers and a company out to make a profit. Competition is a good thing.
Even so, I have heard many say that video editing is the most taxing thing you will ever do in "real-time" on your PC.
I run simulation software that is likely similar. It can offload some of the computations to the video card processor.
But my PC is pretty useless until those simulations are done.

Really not a big issue for old CPUs like Core 2 CPUs as those actually have a security flaw (same for AMD processors as there was a flaw that was identified in the instruction architecture I believe that both CPU mfrs used) so I wouldn't want to install it on anythng less than a modern Core i3 (perhaps 6th gen) CPU or AMD Ryzen 3000-series CPU anyway for performance reasons. And to be honest this is NOT really that different from how Apple handles legacy hardware. In some cases, they don't allow you to install newer OSes on some Macs if they are beyond a certain age (for example you cannot install Mac OS X on some or most laptops that are older than about 2014 Even if it technically could run it from a spec standpoint. Apple just doesn't support older configurations.).

When support ends and you still really want to stick with Windows 10, then make a system image backup on a external drive every week or two. If you get any problems with malware etc. then just restore from the image. This will return your system exactly back to before you had the issue. System Image is located in Backup and Restore in the Control Panel, then if you ever need to restore from the backup you can do so from Advanced Startup in the Recovery section in Update and Security. You can even do it by booting from a flash drive with the installation media you use to install Windows. Still worth doing this even with the latest OS and updates, probably the best anti-virus contingency there is.

It's firstly about providing a way to migrate their old OS to a container where they can then /safely/ run their old OS on top of Linux in virtualization, then its about providing ways to migrate folks' apps & data out of the container via native ports or via wine, and then finally it's about providing folks a pathway to convert their data over to use fully native apps.

"Why don't you get rid of all those computers and just do it all on one?"? There are several reasons for that involving safeguards like redundancy (Although, dedicated for one purpose if another system breaks you can utilize the other.), ease of use (Different activities on different machines makes choosing settings easier and avoids time-consuming choices of space allocation, directory structure, and prioritizing resources.), and avoiding abandoned utility. For example, I have a laptop that while old can still support some browsers. If a problem arises on my desktop computer I can let the system stay where it's at in terms of activity (i.e. stay in the same window or on the same tab, or stilling running an app) while I search for the most prudent next move from resources on the Web using the old laptop. There are other reasons as well involving economic and environmental aspects, but I'm sure you're already getting feedback from different perspectives on them.

Many people total computing requirements are satisfied by being able to run a modern web browser. That can be on a PC or a smart phone. The reason so many people are still using PCs is simply the comfort of the form factor - a large screen that they can read (more) easily and a full sized keyboard/mouse for more comfortable interaction.
Old hardware is perfectly capable for these people. The OS is then just the launcher for the browser so who needs Win11 especially when Microsoft keep playing with the user interface making it less familiar and more confusing to many users than Linux Mint or Zorin OS would be.
Added to that, Windows is becoming an advertisement delivery platform to bombard people with information they don't want and didn't ask for. No wonder people still fall for pop-up scams. They've been trained by Microsoft to accept that stuff will just appear on the screen unbidden.

Not defending Microsoft, but a PC that old would really struggle to run Windows 11 with all the bloat that OS has anyway. It would be a constant battle of turning off background services, keeping junk from downloading/uploading in the background, and regular running of your favorite de-bloat scripts just to keep it usable.
Even some Linux distros may feel sluggish on a PC that old too depending on what you have running on there. There does come a time when older hardware will struggle with things like web browsing, email, and office work when the apps for those things keep getting bigger and more resource intensive (it also doesn't help that many websites do a lot more nowadays too). While those tasks can be done on a 14 year old PC just fine today, you may start seeing some slowdown somewhere depending on what you have going on with the PC at the time as we move forward.
How far this performance hit goes and how far you can take older hardware today, I don't know. There's a LOT of variables to consider, and sometimes it does just make more sense to get new hardware and transfer data to a new PC before old hardware fails...for being old.
As for Linux alternatives, with Mint, get the MATE or Xfce edition. Those two editions are lighter on system resources and better for running on older hardware where as Cinnamon is a little more top heavy (but not much more).

It's Microsoft decision. If you don't have a supported CPU, use Windows 10 until it breaks or switch to a Linux distro.

They've done this before - I have an old pc running win 7, when win 10 first came out, I converted to win 10, but changed my mind, made it into a VM, switched back. Point is, it did run win 10. At some point, they changed things so that it would not boot win 10. Intel 920, ASUS P6Tv2.
Currently use only to operated Blu-ray writer.

Do not forget that huge organisations and enterprises continue to use Windows 7 at their desktops as their local nets are protected from powerfull hardware firewalls and servers.
47% of desktop users use Windows 7, 26% use Windows 10 (after serius debloating and customizing) and only 3~5% use Windows 11 (because of new purcases) !
MS support mean nothing if your system works fine . Maybe we have problems with new stuff drivers in some cases in the future , but that not means that today operatinal apps will stop working...
Even more i think that will be good that MS will stop to change thinks on our pcs and brake thinks .
Windows 11 are semifiniched project and have a lot of bugs and issues out of the box. For this reason I don`t recomend them at all.
TPM approved vulnarable and the increase of telemetry destroy our privacy , so the "security" became worst in Windows 11 than it was in Windows 10 and Windows 7.
Linux OS are good for comunications bat became nightmare when you try to use them for video-photo-disign-animation editing as many drivers do not exist....
Windows NT is almost 10 years old and Linux is 20 years old . With the speeds that technology grow up these OS are too old and must be changed if we want to use the latest CPUs and GPUs efficiently.
The support of Windows 10 will continued until 2029 at least (Windows 10x64 Enterprise LTSC). Until then our pcs will payback their own cost and Windows 11 will fix their issues.

Windows NT is almost 30 years old. Windows NT 3.51/4.0 is the oldest NT kernel based version of windows. It can out at around the same time as windows 98 and it has not really improved a great deal since. Every version of windows starting from windows NT is just an extension of the windows NT kernel with a new shell or things added or removed from the operating system.

I installed, on a brand-new hp pro-book, Linux mint 8 "Helena" in 2010. Always followed the upgrade 3 months after the release date. Now I'm using mint 21 and changed ram memory from 4 to 16 GB. doing a bit of video with kdlive, dj'ing with mixxx, etc. I pulled my card to do donations, never by force!

Bro if you're on CPUs as old as 2008/2009 you have other things to worry about than running windows 11.

It sucks that my old Sony Vaio cant run linux because it needs so many proprietary drivers to work. 😢
