- This 2007 Ford S-Max came in with the Handbrake mechanism sticking on. The owner bought a new lever mechanism & I had the joy of changing it. Enjoy :)
Here is a link to a cable repair kit for this mechanism amzn.to/2V9xBOo and a video how to fit it here. • Ford S-Max Galaxy Hand...

Thanks for a really helpful video. Would never have found some of those retaining screws. One thing I would point out to people is if you have snapped the handle release cable don't buy the whole mechanism from Ford. They will charge in excess of £200 for the part and you can double that if you want it fitted. I bought an x8r cable for £35 and using this video along side theirs worked a treat. You won't need to get under the vehicle at all. Follow this video to take all the interior trim apart and then watch the x8r video to replace and fit their improved cable which can be done in situ. Took my dad and I about 3 hours with a tea break.
Yes the X8R guys asked my permission to use this video. I only wish their repair cable was available at the time I recorded it. Thanks for you feedback.
Where would I buy the replacement cable???
?
Spot on. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Super useful when replacing the handbrake release cable.
Damn Rob, I've never seen so many screws holding a console together. And that parking brake assembly was huge and complicated looking. When I saw all this, I figured that Ford called the German engineers for help on this design :) Good one Rob...
There's definitely some German engineers involved in that thing 😂 It reminds me of some sort of aircraft control!!
Great video, I have 2 Smax's and one now has covered 203000 miles. It needed the handbrake replacement when the cable wore out. To be honest I can't complain, it's on original engine, turbo, injectors, clutch, DMF, PDF. It's been serviced every 12500 miles and I think it will comfortably do a quarter of a million miles
i almost couldn't watch this video! I've had enough of removing trim and bits to get to other bits the last couple of days. haha nice work
Yeah I bet 😂😂
What a great channel, really glad I found it. Loads of great videos on here
Daniel Z Thank you sir, welcome 🍻
Bravo cool vid. Well explained and detailed. Just did mine today at 200800 miles. Ford galaxy 2.0 tdci.
Thanks mate.
I've had the exact same problem last night. Great video with all the info I need and more. Would love to see more smax/galaxy videos. Like how to swap the air direction control cable? 😉
Thank u very much for this Video... Searched for a Long time
S max rules!
Makes VW & Audi center consoles look like a breeze!
When you first showed the handbrake mechanism... I was like WTF!!?? But once I saw how it looks & works in the car, it's actually kind of a nice setup... a huge pain to re & re... but a nice looking setup.
Yes it reminds me of some sort of aircraft lever. I was staggered at the amount of screws I had to take out! But at least no electronics to do wrong. Have a good weekend Thomas
HAHA this job teaches you patience but there's always editing. Nice video Rob!!
Cheers mate, it was a ball ache to change!
Great video rob thanks for sharing this
Cheers 🍻
Great video. Thanks for your time much appreciated
Thank you for the instructions, it helped me a lot to make the replacement by myself.
excellent video, however my handbrake works, its just the wire from the release button has snapped. I cannot see where it should go? do i need a whole unit?
Hi Michael, buy a cable repair kit here. amzn.to/2V9xBOo And watch the video how to fit it here. ruclips.net/video/N56FtsM8Yy4/видео.html 👍
great video , big help as i got one exactly same to do soon cheers
How much did it cost ? This, parts and labour ?
Oh Christ I thought that part that went over the shifter looked like a pot pipe lol. Sorry my mind is always in the gutter . Love your vids and the fact that you use the autel . I just got the the same one I fu!!!!! Love it. I'm in Philly Pennsylvania. More autel use any tricks you know would appreciate thanks
another great video
Cheers 🍻
That was a hell of a lot of disassembly to get to that. With the crack in the trim housing and missing heat shield do you think someone had been trying to rectify before bringing it to you?
Someone had definitely been there before, maybe for the same thing. The heat shield had just corroded around the fixings cause the fixings were still there. I know what I'm up against for next time 👍
Great video!
Thanks dude.
Hi is it same for a galaxy?
Love the seat covers :P....soft nylon, maybe it's just the weirdo in me but they do look a bit uncanny. However, it helps protect the investment when selling the car, I get that :)
Ola puedes subir un video de como ajustar los cables de la caja de cambios ford s max 2006
God jobb 😊 tusen takk
Nice job Rob! Do you have videó about Ford S-max stuck panoramic curtain? Thanks
Csaba Szerdi Sorry no
Grazie!! Tutorial fantastico!!
Lots of standard transmissions over in england. In canada its rare for someone to buy one compared to all the automatics. Most manufacturers don't even offer a standard gearbox except the small cars. Do most drive standards in england. HAHA I never used my park brake in 40 years. LOL
Yes Steve most are manual transmissions here. But you guys get the big gas guzzlers that are a smoother drive with an auto. We have auto's in the bigger engines but not much over the 3 litre mark. Do you need a parking brake for an Inspection?
One Auto, Ford don't sell manual versions of the Focus or Mondeo here anymore 😭
Jeeez....I'm facing this monster job simply because the tiny spring that operates the ratchet has broken!!
What's typical cost of supply and fit
be careful if you take out anymore bolts the engine make Fallout lol
I know what happened to the ones where you took 2 screws out of the back & slid it backwards!
I would have given up after Step 3 and used wedges against the tires instead.
Rob how long did that job take you
It should take about 2 hours... filming it at the same time, setting up all the shots etc took about 4 hours!
One Auto, thanks for the reply 👍 look forward to the next one ☝️
Engineers sure don't think of these things having to be taken apart after installation do they?
Nope they love to bury things Lol
Its not the engineers you worry about .. its the accountants. Or as the late great and rather eloquent Mr. Zappa said 'the MBAs concept of numerical reality'.
did you find out what was wrong with the original one
No. The cables do fail though. X8R do a repair kit. There’s a link in the description
I don't know what it is about ford dashboards with all the screws in them. It must cost a significant amount of money (in mass production terms) to pay a bloke to put all those screws in at the factory when you could use a few bolts and some plastic clips for less money and assemble it in a fraction of the time.
Haha yes and it costs a significant amount of money to pay this bloke to pull all those screws out 😂 Unnecessary Ford!!
Next time just spray it with some WD40 😂
Thank you
whats the book time on this?
Muchas gracias
How long did it actually take?
About 2 hours
Another great job, but looked a nightmare.
Thanks, yeah a bit involved but should be easier next time now I've done one.
in 3 seconds...FIXED! (ha ha) Thumbs up but now I have to go to work. :)
Haha Cheers Wyatt :)
Looks more like a throttle level off an aeroplane.
Yes I thought that the first time I saw one
Thanks
thumbs up from me.
Thanks Andrew 🍻
i would be happy to work for you but i am not in england
Ahh yes, you want to change the parking brake mechanism? Ok I just need to disassemble your entire car. I estimate the job with VAT will be about £120 parts and £900 labour. On the up side, if we remove all the surplus Torx screws, the vehicle will gain 15bhp and 12 mpg. Now I feel your pain!! :)
I got frustrated with the amount of screws and I'm only watching a video
Dankeschönnnnn
8:20 made me laugh
I will never buy ford car again, I drive now s max 2012,
Can’t u just treat the cable with cleaner and lube it ? It’s such a hassle to replace this handbrake thingy
Of course if you can get to it but this was jamming at the quadrant & pawl see 11:58 The customer wanted to replace the lot.
Another stupid handbrake design! What is wrong with these car manufacturers. If it's not broken don't fix it!
It's a fashion thing I reckon
The Vauxhall Zafira has also got this ridiculous setup! Fingers crossed this trend doesn't continue.
my corsa has a classic handbrake its not one of these or one with a steep aplied rotation, like off is horizontal, on hard is 45 degrees, some are near vertical
Martin Cooper If it's near vertical, Then it needs adjusting! So glad my current car hasn't got an electronic piece of crap either.
not what i meant, its the long handle , short handle ones rotate. its hard to explain
