Something I'd like to clarify a bit better:
I know I used America as the prime example for poor food portions and regulations, but quite a few of the points apply to many other countries as well.
For example, there are many food dyes that are actually BANNED from food in the USA that are allowed in Europe. E124, a synthetic red food dye linked to exacerbating ADHD problems in kids, is banned in the United States, but not in Europe. Quinoline Yellow, another food dye that can cause allergic reactions/skin rashes, is also banned in the USA, but not Europe.
The point is that much of these chemicals, preservatives, and additives have infiltrated our food everywhere. And it's important to protect yourself by checking ingredients, and being mindful of what you eat as much as possible.

I'm French and German. Here in Europe you will still get fat if you countinue your high fat, salt and sugar diet. It's true that, in european countries high processed food have less ingredients, but you will be still fat even if you are working in a job, where you must move a lot.
Some canned food like tomatos are even imported from China, but labeled as italian, where a lot pesticides are used. After the EU regulations, it's legal to do this, since the laste step is putting the giants can of mixed tomatoes in the can and that happaned in Italy.
The best diet is to reduce the consumption of processed food and to learn how to cook.

He stated that he learned the word for large BECAUSE he knew that the small portions would leave him hungry. But even your guys large is our small regardless if you all eat to 80% fullness. You said that those portions were ENOUGH for adults that’s not how American think, we don’t eat for ENOUGH food we eat until we feel physically sick and a lot of us don’t know the difference between ENOUGH and stuffed.

Few Japanese people are likely to consciously practice the concept of *hara hachibu* (eating until 80% full), but I believe cultural influences are at play. Being accustomed to eating moderate portions likely reduces the preference for oversized servings. Conversely, if one regularly consumes oversized portions, it may lead to the body adapting to require more, creating a vicious cycle where one becomes increasingly dependent on larger sizes.

Try cutting out all processed food and stick to mostly grass fed animal products and organic vegetables. Make sure to get enought magnesium, zinc, D3, K2 and Fish oil. Eat organic beef liver once a week. You can also take hydrosylated collagen, glutamine and some probiotics. I make my own l.reuteri yoghurt. Eat a lot of fermented foods. So if you eat vegetables stick to kimchi, sauerkraut and if you eat grains at all stick to sour dough bread. I've turned my health around 180° by doing this and healed autoimmune diseases I have had. Not only that suddenly I lose weight and build muscle which I was unable to do before despite me counting calories and training. Yes I could lose some and build some muscile but it was marginal. Now it feels like I'm on steroids or something. Morning woods came back hitting me like a freight train, I wake up 3-4 times a night because of them. I'm 36 now and started 2 years ago. It is never too late. With everything I mentioned above you even have a high chance to cure cancer if you have it already though you'd have to go some steps further in making a long waterfast and then eating zero carbs for some months.
Some other helpful supplements are taurine, selenium, boron and iodine.

My mom and step dad are morbidly obese. I have watched them go through fad diet after fad diet, one of which was so extreme that it limited them to only 500 calories a day and had them taking "pregnancy hormone" drops by mouth, claiming that the HORMONE was what facilitated the weight loss. They both lost 100 pounds on that diet in the span of 6 months, and the moment they stopped eating specifically what the diet guide book told them to, they went back to pizza, greasy wings, high-fat and high-calorie foods on a daily basis. They are both back at the weight they started at, and no matter how many times I tell them that going on a diet is stupid and that they should be making informed decisions on altering their daily dietary patterns, they still go to the extremes. My step dad got gastric sleeve surgery 4 years ago to reduce his stomach size and he has lost no weight as a result, and my mom just sent my wife and I home with 5 pounds of various types of bread because she "realized that it's the carbs that are making her fat." But the 10,000 calories of snack foods within arms reach of them while lounging in the living room for the entire evening has nothing to do with it.
Meanwhile, I constantly struggle to find foods that don't have sucralose and artificial coloring in them if I'm shopping anywhere other than Aldi, and even them I'm occasionally surprised to find one of those two on the ingredients list. Like why the fuck does every flavor of Shasta soda have sucralose in it, despite already having sugar as the main ingredient? Why do we need to make the sweet thing even sweeter ARTIFICIALLY?

People talk about portion sizes, but packaging is also enourmous. In Europe, most food comes in 100 g packages and you use that to feed several people or last several times. Which is about 3.5 ounces. When you get huge packaging, you end up using more because you are serving yourself as a share of the packaging. Also in Europe they will say xxx calories per 100 g, so if you have a 100 g package and eat half the package or a third, you can easily calculate the calories, but in the USA, they will say something like xxx calorie per 7 peanuts. It makes it impossible to understand how many calories you would be consuming by just looking at the package in the store. It makes people give up and just overeat without being conscious.

Even as an alcoholic, my weight never got above 145 (I’m 5’6). I’m also severely disabled and cannot work.
    The habits I have are:
No added sugars, once a week treats are allowed by day to day I consume none.
Walking most days of the week for an hour.
Doing small amounts of lifting, most days of the week
Eating veggies with my meals, and eating fruits, seeds, and cheese, as my main snacks
I still eat to many carbs but I bake my own bread using a bread machine. I found I got migraines from store bought breads.
    Habits I see others have:
Consuming huge main portions with few veggies
    Not eating whole grains
    Not consuming enough fiber
    Eating fast food
Unfortunately, I have a disease that means that my daily walks and cooking are literally all I can do. But I feel so much better when I eat and move as much as I feasibly can.
I used to eat tons of added sugar and few actual meals. I lost a bunch of weight rapidly when I quit drinking, and my immune system tanked. I developed a yeast infection in my mouth, throat, stomach and intestines. It was crippling and I vomited daily for months. I finally quit consuming sugar, focused on Whole Foods, gained a little weight back, because when I first took antifungals the infection came right back. Now it’s been gone for months!

I was experiencing a lot of health problems and weight gain. Doctor just wanted to give various meds to adress the symptoms. I ended up doing an elimination diet over the course of six months - not with the intention of losing weight, but just to see if I was eating anything that was contributing to my joint/foot pain, exhaustion, and skin issues. Started out eating just red meat, and immediately (two weeks or so) the debilitating pain in my feet that was preventing me from walking in the morning, stopped. I hadn't lost weight at that point, but the pain was gone. Joint pain followed soon after and my skin gradually cleared up. Started introducing other foods and didn't see any problems with veggies, dairy, seafood, but BOOM... Processed seed oils. All my joint and foot pain started up again. Extra virgin olive oil is okay, and I've been playing with avocado oil recently, but for the most part, I stick with butter, ghee and animal fats for cooking.
Result of the elimination diet had me reducing grains, avoiding added sugar in foods that had no need of them, cutting out "vegetable" oils entirely, and I feel better now than I did in my twenties, plus am down 80 pounds without calorie restrictions. I pretty much can eat what I want, but I do need to do most of my own cooking and a LOT of label reading. Processed foods are almost impossible.

Yep at its core cancer is caused by the degradation of ADN in the long term preventing a cell from auto repairing any possible mutation that leads to a cancer cell. Although ADN regenerations slows down with age I bet all of these chemicals and substances might accelerate this process but since we don't have the technology to see ADN damage in real time we wouldn't be able for now to precisely say which substance or chemicals causes this ADN damage.

There's a lot to talk about here, but at minimum food dye needs to be banned. No one needs their food to be brightly colored at the cost of cancer.
But also, car dependence kills walkability, which is the easiest and most accessible form of exercise. I walk about an hour a day as a non-driver and I eat whatever I want and don't gain weight. Without that walking I'd be fat. Most people in the US simply don't get enough exercise because all natural exercise has been replaced by driving cars everywhere. Not Just Bikes is right. Portions in Russia are smaller than in the US (naturally), but the food is FILLING you, not just stuffing. We always struggle to stay fit and healthy looking in the States - and it's not just food, but the quality of lifestyle. Car dependency is killing us. This is utterly ridiculous that you absolutely need a car to survive and participate in society. Sometimes it feels like you live in the US only to pay fees, taxes and service your car since cities were build (well, to be truly correct, plowed down) for cars and papa ford motors industry. As for food...Men, the food here sucks. We don't eat store bought bread, deli meats, frozen foods, ultra processed food. And still! My hair gets greasy every day, my face is constantly breaking out. I am tired of this. Constantly sore back due to lack of mobility, poor skin and nails condition unless you want to drive even more and spend more money and time to find "organic" food which can be found in any neighborhood store abroad at one place in walking distance. Honestly, my quality of life has decreased since I moved to the US. (and prior to that I was living in Thailand for some time). I might be able to buy a lot of unnecessary shite for $100, but the quality is still poor. I might afford to spend $50 for services, but the quality is terrible and there is no pride in any work in the US anymore - all they want is tips. I am working on my way out. Normally I try to shop the outside aisles of the supermarket as a rule in Canada. That’s where the produce, Dairy and Meats tend to be that are locally sourced. Even our grains I try to buy the stuff baked in house. It’s also interesting because in Canada many foods are not allowed to be made with HFCS.

Going to be a nerd momentarily but Dungeon Meshi really communicated to me the mindset needed for a healthy relationship with food. To really sit and appreciate a meal and what goes into it (often best done by DIY) instead of mindlessly scoffing it down is a good start..
As a fairly broke person my tips include:
*Frozen veggies are great, often have sales, most nutrients, longer lasting...
*Herbs are fairly easy to take care of IMO, I have a few just sitting on my porch in pots. I'm also planning to look into low maintenance things to grow, so that may be a good idea for others.
*Be willing to shop around 2 or even 3 stores if you have the time
*See what your library offers. Ones in my county have a seed library and some nutrition classes. Also some exercise classes for free. Remember, if you don't wanna be a gym rat you don't gotta be, so keep it simple but consistent. I like to jog, walk nature trails, and stretch to support both.
*Meal planning is really king. But what is queen is to figure out what your pantry staples should be. Lots of guides out there.

After several months back in the US, she'd returned to her prior weight.
What caused it? She went in the summer. Southern Japan, where Tokyo is located, is ungodly hot and humid in the summer. It's like 95 degrees with freakishly high humidity every day. It's even hot when it rains! As a result of all that, it's very difficult to actually do things outdoors. My portfolio is rounding up to almost a million and I have realized that when a stock makes it to the news, chances are you're quite late to the party, the idea is to get in early on blue chips before it becomes public. There are lots of life changing opportunities in the market, and maximize it.

Great video, here in Canada we have a number of the same dyes and high sugar foods as well; same with the car-centered places rather than walkable cities. The thing that really stands out to me around food & exercise is how they have been added to the "productivity" rhetoric. Fast Food, gym exercise as a symbol of "success," whereas elsewhere in the world the lifestyle itself is based on balance. Maybe there are lessons we can take from that concept that go beyond "what" and focus on "how".

I could technically walk to my job every day if I wanted to, but it would take 3+ hours on foot or 10 minutes by car. The state I live in is a quarter the size of Europe alone.

This video is great!! Once I hit middle school and my mom stopped cooking like she had been because she had to start working, I got highly addicted and accustomed to ultra-processed high sugar and high fat foods!!
It became a nightmare as I saw my weight increase and I started to feel terrible: back pain and tired, many times even lethargic, ALL the time!!!
It was a years-long fight to get myself unaddicted to the foods that made up my terrible diet (and probably would have let to diabetes which is in my family) and finally get my weight down AND maintain it.
I DID fall for some fad diets along the way (low carb high fat, keto, zero-moderation styles). I'm glad that I finally was able to work my way to a more balanced whole foods and moderate approach to eating that FINALLY gave me my life back and better control over my health.
I'm not perfect, but my weight is normal again, my back pain has massively subsided, and I no longer get lethargic during the day!!

I dislike the cultural framing around car dependent infrastructure being something that's uniquely American. It's more a question of timing of development. Boston for example is about as American as you can get and it's walkable, because of when it was built. And guess what, Americans love it. Nobody visits New England and goes "the towns were nice but I wish I had to drive more." Meanwhile you go to Australia and Asia and you'll find the same car dependent nightmare sprawl in cities that were built during the 20th Century. If Europe wasn't built out before the industrial revolution I can guarantee you there would be suburban sprawl there too.

The thing about grains is they have actually singe-handedly lifted people out of starvation and famine. And back in the day when we ate less super-refined white grains, there were a lot more nutrients in the grains and grain products, as well as in the soil to grow them.
But through centuries of trying to cut agricultural costs, make labour easier, cut food waste, we've leeched out most of the nutrients in the end-product. We've genetically-modified the grains to be more cost-effective and sweet, but less nutritious and worse for our health. Harder on our digestive systems.

How about the Formula? Sunlight (UV Light) + Cholesterol + Human skin = Vitamin D

Canada has car centric cities too, the difference from the US is that we aren't afraid we're gonna get shot when we leave our house and outdoor recreation is very much a part of our culture. it's always "go on an after dinner walk" or "go skiing/hiking/ice skating/make a snow fort and have a snowball fight etc. etc." the US is really its own entity, you couldn't pay me to go live there. it's sad.

"Get outdoors" in the cities. Okay. With one of the highest homeless and gurD problems from sky-high cost of living, inept governing. Pollution and poverty increasing, crime increasing.

From Finland and I still don’t have a drivers license even though I’m almost 30 years old. (I notice my privilege in this bc I don’t have children and I don’t live in the countryside) The public transport system and walking/ biking to places has been just enough and I’m so so so thankful about it. I would be devastated if I lived in a place where I couldn’t do that, because when I don’t have the time nor finances to go to gym or do other exercise, at least I can always put in my headphones, listen to something and just go for a long walk.
I think I might get my drivers license in the future only when my parents get so old they aren’t able to drive by themselves anymore.
Tho I have no desires owning a car ever. Such an expensive hassle.

It’s really so simple. Eat vegetables, fruits, legumes, lean/low saturated fat proteins (soy, eggs, farmed seafood, local fresh catch, chicken, Turkey), nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Leave the treats and sugar for a 20% of your diet and just cook and season your food well. It’s truly not hard - like there are so many delicious tasty dishes that are easy to make.

The science to support saturated fats being bad is itself pretty bad tbh.

You're right. It's not hard at all. BUT to actually go through with it, that's a whole other story. WAY easier said than done for the average person struggling with their diet.

And lots of meat. Especially organ meats.
      And lots of eggs.
And saturated fats aren't bad for you by the way.
