You are actually one of my mountain biking idols and one of the people that have influenced my passion for mountain biking that I'd love to someday meet in person!!!
Daaaaammmmmn dude! I had butterflies in my stomach just watching that! I could not comprehend how fast you were going down those trails, that was ridiculous. Also props on putting in the work on the long climbs. You are a seriously skilled rider, it's great to learn from you. Thanks for posting all these videos!
This was my first ride actually using it, It saved my ass at least once out there but none of the trail names showed up so it was a still a lot of guessing. :/
This is sick! Cant wait to start riding in NC! Just moved and im waiting for my bike to arrive! Your videos have kept my urge to pedal at a manageable level!
Sweeeet! I love it Phil. You've inspired me so much with my own channel and I really appreciate the work you've put in. Thanks for the videos, they're great!
I can relate to your videos cuz you ride places I could go and ride in the state's which is obtainable and inspiring unlike people who post rides in foreign countries with guides which I'll never be able to afford so thank you for bringing content to us regular guys much appreciated!
I've probably said it before but gotta love the blue color scheme! I got a same kinda vibe going on on my Trek X-Caliber. Unfortunately thats the only similarity with our bikes (mine is preeeetty bad)
+Mike Knowles Jr that's another part of Pisgah (kitsuma). About an hour or more south of this place. It's a huge huge forest but the trees and the vegetation are the same.
Love the video !! Rode DH for 5 years in Nevada . Moved back to NC 5 years ago and before moving got rid of all my gear and havnt rose since . Thursday I picked up a used but mint 06 Gary fisher fat possum xt . Saturday 06/16 I decided since I know the Wilson ridge area to go give this ride you did a try . 🤣🤣🤣 bro I so am out of shape . Finally made it to the trail head . Met 4 other riders about to descend . Safer then riding alone I and they hadn't been o. The trail before so we all went down . 🤣🤣🤣to mention these guy and I were all parked at the same lot as Phil and they left the wrong way to the trail and still beat me up there . They took a break at the top but by time I got there they were ready to go . Trail was great !! Tacky and fun , when I got to the rut tho🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣like 🍌's first half no prob but then got a little scared of the tightness and the drops and started hitting that front brake and did a few head overs but enjoyed it , great trail . When you plan to ride pisgah again ?
Phil, i did not go through and see if anyone answered your question about the clearings on the tops of the mountains, they are food plots for deer and turkey and other wildlife. :) You are a wild man!!! I would tell you to ride safely, but i think you are way past that stage. LOL
Some serious shredding here! You should grab some of the micover stickies on amazon. One can permanently stay on the side hole but the top on you might have to take on and off. Wind is crazy on the Hero 5 and Karma grip. I run the same thing! Sweet vid, thanks!
I have not stuck one on the top hole yet...do you just stick a new one on each time or do you have some sort of hack for that?? I just don't want to have to use new sticky tape each time for the top. the side is on for good with no worries.
I haven't found a goodway to hold it in Right now only 3/4 of the cover is stuck and the on the bit is just floating. However the audio quality from the h5/Karma is garbage and there's nothing that can be done. I've tried all the recommended settings and it just sounds like poo.
I didn't ride pisgah trails when I was at app state. I done goofed, but there is still time. i think I've taken my 4runner up near that field at the beginning before haha
RUclips's compression makes a lot of these videos look like garbage and there's not much I can do about that. A higher quality Vimeo version of this video is available to my Patreon Supporters. Vimeo allows for a higher bit-rate. RUclips = 3Mbps Vimeo = 9Mbps Support Skills with Phil on Patreon -> www.patreon.com/SkillswithPhil
Even if youtube allows 3Mbps you should always export videos in higher bitrate. Protune on gopro is 35Mbps iirc. So... Use protune, fix colors, brightness and contrast and export in 35Mbit. It should look much better
I use ProTune, with a flat profile, -1exposure compensation, use LUTs for color grading, and follow RUclips's advanced video encoding recommendations; this isn't my first rodeo. However, youtube still compresses the shit out of things. Even GoPro's own videos look like garbage the videos look 3x as nice on Vimeo.
Another amazing video, I pooped a little at 8:40 These videos get me through the slow part of my work day and inspire me to shred some trails when I get home, thanks Phil! Also... What kind of gloves are those?
Where you got off your bike and turned left at the Mortimer Campground sign is awesome, but try going straight some time. White knuckle until the road, then left on road back to the campground. Also, please go ride Raiders and Yellowbuck, its just been too long since I've ridden in Wilson Creek. And all the secret stuff, I know you know it.
Insane riding, that was awesome! Do motorcycles use some of those? That trail around 8:20 looks a lot like the motorcycle trails we rode up during my enduro motorcycling time, all rutted because of the tires trying to grip and the foot pegs scraping the sides of the rut.
So unfortunate, they're a lot of fun but really mess up the terrain. I don't ride motorcycles anymore, but I always used to have problems with my ridding buddies wanting to use mtb trails instead of our separate network because of how smooth the mtb trails were.
Those trails are in all time condition right now. Did you clean the whole lower schoolhouse ruts section? There is one move in there that just seems impossible with the limited pedal clearance. Go ride Yancee if you haven't yet it's so prime right now. Throw that in with these two trails and you have a pretty big day.
yeah good reason to get off and push for a bit and get some relief - scoping out a ride in the area either tomorrow or probably Monday - maybe toll rd / heartbreak... probably be solo let me know if you are interested in joining
Hey Phil, how do you feel about running wide bars on narrower trails like the part at 11:00? I have 800mm bars on my bike, and I also have a small metal plate in my finger from when I whacked it off a tree while riding :( Cool video!
I think wide bars, within reason, offer a lot of advantages, and while they might make it tough in some sections they make riding more enjoyable overall by giving you better control of your bike. I've clipped my hand twice and broke the same bone twice, not a fun bone to break.
The pastures on top of the mountains are called grassy balds, they are all over the place in western nc/east tn and most are naturally occurring, its unknown why or how they are there
Phil that takes years of experience and not a little courage plus a lot of luck to ride an unfamiliar trail as fast as you do. Please don't ever stop. Was your Fork in the 170 range? Also, I think everyone should wear all of the Safety equipment they have available at any given time because, you never know these days. But, not everyone can wear those Socks as well as you. I want some of those in every color.
Thanks for the comment. My fork was set to 140. I have 3 travel reducer tokens installed. If I were just riding bike parks I'd most like run the fork at the 150-160mm range. I love loud socks, they make things more interesting.
Thank you for uploading this video because I am going to be stopping by there this summer for that exact reason! What colour is the trail you are riding rated as?
Hey Phil, when you first did your bike check for The Calling you had just "thrown some old tires on that you had laying around". If you bought new tires, what brand & tire size do you have on it now ?
Knowing you were riding blind for the most part made me so nervous for you! Ive had so many trees go down on my local trails i kept expecting you to run into one.
Hey Phil. I asked last week about the Wilson Creek area in the comments and I was actually going there but the description said it was poorly marked but this video helps for sure and I definitely want to ride there now. Did you take the thorps creek trail up and then get on a gravel road or just park at the top? Thanks
There are almost no trail markings anywhere on Wilson's creek, but here's strava link. Not sure what the name of the road name was but the whole climb was on a fire road. www.strava.com/activities/935671012
you know your killing it when go pro footage looks fast!
Jack Newman honestly
You are actually one of my mountain biking idols and one of the people that have influenced my passion for mountain biking that I'd love to someday meet in person!!!
Thank you, I'm happy to hear I've been able to help you find a lifelong passion. :)
I'd love to meet you someday!!!
Skills With Phil ..... I LOVE that dolphin yo
Glad you enjoyed the video, it's fun to make these videos and bring you guys along for the ride :)
These videos have it all...fun commentary, great riding. Thanks Phil!
I'm a huge fan of your channel!!! I live in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and I saw your video of your trip to The Wheel Mill. I Love that place!!!
Now.... thats what I call a bike ride on a lovely day ! lol Great vid... very fun to watch.
Hahaha, somebody get the man Trailforks!
Thanks for reppin' the sticker my man!
This was my first ride actually using it, It saved my ass at least once out there but none of the trail names showed up so it was a still a lot of guessing. :/
Ah! If you've got the time you can hop in and fix the names and trails! I try my best to contribute, but I don't set aside enough time to do it.
They are listed online, but weren't appearing on the app for whatever reason.
someBODY ONCE TOLD ME THE WOOORLD IS GONNA ROME ME
Eyes were so wide open watching this. Awesome trail and great riding!
Awesome ride, Phil. You're such an inspiring rider, man. Keep at it!
Thank you my Friend :)
Holy (Flipper sound) there were some awesome sections in there!
Thanks for sharing
You're very welcome, thank you for watching Neil!
This is sick! Cant wait to start riding in NC! Just moved and im waiting for my bike to arrive! Your videos have kept my urge to pedal at a manageable level!
U are fuc... flying, man. Love yours videos Phil and Brians from BKXC as well. Nice job guys :-)
i am in love with that silent wheels! so amazing.
God damn that Magic Mary super Gravity was definitely doing its job!! Great video mate👊
Wow what a thrilling video! It was so good I had to hit the like button on my Xbox one which takes a lot of work.
That's some next level dedication. Thank you Gale
You are Baap of all the mountain bikers... thank you phill for your guidance
I've only been to Wilson's Creek on one occasion, but it was such a sick area. This video does it justice. Great stuff
Sweeeet! I love it Phil. You've inspired me so much with my own channel and I really appreciate the work you've put in. Thanks for the videos, they're great!
Wow. The misplaced wind screen made the reduculously fast downhills seem reduculously faster. Some of those sections were way chunky! Fun video.
I can relate to your videos cuz you ride places I could go and ride in the state's which is obtainable and inspiring unlike people who post rides in foreign countries with guides which I'll never be able to afford so thank you for bringing content to us regular guys much appreciated!
Super Rad!! Glad to see the pads go on!! Keep shredding and remember to Live-Life-Loud!!
Love seeing that 603 plate. Don't see many of those in the Greenville/Asheville area.
I've probably said it before but gotta love the blue color scheme! I got a same kinda vibe going on on my Trek X-Caliber. Unfortunately thats the only similarity with our bikes (mine is preeeetty bad)
So pinned. Very fun to watch Phil, that rutted section blew my mind with how fast you were riding it.
I have to admit, it was a wee bit sketchy.
Impressive run brother, I backpack all over wilson creek area, I couldn't imagine Mountain biking it.
Last time I rode up Edgemont it was super soggy. No fun :( But the trails are worth it! Great video as always.
Mother of dolphin sounds, that middle section was gnarly!
You absolute madman, that was amazing !
you need to come ride with our crew sometime! we all live in Boone but ride Wilson's all the time. Definitely the gnarliest trails around.
You beast! Those speeds through that gully was crazy!
Dang Phil super gnarled deep rut ride, thank god you made it. Sick footage
Looks like a section you rode with Seth a while back. The footage looked like something from a video game when you where going flat out. Good stuff!
Thrills with Phil!
Every Friday :)
IceCreamTrucker I think it's 140
+Esco Barkie it's set to 140mm currently.
Ohhhhh!!! 😜
Lol
Dude! So fast. Always like watching your downhill rides bro!
Dang Phi!!!! I wish I could ride with that kind of speed! Holy crap!
That looked a faast, proper ride. I've been holding on to my chair while watching haha.
Your bike is so quiet and smooth.
It's almost too quiet. Have to deliberately shift a few times when I come up on people on the trails.
Now I can show all my friends this video and show them all the fun the miss out on when I go on solo rides😎
603 represent! where's your favorite place to ride in our beautiful state?
Phil, i did not go through and see if anyone answered your question about the clearings on the tops of the mountains, they are food plots for deer and turkey and other wildlife. :) You are a wild man!!! I would tell you to ride safely, but i think you are way past that stage. LOL
Why is it so satisfying to watch!?
You know when Phil spills one out, it's fricken GNARLY haha
+MtbFiend haha, this was defintely gnarilier in person too.
I feel you dude! Gopro and gimbal does no justice!
I love that steep rut trail soooo much
I also recommend black mountain, squirrel gap, and farlow gap that is if your willing to..... *cough* climb a lot *cough*
+EnduroMTBusa it's really fun, I love the challenge of that kind of terrain
Some serious shredding here! You should grab some of the micover stickies on amazon. One can permanently stay on the side hole but the top on you might have to take on and off. Wind is crazy on the Hero 5 and Karma grip. I run the same thing! Sweet vid, thanks!

My God Phil you really got some speed on there!!
Was that really just the Hero5 on stabilize mode on a chest mount!? So freaking smooth during that super gnarly section!
Awesome man ! Good job !
Nice rip on such a gnarly trail.
Hey Phil n Love ur videos. don't think I've seen u post this but what about a comparison of ur trek vs evil.
Epic Ride man, more trail guides of the Pisgah, Brevard, Dupont area coming soon? And have you ever been out to Tsali?
I didn't ride pisgah trails when I was at app state. I done goofed, but there is still
time. i think I've taken my 4runner up near that field at the beginning before haha
This was awesome! Thanks again!
Thank you Adam :)
Not much pedal clearance in those ruts! Sweet vid!
Haha nope, not much room at all!
you're a beast.. good vids. bro.
RUclips's compression makes a lot of these videos look like garbage and there's not much I can do about that.
A higher quality Vimeo version of this video is available to my Patreon Supporters. Vimeo allows for a higher bit-rate.
RUclips = 3Mbps
Vimeo = 9Mbps
Support Skills with Phil on Patreon -> www.patreon.com/SkillswithPhil
Skills With Phil dude if you guys mention that your videos are higher quality on Vimeo I would've signed up to patron earlier!
If i watched it in 1440 it was fine
Not only that, but you can download the file and watch it offline without buffering!
Even if youtube allows 3Mbps you should always export videos in higher bitrate. Protune on gopro is 35Mbps iirc. So... Use protune, fix colors, brightness and contrast and export in 35Mbit. It should look much better

Holy crap
Super gnarly blind riding
Balls of steel
those are some wild trails!
You should go ride at DuPont. They have a really cool flow trail called ridge line. It's super fun
I wanted to list all the ways I would die on that, but I lost count.
Haha, that would be a fun list to read through.
Another amazing video, I pooped a little at 8:40 These videos get me through the slow part of my work day and inspire me to shred some trails when I get home, thanks Phil!
Also... What kind of gloves are those?
Have you ever thought to do a group ride in the DuPont / pisgah trails
Where you got off your bike and turned left at the Mortimer Campground sign is awesome, but try going straight some time. White knuckle until the road, then left on road back to the campground. +BlindstuffMTB they are not supposed to be on those trails but the last time we rode it we ran into a few dirt bikers climbing up.
So unfortunate, they're a lot of fun but really mess up the terrain. I don't ride motorcycles anymore, but I always used to have problems with my ridding buddies wanting to use mtb trails instead of our separate network because of how smooth the mtb trails were.
BlindstuffMTB the moto trails are in bad shape because motos ride them, mtbs aren't nearly as damaging
Cullen Herring I agree. That's also part of what makes them interesting to ride on a Moto. Just sucks to see people riding motos on mtb trails
BlindstuffMTB 100% agreed
Roan Mountain has this energy I can't explain
That terrain looks like the 2nd round of EWS in Corral, Chile last year
Those trails are in all time condition right now. Did you clean the whole lower schoolhouse ruts section? There is one move in there that just seems impossible with the limited pedal clearance. Go ride Yancee if you haven't yet it's so prime right now. Throw that in with these two trails and you have a pretty big day.
+nobody+ love Yancey's! Needs a little bush whacking on the climb though hahaha
yeah good reason to get off and push for a bit and get some relief - scoping out a ride in the area either tomorrow or probably Monday - maybe toll rd / heartbreak... probably be solo let me know if you are interested in joining
What wind cover do you use?
Phil you should have alot more subs great stuff
+Math_ew MLLB thanks dude, just doing what I can :)
This is insane. And awesome.
Did you dab on the drift at 10:23? That looked like a "pucker" inducing slide either way. Skills.
Sweet, when u had the national champs at snowshoe how did u like it?
still on of the best ones
Hey Phil, how do you feel about running wide bars on narrower trails like the part at 11:00? I have 800mm bars on my bike, and I also have a small metal plate in my finger from when I whacked it off a tree while riding :( Cool video!

Hello Phil what is a good flat pedal not the best but a good one
The pastures on top of the mountains are called grassy balds, they are all over the place in western nc/east tn and most are naturally occurring, its unknown why or how they are there
Nice looking ride.
Just did this Friday, only been riding for about a month so I thought I was gonna die. it's even nastier below where you forked left tho.
Phil that takes years of experience and not a little courage plus a lot of luck to ride an unfamiliar trail as fast as you do. Please don't ever stop. Was your Fork in the 170 range? Got any tips on how to maintain speed through tight corners ?
Thank you for uploading this video because I am going to be stopping by there this summer for that exact reason!
What colour is the trail you are riding rated as?
Daniel Forget watch at like 9:58
Thank you!
Hey Phil, when you first did your bike check for The Calling you had just "thrown some old tires on that you had laying around". If you bought new tires, what brand & tire size do you have on it now ?
3.15 pillar looks super long Phil, also seat pushed quite far back on the rail's. Did you go Medium to keep the wheelbase short ?
Knowing you were riding blind for the most part made me so nervous for you! Ive had so many trees go down on my local trails i kept expecting you to run into one.
LOVE it out there!
So much fun!
hey Phil are you going to give an updated review on your Evil Bikes frame?
Some speed you had there, any idea how fast you were going?
are you going to ve riding highland more this year phil?
I really like the intro music
How are you getting such stable footage?!? That's amazing!
What seat do you use and is it comfortable for long sitting pedaling sessions, like that climb at the beginning?
Wicked fast wow brother
I am looking forward to the day when you and Alex fro. single track sampler make a video together. That would be so gnarly!
I can't wait until that happens. He's such a positive dude to be around.
Do a video on best places for mountain biking vacations!
you ripped that trail!
You are the GOAT Phil so fucking great !!
Hey Phil. I asked last week about the Wilson Creek area in the comments and I was actually going there but the description said it was poorly marked but this video helps for sure and I definitely want to ride there now. You should use the Raleigh tokul 3 on that trails😂
that was quite flow in trail!!
Hey Phil! Do you still have the Tokul 3? I want to get one, and I was wondering if it is still holding up.
