Looks awesome! I'm from Interior BC and have always wanted to ride those trails. This one in particular would be unreal when it gets some rain in the fall! Cheers guys!
That would be great. It would be really nice to leave the gimbal and gopro on without worrying about battery life on long rides. Thanks for the quick response.
My dad’s Stumpjumper had that same squeak on his XTR derailleur. But, we found that out after we replaced ALL of his bearings in his suspension linkage.
Yo Phil I rode for 5 hours today, like always, some killer climbs...BUT here I am, at home, feet up, drinking an ice cold beer watching you suffer a similar fate LOL
Fog machine! LMAO... rode Snow Summit in SoCal yesterday and couldn't come up with the right adjective to describe "the dust." Awesome! Keep sending it man!
This looked super gnarly, you were hitting some of those trails blind crazy fast too. Props for that, the dust and loose ground on that steep of a decent is going to claim some crashes.
Dude Phil, not gonna lie! I freakin love your American flag glove collection! Its awesome to see un-apologetically patriotic people in action sports!!!
Ah... earlier today I fixed the squeek from my clutch as well. The thing also got super stiff but luckily a good clean up and regrease was all it needed to be nicely smooth and quiet again.
Are you still running that oval chainring? Apparently you have to service your clutch slightly more often because you're kinda forcing the clutch to move a tiny bit every pedal stroke (since the chain ring goes back and forth from big to small). Where as with a standard chanring it doesn't expand the rear mech since it's a fixed size the whole way around. If you search "Shimano Clutch Maintenance" on RUclips there's a guy that details his experience with an oval ring on shimano drivetrain and shows you how to take it apart and grease it.
That looked NASTY, and I can't imagine riding that with a layer of dust hovering over it. Not fun....been there, only on less gnarly trails. Have you watched Jordan Boostmaster's latest video...the first one with his new gimbal. He counterbalances his gimbal with some coins and it seems to prevent that little bit of wiggle on the g-outs and landings. You might try it just to see if you can eliminate that issue. Thanks for the video as always, and keep on shredding! :-)
Hi Phil on harder trails do you think of having a second bike with more travel, whats your feeling on 29er s, looking to upgrade but a bit torn on which way to go. I am still on a 26 and when I get on a 29 they seem like a giant wheel, i am only 5.8 about 165 take care and as usually great riding
Hey Phil, recently got into your videos, love them, any advice for a young dirt bike rider who wants to get into this, not this extreme I live in the uk so it's rare to find pleases I think, I'm thinking about getting a hard tail diamond back because as I'm young I just want something to play about on any advice for a bike? Thanks!
When I get time. I've gotten enough time on the bike to get a good feel, but need to talk about it meow which is easier said than done with classes/cycling team commitments.
So Phil, I want to get a new YT Jeffsy (The AL TWO) but don't know whether to get the 140mm 29er or the 150mm 27.5 variant. I am only 5'7 and my main gripe with my current 29er hardtail is that I can't get my weight far enough back to hold a manual (even a professional coach said so) and I'm 16, so I really want to be able to manual. Have you ever had a 29er and/or would you ever consider getting one? P.S. I ride trails where both 140mm or 150mm would be sufficient, it's more about the wheel size.
if you gonna ride more downhill type stuff with the 27.5 i ride a niner wfo 9 with 160mm in the front and 150mm in the rear with 27.5 wheels by far the best bike I've owned go with the 27.5
sick video man. that trail was harsh lol I like smooth jumps the most but still would love to ride that trail...come visit Alexander(aka mountain bike Jesus) in Colorado
Hey Skills With Phil, your clutch is squeaking because the oval chainring constantly is lengthening and shortening the chain and therefor making the clutch always move, making the bushings and the mechanism in the clutch wear out quickly, I had a oval chainring and I didn't realise that it was it's fault cus my clutch was making that noise. Cheers just offering advice 🤙🏼
I usually inflate my PSI to hand feel on my trail bike then make small adjustments if it's too soft or hard. I don't know what I've been running back home, but I usually run a PSI just high enough that I don't ping rims. When I go to a bike park with berms I'll go up a few more.
Thanks! I probably have it on my derailleur but didn't know about it. You're a great service to the MTB community! Been really liking some of your shots off the chest mount. Keep up the good work. Stay Strong!
xo1 eagle has a clutch. but it's a bit different from shimano in that it adds tension progressively the further the derailleur cage gets moved forwards. I also had a chain slap problem in the hardest gears because the chain is too close to the chainstay, but a bit of velcro fixed it
looking for a new full suspension bike and like to ride those kinds of trails. ill be coming from a hardtail and would i be able to ride that trail with even 3/4 of that speed only and still walk/drive hopme?
That's the complete opposite of the trails here at the moment. You need the goggles for mud spray off the tyres. Riding steep stuff like that with brake bumps, roots, rocks and drops makes life interesting.
Well I have a friend debating between the calling and the wreckoning. I thought you might have some insight. He likes the idea of having more travel but he's not a strong climber. He comes from motocross background. We live in Northern California near Santa Cruz.
Hey Phil, can you please do an edit with Jeff Kendallweed? I feel like you guys have similar styles and would really complement each other's riding in a good edit.
I know it was just a fun ride, but it would have been nice if you got to lead because the short bursts of open trail you had where brutally fast in those conditions.
Yeah, it's either blow the highlights or black out the shadows. Just looks dark overall, though. Some blown highlights aren't too bad if you're mainly in the shade. The GoPro's adjust well to the light. I keep mine on -1.0 because they tend to be a bit too bright, and keep the tone on flat, not GoPro color. Don't adjust that in post. Seems to work well.
Awesome riding with you Phil! Even though i couldn't see you half the time ;)
So good riding with you dude! We'll meet again Eric!
Looks awesome! I'm from Interior BC and have always wanted to ride those trails.
This one in particular would be unreal when it gets some rain in the fall!
Cheers guys!
Hi Eric. How did you modify your gimbal to use an external battery? I PM'd you as well. Cheers!
Hey JM, I'll do a video on my setup sometime :)
That would be great. It would be really nice to leave the gimbal and gopro on without worrying about battery life on long rides. Thanks for the quick response.
hey phil, looks like your bike took a freaking beating could you do a video about upkeep and maintence after this trip?
My dad’s Stumpjumper had that same squeak on his XTR derailleur. But, we found that out after we replaced ALL of his bearings in his suspension linkage.
Yo Phil I rode for 5 hours today, like always, some killer climbs...BUT here I am, at home, feet up, drinking an ice cold beer watching you suffer a similar fate LOL
HAha that's a big ride!
Can't see the dance floor- good one. Post dust rides lends itself to boogies on the dance floor- up the nose. Bumps looked brutal. Love da vids man!
a good Sunday treat to watch...Peace!!!!.
Looks like a lot of fun. I have to get out to the trails soon.
Hey Phil, liked the shots of you soaking in that amazing scenery just before things got teeth chattering ROWDY!
Wish I could have spent more time up there. So freaking pretty!
Jeezus Phil, that trail is one of the gnarliest I've seen! Proper sketchy all the way. Thanks for the vids dude. Love em all bro.
I just got an ad on the carbon wheels. Very cool. I have mags but seeing those carbons in action is very cool.
Fog machine! LMAO... rode Snow Summit in SoCal yesterday and couldn't come up with the right adjective to describe "the dust." Awesome! Keep sending it man!
Can't imagine what crazy dance moves you and Hayley would have on a fogged up dance floor, Skills With Phil.
Fantastic single track trail. BC is known for tons and tons of these. Hopefully you can do a big mountain trail one day.
Were you running square tires? Chunky!!
Digging all the great videos... thanks for taking the time to make them!!!
+zinger981 thank you! You guys are the reason why I do it!
Phil, that first climb looked brutal! This as an epic location. Sweet downhill too.
This looked super gnarly, you were hitting some of those trails blind crazy fast too. Props for that, the dust and loose ground on that steep of a decent is going to claim some crashes.
Well he's a pro downhill racer
Dude Phil, not gonna lie! I freakin love your American flag glove collection! Its awesome to see un-apologetically patriotic people in action sports!!!
Ah... earlier today I fixed the squeek from my clutch as well. The thing also got super stiff but luckily a good clean up and regrease was all it needed to be nicely smooth and quiet again.
I need to do that, but I'll be pretty lazy most likely.
Had the same squeak issue with my Following. Was concerned it was a pivot turned out to be derailluer clutch.
Hey Phil, were you running Marys (f/ r, or both?) in these conditions as well? How are they doing?
with the awesomeness of mountain biking performed by Phil....i might consider disposing my road bikes !!!
Hey Phil I race for Kennesaw State University. I was just wondering if your going to be a Bervard NC Race this coming weekend?
For your next bike would you consider a canyon since they now sell in the states?
Maybe I don't rule out anything but they don't excite me either.
Skills With Phil I just got a canyon Neuron al 8.0 and it is sick. Best bike for the money.
i remember i was walking around blackcomb and i saw a rockdrop onto a wooden landing that looked preety sick
Are you still running that oval chainring? Apparently you have to service your clutch slightly more often because you're kinda forcing the clutch to move a tiny bit every pedal stroke (since the chain ring goes back and forth from big to small). Awesome vid, keep em coming.
That climb made me tired just watching it! Awesome Vid :)
U should go to Snowdonia national park in the UK
+gtr fanboi I'll make it to the UK one is these days
If you going UK then you should go somewhere like bike park wales or llandegla, or antur stiniog
Go to Coed Y Brenin!
Luke Wanden coed y brenin is pretty good
Skills With Phil yay
hey Phil, u getting settled in class? hope so. post some more vids soon. I'm living vicariously through YOU! lol
Somewhat! Things are starting to kick in full swing.
Yo Phil would it be a good idea to put a zip tie around the brake and shifter cables?
Are u ever consider do live bike rides mate that be cool
Hi Phil on harder trails do you think of having a second bike with more travel, whats your feeling on 29er s, looking to upgrade but a bit torn on which way to go. I am still on a 26 and when I get on a 29 they seem like a giant wheel, i am only 5.8 about 165 take care and as usually great riding
that reminds me of some of my local trails, yarra valley is a wonderful place
Hey Phil, recently got into your videos, love them, any advice for a young dirt bike rider who wants to get into this, not this extreme I live in the uk so it's rare to find pleases I think, I'm thinking about getting a hard tail diamond back because as I'm young I just want something to play about on any advice for a bike? Thanks!
@skills_with_phil You once had blue gloves with a forrest pictured on them. What's the brand name?
Keep it up,you just earned my sub because you inspire me to get out there and push my self even tho I ride trails on a BMW bike
I grew up riding BMX! Run what you brung!
Phil I love all your videos thanks for being so genuine. What do you do for a living?
This
When I go down a Trail like this I like to pretend a big ole Sasquatch is chasing after me, it really gets the motor running!!
Hey Phil when will you review the cush core insert?
When I get time. I've gotten enough time on the bike to get a good feel, but need to talk about it meow which is easier said than done with classes/cycling team commitments.
Skills With Phil Looking forward to it! Very interested in the idea although I'm not able to afford it atm.
Dream trip! 🤙 What grips do you have? My bike is the same color as yours and they would look sick on it!
Deity Knucledusters
Phil, have you been experimenting with the variable amount of travel your fork has or have you just set it and left it alone?
I've stayed with 140mm. For Slalom Nationals I might drop down to 130mm and put the BB in xl for ultimate berm slaying.
Wow Phil, you're earning those DH runs in this mountain!
That was a brutal climb, video doesn't do it justice.
Favorite line: "It's like a fog machine going on, can't see whats on the dance floor!"
Love your vids dude,you're awesome.
Thanks so much!
So Phil, I want to get a new YT Jeffsy (The AL TWO) but don't know whether to get the 140mm 29er or the 150mm 27.5 variant. TheOrangutank get the 27.5, it's so much more nimble than the 29
TheOrangutank haha I Just ordered my Jeffsy ( cf one) a Fee days ago, should get Herr tomorrow. I Go for 27,5
275 bro since your on the shorter end
You're tall enough that you should be able to be able to manual a 29er as long as your seat tube allows your seat to get out of your way.
sick video man. that trail was harsh lol I like smooth jumps the most but still would love to ride that trail...come visit Alexander(aka mountain bike Jesus) in Colorado
Not a big deal now that we've located the source of the squeak. Sometimes the hardest thing is knowing what to fix.
Phil, do you ride with different tyre pressures here vs those you use on the East Coast?
I usually inflate my PSI to hand feel on my trail bike then make small adjustments if it's too soft or hard. I don't know what I've been running back home, but I usually run a PSI just high enough that I don't ping rims. When I go to a bike park with berms I'll go up a few more.
Quite the manual king there Phil lol
Awesome ride dude, looks sick! How is school going so far this semester?
Whistler laps the next vid?? I've seen plenty of Whistler lap footage but I have a good feeling that you will show us something special!
Phil you ever ride the Charlotte area?
Nah, only in the area for the airport usually.
I hear ya not the best compared to whats by you
damn this looks so much fun!
Pain cave😂😂🤣😭. That's hilarious. If you do wear knee pads what is your favorite?
Is that a carbon stash or aluminum?
i know this may be a dumb question..but what is that plus thing on the top of your fork and what is it for?
Trek slash 9.9 :) now that's a bike!
Phil what back breaks do you run ?
I run TRP slates.
What kind of bike were u shredding with? Couldn't really make it out
It's an Evil Calling custom build, check his video about it
What is this clutch?
+Joshua Buren a part on modern derailleurs that helps to eliminate chain slap and chain drop by adding additional tension.
Thanks! I probably have it on my derailleur but didn't know about it. You're a great service to the MTB community! Been really liking some of your shots off the chest mount. Keep up the good work. Stay Strong!
Yeah so I got an eagle xo1 and it slaps like crazy. No clutch I guess??
If it weren't for that I'd have the quietest bike ever.
xo1 eagle has a clutch.
but it's a bit different from shimano in that it adds tension progressively the further the derailleur cage gets moved forwards. I also had a chain slap problem in the hardest gears because the chain is too close to the chainstay, but a bit of velcro fixed it
Fresh D
Sucks.. Paid a lot of money for a slappy ass derailleur. :-(
looking for a new full suspension bike and like to ride those kinds of trails. ill be coming from a hardtail and would i be able to ride that trail with even 3/4 of that speed only and still walk/drive hopme?
The camera must not do those hills justice, they look killer to go up
Ive been up there, holy hell the climb sucks. Worth it for the decent though
What's the advantage of riding with the clutch engaged?
+Herkus Rudzinskas prevents chain slap and dropped chains
Are there any disadvantages? (Other than the squeaking noise)
Looked rough!!
Proper rowdy trail. Moon dust conditions -> smoke machine + epic moustache = Time travel
Haha!
Phil always takes the high and unridden lines.😁
Those are usually the best lines!
Phil what bars and stem do you run ?
Check the Description ▶︎ philkmetz.com/my-gear/
Skills With Phil thanks bro really appreciate it I'm getting TRP Slates
That's the complete opposite of the trails here at the moment. You need the goggles for mud spray off the tyres. Riding steep stuff like that with brake bumps, roots, rocks and drops makes life interesting.
That's usually the case for me in NC!
Mud Makes life more exciting and allows you to hose shorts and the bike afterwards
Hi phill! Can I send you something and how do I do that
What's up dude. Would you recommend to own both a trail bike and a dh bike, or simply own a real good quality trail bike?
david osorio id say a good quality trail bike
FlyingTurtle why do you think that. I have a 2017 giant trance 2
That trail was rough!!
ohhh Phil. what a goddamn good video. YEEWWWWW
BRAAAP!
Hey Phil what kind of shoes do you wear? Also I like the vids keep up the good work

Mahalo!
Seems like the bike was bouncing up and down heavily during the climb
Hey phi you should come and ride Squamish
I meant phil
+Jackson Hawkins i tried , but had a mechanical within a minute of the descent that cut thw ride short
What do you think of the evil wreckoning ?
+Patrick Thomas never ridden one. I ride an evil calling
Well I have a friend debating between the calling and the wreckoning. I thought you might have some insight. He likes the idea of having more travel but he's not a strong climber. He comes from motocross background. We live in Northern California near Santa Cruz.
Omg there's the same squeaking noice on my bike thanks so much
Thank Eric from BCpov!
I guess DUSTY was the buzz word for that ride...nice shreddin'...
Dusty most definitely was the buzz word that day.
Don't forget your goggles next time...carry them with you.
Rip i missed you i was up there tuesday abd wensday.
Ah bummer! :( Hope you had fun
Wow that trail was bumping. Don't think I would have enjoyed that one.
I'm 4'10 would a small frame mtb work or get a kids 24 diamondback bike?
SKYLAR ONWILER you could run a xs frame if it's possible
Hey Phil, can you please do an edit with Jeff Kendallweed? I feel like you guys have similar styles and would really complement each other's riding in a good edit.
I know it was just a fun ride, but it would have been nice if you got to lead because the short bursts of open trail you had where brutally fast in those conditions.
Yeah, I don't know if I would have wanted to lead on a trail like that. I would have gotten myself into trouble :P
nice ride m8
+Haund 2424 thx m8
Can’t see what’s going on on the dance floor lol

Phil rides the John Wayne kit
I am 6'2 and i can't manual I have a 26er which size should I choose?
Thanks
My bike is 40 pound
Neat.
Was wanting to start ayoutube chanel what are your tips thanks
Make videos that you would want to watch yourself. :) Good luck
I can't see anything, either! Turn the brightness up! Video is really dark!
Adjusting the color is super tricky on days like that with super bright spots and super dark spots. I do my best, sometimes I miss the mark. Oh well.
Dude man, THAT is some seriously epic shit right there. Absolutely delicious.
Can you get an Alexander beard?
Not my style!
Nobody can, that's why it's an Alexander beard
