As a combat vet I can tell you the hardest thing to hold onto is your humanity. Here just for a little while these men found their humanity in the middle of the insanity, sadly they returned to the insanity and it went on for another 4 years with no other truces as the General made sure of that. You never think about tomorrow in WAR, if you do you will never survive today. This is not so much a Christmas song but more a salute to those who never returned home for any other Holidays. 11/11 is here the day we remember fallen buddies and hope they have found the peace we waste every day carrying out insanity forward and forgetting our humanity. Sadly it is true.."only the DEAD know the end of WAR".. may we never forget but sadly we will and for all us Vets we ask you to remember those that sacrificed everything regardless of what side they were on as this is for them and their courage and valor as they did bear the war on their shoulders but now rest forever with that burden lifted.
Thank you for your service! We owe each Man and Woman a huge debt of gratitude for our freedom
Thank you... For everything you and your buddies have done for us. I hope we never reach another day like this. No reason for strangers to fight each other because " kings " are bitter with one another.

Today... 103 years ago... 11/11, 11:11am the cannons on the western front did go silence.... and ww1 did end... in 4 years, 3 months and 2 weeks over 20 million lives was lost, So today i wish ya`ll a nice Veterans Day !! And don't forget to thank a Veteran, which i think should be done everyday
Hideo Kojima has a theme in some Metal Gear games that soldiers on opposing sides can understand each other better than civilians from their own country. Some military veterans have commented on Christmas Truce reactions that that holds true in this situation. Manfred von Schreiber, who was at the truce, wrote that he felt that all of the soldiers had a job to do - to kill each other - but on this one day, they simply refused to do it.

This is not call of duty, this is the reality for our kids! I have boys 10-20 who would be forced to fight. It's heartbreaking for me as a mum thinking about it 😭
some were not forced to fight, after the conscripts got massacred, the volunteers joined up ,the pals regiments!, who also got massacred!!

How would one feel put in the situation they were in?
To be frank, very few can imagine it. Let's be honest here. What most of us can conjure up in our minds when it comes to imagining how they had it wouldn't come close to what they actually had to deal with. Not only when it comes to the mental and physical stress you'd have to endure, but also dealing with what you have found your self capable of doing when it comes to killing the enemy. True, knowing that you're standing next to someone who might have killed your brother in arms standing next to you in the trenches the day before would be difficult, but who have you killed? And what would you feel when you imagine what they think about you?
I remember reading about Franz Stiegler, who they sing about in No Bullets Fly. When who he was became public knowledge he was called traitor by older germans for not having shot down the plane, and Nazi scum by people in the US/Canada for having fought for the Germans. He simply replied with "You would never understand."
I think it's important to understand that fact... That we, in the age of RUclips with all the comforts we live in, simply cannot understand what they had to go through.
Franz was a hero. A man, who regardless of sides because let's be honest, both sides were inherently evil and racked with war crimes, kept his morals and humanity. He's a man that we all all need to learn from. If everyone had been like him, this world would be wrought with honor. And honor is something hard to find nowadays.
@@GetDougDimmadomed I think it is a credit to the squadron commander who Franz was first assigned to that we can thank for his remembering that underneath the glory, protecting germany from the allies, the kills, his record as an ace, but that he was a human being and that men who are incapable of fighting back are human too and should be allowed to live again.
@@tyvernoverlord5363 I believe his first squadron commander was very clear on that he himself would shoot anyone he found firing upon pilots in parachutes. Meaning, when you have incapacitated someone, you don't humiliate or torment them afterwards. Quite the opposite. If you were to capture an enemy, he would be treated with respect despite being a prisoner of war. We don't really see that nowadays do we?
@@GetDougDimmadomed Indeed. You could read up on what happened to the city of Dresden when WW2 basically had been won. The city was more or less leveled to the ground to really crush the morale of the German nation as a whole. There was no other reason for bombing the city than to just deliver another crushing blow. And the ones that suffered were the people.
A german soldier back at this frontline in 1914 described the whole situation in his diary. Sabaton probably used the story this soldier wrote to make the scenes and the lyrics for the song.

As a vet I just want to echo what greater people had said, we do not fight because we hate what is in front of us, we fight because we love what is behind us. I would have laid down my life for any of my brothers, instead I ended up seeing off 5 of my brothers on their final flight home.
Its hard seeing them fight each other after they became friends and played games. But that's war.

Great Reaction, for more on this topic there is a decent movie (2005) "Joyeux Noel" (Merry Christmas) shows the German, French & British (well a Scottish unit) , sadly when word of these events got out many units were punished and relocated to other sections of the line were the fighting was more savage. and then they made sure on holidays they would launch attacks and such. but the war took a turn and got more deadly esp once GAS started to be used in 1915 some soldier tried to repeat the event of 1914 but were shot .

But think that those men in 1914 war had fun, playing soccer and eating together for Christmas truce, and all the time they knew that battle began again. Read end credits and you'll see that Floor did those ending beautiful voices and singing. This is an epic Christmas song for this year. Haha

There were hundreds of attempted truces in 1914. Most of them ended up with the first man to attempt a truce being shot instantly.
It was probably the last war where Ideology/Relegion weren't the biggest factor. They could actually be friends for a night, because before the war they were actually friends. And also mutal respect to collect the dead of both sides. What drives me crazy is, who was that german soldier that was the first one to go up, He should have a statue.

The part that gets me is that, after that night of fellowship, they had to get up and fight and kill each other the next day. That must have been beyond awful.
If it helps your faith in humanity, many of them didn't. They ended up having to remove a lot of the men who took part in this from the frontlines and replace them because they refused to continue fighting, or you know would shoot at the enemy if told to but miraculously never hit.
