Exactly this. Although you can love and hate them too. There’s Apple products I’ll tell people to buy, like the MacBook Air M1 or the 14”/16” MacBook Pro, then there’s this iPad.
This would be somewhat tolerable if it was about $350. A $20 increase from the 9th generation iPad, at $450, that is way too much, plus they really should have given it the 2nd gen Apple Pencil 2 support and the quality screen since it is the new design.
The iPad lineup is such a mess at the moment. Even I get confused by all the different models and the features that each of them have. I cannot imagine how someone like my parents would go about buying an iPad and the right case for it
That's why I bought myself, my wife, and my mother Nokia T20 Android tablets with Jelly comb universal bluetooth keyboards, a 256GB Micro SD card, and clear rubber bumper cases, as all 3 all in with are still cheaper than one base model iPad with the keyboard, plus a USB C to Micro USB adapter to charge the keyboards is like $2 if we don't want to carry an extra cable.
@@m-stat9 Sure if you buy lowend junk off someplace like Aliexpress, but so far Nokia is making solid tablets for the money with all day battery life, and constant software updates (I use my Nokia T20 tablet as my main portable device next to my phone, and do the majority of my work on it, and have not turned on my work PC in months other than to do system updates, and edit a couple of videos). Also their phones are on the Android One update program as I use a Nokia G50 as my daily phone just fine. Are they perfect, no, but neither is Apple, no company is. To be clear I'm no Android fanboy, and I don't hate Apple as I grew up in the 80's using an Apple IIe with dual disk drives (later briefly an Apple IIGS), on the same desk next to my Commodore 64 and 128, then in the late 90's/early 00's owned an iMac G3 Graphite, not counting all the Apple II, and Mac systems we used in school. My last Apple device was a used 13in Mid-2012 Macbook Pro(it's still going with upgrades now running Solus Linux passed down to one of my nieces who needed it more than me), it's just these days for my use cases, and this economy I can't justify Apple's prices when I have a family all needing devices, and Apple hardware limitations like no consumer friendly storage expansion like MicroSD cards, or the lack of a headphone jack(yes I do use wired earbuds, and headphones from my 30+ year collection from time to time when my bluetooth ones are charging, or I want higher sound quality out of say my Philips open backs with a Fiio A3 amp).
It feels to me like Apple is trying really hard to justify having 3 levels of iPad when they really only need 2: Pro and Non-Pro. Just combine the base and the Air and you’d have one product that would make more sense for the non-pro users and would probably make more sense for apple’s supply chain as well 🤷♂️
My man. My ten year old, who this model is for, doesnt care about usb 2.0. Buy the pro if u want those features. I think its perfect for the average person to watch youtube and surf the web. U dont need laminated screens and an apple pencil 2 to order stuff on amazon
On the display, I heard it mentioned on another tech channel, possibly LTT, that it isn't laminated due to repair costs. The base model iPad is deployed in fleets like schools and corporations where having the glass cheaply replaced is a huge plus. A laminated screen repair might be $150 vs a non-laminated glass replacement can be done by the in-house IT for $30. It's a bummer for private consumers like us, but a plus for the big purchasers. Would be interesting to see the sales breakdown of the individual buyer vs the fleet purchaser.
That's the problem when you start designing towards niche markets and pricepoints. You lost consumers by a bad choice driven by that reason, but you also lost your niche in edu because of the $120 price increase anyway.
@@vtvincent4893 It would be interesting to see what kind of discount big purchasers get. I doubt it's $120 off retail but it might be $60/unit for orders greater than 200 units? Guessing here.
If the 9th gen iPad didn't exist this would make sense. But as long as you can buy the much cheaper 9th gen iPad no school will go for the 10th gen anyways.
@@vtvincent4893 the $120 price increase is offset by being able to re-use apple pencil 1's that schools and corporations bought in bulk years ago. the apple pencil 2 which is $129... the $9 adapter suddenly makes sense and is priced accordingly as well, and ends up being incredibly useful for those bulk buyers that can have the full new iPad experience with the pencil as part of their usual annual cycle of purchases with virtually no change in price, and no real need to fork over more cash for accessories (schools and corporations were never gonna go with the apple folio keyboard case, they would have sourced other cheaper keyboard cases, or skipped the keyboard all together and just gotten a protective case instead).
The deliberate lack of cross/backwards compatibility with accessories is a real disappointment, and would have done a lot to justify it IMO. And to add to the dogpile of sadness I've also seen reviews showing that the USB-C data transfer is nearer to USB 2.0 speeds so there goes a chunk of the appeal of USB-C. I took a gamble on grabbing a 9th gen in September at $270, hoping I wouldn't regret pulling the trigger just before a new model was announced.....and yeah, pretty safe to say I'm happy with the purchase. The price point hike alone is a bummer, but this update also does nothing to justify it beyond the nicer aesthetic.
I ended up getting the Mini with 256 GB and the Pencil after this got announced, and I've been loving it so far. Love how compact and portable it is, and I feel like it's a much better value compared to the new base iPad. Sideways camera is a neat idea, but no Pencil 2 support and the $120 price increase killed getting it for me.
With the non-laminated display I completely understand why most of the time this iPad is probably going to be for kids or for company’s at my work we use the iPad 9th gen and the screens get broken all the time and it’s a lot more affordable to just replace the glass and I also got an iPad 9th gen for my kid for that reason that’s a lot more affordable to replace the glass the a $400 or $500 screen.
All of the odd choices pretty much come down to Apple catering to the education market. There was an Apple event a few years back held at a college where they announced the 6th gen iPad which gives clear insight into where Apple is targeting this product to. Right now Google has a strangle hold on the education market with chromebooks and Apple can’t laminate the screen and ditch Apple Pencil 1 support because then they would be giving Google the market in a silver platter. The price is high but I bet in bulk Apple will make them reasonably enticing for school.
Totally agree. Just about every reviewer is reviewing this from the point of view of an iPad Pro user. Of course, this iPad is going to suck when you’re comparing it to its big brothers. The non-laminated display costs $15 to replace the glass. For education, that is a godsend since kids break the glass all the time. If it were laminated, it would cost $150 to replace. And none of the reviewers look at it from the point of view of someone who already has an Apple Pencil 1. Why complain about backwards compatibility with accessories for the high end iPads when none of the buyers of this product have any of those? The best way to compare this iPad is with a previous model base iPad such as the 7’th gen iPad. With a base iPad, nobody’s upgrading annually. People upgrade every 3-5 years. How does this iPad compare to a 6’th or 7’th gen? It looks pretty good by comparison, better in every way. I find it odd all the reviewers are complaining it’s worse than an iPad Air. Umm, it’s supposed to be. Otherwise, Apple should just label this the iPad Air 6 and sell it for $599. I’m extremely disappointed at every RUclips reviewer since none of them have taken a practical point of view of a poor user upgrading from a prior base iPad or an education user.
Good point, thanks for the perspective. It’s important to remember that Apple is a BUSINESS and to look at their decisions in the context of real-world consumers & consequences. At the end of the day, I guarantee that Apple makes a much larger share of their revenue from the general public/average consumer than from online tech reviewers & viewers.
@@lachlanbrown8110 You are correct , however they aren't paying list price. Schools expect, and indeed do receive huge education and volume discounts. Because of this , products intended for this market usually appear to be a bad value when judged by the list price. This is definitely one of those products..
The keyboard is $250 and it isn’t compatible with the old Smart Keyboard schools have tons of. They better give schools a 75% discount on that new keyboard or I question whether a device that has a keyboard with a list price comparable to a chrome book can compete with a chrome book. And given the $250 price, the school discount would have to be out of this world. Plus, the keyboard footprint is too long for some school desks.
Seems to be a common reoccurring theme right now - buying last year's products at a discount (which usually roughly equals the price of current year base model). They are very slyly shrinkflating their offerings, just like everyone else. And never in living memory have I seen so many cases of looking back and thinking "ya know, last years stuff really was a better deal" than I have this year with nearly everything Apple has released.
I think these are more for schools and businesses that need a lot of them for education purposes. The non laminated display makes it easier and less costly to repair if any necessary.
You might have a point, if Apple still weren't selling new Ipad 9 with non-laminated screens, perfectly good for education purposes that are over $100 cheaper!
Isn’t there a Lightning dongle shipped with the 1st gen pencil, so you can charge it with a Lightning cable? I got one that was with the pencil and still use the pencil with a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5
I really wish they would have done a better job of making the charging easier for the gen 1 pencil with this iPad but I still have my gen 1 and I refuse to upgrade because gen 2 hurts my drawing hand! I want a more comfortable pencil like gen 1 and until they make one I’m sticking with the very comfortable and smooth gen 1. That flat side is so painful on my fingers. Yes the charging is a pain in the butt but I find it so much more comfortable that it’s still worth not getting gen 2. Apple need to think about the design of the pencil maybe make a third GEN that’s compatible with all of their iPads?? I don’t know, all I know is I prefer GEN 1 and I’m probably gonna end up getting this iPad because it’s bigger than my old one and it’s the cheapest. Someone needs to appeal to the budget artists please.
Wow, I didn’t noticed the downgraded Wifi. Thanks for pointing it out. As much as this Ipad interest me, it’s pricing made me reconsider and look at the other Ipads in their line up.
Am I missing something because according to the specs I see WiFi 6 with simultaneous dual band so I am wondering what am I seeing incorrect ( I am not a tech guru but like to think of my self as one who appreciates tech.)
If you don’t need to use a pencil, it’s a “fine” iPad. About $50 too expensive, but it would be a good iPad for kids, seniors, and anyone that doesn’t want a laminated display. Though I could say the same thing about the 9th gen iPad, but that home button is just so dated.
I just got convinced to get a IPad Air 5 64gb on sale at Amazon.. Great product an will last for sometime. Don’t need the Pro but a step up from the basic.
The kickstand keyboard is too expensive, but it does have pluses and minuses. Yes, it's less lapable, but you can detach the keyboard and use it in kickstand only mode, which is very nice, and compact.
This iPad is a complete letdown. I’ve been waiting for release day thinking we would get something great, but alas it is not to be. If they had used the Apple Pencil 2 and mounted the charging on the side, maybe id think about it. But in this configuration, forget it. Thanks for the tip on the Refurb Air 4 Luke, that’s what will be coming to my home next. Oh, and I agree with you, that yellow color DOES look like piss. 😂
I’d also suggest the 2018 iPad Pro, which is the same price as the Air 4 on Apple’s refurbished site. For $20 more than the 10th gen, you can buy 2 better iPads directly from Apple lol. They do it to themselves.
Heres the problem first, 1st gen apple pen but the ipad is usb c. Second, Bigger bezels?????. Third, Why the fuck is it not laminated likes its not expensive to add. And the last thing its 449 dollars like why theres barely any upgrade.
Now its gonna be interesting what the next base iPad will look like, I'm hoping the gen 9 iPad will be gone but that may not mean the 329 dollars will move to this 10th or 11th gen iPad. worst comes to worst the 329 dollars may disappear and the starting price for an iPad could be 450 dollars lets hope this doesn't happen but its a possibility, after all we're talking about a capitalist American company where profits comes first, not much competition (competing themselves) so they don't have much to lose as result us consumers suffers most by getting great but a bad value products and what's worst we will buy it anyway.
Excellent video: really like the tone and humor. On major negatives, we could add the transfer speed of the port: USB 2 only! And this, after switching to a USB-C port... Another perfect exemple of giving high hope to people to better trash them out.
Thanks for your helpful comments. I was going to buy a new base iPad for my 92 year old dad, a more sensible size than his 12 inch 2016 iPad Pro; but seeing your review and others has convinced me that Apple is following the same path as many other modern manufacturers; make products that are purposely hobbled with a planned obsolescence in mind. I guess they can get away with abusing their customers as they are the only game in town when it comes to touch tablets. I think the Sherman Antitrust Act needs to be enforced and give Apple the spanking it deserves and break up this monopoly of arrogance they have.
@@jackdominiak445 i apologize. The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was a product of a previous Republican administration 110 years ago, under President Theodore Roosevelt (a Republican highly valued by Trump).
Can’t help but wonder what Steve Jobs would’ve made of this… I can’t imagine he’d look favourably on what current Apple has managed to do with the iPad line up or the whole Apple product portfolio for that matter.
It has a non laminated display because thats much much cheaper to fix when it breaks for this products intended target audience - schools, kids, etc. That's why there was effort put into it.
The worst feature though is the price. People aren't noticing that Apple is establishing new higher entry points for all of their products, just like the M2 Macbook Air going up $200. The trend is going to continue. Thanks for the honest review. Definitely looking at used this year but that's sad for an xmas gift for a teen.
i agree with you to a point i feel like inflation also has a lot to do with this. A lot of other companies are sky rocketing pricing beyond belief. Heck look at logitech and their newer gaming mice (G502X plus) they want $159 for a damn mouse. Insanity
That’s pretty much any Apple product in a nutshell: the worst thing about this Apple product is the price. You’re paying more for less features, and they’ll continue doing it as long as we the consumers keep buying their crap
The problem was what Apple learned about graphics at Blender. This threw a monkey wrench into the 3nm processor, so Apple stepped back and came up with the M2 half-step. Sure, it's not all that bad, but this year will be a bit, well, anemic. Here's hoping they can get their graphics squared away in the next year before the M3 faces the same disorder.
@@SiddarthMalik If you like to upgrade every year for whatever reason, I'd say get the M2. If you're an average consumer that doesn't care about small spec bumps, I'd say wait and see what the future brings.
I still have my iPad pro 2017 which is showing signs of aging, the original keyboard has now stopped working so is now just a heavy front cover, the pencil is still hanging in there and the iPad charging port is sometimes a bit iffy, I had thought of getting the new iPad and keeping with the pencil but now, no thanks I'll keep with this one until it gives up the ghost.
The non-laminated is a necessity for the base model iPad, targeted towards education and enterprise where repairability matters more, repairing a non laminated display is much easier and cheaper. The Apple Pencil 1 is a stop gap measure for them to sell as many of them as they can before the end.
A lot of people are misunderstanding this. Apple doesn't replace just the display during repair even for unlaminated iPads, they replace the whole device just like the laminated ones and charges you with the same absurd repair fee. For example, the screen repair fee for the iPad 9th gen, which is also unlaminated, costs over $200, over 60% the MSRP. Also, if Apple is targeting this towards education, *why are they removing the headphone jack??*
The reasoning behind the non-laminated display is because it’s way easier (and therefore cheaper) to replace the front when the glass and screen are separate, but other than that this tablet is a mess.
You call it as you see it and that is what I appreciate about your channel. Between my Mac mini and my older MacBook pro I have no interest in an iPad but I still watched the video (not because of the somewhat click baity title 😉) but because I try to stay current on what's out there and because I know I can trust your judgment. Keep up your great work 🙂
Hi,Luke.Always an informative and honest video! Here in Greece, the price for it is 630€!I was thinking about upgrading our 9th gen ipad with this one. What do you think, keep using the 9th,instead?Keep up the Great videos!
If you think about it, this ipad is great for people who don’t use Apple Pencil or keyboard. It’s athletically more pleasing than the old base model, and cheaper than iPad Air.
i like the non laminated just for repair, this is meant for schools where repairs happen every day. but that lack of headphone jack is the kiss of death for schools.
I bought the iPad 10 and honestly, I find it useful for my needs. I take a lot of notes. Yes, the iPad air 4 is a better product but because I already owned the Apple pencil 1st gen, I saved a good amount of money. I don’t need more, I have a MBA M2 and un PC, so it fits perfectly in my setup.Yes it is a stupid choice from Apple about how to charge the pen, but at the end of the day, this iPad is still a good device for many users who don’t need a pencil or a keyboard.
I think there's a problem with your WiFi router/connection - I get around 450mbps download on my iPad 8 (with a concrete wall between the router and the iPad) which has worse WiFi than even the iPad 10.
I think the new changes are nice to have (the new folio & the landscape camera), but they feel quite poorly implemented. It feels like apple know that these are features that people actually want, but they have to implement some hardware limitations (1st gen pencil support, the exclusive keyboard folio that doesn’t work with any other ipads) so that this “base” ipad doesn’t get too good to prevent people from getting the higher end ipads. It is just a very weird mix of good and bad things combining into a weird products that doesn’t really have a clear target demographic. It feels like a transitional phase product that has new features that will eventually be in the higher end models, and now they are just trying to squeeze more profits out of the (now 4 yo) ipad design which was first introduced in 2018. Unless you are someone that doesn’t want a laptop, doesn’t take digital notes or do any digital illustration, specially want an IPAD for doing basic internet work and media consumption. But in that case, older ipads (e.g. the 2018 ipad pro, ipad air 4) will be more value for money. They are still fully capable and fast, with full support of the latest ipad accessories ecosystem. This is a real one to skip. No one should really get one. Your conclusion is on point! Just a stepping stone for apple to upsale you to more expensive models!
I don't mind the price hike, I don't mind the dumb pencil support. I was waiting for the iPad 10 so that I could decide on getting the 9 or iPad air. But with the 10 here in Australia, the entire line up got a price hike including the old 9 and iPad air. That is what drove me away from the iPad
95% of people will never use an Apple Pencil or a keyboard with to their iPad. For those people this will be a great iPad. As for the stand, does anyone really complain about the Microsoft Surface design?
I have the Apple Pencil 1 and I will never use the keyboard, I have a laptop lol. I have a 6th generation iPad and I want to get this one. I plan on having it for a minimum of 3-4 years. I don’t upgrade iPads frequently.
I bet their plan is to let it trickle down to $350-400 over time and eventually support the Apple Pencil 2 once they figure out how to work it in with the new landscape FaceID system. They released it now, but it’ll probably be the product it’s suppose to be in a few years.
This is not a product for us tech-nerds so it shouldn’t be reviewed in this way. This is for folks who just need an internet browsing device, kids, and schools and is easy and cheap to fix when it gets dropped.
It's still not a good product Would you buy a shitty car from the 80s with a 2020 design with 50hp at 50k$ because "well im not a car guy i just need something to go from point a to point b ? yeah, didn't think so
They should just cut down on the models that they have and make it easier. I don't know why they keep on pushing the gen 1 pencil it feels like gen 2 has been out for a while.
I could forgive the pencil dumbness and other shortcomings if the new ipad was priced the same as the old one, but not at it's current price. The complete solution would be more palatable if the core piece (the ipad) was priced closer to the old one.
I’m sure they can make the first gen and second gen 🖊 work, I don’t use keyboards or pencils and I use otter box heavy duty drop cases for mine. It’s a fine iPad to me.
What makes me understand why this product exists: the education sector. This is a market that needs cheap, easily replaceable ipads in mass quantities. When you are ordering 10,000 units the $100 price difference suddenly becomes material. The use case is basic, so Apple can avoid parts in this constrained supply chain environment. This also makes Apple major gross margins too - so its win-win. Not a product for a tech enthusiast like you and me.
Luke, my 9yr old son is on a 7th gen. He’s ready for upgrade due to broken glass. All he does is watch RUclips and play games. Do I go with 10th gen or 9th gen?

FYI - The previous 9th gen (entry-level) A13 iPad is still in the current iPad lineup as a new product. From $329. I’d rather have that one, and it’s Home Button with Touch ID makes it easier to use and grip securely (without accidentally touching screen) for kids with small hands. This new one is basically the old A14 (before M1) 10.9-inch iPad Air, with FaceTime camera moved and cheaper parts (like the screen), for $150 less at $449. I think that’s why it has an A14 instead of A15 (which iPhone SE and even the new $129 Apple TV has now).
@@adammachin Yes, iPad Air (current or previous) and new entry-level iPad both have Touch ID on the top power button. Only iPad Pro models use Face ID (for iPads).
😵 That color! You said it Luke. Yeah, ipads are generally a weird product to begin with. I have a stupid expensive Pro M1 and it's incredibly capable for I still don't know what. I read the news on it. The second you try to move some files around or do any work, you better have a few four-letter words handy. So an ipad like this which just kinda sucks but also costs A LOT of money is a head scratcher for sure. Apple does most things right, but MacOS on Ipad (ala MS Surface) so we can actually use them for something is looooooong overdue.
I feel like the Pro models would've been set as the default iPad at this point and you'd like to get the Air version if you need an affordable options. They somewhat lose their "Luxury" identity. But well, apple.
Apple is its own problem. They have created and ecosystem where if you don’t go for the expensive ones, you won’t get anything good. They willingly design their base models to be very uncomfortable, having stupid errors that can be simply corrected. They even went far to an extent of producing two different versions of chipset (like androids especially Samsung) for their base model entry iPhones ( like the iPhone 13 models) where the pro models chipsets are far superior than the base model where as before, they were basically the same. Now this year’s iPhone line up was so much worse as to giving the base model iphone 15 the same A15 chips as last year’s 13. Plus even if you now go for the expensive iPad ( M2/1) you’ll still be limited by the software ( not allowing you to take full advantage of the M chips making it very annoying). Tim is truly gonna ruin everything.I don’t expect anything from Apple again because at the end of the day, they are still gonna mess up again😏
They gotta wait to give you the laminated screen next year, this year new design/colors and next year with little updates like the laminated screen and second gen Apple Pencil support.
It's made even worse in my country where they've made everything else more expensive including the 9th gen ipad. They seriously made a year old iPad more expensive than when it was new. I was planning to upgrade from my 7th gen ipad to a 128gb 10th gen in midnight and get a 2nd gen apple pencil and then when I saw this I realised I was going to have to deal with 32gb for another year at least.
I still use a basic iPad with gen 1 pencil that is knocking on 4 yrs old. I use it professionally without trouble for storyboard work and print on demand designs. With astropad and my Mac air it is a powerhouse.
My 10 year old grandson got the blue one today for his birthday. He has been using a very old iPad Mini and his parents decided this one would last him for quite a while. They have a pencil and he will eventually get a keyboard that does not cost a fortune. Small market place no doubt. But he will be happy and so am I.
Hello, first time watching one of your videos and good job. You had me entertained every second of your video. also I ask have you reviewed a Lenovo 2 in 1 tablet? Is a better choice for your buck and does not envy anything about the iPad. I bought mine 3 yrs ago and I love it.
I bought an ipad pro 2017 12.9" and it is so cheap even with keyboard and 1st gen pencil. It has Pro Motion, True Tone, Surround Speaker and a fully laminated display as well as a coated display. With 256 GB I payed 500 EUR in total on ebay. It has everything I need and it still gets updates. I wish apple had made an approach like they did with the iphone 14+. An iPad + with 12.9" screen and some value. Because I think many people are interested in a 12.9" iPad but 1500 EUR is just out of every normal persons reach. Good video!
I tried out the 10th gen iPad for about a week and was really disappointed in the display. Felt cheap on top of the other compromises they made. It would be an amazing tablet if they kept it to a modest price increase, say around $349-$379, but not $449. The Air 5th gen then went on sale for $499 so I returned my 10th gen after a week. The Air has worse battery life but it’s a completely better experience, and having the M1 chip will make it powerful for years to come.
The huge price increase and lack of laminated display doomed it for me. Was planning on updating my wife's 9th Gen iPad until I saw the specs/price and disappointment set in.
Waiting to see what the new iPad 11”pro is going to be like and might even purchased the m1 11” iPad Pro 256 go instead currently have iPad Air 3 gen 128gb what do you think my best option is ?
I really wish the Air came in the same yellow as the 10th gen ipad… But much like opting for an XR over a XS because of the yellow, I’m probably opting for an iPad 10th gen over an air 5th gen because of the yellow. (And I don’t have to buy another Apple Pencil because I already have a 1st gen) It also helps the 10th gen’s case that I’m coming from a 6th gen and not an air/pro or newer base iPad. When ppl were hating the XR on release, I was going to the XR from an SE1, which is a night&day transition in terms of screen size, bezel reduction, stereo sound and more bass.
@@jm31828 the FaceID iPad Airs are only compatible with the Apple Pencil 2. No idea why an Apple Pencil 1 refuses to pair to them even with a USBC to Lightning adapter though.
If I had to guess, this iPad may just be using Apple Pencil 1 because Apple are trying to get rid of all their Apple Pencil 1s so they can shift focus completely to Apple Pencil 2 (maybe also Apple Pencil 3 if they have that in the pipeline) for next year's main model iPad.
very true.Hence I will replace my 6th gen iPad for 2022 iPad Air.I would rather pay 70 pounds more (yes you can still buy it 569 pounds in UK when 10th gen is 499)
When picking the ipad 10 and ipad air 5th gen the only reason why i went with the air was because of the apple pencil i could live with all of the ipad 10s shortcomings but the apple pencil situation with this device is downright stupid
For the price of the iPad 10, you can get a 9th gen (299 usd) + a Logitech folio keyboard (99 usd) + a Logitech crayon/ Apple Pencil (49/99 usd). A whole laptop package essentially under 500 usd

Android tablets suck though, far more than their phones.
Would you believe if I told it was even more of a mess a few years ago ?
It's fricking ridiculous.
It feels to me like Apple is trying really hard to justify having 3 levels of iPad when they really only need 2: Pro and Non-Pro. Just combine the base and the Air and you’d have one product that would make more sense for the non-pro users and would probably make more sense for apple’s supply chain as well 🤷♂️
And keep the price at $329
well, they really need a low cost iPad
My parents wouldn’t listen to me to not buy the iPad 10th gen and they are returning it today lol
I’m happy with my 9th gen
the atrocity is they put a USB 2.0 in with a USB-C interface.. e.g. its slow
They gonna make it a pro feature
My man. My ten year old, who this model is for, doesnt care about usb 2.0. Buy the pro if u want those features. I think its perfect for the average person to watch youtube and surf the web. U dont need laminated screens and an apple pencil 2 to order stuff on amazon
is this a foreshadowing of the iphone 15? 🤭
@@seanwhitman4365 my 2015 iPad Air 2 has a laminated display and it's still great
@@seanwhitman4365 misleading consumers is a serious legal problem Apple has created
Ultimately it can benefit the regular user as bulk merchandise is often sold cheaper used
@@vtvincent4893 the $120 price increase is offset by being able to re-use apple pencil 1's that schools and corporations bought in bulk years ago. the apple pencil 2 which is $129... the $9 adapter suddenly makes sense and is priced accordingly as well, and ends up being incredibly useful for those bulk buyers that can have the full new iPad experience with the pencil as part of their usual annual cycle of purchases with virtually no change in price, and no real need to fork over more cash for accessories (schools and corporations were never gonna go with the apple folio keyboard case, they would have sourced other cheaper keyboard cases, or skipped the keyboard all together and just gotten a protective case instead).
The price point hike alone is a bummer, but this update also does nothing to justify it beyond the nicer aesthetic.

iPad 9 is a great iPad
I ended up getting the Mini with 256 GB and the Pencil after this got announced, and I've been loving it so far. Love how compact and portable it is, and I feel like it's a much better value compared to the new base iPad.
Sideways camera is a neat idea, but no Pencil 2 support and the $120 price increase killed getting it for me.
Good choice
Love my mini 6 as well
With the non-laminated display I completely understand why most of the time this iPad is probably going to be for kids or for company’s at my work we use the iPad 9th gen and the screens get broken all the time and it’s a lot more affordable to just replace the glass and I also got an iPad 9th gen for my kid for that reason that’s a lot more affordable to replace the glass the a $400 or $500 screen.
The price is nowhere near competitive enough for the education market though.
And never in living memory have I seen so many cases of looking back and thinking "ya know, last years stuff really was a better deal" than I have this year with nearly everything Apple has released.
the lamination sucks, but it makes it more repairable which is good for situations like education or kids that will break the screen often/easily
I never laughed so hard! Tell us how you really feel. Thanks. I do like your honest assessments. I'll just keep my iPad Air 4 for now.
People who want to buy an iPad should STILL go for the Air 4
It wouldn't make sense to "upgrade" your Air 4 to this in the first place anyway when this new iPad is basically a half-assed Air 4.
I think these are more for schools and businesses that need a lot of them for education purposes. The non laminated display makes it easier and less costly to repair if any necessary.
Apple repairs the whole screen (laminated or not) so it’s not really for that, just been cheap
You might have a point, if Apple still weren't selling new Ipad 9 with non-laminated screens, perfectly good for education purposes that are over $100 cheaper!
@@arturoehr the schools repair the iPads themselves to save money.
Isn’t there a Lightning dongle shipped with the 1st gen pencil, so you can charge it with a Lightning cable? I got one that was with the pencil and still use the pencil with a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5
It does, it’s just in the sleeve with all the manuals and whatever
Can you use the iPhone Lightning to usb c charger to charge the Apple Pencil??

Just bought this for $299 at Amazon. Wonder what his thoughts are at that price point 🤔
@@soumenchakraborty2450 its not the reason why these devices are getting expensive. You have to take inflation into account.
It’d be easier for Apple to just redesign the Apple Pencil 1 with USB-C.

You forgot about the Anker 563's ability to use 3 displays on Base Model M1/M2 Macs

Can’t help but wonder what Steve Jobs would’ve made of this… I can’t imagine he’d look favourably on what current Apple has managed to do with the iPad line up or the whole Apple product portfolio for that matter.
Agreed! Steve Jobs would be pissed. When he was alive Apple had one iPhone, one iPad. That was it.
I enjoy using the ipad 10th gen. Great for web browsing and media content. Love it.
A total disaster.
pls explain this more... should I wait for m3???
The whole repairability argument is not valid if the battery is still glued in the chasis
The reasoning behind the non-laminated display is because it’s way easier (and therefore cheaper) to replace the front when the glass and screen are separate, but other than that this tablet is a mess.
You call it as you see it and that is what I appreciate about your channel.

Got my wife a 2018 ipad pro for less than 500 with 256GB.... never regret buying it second hand. The ipad is in daily use for almost a year now.
That’s how much your currency is devaluing nothing to do with Apple

LUKE that motorized slider you’ve got is slick! Always loved your videos and your appearance in Genius Bar. Keep it up man!
2:52 “that looks like piss” I lost it 🤣
Thanks you confirmed my decision to buy the 9th Gen iPad on sale over this past summer :)
Apple really thought "since we changed the design, people will obviously buy tons of it!"
Is the non laminated display, for cheap repairs at schools?
Your sighs of disappointment were so relatable. Great content 🫶
What is the M2 for?
Nobody needs faster processes but Apple keeps installing them
WHY?
My guess is to accommodate Artificial Intelligence....
“That looks like piss!” - Luke Miani LOL 😂
The huge price increase and lack of laminated display doomed it for me. Was planning on updating my wife's 9th Gen iPad until I saw the specs/price and disappointment set in.
I love the fact Luke didn't care about the iPad falling on the floor when demonstrating the reclining problem on an airplane. 😂
Waiting to see what the new iPad 11”pro is going to be like and might even purchased the m1 11” iPad Pro 256 go instead currently have iPad Air 3 gen 128gb what do you think my best option is ?
I really wish the Air came in the same yellow as the 10th gen ipad…
But much like opting for an XR over a XS because of the yellow, I’m probably opting for an iPad 10th gen over an air 5th gen because of the yellow. (And I don’t have to buy another Apple Pencil because I already have a 1st gen)
It also helps the 10th gen’s case that I’m coming from a 6th gen and not an air/pro or newer base iPad. When ppl were hating the XR on release, I was going to the XR from an SE1, which is a night&day transition in terms of screen size, bezel reduction, stereo sound and more bass.
Even if you bought the air, you wouldn't need to buy a new pencil, would you? I thought the 1st and 2nd gen pencils work with the Air?
@@jm31828 the FaceID iPad Airs are only compatible with the Apple Pencil 2. No idea why an Apple Pencil 1 refuses to pair to them even with a USBC to Lightning adapter though.
If I had to guess, this iPad may just be using Apple Pencil 1 because Apple are trying to get rid of all their Apple Pencil 1s so they can shift focus completely to Apple Pencil 2 (maybe also Apple Pencil 3 if they have that in the pipeline) for next year's main model iPad.
"Sad pit of despair." LOL!! 😆
what team is the iMac 27" that you're using in the advertising?
very true.Hence I will replace my 6th gen iPad for 2022 iPad Air.I would rather pay 70 pounds more (yes you can still buy it 569 pounds in UK when 10th gen is 499)
When picking the ipad 10 and ipad air 5th gen the only reason why i went with the air was because of the apple pencil i could live with all of the ipad 10s shortcomings but the apple pencil situation with this device is downright stupid
Thanks for reinforcing my decision to buy the 9th gen. Very happy with it.
Is it just the Air 4 without the laminated screen pencil 2 support and front camera placement moved?
For the price of the iPad 10, you can get a 9th gen (299 usd) + a Logitech folio keyboard (99 usd) + a Logitech crayon/ Apple Pencil (49/99 usd). A whole laptop package essentially under 500 usd
Can you check if usb c to lightning works with Apple Pencil 1? Cuz in my Apple pencil 1 box there is lightning adapter in there
Now I am having second thoughts about getting this one for my mom. My only question is if she would be able to stream video comfortably with out the dual band WiFi?
It's a good product that is terribly priced. I bought a gen 9 ipad at 250 at the Exchange. It's more than I need. Sure, the case is old design but I don't mind. I don't have a need for a pro. Base model is all I need for consumption...
