    Awesome build, and great elevated bed. One thing I did in my deer-camper was put the hinge out from the wall the same distance as the thickness of the mattress. That way I could lock up the mattress along with the bed and have it totally out of the way.

    One of the improvements I made to my cheap awning (a lot of these are sold in Australia by Kings 4WD Supacentre) was to drill a hole through the bottom of the poles and thread a loop of rope or wire through. You can then hook a tent peg through the loop which will hold the awning down in windy conditions.
    Great build by the way!😀

    My door and fender's much like yours. I added a front deck same width as my fenders that goes down both sides and bolts to them. This provides a step for going in and out of the door... My Amazon fold down jacks are ok but don't lift as well as I'd like. I use the flashing-multi-colored rope lights around the awning. They're great.

    Love your video. I will share one pretty soon. An idea for an extension of the galley would be to consider bolting on half a hurricane hinge to the side of your camper. Make sure the through bolts are located in the galley area to minimize possible water intrusion into your living quarters. Also, I used butyl tape between the hinge flange and the camper body to create a water tight seal. Used bolts instead of wood screws from my years of living on a sailboat. Your idea of unistrut is spot on and love it. For a power bank, have you considered the power banks from Goal Zero and likes? Great option if you are not needing a lot of power for typical land lubber amenities such as air conditioning, heaters and other typical home items. After living on a sailboat for many years, I have often found that many people try to recreate a house on a sailboat or in this case in a camper and end up never fully escaping.

    Something that might help with the height of the door and also the table situation is building the floor up a few more inches and have table that can slide out of the back of the galley under the floor that you just raised might help you out a little

    Much better audio this time around! I love the bunk bed you added. I think a lot of "overland" trailer manufactures dont understand that many people travel with their kids and pets. Seems like most manufactures build their trailers for a couple and not families.

      Thanks for watching Jake. I completely agree with you. If our family gets any bigger we will have to get a rooftop tent too. Without the bunk we would be even more cramped in the camper.

    Thanks for the update! Top hinge galley door is the craze but I like the side hinge doors with drop down counters that add work area! My side door is high like yours on purpose! Side frame extension the width of the fender serves as a step for climbing in and works well. Cargo rack is mount for the same awning you have.

    Great Share - I first looked at pop up campers but they don't seem to give me the weather protection I was looking for, even though they get you up off the ground. Then looked at hard-side campers and I kept thinking they were more than I wanted/needed to tow around. Then I started catching onto the squaredrop/square top campers like yours and I have an almost brand new Tractor Supply 5.5 x 10 ft trailer I was done with - job was over, thinking about selling it. So, Shazam, now I see it's future - I have to learn how to weld well, though. I do see an advantage of having the camper removable from the trailer, on a demand basis - when needed. Just missing the welding skills and time - ha.

    • @FunkeAdventures
      @FunkeAdventures  2 года назад

      I totally understand that. I got someone to do the welding for me, but you’d be surprised how much you can do without welding. 5.5x10 could be a great size for the camper. Sounds like you are just about ready to dive in and start your build. Good luck!

    • @FunkeAdventures

      Good point Matt. The jacks would definitely help stabilize the camper when it is unhooked from the truck. I've noticed that when I'm unhooked, the trailer shakes a lot more with minor movement in the middle of the night.

    I have a utility trailer that I use almost weekly but want to build a "slide in" camper for it. Now knowing that you had to use the aluminum skin would you have gone with the 3/4 plywood or would you change it to 5/8? Also do you have any idea how much it weighs? My daily is a JKU Wrangler and is only rated to pull 3500 pounds so I’m trying to come up with ideas to save on weight and also make it able to be loaded/unloaded within 30-45 minutes. Thanks for your videos. They are inspiring!

    • @FunkeAdventures
      @FunkeAdventures  2 года назад +1

      These are all super great questions. I'm sorry it took me a little while to respond. We have been on family vacation and I just barely have had time to sit down and reply to comments.
      First off, just as an FYI. The slide in isn't always the easiest. Having a winch would definitely help. I've done it with a hand winch and also with a forklift. Forklift was definitely easier, but I made due with the hand winch. An electric winch would make it easier though. Most likely, any aluminum skin will get scratched up in the process. If you are ok with that, then no big deal. Otherwise, I would try to make the camper a little narrower to give yourself some "wiggle" room when sliding the camper on and off. Honestly, 5/8 plywood would work just fine, especially with the "framing" that I use (see my most recent build videos). If you take it slow, it shouldn't be too hard.
      This camper and trailer combined weighed 1300 lbs dry. With mattress, battery and other junk, I'd say it is just under 1500 lbs. Pretty light and totally pullable with a Wrangler. Let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks for being here and watching the videos!

      Hi Nora, thanks for watching our video.
      This is the mattress I use. It is a memory foam mattress which makes it easy to cut (no metal wires. It’s also very comfortable.
      It has a cloth mattress protector on it the you can unzip to remove and wash. Then from there you can just cut the mattress to size. I really sharp razor blade or even kitchen knife would work well. When you’re done, just zip the mattress protector back on and squeeze it into your camper.
      Hope that helps!

    I'm rebuilding a 1979 coachman from the ground up. It's a 20' tandem axle. I was considering a 1/2 treated plywood coated in flex seal. A previous utility trailer I built (4x6) that is how I built it and have had no problems. My question is if I put an exterior of plywood and then added an exterior of aluminum would it be to heavy? For a midsized suv to pull?

    • @FunkeAdventures
      @FunkeAdventures  10 месяцев назад

      That is awesome. Sounds similar to what Joe and Emma Lee are doing with their Toyota RV. I love their channel BTW, you should check it out. www.youtube.com/@JoeandEmmaLee
      A 20' trailer is big for a midsized SUV no matter what, in my opinion. What was on the wall before? The added plywood and aluminum is going to be heavy so I would be cautious. But if you had a big enough vehicle hauling it (especially as a tandem axle) I thnk you'd be ok.
      Thank you so much for watching the video. I am interested to see how your coachman turns out!

    Looks like you didn't glue your metal wrap on the outside. That would have been a very good thing to do.

    • @FunkeAdventures
      @FunkeAdventures  10 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the suggestion Dean. I actually did that in a previous build and it was not great. Aluminum expands and contracts quite a bit with the changing temperature from the sun and weather. So when it is glued, you get some unsightly waves and ripples in the aluminum. To combat that, I learned that most manufacturers who use aluminum actually hold the aluminum on with the trim and allow it to "float". That way it can expand and contract without the waves.
      Thanks for watching!
