Listen to the Broadway soundtrack from 1993, and then after the show, get the original album. I heard the movie version first, and later when I heard the original album, it was interesting to note the differences.
@@Vinylspin1 I went in blind originally and was just blown away. The electricity in the building was palpable, truly. I think either way, just go if you can!
What hits me about this wonderful rock opera is just how great the music is. The songs are so wonderful that I would love to transport myself to see this show on Broadway.
There's almost too many musicals today but Tommy is one definitely worth seeing (hopefully tour regionally). I remember the 'from you I get opinions' section a very moving parent-child bonding moment. Pete turned a child sex abuse trauma into a very powerful work (and seeing the Who play Baba O Riley as the clouds parted in Nola, unforgettable). Go see the incredible Tommy!! 🎉🎉❤
I saw it in Previews last week, and it is as close to perfection as any show can be. Every aspect of the production is the height of it's art: the sound, the visuals, the dance, and That Voice!
Genius. Absolute musical genius... Not mentioned, the songwriter who impacted me more than anyone. Ive said it gazillion times, still understates my adoration for his mind and soul.
Pete never put WHO you are, a rock genius in every way, in the same sentence as Ababa. I had older sisters and a brother so we had a lot of good music in the house already, but as a child of the 70's "Won't Get Fooled Again" was the first cool album I bought on my own. When I got Tommy, my friends and I would act it out in my basement. Love you and the Who for at least 52 years or more....we had Woodstock in the house when I was 11 years old. Thank you for always being so great.
In 1976, I got to see the Who live, they were amazing, they played all their older hits, all of Tommy and all of Who’s Next, it was one of the best concerts of my life! Roger Daltry was a bronzed Greek God, I was standing right underneath him and my 21 year old brain was completely blown!! Pete Townsend, with his arms huge swings while playing guitar. Of course they switched guitars at the end, to smash up the stage, Kieth Moon was fantastic ❤
Man I wish I could go to this.. I grew up listening to Tommy.. It was one of my favorite albums from a young age.. And when it was on showtime when I was little I'd watch it every time it came on. It's still one of my all-time favorite movies.
Great that Tommy has achieved all these successes, however, to me, imho, the Tommy album by The Who, by itself, and any live concerts by The Who, themselves, was the apex of Tommy, it’s truest richest version.
Tommy is one of my favorite albums, I got the album at 14, the movie was ok, but in my mind, the Rock Opera looks a lot different than the movie. I would love to see Tommy as a Broadway musical, I created whole dance routines to Tommy at 14-15.
I saw Tommy the Movie with my best friend Ruthie when we were 12 years old in 1976. I’ve been a raving fan ever since. I LOVE Pete Townshend-you never know what he’s going to say or yell but you know it’s going to be memorable ❤️ PS Tommy the album performed by London Symphony Orchestra in the early 70s- Tommy will last forEVER
I remember seeing the original at the Macy's parade in 1993. I've been hoping for a revival for years. Just saw it on Saturday, what a welcome jolt this show is! Ali owns the stage, well done! I'll be going back in May. :D
Ali went to the same highschool I did, and he’s only a few years older than me. It gives me hope that someday I’ll be able to do something this amazing too! He’s amazing
The who greatest rock band ever. Pete Townshend is a musical genius. He was in his early 20s when he wrote and Composed. Tommy and he so many super great songs
My brother's band, Cannonball, was the pit band for the first ever staging, in 1971, by the Seattle Opera. He was lead guitar. I know the wiki mentions a different band, who were chosen when the performance moved from the Moore Theater (now the Moore Egyptian) to the Opera House. Not entirely sure about that but they followed Cannonball as the pit band. Better Midler played the Acid Queen and Tommy's mother (having to give birth onstage) and was much better in the role than Tina Turner, IMHO who only played the Acid Queen. I got to meet her backstage. What I remember is how short she is and that she recognized me as my brother's sister right away. Pete Townshend came over to Seattle and did put his stamp of approval on the production saying something like they were able to capture the music and his idea of the storyline better than anybody he had heard up til then. The music director stated that he was amazed that they didn't have to use sheet music, not understanding rock n roll musicians very well and apparently not knowing that 3 of them were classically trained (my bro' wrote a symphony at age 17). I'm very excited to see this new imagining if it's at all possible. I love how much Pete loves it.
Saw it here in Toronto in the 90's. I really hope it will return. I'll take my Niece. We've been to Phantom, Cats, Little Shop of Horrors and just last night Les Mis.
Got to go ,the last time I saw it was the opening at universal in 90s Pete was there a long with a lot celebrities at party following after the show was a great cast voices were great.
To me, in a way, this is more of a depiction of Autism than the musical of the HBO documentary movie How To Dance In Ohio ever will be. If I remember right, Townshend meant for Tommy to be a tribute to Autism, next to it being based on his personal child abuse experiences.
I think for those who were as of yet unfamiliar with Tommy, it will go over well with them. It's story has relevance to the younger generations. Maybe now more than ever.
Today show folks like Bryant really got on her for that. She seemed to have a demur towards 60’s rock performers and band. She resents that she has give them ode and honor to them because they are her generation. She likes broadway , musical stuff or lounge from the 30’s. More stage stuff. But she does like songwriters such as Lennon, James Taylor and John Denver types. She tries to be respectful to rock performers but like a child with first time guests, she is not good. Linda McCartney. Thats why Rona Barrett came in.
Worst performance I have seen in a long time, who ever was the coriografer should be fired, seen better at a grade school musical! This seemed to be a low budget musical, the talent was there but everything else was sub par, very disappointing, how on earth was this even nominated for anything??
I got to see the original Tommy on Broadway 30 years ago, and it remains one of the sublime moments of my life.
lovely. I'm going this Thursday - but I've never heard the album - what do you think, should I go in blind?
@@atuljoshi1990 don't go in blind you will be weirded out, listen to the soundtrack.

Awesome. I’m sure this new iteration is just as brilliant as the original.
Pete has spoken about the abuse he suffered as a child many times. Thank God he was able to work some of it out through his music.
Saw this production last week. Amazing. All of the cast were fabulous and this is definitely a Star is Born moment for Ali. He was captivating.
He seems like a real person ...😊.. No playing around ... just my opinion

Yep, i do remember everyword.....still getting chills with first notes.....1975.....what a cast.....♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️⭐⭐⭐⭐
Yep, me too! I could quote the whole album. There’s a verse in the song Sensation that is in the movie but not the album, so maybe not that one 😅
Great to hve it back...❤

Saw this production in Chicago. Absolutely stunning.
Genius. Absolute musical genius...

That album was one of the best!

Ababa?
I’m glad Townshend has mellowed out in his golden years.
I really like this musical if’s rock and roll opera
Yeah we were lucky to have the best teachers in the world, eternal gratitude gorgeous performers 🎉❤🎉

Very glad to see "Tommy" is back again. Totally awesome album.
Love him ❤❤❤
Cannot wait for this cast recording!
I listen to it every Christmas time
Did you ever see the faces of the children, they get so excited…!
I saw the 1993 revival and it was amazing! Looks like I need to book a trip to NYC immediately ❤😊

I saw this on stage 40+ years ago in Washington and Bette Middler was in the cast. A great show.
Also Ali needs to win the Tony. He is perfection.

I thought Patti LaBelle was the best. She could really drag that sound.
@@davanmani556 Did she play in one of the actual opera shows, or in the concert? I think I must have missed her performance.
Omg. Ali! First bdway show ??? A sensation indeed!
The Who!👍🙏❤️😊

It’s a chilling musical metaphor that’s describing the types of abuse is happening to us

This music means so much to me. I wanna go see it but I'll probably be a blubbering mess the whole time.
Nice gentleman.
I go back-and-forth on what’s better Tommy or Quadraphenia. Today I’m saying Tommy.
That’s tough…I gotta go with Quadrophenia…absolute MASTERPIECE
Great album(I’ve bought it more than once)but I’ve never seen the Broadway show. I’ve always wanted to.🎧
I need to set up a GoFundMe to travel to New York and see Tommy live on Broadway.
Love you Pete
He stopped the show twice in Philly to sign my album!
Saw the movie in the first week it was out.
Tina Turner will forever be the Acid Queen.
Hope Peter makes some money off of this stage show.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
And an extra ball
Who plays Acid Queen? 👑
Christina Sajous plays the Acid Queen (I have a playbill).

Beyonce needs to do TinaTurner's acid queen on broadway......
❤️
The funniest thing I thought was Elton John before learning about the original
❤❤❤❤❤❤
The hard question is if the new generstions will be atrracted to the play? Is "Tommy"; still known and relevant enough to atract Young people ?!
someone put the 1975 Tommy movie on youtube and it got 400K views in a few weeks...mostly older ppl watching it though.
I think for those who were as of yet unfamiliar with Tommy, it will go over well with them. It's story has relevance to the younger generations. Maybe now more than ever.
Less work has been done on staging Tommy than her face. This poor woman can't accept getting older. Watch the original. It is the best

Uh.....Jane Pauley, it's "Townshend."

Another retread? I really did grow up in the prime of everything. That was a long time ago.
It's called a revival.

"Is it important ... or is it just ABBA?". Not sure if it's important or not but it's nowhere near as good as ABBA lol.
