PEACE LILY - Air Purifier Plant Care Tips, Propagation Repot and Mistakes

- Today will look into the Peace Lily plant which is a NASA recommended Air Purifying plant. Will look into the care tips, the common mistakes we tend to do while caring peace lily and also how to propagate peace lily.
Spath or peace lily or closet plants with botanical name as Spathiphyllum is a beautiful indoor air purifying plant as recommended the NASA. They are evergreen perennials with large leaves and unique flowers which are produced in spadix. Spaedix means a spike having small flowers on a fleshy stem.This spadix is surrounded by a spathe which is a curved white bract or hood which covers the spadix.
When it comes to indoor plants, peace lily plants are some of the easiest to care for. But, while peace lily plant care is easy, proper growing conditions are still important. Let’s take a look at the care of peace lilies.
1. Sunlight: Peacelily prefers medium to low light - that’s indirect sunlight and can be kept in shady places. Again Peace lilies that are kept in more light tend to produce more and healthy flowers, and in low light will bloom less and will look more like a traditional foliage plant. SO keeping this mind, you can keep indoors at a spot which receives adequate indirect bright light.
2. Watering: This point is very important for peace lily care and the most common mistake gardeners tend to do is overwater the peace lily. Peace lilies are far more tolerant of under-watering than overwatering, which is one of the most common reasons for a peace lily plant to die. So what you can do is check once in three days and dip a finger into the soil to check for moisture and if the soil is till damp, never water it now, check again after 1 or 2 days and then water the container.
3. Also one more tip on Watering: Some people also wait until their peace lily is starting to droop down before watering their plant. As these plants are very drought tolerant, this method does not harm the plant and will prevent overwatering.
4. Soil: Soil at any cost has to be well draining soil. If you bring your plant from a nursery and you find its planted in clay rich soil, please remove the clay rich soil by soaking the root ball in a tub of water which dissolves the clay rich soil. Then repot the plant in a larger container in a well draining soil. 5. Well, Now the Fertilizer Requirement. You can use NPK 20 20 20 5 - 6 crystals once a month or decomposed cowdung or horse dung powder.
6. Propagation of Peace lily: It can be grow from seeds, and by dividing the root ball during repotting if its over grown its container.
7. One last bonus tip to keep it healthy with proper photosynthesis, keep its leaves clean of any dust by spraying water or mopping the leaves.

Hi thank you for the video. Wanted to check my peace lily is not budding any flowers from 5-6 months . Not sure what's wrong. It's kept in my balcony gets sufficient sunlight and i water it once in 2 days. In terms of giving proper fertilizer i missed that part but now i have given it decomposed one. Sir I am from Delhi, considering the toxic air , I have bought many anti pollution plants. I think I need to add this to my collection which seems to be a very low maintenance plant. You have given a passing reference of propagation of this plant through roots. Please make a detailed video on this technique. Plants which were inexpensive have become indispensable LSD for us! Please teach us how to propagate other ornamental plants also like croton, chinese evergreen etc..They cost around 450 each ! 😢 Thanks in anticipation! 🐛 Sonia.

I read on one of the most respected and thoroughly informative in almost every aspect, websites that you have to distinguish between tap root and thread root while pruning the roots as trimming the tap roots indiscriminately may harm the plant. But I saw uou cutting away all kinds of roots without a care. This is not criticism but raising a question that has bothered a home grown green thumb big time. Appreciate very much if you clarify. Jake Bates Hi, no it won’t. You need to do root pruning for root bound plants. But routinely doing root pruning not recommended unless you are cutting diseased or root burnt roots due to over fertilisation with chemicals and things like that.

Peace lilies also love coffee grounds depends on the size of the plant add twice a year no more. Mine seem to do better and grow bigger with a little coffee grounds.

Actually coffee grounds are too acidic and arabica coffee actually has a root inhibitor chemical that will kill the Peace Lily. I transplanted mine into a mix of pottong soil and coffee grounds about 4 months ago and it was not doing good, the leaves were droopy and turning yellow. After trying and trying to make it happy I researched and found that Peace Lily and coffee grounds are a no go. I pulled it out and repotted in just regular potting soil about a month and a half ago and it instantly perked up and has been doing so much better!

Also also I used a liquid fertilizer and the leaf at ends looks burnt now, I discovered from one of your videos that it is due to over fertilizing! so how to help them recover? Thanks!
Thanks. Initially they look greenish and then turn white on maturity. If you think you over dosed with chem fertilizer please flush it out with lots of water and water should come out of drainage holes. Do not water again for atleast 1 week. Do not use chemical fertilizers.

I have a question, my peace lily has small buds of flowers that grow, but they become brown and black wither and die after a week. Very small grown buds, The rest of the plant is very healthy.

My peace lily is not flowering for the last 5 years. I take care of my plant exactly according to your directions. Worried.
It will surely flower. Pl have patience. Also check early morning 2-3 hours sunlight. Repot if it’s not done in 1-2 years.
I usually will water mine every week to week and half I fill the pot till it leaks out the bottom then let it dry out again this method works the best for me
After removing the hard red soil ,please keep the plant in Epsom salt water(1tbsp in 1 late water) for 1 minute or 30 secs so that the plant does not go in repotting shock
Do you rinse it off after the soaking or just soak and repot it?
