Thanks for this! seeing the insides gave me the confidence to open my Warthog up when the POV HAT stopped working. All the other switches still worked correctly so I suspected a broken connection. Sure enough, once I got it open, I found a wire to the POV HAT had gotten entangled in the HAT centering spring and as the spring compressed during movement, it pulled the wire off its solder-point. (I agree it's a little odd to see them exposed in such an otherwise clean build) Quick dab of solder and a little work securing wires to prevent a re-occurrence and it's back at 100%
Theres not so many videos showing a teardown of the stick portion (rather then the gimbal) so thanks for making this a bit easier for me!

Besides the Cougar (also TM) The Warthog was effectively the first quality hotas that set the standard on the market. Brands like VKB and Virpil are taking things a tier higher, but you are also paying extra for it. You can get a Hotas set for like $430 or either the stick and throttle for about $200 on Amazon during a special. Not the best but a great start would be my vote. I've lost count how many years I've had mine and it still centers fine. I think people have a natural tenancy to twist the stick during use which can break it.

The Warthog is made of Zamak, a Zinc alloy. If it was made from diecast aluminum it would be much lighter. Also you can tell it's zamak because the exposed metal has a darker gray color to it. Aluminum would be shinier.

Man, I do love my Warthog. I really wish the manufacturer made a lefty! I do have some concerns about the synthetic guts in the base, and I find it curious they chose to use synthetic in the base given the grip is cast aluminum. You'd think they would use the metal on the parts that actually experience wear and tear. The grip itself really shouldn't degrade depending on the load you apply to control surfaces.

Thanks for this vid. Gives me the confidence to take my A-10 stick apart and repair the pinky switch which went inop after less than a year. I've seen several net references to this happening. That said, it is a quality piece of gear which I would recommend. I sprang for the F-18 add on handle and like it a lot, though the pinky button is very stiff. I tried a green spring to soften the axis stiffness, but found it too weak and it wouldn't center the stick. The shortest extension was the solution and I can highly recommend that. FWIW.

  • @jona5165
    @jona5165 3 года назад

The one thing that's wrong is that it's made of pot metal, not aluminum. If you drop it, pot metal could shatter like glass. It's also very hard to repair . On mine the hinge for the paddle broke twice. JBWeld works good because pot metal is so porous there's a lot of surface area to grab. The soldering on the switches was horrible.
I have move to a Virpil throttle and a CM2 base and will be getting a grip and selling off my Warthog.

Just to add, for anyone thinking of buying a second hand one, the push button switches are very cheap, and will start to stick to the on position after a few years, usually once your warranty runs out. I'm talking about the pickle, thumb, lever and pinkie button. There is no way to repair these buttons, as they seem to be sealed. Thrustmaster will charge you £30 per button, for replacement. But you can order OTTO buttons from mouser.co.uk. Which are the original military spec buttons P1's or preferably P8's, but the P8 buttons are hard to find, these have a shorter body, and make fitting them easier, without modification. Thrustmaster really should have gone that little bit extra on these buttons. The Throttle buttons will die first, so in total thats 7 buttons, at £15 each from mouser. But do your research on them make sure you get the correct size and type. The 3 throttle buttons are of different design to the ones on the stick, www.mouser.co.uk/datasheet/2/603/Otto_P1_Sealed_Military_Pushbuttons-1214958.pdf

Not sure how long I've had my grip. I got the very first one in Canada. I'd say 9 years. The grip's red trigger has paint worn off where the index finger sits. The bottom two hat switches (thumb) also have lost some paint due to wear. I've flown just about every week, maybe two or three times a week. The paint is partially worn off because I use those buttons so much. The only thing that come close to the quality of the grip sits inside a real A-10C. That's the grip.
The base (and specifically the gimbal) is not anywhere near that quality. I have a second NEW stick because the first one's gimbal got so much stiction that it could not be used anymore. (Yeah, I fly a lot.) The second gimbal is now showing stiction. That's after only a couple months of flying. The gimbal is made of PLASTIC and that's what takes the entire load of the stick. There are fixes to the gimbal but you have to be crazy to disassemble one and get it back in smooth motion again. I'm still working on my repair to the first stick.
    Hope this helps everyone.

  • @herrlogan17

The stick is great. Great ergonomy and great feel. Although I think the 4way hat located under the thumb should be a little bit harder/longer to push. I accidentaly push it either way while flying. Base is the problem here. Stiction and spring being to stiff problem out of the box, unless you mod it. But who would wait for 2 years for warranty. If you can afford it buy Virpil/Vkb base.

My DMS has stopped working unless a lot of pressure is done to it, this started to happen about 2 years in, and atm is just a PITA. The CMS sticks in place sometimes, specially sideways and into the grip, so, CMS RIGHT. The base of the grip failed within a few months, I had to replace some wires because they broke from moving. This also caused a short, which fried one of the "protections" on the base, which are some sort of in-board fuse, I soldered around the fuse, so, basically its not protected anymore but at least it works. Sticktion was a major problem too, I had to dissassemble it and completely sand it perfectly, and reassemble it with some proper aeronautical lube (Jabbers has made a video with what I did since then, he used the same exact method, same lube, etc). Mine is from 2016. Since yours is much older, I wonder if newer ones suck?

The build quality on Virpil has improved. The generations can be seen by the colour of the PCBs. Green was gen 1. They switched to red and now they use blue on their newest. No more hot glue needed as everything is made to fit. Wiring is simple now as well with fewer connectors. BTW.. I have not used any thrustmaster products since 2016. As soon as I saw the interior of the TMWH being all plastic, I was like.. no, never..

I agree with your assessment. I tested the HOTAS for the weekend. I loved the feel of the stick. The buttons were a bit stiff but I figure that's so you don't accidentally trigger them. Nyogel 767a will make your TM base last longer and feel better. Do a youtube search to get a feel for what I'm talking about. I got a tube on amazon for $30, and greased my TM 16k Hotas set. Both the stick and the throttle feel better, 16k throttles are fairly sticky when first purchased, the grease was a definite improvement.
I'm fairly happy with the end result, but I'd suggest spending a little time on youtube actually seeing people's results in videos before making a choice of grease. I think some people prefer the slightly less resistant 774 grease. Doing the work wasn't that bad, the stick and the throttle together took maybe 30 minutes of working carefully to do. I doubt your stick is built too differently than my own.
Oh, one other thing. Rather than going with VKB, you might consider Virpil. The Warthog grip works on a Virpil base, no extra work just screw it in. If you like the Warthog grip that is, perhaps you play other flight sims?

Noob covered the WH base in another video, but 99% of users would being getting the grip & plastic gimbal base as a unit. I agree with Noob that 1st impression is reinforced because of the grip weight, but I have found that weight has its drawbacks. After my WH gimbal broke, I put the WH grip on a VKB gladiator pro; which was MUCH better. If using with extension I would prefer a lighter grip; some of that comes from flying helo’s where I don’t want a heavily resistance to counteract the weight of grip.

I agree with your eval on the grip...but the giant plastic ball gimbal base. Is a completely different story and in my estimation and experience where the thrustmaster warthog fails. It's really heavy. When the gimbal failed and I used the grip on a vkb gunfighter base it felt very clunky and had to use dual springs on each cam. This review felt safe but inaccurate because you have to buy the base to get the grip. And the base is a toy no matter how solid the grip is.
